4-Week body re-comp check-in (as an untrained skinny-fat total noob)

2023.03.21 18:38 randomusername959126 4-Week body re-comp check-in (as an untrained skinny-fat total noob)

Hello there. I have made some progress and thought I'd share my journey so far.

Bio: 33m, 5'9''.

Starting weight: 146 lbs
Starting bf%: about 23 according to reference pictures on internet and waistline.
Muscle pretty much non-existent given no resistance training history whatsoever and sedentary lifestyle.
So, an extremely skinny and weak person with a belly.

Current weight: 140.8 lbs
Current bf%: somewhere around 20, maybe a bit lower.
Strength has definitely increased looking at my load/rep progression. Using bicep curls as an example, I started at 3 sets / 10 reps with a 10 lbs dumbbell. Now doing 4 sets / 15 reps with a 15 lbs which hits my reps limit, so next workout will be 20 lbs.
How much that translates to muscle gain and hypertrophy I don't know, and honestly don't care that much, yet. I definitely feel more muscle around my body, though.

Now the program.
Diet: 90% whole foods focused on high protein (>100g daily) and balanced carb / fat, carb for pre-workout fueling and fat for hunger control and general health needs. Fiber was also a consideration since high-protein foods tend to mess with my digestion and bowel movement if not enough fiber is consumed.
A typical day of eating might look like this -
Breakfast: oat meal with banana, berries, mixed nuts.
Lunch: chicken breast, rice / bread / wrap. Veggies.
Dinner: more or less like lunch, sometimes beef stew or other dishes for variety.
Snack: hard boiled eggs (yes), greek yogurt (similar toppings like I do with oat meals).
Breakfasts contained most of my carbs in a day because I worked out in the morning, so it helped with fueling the workout. Other meals could be shuffled around depending on what I felt like eating.

Calorie intake: averaged at 1750 calories per day over the 4 weeks. I weighed literally everything I put in my mouth, so while the number won't be 100% accurate, it's the best I could do.
TDEE: 2316. This is a calculated from above calorie intake number and my weight loss, assuming, for simplicity, that I lost only body fat. In reality I probably gained some muscle as well, so actual TDEE is higher. This will be useful for me as a reference point later on, when I need a ballpark maintenance calorie intake number.

Workout routine: Dumbbell-only exercises at home.
Day 1: squats and deadlifts.
Day 2: bench press, triceps extension, shoulder raise (lateral), bicep curl, glute bridge, abs crunch.
Day 3: back row, shoulder raise (vertical).
Day 4-6 is a repeat.
Day 7: rest day.
At first I tried combining leg and back exercises into day 1 so I could have day 3 off, but my body would give out mid-way, so before I can handle them in the same day I'm keeping day 3 as a back/soft rest day.
For volume, I usually spend around 2-3 hours each day lifting weights. I tend to give myself longer rests between sets, though. I push each set to 1-2 RIR. So for example, my last leg day was 8 sets of squat and deadlift each. Rep range depends on the exercise. Compound ones have lower reps.
I do moderate cardio exercises 3-5 times a week. 30 minutes on a stairmaster, a rowing machine, or a 60-minutes walk around home with decent inclination on the way back.

Sleep: Lucky for me, sleep has only become better, if anything. I'm having 8-9 hours of good night sleep. Some days I take a 10-min nap after lunch, more likely on leg days when I'd tire out in the morning and had to drag a few sets into the afternoon / evening. On rest day (day -7) I always do a light-moderate cardio session just to burn off any excess energy before it messes up with my sleep.

Results: really happy with how it all turned out. I feel better, stronger and more energetic everyday. It seems to come from both exercising and a healthier diet. Of course, by absolute standards, my numbers are nothing incredible or impressive, but I stuck to my plan and made progress which for me is more than enough.
Future plan & challenges: my legs are outgrowing my dumbbells (my heaviest dumbbell pair is of 30 lbs). For the compound exercises, my arms / grip / whatever start to give out before my legs, so either I look into alternative exercises that are able to tax my legs, or consider lifting barbells at a gym.
Once I hit 15% bf or lower (hopefully) I'm going to need to eat more and start lean bulking cycle. One might think I should've bulked to start with, given that my weight was already very low. Looking back, I really think that would have worked just as well, if not better. However I did carry big bf despite of low body weight, so I just personally preferred cleaning off that fat first before bulking up. In the long term either approach should be fine.

Thanks for reading and I hope you reach your goal while enjoying the journey. Please feel free to leave any comments, suggestions and / or questions.

2023.03.21 18:13 Jackviator The Spacer’s Guide to Caring For Your Pet Human (Part 1)

This is the beginning chapter of a long, space-opera sci-fi writing project I have been working on for several months now. I’m currently almost 60k words into it at the time of writing, and am planning on publishing it in full as a novel when I’m done, but I haven’t really shared it with anyone outside my immediate family and a couple friends.
…Normally, I’d post this type of thing on HFY, but in all honesty it doesn’t really paint humans in a very good light most of the time and focuses on the other species involved a for a majority of the time, so it wouldn’t really fit there.
Additionally, while the HASO-ness isn’t too obvious for a few chapters, I promise, we will get there in time.
I don’t know how often I’ll be uploading these, especially given that I’m still not done with it, and have little free time to spend on writing these days; all the same, you can expect plenty of entries over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, feel free to leave your thoughts, any constructive criticisms, etc in the comments. And as always, I hope you enjoy :)
——

CHAPTER 1

Her arm hurt.
She was so, so tired...
Her arm hurt.
She was numb to the cold at this point, but kept shivering anyway.
Her arm hurt.
The only thing close to heat that she felt was the inflammation that was serving to add more throbbing pain to her arm.
…Which hurt, in case that wasn’t clear.
She turned her head to look at it, wincing from the pain the movement caused. It was ugly to behold, with a ragged stab wound in the muscles of her forearm near the elbow that was still slowly trickling blood, but that wasn’t even the worst part of it. She knew from experience that the needle-sharp pain she felt with every slight movement meant that some bone in there- probably the radius or ulna- was also either hairline-fractured or broken entirely.
…And just in case you weren’t aware, fun fact:
It hurt.
A lot.
The pain was only exacerbated by the swollen tissues and irritation around the stab wound that she knew meant it was definitely infected- with what, she could only guess. Whatever it was, she could feel the fever it was causing having a desperate tug-of-war with the cold autumn air to determine her body temperature.
When she couldn’t stand to look at it any longer, she leaned her head back, resting it against the dew-filled grass of the ditch she was lying in and looking up at the star-filled night sky that was slowly lightening to that hue of dark indigo that meant dawn was close, but not quite there.
She used to think the stars were beautiful. But as she lay there, the dreadful memories of what had led to this moment playing over and over in her head… Suffice to say, nothing in this world or outside of it seemed beautiful anymore.
She put the aesthetics of the sky aside and instead struggled to focus her thoughts through the haze of fatigue and pain.
Dawn approaching… That has to mean I’ve been laying here… Jeez, it must be almost an entire day at this point. …I think. It hasn’t been multiple days, surely… Or maybe it’s been-
…Oh, to hell with it. I don’t even care at this point…
She was too tired to sleep, but in too much pain to move. Her brain was fogged from fatigue, and even more so from the constant screaming coming from her nerve endings, desperately trying to let her know that yes, something was very wrong with her arm, she got it, thanks for the message, you can stop now-
…But mostly, the fog stemmed from that draining emotional and mental exhaustion that came with periods of grief. A single tear ran down her face from her already overworked tear ducts, nearly reaching the bruises on her neck before it was wiped away by the shaky fingers of her good arm.
The sky would be there for her to look at later. She needed to try (yet again) to rest, just one more time.
“You know what they say,” she murmured to herself. “76th time’s the charm.”
Delirious with exhaustion and the fever as she was, she couldn’t help herself from chuckling at the thought. Her eyes, bloodshot and burning from the strain she had endured, lazily looked around at what few constellations she could recognize for one last time, and spotted the pattern of Orion in the night sky.
Hey big O, close the door on your way out, eh? I’m gonna try and take a snooze.
She snorted, wincing as she did.
…Finding my own jokes funny. Jesus, I am delirious…
She turned her head to the side and closed her eyes, willing herself to please, please just go to sleep already, because sleep meant being unconscious, and being unconscious meant she could ignore the pain from her arm for a while. And to her surprise, she finally started drifting off. Her breath slowed, the fog visible in the cold air in front of her mouth coming less and less often as she drifted closer to the edge of unconsciousness.
As a result, she barely even heard the soft humming noise approaching, and almost didn’t feel herself being gently, almost imperceptibly lifted off the ground. When she noticed it, what parts of her mind that were still semi-conscious brushed it off as either a dream or hallucination, and slipped behind the wall of sleep…
…For all of two minutes. She wasn’t getting off that easy.
She was jolted awake by a sudden feeling of what could only be described as compression across her whole body, though “compression” hardly did it justice; It was as though she were being squeezed through a drinking straw. …Yet before she could react, the feeling was over.
Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing a dimly-lit room, alive with that same strange humming noise from before. She crinkled her nose at the smell that assailed her nostrils. It was strange, like a combination of various industrial cleaners, engine grease, and ozone. She rubbed her eyelids before she groggily looked around, confused. Where was she? She turned her head and saw a very strange-looking machine that was seemingly floating in midair. She craned her neck, looking past it, and her eyes widened at what she saw glowing through a small, circular viewing window in the nearby wall.
Was that- …Earth?
She slowly, gingerly sat up, wincing from the protests her arm gave at her daring to do such a thing. It took everything in her, but she slowly dragged herself closer to the window, peering out at the planet slowly circling in the void below her. There was no doubt about it, that was Earth. She recognized North and South America, Greenland, even a portion of the northern Arctic. She could even see all the wildfires burning as a result of-
…Well, everything collectively hitting the fan in the past week.
Tilting her head, she could see the exterior of the… building? Satellite? Space station? …Whatever it was she was apparently on, that was outside the window. Gun-metal gray and covered in strange symbols in a language she didn’t recognize, it was unlike anything she’d seen before- and it wasn’t alone.
She saw several other similar… things, floating nearby. They ranged in size from the relatively small, around the size of a house, to absolutely massive ones that she estimated must be miles across. She shook her head in disbelief and laid her head back down on the cold metal floor.
Ok, scratch that, she was obviously still asleep; after all, this had to be the weirdest dream she’d ever had…
Suddenly, a scraping, screeching noise rang through the room, startling her. She looked around and saw a tall, lanky, shadowy figure entering the room they were in as it finished sliding open the metal door that was the source of the noise. Without warning, the room was aglow with a bright light from overhead, causing her to wince and close her eyes. She rubbed her eyelids again, trying to ignore the irritation the action caused, and looked back at the figure, eyes widening as they adjusted to the light- and then even wider, as she froze in place with a gasp at what she saw.
The… creature standing over her was like some horrific combination of a reptile and insect. Its frame was slim and bipedal, with limbs proportioned far longer than any normal human. It towered over her, easily seven feet tall or more. Its head was like that of a praying mantis minus the antennae, with three chameleon-like eyes. The first eye was symmetrically centered in the forehead, the other the two mirrored on the sides of its head where the temples on a human head would be, and all three were very intently focused on her. On its face was a glowing, bioluminescent set of growths all down the front, forming a v-shaped, curving pattern that almost looked like a deranged smile, but its real mouth hid behind a pair of razor-sharp mandibles on its jawline that clicked together a few times as she watched.
Its hide was dark gray and shiny, almost metallic, somewhere between reptilian scales and an insectoid carapace, and generally looked like it would be at home in an H.R. Giger painting. The bioluminescent growths on its face continued down to its torso in three vertical, parallel lines, growing larger as they went further down. Each gangly arm ended in four chitin-covered fingers, tipped with razor-sharp claws.
The only thing even remotely resembling clothing it was wearing was something that looked like a long skirt or kilt, which would probably almost look funny if it weren’t for the fact that the material it was made of almost looked like human skin. From what she saw of the legs underneath it, they were digitrade and almost like those of a bird, with three toes in front and one facing backwards, all with very long claws on them, but no feathers could be seen- just more of that sickly-gray chitinous carapace.
It stood there for a second, silently watching her as she sat there trembling, now more from fear than cold or fever, before all its glowing growths suddenly began to gleam blood-red, and it reached out towards her with one of its clawed arms whilst making a terrifying noise- like the hiss of a cat mixed with the warning signal of a rattlesnake.
Her adrenaline spiked, and the various subdivisions of her brain responsible for survival instincts went into overdrive.
Each presented their findings for peer review: THING. BIG. DEADLY. SCARY.
They rapidly formed a committee and held a brief conference as to the good and proper response to this interesting new development. The vote was both swift and unanimous:
RUN.
The adrenaline surge gave her the endurance she needed to ignore the pain and scramble backwards before finally getting enough traction on the metal floor to get to her feet, turn, and run screaming through the opposite doorway, getting away from the monster as fast as she could.
——
Y’ggdrasog flinched at the sudden movement of the human scrambling awkwardly to her feet with the help of her unbroken arm before sprinting away from him whilst emitting a high-pitched noise he was unfamiliar with, presumably of distress. For a moment, he just stood there, puzzled. What was she doing, and why? All he had done was say “Hello.” Then he remembered himself, and figured he should probably resolve the situation before she bumbled her way out of the airlock or something. He called after her:
<”Wait- please, stop! I mean you no harm! …Why in the name of the spirits above are you running away from-”>
His eyes widened, his bioluminescence rapidly shifting to a bright white as he realized.

He tapped the side of his head to bring up his cranial implant’s heads-up-display interface and quickly went through a few drop-down menus. Finally finding the setting he was looking for, he turned the software back on and then started to run after her. He shook his head as he went, irritated at himself as his bioluminescence changed to an annoyed green to match.

He let out a frustrated sigh and just kept following the loud, high-pitched noises, wincing as he did so.
His ears hurt.

As with Rings Aroun the World this feels a bit out of focus, with talent bubbling beneath the surface but not coming out in fully formed, as good as it could have been, like a 7-month old baby, it is viable, it might have fulfilling life with people that love and care for him.
It is a bit frustrating for me as I feel that this is a band that I could have loved if they had more direction, a bit of pressure from the outside or from within, a dictator on their ranks.

2023.03.21 18:01 Waitress-in-mn Completely lost on how to get the job I want and how to tailor my resume

I'm in a tough situation here, very tough. To start, I have had some short term jobs. I am a server now and have been for a while at different places, I have been at my current place for 8 months. One thing that throws me off is I left the service industry and got a job in a furniture warehouse. How this happened is I saw a post on FB about a job through a temp agency that they were hiring for a customer service work from home job. That is what I want to transition to, atleast to start. A technical customer service job, helpdesk, or just customer service and go from there. Back to the warehouse job, they didn't seem to think I'd be a good fit for the job I guess because they just kept pushing warehouse jobs on me. I decided to go for an interview at the furniture plant and went ahead and took the job. I ended up hating it but I needed a job so I took it. I lasted about 7 months there and couldn't take it anymore. I didn't enjoy the work and it was not a match for my skills either. I went back to serving.
Before the warehouse job I was working for a local company that is similar to Doordash. I had to leave that job because it was becoming too much wear and tear on my car and was not making enough for a new car or for expensive repairs. The driving job was close enough to serving that I'm not really worried. Before that I was at different serving jobs, not lasting at some due to not making enough money or toxic work environments. This industry is very well known for the toxic work environments lol.
I did have work from home jobs before. I worked for a company that outsourced for Apple support and it was work from home. That was back in 2016 though. I also had jobs I did through Upwork. One of the jobs through Upwork was tech support for a small software company but it was only a 3 month job. I am currently studying for the A+ exam, I think that may help some.
This is getting way too long now. I have no clue how to make a resume that will help me look hirable. I am great with people, I have great soft skills. I can highlight those but I don't know where to start with everything else. Could paying someone to help be worth it possibly? Am I screwed basically? Oh I forgot to mention that I will be 40 this year which doesn't help my case.

2023.03.21 17:35 JerryJelly22 Recordkeeping - electronic or paper

Hi all,
I work at an importer and normally we do not get the original bill of ladings like the forwarder do. The only original document we got are the invoices from customers broker and freight forwarders, and sometimes they may attach the entry summary with the billing invoices.
We think it's very unproductive to keep Paper copy nowadays, as the electronic version are so much easier to search.
In this case, should we disregard the paper record method? does anyone has experience to write a request to CBP to change to Alternative method of storage?
§ 163.5 Methods for storage of records.
(a) Original records. All persons listed in § 163.2 must maintain all records required by law and regulation for the required retention periods and as original records, whether paper or electronic, unless alternative storage methods have been adopted in accordance with paragraph (b) of this section. The records, whether in their original format or under an alternative storage method, must be capable of being retrieved upon lawful request or demand by CBP.
(b) Alternative method of storage -
(1) General. Any of the persons listed in § 163.2 may maintain any records, other than records required to be maintained as original records under laws and regulations administered by other Federal government agencies, in an alternative format, provided that the person gives advance written notification of such alternative storage method to the Regulatory Audit, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, 2001 Cross Beam Dr., Charlotte, North Carolina 28217, and provided further that the Director of Regulatory Audit, Charlotte office does not instruct the person in writing as provided herein that certain described records may not be maintained in an alternative format. The written notice to the Director of Regulatory Audit, Charlotte office must be provided at least 30 calendar days before implementation of the alternative storage method, must identify the type of alternative storage method to be used, and must state that the alternative storage method complies with the standards set forth in paragraph (b)(2) of this section. If an alternative storage method covers records that pertain to goods under CBP seizure or detention or that relate to a matter that is currently the subject of an inquiry or investigation or administrative or court proceeding, the appropriate CBP office may instruct the person in writing that those records must be maintained as original records and therefore may not be converted to an alternative format until specific written authorization is received from that CBP office. A written instruction to a person under this paragraph may be issued during the 30-day advance notice period prescribed in this section or at any time thereafter, must describe the records in question with reasonable specificity but need not identify the underlying basis for the instruction, and shall not preclude application of the planned alternative storage method to other records not described therein.
(2) Standards for alternative storage methods. Methods commonly used in standard business practice for storage of records include, but are not limited to, machine readable data, CD ROM, and microfiche. Methods that are in compliance with generally accepted business standards will generally satisfy CBP requirements, provided that the method used allows for retrieval of records requested within a reasonable time after the request and provided that adequate provisions exist to prevent alteration, destruction, or deterioration of the records. The following standards must be applied by recordkeepers when using alternative storage methods:
(i) Operational and written procedures are in place to ensure that the imaging and/or other media storage process preserves the integrity, readability, and security of the information contained in the original records. The procedures must include a standardized retrieval process for such records. Vendor specifications/documentation and benchmark data must be available for CBP review;
(ii) There is an effective labeling, naming, filing, and indexing system;
(iii) Except in the case of packing lists (see § 163.4(b)(2)), entry records must be maintained by the importer in their original formats for a period of 120 calendar days from the end of the release or conditional release period, whichever is later, or, if a demand for return to CBP custody has been issued, for a period of 120 calendar days either from the date the goods are redelivered or from the date specified in the demand as the latest redelivery date if redelivery has not taken place. Customs brokers who are not serving as the importer of record and who maintain separate electronic records are exempted from this requirement. This exemption does not apply to any document that is required by law to be maintained as a paper record.
(iv) An internal testing of the system must be performed on a yearly basis;
(v) The recordkeeper must have the capability to make, and must bear the cost of, hard-copy reproductions of alternatively stored records that are required by CBP for audit, inquiry, investigation, or inspection of such records; and
(vi) The recordkeeper must retain and keep available one working copy and one back-up copy of the records stored in a secure location for the required periods as provided in § 163.4.
(3) Changes to alternative storage procedures. No changes to alternative recordkeeping procedures may be made without first notifying the Director of Regulatory Audit, Office of International Trade, Customs and Border Protection, 2001 Cross Beam Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina 28217. The notification must be in writing and must be provided to the director at least 30 calendar days before implementation of the change.
(4) Penalties. All persons listed in § 163.2 who use alternative storage methods for records and who fail to maintain or produce the records in accordance with this part are subject to penalties pursuant to § 163.6 for entry records or sanctions pursuant to §§ 163.9 and 163.10 for other records.
(5) Failure to comply with alternative storage requirements. If a person listed in § 163.2 uses an alternative storage method for records that is not in compliance with the conditions and requirements of this section, CBP may issue a written notice informing the person of the facts giving rise to the notice and directing that the alternative storage method must be discontinued in 30 calendar days unless the person provides written notice to the issuing CBP office within that time period that explains, to CBP's satisfaction, how compliance has been achieved. Failure to timely respond to CBP will result in CBP requiring discontinuance of the alternative storage method until a written statement explaining how compliance has been achieved has been received and accepted by CBP.
[T.D. 98-56, 63 FR 32946, June 16, 1998, as amended by CBP Dec. 12-12, 77 FR 33966, June 8, 2012]

2023.03.21 17:24 malkien Finding a new mini pc

Many years ago I bought an Alienware Steam Machine (Nvidia GTX 960) for my tv. It was exactly what I wanted, and served me for a long time even when SteamOS was abandoned, thanks to ChimeraOS. Now it's finally becoming unusable after the release of Steam's new UI. It's time for a replacement, but what to buy is not immediately apparent. Do you have any suggestions?
My personal requirements would be: * set-top box form factor (space constraints) * recent AMD gpu

not necessarily shrinkflation, but the ingredients and flavor completely changed. i remember the ingredients atleast having sugar, corn syrup, flour and then all the chemicals. they now taste like tums medicine, so the box didn't get smaller but they're using cheaper ingredients.

2023.03.21 16:58 Raines1819 Married 28 years, DB about 25 years, I just woke up and now I'm lost

I (58M) and wife (65) have been married for 28 years.
Our sex life did a nose dive not long after the birth of our youngest (27M). At this time they are still living with us (2 boys 27 and 28).
I am as much to blame in regard to the DB as my wife. After our youngest was born, my wife started to refuse intimacy more and more, and since I snore (I can wake the dead) I started to sleep on the couch because she couldn't get any sleep. Other then that we are rather solid with each other.
In October my wife turned 65 and opted to retire, her last day was November 4 2023. I also have to add that she had an option to continue work, but the company wouldn't increase her pay to cover the added costs (some of the extended benefits not covered after 65)
About the time my wife started talking about retiring, I "woke up" after reflecting on our life after retirement. Without the distraction of our jobs (I will probably retire at 60) and the kids moving out, what will we have (or more accurately, what will I have)
  1. No sex (this was stated by her)
  2. Roommate living conditions
  3. Only way I can sleep in our bed, is if I use a C-pap machine (not bue to apnea, just soft pallet) (and I also look like a Teletubby with the thing strapped to my head) I hate the thing.
  4. little or no physical touch (my love language) (hers are words of affirmation)
In October I thought that I could spice things up in the bedroom, just like switching a switch. Was I wrong.
I tried to give her a passionate kiss. That was met with her pushing me away. I lost it and went on a very long walk to try and come to terms with what just happened.
I tried to talk to her (that was when she stated that she wasn't interested in sex anymore) and is just fine with how our relationship is now. I went to IC and came to the conclusion that I have a few choices
  1. Live with the fact that I will never have physical contact with the person that I am married to (not just sexual, but little contact in general)
  2. Open the relationship (Not going to happen)
  3. Divorce and take my chances on finding someone that I can love and show me the same. At 58, slim I think.
We are having a hard time trying to talk to each other, as both of our frustration levels peek and we go nowhere. We are roommates that share a bank account and house duties.
I love my wife, and our life (as much as I can seeing that we are roommates) I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can possible do other than MC? (scheduled for next month)

2023.03.21 16:48 Kogworks An analysis of Samus’ history, Pt. 1

  1. Origins
  2. Youth
1. Origins
Samus’ story basically starts when Ridley basically slaughters Samus’ parents in front of her eyes, with her mother pushing her out of the way to take a blow that had been meant for her.
This not only sets up Ridely as Samus’ arch nemesis for the rest of the series, but also serves as a traumatic experience she has to wrestle with for the rest of her life.
It’s worth noting that the source of the trauma here likely isn’t just a feeling of helplessness, but also one of guilt, seeing as her mother died “because” of her in a sense.
She is then taken in by the Thoha Chozo, who take her to Zebes, their ancient homeworld.
What’s worth noting is that Samus is already tied to the Metroids at this point.
This entire chain of events is actually sparked by the Chozo’s discovery of the X on SR388, and their subsequent development of Metroids.
The Thoha Chozo are already wary of the Galactic Federation at this point in time, worried about what certain elements would do if they found out about the X.
The Thoha visited her parents’ space colony in search of energy resources needed to speed up Metroid development, accidentally drawing Ridley’s attention.
2. Youth
Samus grows up on Zebes without any Earthlings to interact with.
I say “earthling” and not “human” here because Samus DOES have human interaction with her Thoha foster parents. But they’re of a different species.
People are social creatures and a sense of identity and communion is very important to one’s mental health. But Samus grows up without anyone from her “group”.
There are no children on Zebes, and there are no Earthlings. Furthermore, most of her social interaction is limited to Old Bird, Gray Voice, and Mother Brain.
Samus was robbed of her childhood, while also being robbed of developmental experiences crucial to growing up. She is neither child nor adult.
What’s even more terrifying is what it takes to keep her alive.
She’s infused with Chozo DNA to help her adapt to Zebes. But as of Dread we learn that it’s not just Thoha DNA. It’s Mawkin as well. Raven Beak.
Samus has been infused with the power of the Thoha’s strongest warrior. But Raven Beak isn’t exactly an altruist. He’s a heartless monster.
Raven Beak isn’t present for most of Samus’ childhood despite being one of her three Chozo fathers. To him, she’s probably just another experiment. A weapon.
And that’s what Samus is raised as.
It’s worth noting that despite being more “human” than Raven Beak, the Thoha are still cold-hearted pragmatists in their own right. Samus is given a Power Suit.
A weapon, which, the Thoha Chozo cannot use due to their mental blocks. As kind as the Thoha are, they are essentially raising Samus to be a soldier in their stead.
Not out of cruelty, but out of necessity. SOMEONE has to be a soldier to protect the peace, and the Thoha have bottlenecked themselves into being unable to do so.
But Samus? She doesn’t WANT to be a soldier.
Up until this point, Samus is still just an ordinary kid. She still has the same bubbly innocence she did when she was younger, and appreciates the beauty of life.
When Gray Voice orders the defense systems to burn the invasive plants and kill the fauna that brought said plants there, Samus opts to disarm the fauna instead.
Samus saves the fauna, only for the defense systems to burn them to death anyways. And in a moment of rage, Samus destroys some of the Chozo’s machines.
As spiritual as the Thoha are, even they lack the hope and humanity that Samus has.
This moment with Gray Voice is interesting, because even though the Thoha can’t personally harm life themselves, they can still have others do the dirty work.
Again, the Thoha aren’t saints. They’re hypocritical pragmatists who will have others kill for them if need be, while keeping their own hands clean with their blocks.
The Thoha are just as old and jaded as the Mawkin. Their only “children” are weapons and soldiers raised to fight on their behalf. Samus and the Metroids.
So Old Bird lets Samus go.
Old Bird realizes that Samus is different. Unlike the Chozo, who are in decline due to the errors of how cold and calculating they are, Samus has heart.
Raven Beak has a mantra. Power is everything. But when Old Bird has Samus leave the nest? He reminds her of the importance of the heart.
When you first read the manga it sounds like Old Bird is telling Samus to master her emotions, but now I think it’s the opposite. He’s telling her to keep her innocence.
To not chain herself to the Chozo’s war culture.
Having seen Samus grow up, Old Bird comes to realize what the Chozo have been missing. What a “true” guardian of the galaxy should be.
Someone with compassion. Compassion and sympathy are the road to peace, not conquests of absolute power or decisions of cold-hearted rationality.
And so, Samus leaves her nest.

Value cannot be null. Parameter name: fileName
Trying to set up Veeam backup and replication community edition in my environment.
We have two Server 2016 standard machines, one is a DC, the other serves RDS and SQL
Veeam has successfully backed up two Linux VMs as well as the RDS server without any issues, but when trying to back up our DC, it throws the error "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: fileName" every time.
This issue has been persistent since the first backup attempt and I can't seem to find info on that specific error. Looking at the task logs, it appears that the agent just stops responding and the job times out.

Chapter 09

Station Guild Hyangjing Voidstation

Station Masters Office

Corley Openheim was sulking at the moment. A viewscreen dazzled light on the wall opposite him, playing the latest Zargs Revenge epic. The audio seemed to just emanate from every surface.
The sex on the screen was becoming brutal, the violence epic, but Corley could care less about the climatic end of the latest holo-epic. He was more worried about the numbers on his terminal screens.
They were red.
"Red is such an ugly color! So chaotic, so raw, so…negative!" Corley said out loud to himself, trying not to let the tears start again. Red only meant one thing to Corley.
It meant he was losing money.
Corley was the youngest ever Station Master inducted into the Guild. His office was spartan in the “I Love Me” decoration department, with only his Station Master Sigil hanging on the wall and a few small personal knick-knacks here and there. The War was no longer becoming a profit for the Stations. The front lines had become stagnant, neither the Solidarity or Republics side gaining any headway against each other. Both sides were economically viable to support, for if either side won the number of Void Stations needing to be licensed would go up.
However the ugly, angry colored numbers staring back at Corley meant that currently, HIS Void Station was operating at a loss. The Guild did NOT appreciate loss, in any form. Corley stood from his overly-designed desk chair, which hovered on three anti-grav pucks. This chair slid effortlessly back then magnetically locked itself into place whenever Corley let it go. A small sound played from the chair as he walked away;
“General Republic thanks you for using the Hfluger AG Office Chair! Comfort, Floating! General Republic, There For You!”
After a few minutes of self induced stress pacing, Corley stopped and raised a hand in surprise, then turning it into a fist and pumping it in the air. Corley had recalled that there were several Solidarity ships currently docked at his station. Corley walked to the huge oaken double doors that lead out into the lobby of his office, opened one, and stuck his head out. He looked at the receptionist, who was currently watching something on her OptiLens.
”...Mrs. Kip, dear, can you parse a query and find me a Soddy officer who owes me money?”
The woman blinked her eyes a few times, looked at Corley, and smiled. Corley pulled his head back in, and walked to the desk. By the time his Armani-Bok pants touched the Anti-Grav Office chairs seat, a chime came from everywhere around Corley.
Stroking his chin, Corley Openheim started to think. He opened the report that Mrs. Kip had sent him. It was a dossier on a Solidarity Flotilla Captain and his 3 Yanzin class destroyers currently docked at the station.
As Corley went over the Captains financial situation, an important message appeared in his ComMail folder. Curiously, it was marked “Priority: ALL STATION MASTERS OPEN ASAP.”
Somewhat surprised at the title, Openheim opened it.
He skimmed over it briefly, not really paying much attention, but then certain words caught his attention. His face paled at its content.
“All Station Masters, be aware: An unknown and unlicensed Voidstation has been detected at these galactic coordinates. A Guild ordered Automated Survey drone sent back these images of the station. Its origins and make-up are unknown.”
Corley Openheim tilted his head a bit and looked at the static images of the unlicensed voidstation. It looked like nothing he had seen before, it looked more like a stinging bugs nest than a hulking mass of rings and gantries.
He clicked on a video and a scene of tiny specks of engine plumes and movement around the station played. He read further:
“In the interest of the Guild and her profit, the Guild has chosen a single flotilla of Guild ships to ascertain who the owners of this station are, and cease its operation. Be advised, all Station Masters CC’d must submit a single ship from their forces to make up this flotilla.”
Corley opened the list.
There his name was, right at the top. The number 1 sat beside it. So that meant he was only responsible for sending a single Guildship to aid in enforcement. He dared not send a ship in his service, for he would have to pay for every single person aboard it, their supplies, its weapons stores and replace anything that's lost or stolen.
As Corley puzzled over this dilemma, an idea popped into his head. Excitedly, Corley Openheim closed the urgent message, not really paying attention to its implications as unlicensed voidstations were always being built, and the Guild was always maintaining the legitimacy of the Guild. He keyed Mrs. Kip.
“Get Mr. Xuan here ASAP, Mrs. Kip!”
Jing Hyan Xuan had sat patiently waiting in the antechamber of the Station Masters office longer than he wanted. The decadent decorations of the inherently evil Guild disgusted the die hard Solidarity fleet officer. The fact was that the majority of the wealth that the Station Guild held was because of their unjust monopoly on Voidstation licenses. This irked Jing Xuan a lot. He was a proud Solidarity officer. The War with the Republic had gotten stale, with either side unable to gain any significant advantage against each other in any contested system.
As Jing mulled over The War, the receptionist that was sitting in the corner cleared her throat.
“Mr. Openheim will see you now.”
Jumping a little, Jing stood and bowed. The huge wooden double doors swung open. Jing walked through into a brightly lit office. It wasn’t large, with just a desk and a chair and the Station Master sigil on the wall behind the nerdy looking man sitting at the desk. The man seemed to be reading something on his terminal screen over and over.
Jing approached the desk and saluted. The woman cleared her throat and spoke loudly;
“Mr. Xuan, like you asked.” and promptly left the room, closing the door behind her.
Corley Openheim looked up from his terminal screen and smiled.
“Welcome, Mr. Xuan! I want to commend you on your recent successful mission! But that isn’t why you are here. So take a seat, Mr. Xuan.”
Jing furrowed his eyebrows at that statement, and sat as he was asked.
“Mr. Xuan, are you aware of why I called you here today?” Corley said, pushing himself away from his desk and leaning back. The AG chair floated soundlessly across the floor.
“General Republic thanks you for using the Hfluger AG Office Chair! Comfort, Floating! General Republic, There For You!”
A moment passed and then the Solidarity officer spoke.
“I am an officer of the Peoples System of Solidarity. I am not beholden to your Guilds whims. No, I do not know why I am here, Station Master.”
Corley smiled broadly at this, and leaned forward in his chair. The hologram screens of his terminal turned off.
“Mr. Xuan, in the interest of time and brevity, I don’t care what nation you serve. You owe the Guild money! Twice you’ve docked your ships at this station, and twice you haven’t paid your Surplus Supply storage fees! You are aware that non-payment of Guild services can lead to the confiscation of any ship those supplies are for?”
Jing Hyan Xuans blood began to boil as soon as the arrogant man across from him stated his ignorance of his Service to the Solidarity. He was a war fighting sailor, not a chump the Guild could push around. Angrily, Xuan stood and began to yell at the Station Mation.
“I refuse to pay your predatory fees, Station Master! I cannot help that I am not using every single item that my ship is supplied with! An excess of supply is good in this war time economy, and forcing the Solidarity to pay YOU to store OUR supplies is wasteful! And I DARE you to seize ANY of my ships!”
The words hung over Xuan, lingering in the air like the foul things he had said. The arrogant, greedy Station Master sat staring at the Solidarity Fleet officer. A few moments of silence passed, and then the man snorted, and turned his terminal screens on. He typed rapidly, and projected what came up in front of Xuan, big and bright and clearly visible.
It was his signature, on the Guild Stations Docking contract. His DNA mark, in detail, and dental record.
“Mr. Xuan, you have 3 Yanzin class Destroyers under your command currently docked aboard our Station. I am confiscating each one, their crews and their supplies for a special Guild operation. I am going to give you a choice, Mr. Xuan. Command your ships at the Guilds behest, or explain to your precious Solidarity government how a foolish Captain squandered three warships by signing a contract. A contract your Government has sworn to abide by to facilitate its war against the Republic. Which will you survive?”
Flotilla Captain Jing Hyan Xuan sat back down while the Station Master spoke, all of the bluster in his fight blown out. He pondered the question for a moment. The implication. It was always the implications.
Xuan stood again, but this time he bowed. No sense in getting his head chopped off for gross negligence and loss of fleet assets. Or…Xuan let the idea grow and fester. It gorged itself on the possibilities. He blurted out loud:
“I will command the ships at the behest of the Guild, Station Master. It seems though, regardless of how I feel, I cannot win.”
The Station Master smiled his broad smile and stood from his chair, coming around the desk to take the Solidarity officer in a grand embrace. The officer stood straight and stiff, but Openheim shook him and stepped back.
“You are a smart, good man Mr. Xuan! I’ll handle the specifics about your ships with your Fleet. Mrs Kip? Put Mr. Xuan on as a temporary Captain of the Guild.”
A distant soft voice sounded from the lobby. “Yes sir, Mr. Openheim.”
Xuan bowed to the man. Openheim turned away from Xuan and returned to his desk. He sat down in his decadent chair and said to Xuan:
“Upon completion of this operation you’ll be released back to the Solidarity Fleet along with your ships and crews. I highly doubt what you are tasked to do will be difficult. You’re gonna be a part of a flotilla to go destroy an unlicensed voidstation! So exciting!”
Xuan bowed once more to Corley Openheim.
“Sir, I will do as you command. Do I have permission to depart and get my ships prepared?”
Openheim waved a hand. “Yes, go. I’ll send you a CoMail in a few moments with the details. Have fun!”
Jing Huan Xuan turned and marched out of the Station Masters office, determined to do his duty well. However, he had his personal needs first and foremost to be met.
“Now that old woman and kid doesn’t sound so bad right now…”

2023.03.21 15:14 ZobeidZuma Becky Chambers - Wayfarer books - science and world-building that drives me up the wall

I just recently finished the audiobook version of the first book (Angry Planet), and then, with mixed feelings, I started the second. . . which I'm barely into, it's already driven me up the wall.
I understand the appeal of all the well-defined characterization and interactions, the slice-of-life and soap opera stuff. It's very well done. It's engaging. And the reason I started the second book was because, I just wanted to see what happens next to these people. However. . .
The "science" in these books absolutely drives me up the wall. When they go into world-building and start trying to explain how things work, it breaks my suspension of disbelief and takes me right out of the story, away from the characters, and then I have to take a break and pace around and rant for a while about how stupid it is.
Examples. . .
And that's where I am now. This is not science fiction. This is fantasy with a SF facade. And I don't hate "soft" SF, I don't hate SF that fudges a lot of science. I've read my share of space opera in days gone by. (I was reminded just a bit of ADF's Humanx Commonwealth books.) In my experience, though, most such SF is savvy enough to gloss over things like FTL and power sources that don't make sense, rather than draw attention to them with explanations that many grade school students could poke holes through. It gives the impression that the author either flunked grade school science class or is just trolling us all. (Incidentally, I remember running into much the same phenomena when I read Battlefield Earth, but I'm pretty sure Hubbard was deliberately trolling us all. I don't get that feeling so much from Chambers.)

2023.03.21 14:58 Konstance-Kay [God of Discovery] Arc 2, Chap 7 - Civil unrest, part 1

[Arc 1 first chapter] [Previous chapter]
-------------------------
After returning home for the first time in centuries, D'Argen is sent off to explore the truth behind a rumour that demons have returned. Fortunately, no demons were found, but something even more dangerous was. D'Argen has confirmed that there is something strange happening with the magic in Trace. Now, he just has to convince the others and figure out what it really is. Unfortunately, returning to the gods' main city with the exiled god Thar in tow is proving to be too distracting.
When the prospect of new lands in the coldest reaches of Trace calls for him, he learns just how dangerous this new magic can be. Despite Thar's powers over the cold, going where no mortal or god has ever been before is dangerous. Even more so when that strange magic influences both him and his companions. But despite Thar's growing powers and Lilian's diminishing interests, D'Argen pushes forward into the unknown and into a relationship that could threaten the future of the gods as they exist.
-------------------------
D’Argen did not drink nearly enough to feel the effects of the alcohol so he only nudged the plate in front of him away instead of throwing it. It was not the staff’s fault. Since D’Argen had returned to the city, he had not gone anywhere near the kitchens and this was the first time the serving or kitchen staff probably saw him. So it was not the mortal’s fault that D’Argen wanted to gag just at the sight of the fried chicken in front of him.
D’Argen was one of a few Never Born that did not need to consume any food or drink for his body to function. He was, however, the only one dramatic enough to outright refuse to put anything in his mouth that was once alive. Honey. He liked honey, though it was usually too sweet for more than a single spoonful, and mead.
When the second staff member passed behind him holding a large silver pitcher, D’Argen placed a hand on top of his glass to prevent them from pouring the wine. The woman moved on without a word and topped off Cana’s glass right beside him.
Cana, like D’Argen, did not need to consume food or drink. She, however, enjoyed it.
D’Argen was a little peeved to note that the plate in front of her was piled with intricately cut and perfectly seasoned vegetables rather than the meat on all other plates.
It was not the staff’s fault that Cana’s dislike for meat was better known than D’Argen’s dislike of all food in general. Acela probably remembered Cana’s tastes but not D’Argen’s. When D’Argen chanced a look at the queen, he caught her eyes for barely a moment before she broke contact first. And he caught something else. It was strange. There was something on her face, her expression, that he did not recognize at all. He was either more intoxicated than he thought, or she had never once made that face before him.
Once all the plates were set and both the white and red wine had gone along the long table, D’Argen flagged one of the staff to ask for mead.
He did not have nearly enough alcohol in him to survive this dinner without snapping. Not when Lilian was sitting diagonally from him, their jacket covering only one arm and the other bare to the room. The skin was smooth and unblemished as Lilian wrapped that arm around Abbot with a wide grin and whispered something into his ear. The artist stifled a laugh. D’Argen held back a grimace.
The entire time they had been drinking earlier, D’Argen felt a tension in his body that he could not explain. Not when Lilian was joking and laughing with both Abbot and Yaling as if nothing had happened. Not when he remembered seeing Acela leave their rooms.
D’Argen downed the entire glass of mead as soon as it was poured and the man, who had barely taken a step back, topped it up. He hesitated, waiting, but D’Argen stopped himself from downing the second glass. It would not do to lose sense of himself completely.
Then one set of the dining hall doors opened and no matter how little or how much he had drank, nothing would have been able to keep his mouth from dropping open in shock.
Olov, God of Passage, apologized for being late before he had even stepped fully into the large dining hall. The silence from his entrance was awkward not because he was late but because of his appearance. He ignored it as he passed one of the staff and then pointed to an empty seat at the long table.
D’Argen snapped his mouth closed when the two met eyes and chanced a quick look around the table. He was glad to note he was not the only one surprised.
Olov’s long silvery hair, a shimmering cascade of straight lines, was almost completely gone. The man looked like he had taken a dull spoon to his scalp and had cut most of it off and shaved the rest. It left half of his head completely bare and the rest were strands so short they barely reached his chin.
D’Argen had never seen one of them with such short hair.
There were others that shaved parts of their head, but the length always remained. It was an unspoken rule: Never Born kept their hair long. It was a symbol of who they were and their status.
Acela had only once made a direct comment to that when she was addressing a visiting delegation of mortals whose staff were completely bald. The mortal king had said it was a way to easily recognize their slaves. Acela could not hide her displeasure at the time. The day the delegation left, she signed a trading agreement with one of the villages near the coast and had a steady supply of hair oils and accessories for all of Evadia.
Olov took a seat further down the table, as far as possible from Acela. There were almost two dozen of them sitting in the giant dining hall on the long table. There were enough bodies between him and Acela’s glare for the man to ignore it. He thanked the staff once they put a plate in front of him and he chose white wine.
Acela cleared her throat and all eyes fell on her at the head of the table. “Your delay?” she asked, obviously wanting to reprimand him otherwise, visible by the way her eyes could not stay focused on a single point on his face.
“That was my fault,” Cana spoke up from right beside D’Argen. “I had asked Olov to do something for me and that must have delayed him in getting dressed.”
Acele was glaring at Cana now and D’Argen leaned back in his seat to avoid being in her direct sight. Her eyes jumped to him for just a moment, squinted back into that unreadable expression, then turned to Olov.
“I am glad you are here,” she said. “I did not know you had even arrived.”
D’Argen downed half his glass to steady his nerves.
“I just arrived a few hours prior. We have been talking with Cana about changes to the summer harvest for the life crops when she told me about the dinner. I know I am without an invitation—”
“Invitations are only a formality,” Acela interrupted with a wave of her hand but her eyes turned back to Cana. “Now that you mentioned it though, that is one topic I wished for us to discuss. We heard that there was unrest in your region?” Somehow, she was able to make the statement sound like a question.
Zetha, sitting on her right at the head of the table, hid his expression behind a glass as he drank. D’Argen was not sure if he was trying to hide discomfort or a grin. He did, however, know that the glass was a good excuse and sitting beside Cana, he needed the excuse. He drank from his glass to hide his grimace and leaned back, trying to become one with the soft backing of his chair. A glance in front of him revealed Lilian trying to hide a grin behind their hand. He noticed the pale, unmarked skin of their arm and quickly looked away.
Twenty of them were sitting there and though D’Argen had seen most of them over the last few weeks, there was one familiar face that was missing.
Thar was not invited to the dinner. And even if the invitations were only a formality, he had either not known about it at all or had refused to come. D’Argen wished he followed the man’s example and avoided this event altogether. He was not needed here.
“—a misunderstanding. It has been cleared.”
D’Argen tuned into Cana’s words only to catch the end as she cut up one of the browned stems of broccoli on her plate and then took the bite. She was slow and deliberate about it and the crunch was loud in the silent hall. D’Argen tried to search his subconscious for what she said even though he had not been paying attention. A scrape distracted him and he looked down the table. Acela was using her knife and fork with force to cut chunks of moist meat off the bone. D’Argen looked away when he felt the alcohol in his stomach churn and try to rise at the small ooze of blood and juices on her plate.
The silence stretched on as the queen chewed her bite. Finally, she swallowed and said, “Please, explain more about this misunderstanding.”
“The people did not see the benefit of harvesting the Rainbow Forest in winter, especially with the spring reaping still scheduled as usual. I reached out to Kenin, he intervened, and all was resolved.” Cana’s answers were prompt as if she did not want to discuss the topic at all.
“And Olov?”
“As one of the other two sentries of life crops in Trace, I thought it would be beneficial to learn from him how he deals with it.”
“But the situation is quite different,” Olov added in, looking up from his plate to face Acela. “The citizens of Tormdale are rarely involved and my city only serves as a border. I suggested she ask Darania for advice since the Rainbow Forest is more alike to the Reefs she watches over.”
“Then we both thought maybe Kiri would be a good option to ask as well, since he is the one that takes care of organizing the spring and autumn reapings of the Rainbow Fields.”
Acela hummed and made a show of looking down both sides of the long table. Neither Darania nor Kiri was there. She returned to looking at Olov.
“I was drafting a letter to Darania while the staff looked for something appropriate for me to wear.”
“A letter?” Someone at the table asked as if writing it down on paper and sending it off was so archaic that it deserved disbelief.
“I was unaware that D’Argen was back,” Olov replied, looking right at the runner rather than the person who had asked. “It is good to see you.”
“And you,” D’Argen replied out of habit and raised his glass in a greeting toast. Olov returned the gesture and D’Argen finished off the rest of his drink. He looked down the table over the rim of his glass and noticed that Acela was now glaring at him.
“It is good to have D’Argen back. We will definitely be needing his help in the coming months,” Zetha finally joined the conversation and raised his own glass towards D’Argen. The runner already finished his drink but mirrored the motion and faked a sip. “And you too, Olov. It has been a while since you have been back. After dinner, come to my study. We have new spells for all aspects of the mahee, focused on long-distance communication.”
“Of course, my king,” Olov replied and raised his chin high in the air.
D’Argen motioned to the mortal staff member that had poured him the mead and the man quickly refilled his glass.

Help me upgrade this sad office kitchen corner. What do you reccomend? Looking to jump in with both feet.
I am not new to espresso and coffee in general. I'm willing to learn how to dial in a good quality machine and grinder. There won't be multiple employees using the setup, it would just be myself and my brother. We would be serving it to the odd visiting clients and ourselves of course! Willing to expense a decent setup that will make impressive espresso and will be built to last. I don't want to have to upgrade down the road, I want to buy it once. What do you reccomend? Not saying money is no object, but I'd want something that we will be happy with for at least 10 years. What's a relaistic budget and which equipment should i start to look at? Located in Canada.

Australian Aerospace Company Hypersonix Launch Systems to Develop High-Speed Aircraft for Pentagon’s Hypersonic Testing
The U.S. Department of Defense has selected Hypersonix Launch Systems, an Australian aerospace company, to develop a high-speed aircraft to test hypersonic technologies. The aircraft, called DART AE, will test high-speed platforms, components, sensors, and communication and control systems. According to Hypersonix, DART AE is powered by a hydrogen-fueled scramjet engine and can fly at speeds up to Mach 7.
The Defense Innovation Unit’s Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) program aims to alleviate the strain on government test infrastructure by partnering with non-traditional companies. DIU has not disclosed the value of the contract. Testing infrastructure has been a limiting factor in the development of hypersonic technologies, and the Pentagon aims to increase the cadence and fly at least one test per week, with HyCAT being part of that strategy.
DIU also awarded a contract to California-based Fenix Space to build a reusable tow-launch system. The data and analyses resulting from these prototype tests will accelerate the evaluation of potential weapon system concepts, technologies, and mission sets.
The aircraft developed by Hypersonix is scheduled to fly for the first time in early 2024, with HyCAT testing expected to begin in the next 12-18 months.

President Biden Signs Presidential Waiver of Statutory Requirements for Supply Chain Resilience > U.S. Department of Defense > Release

THEN ON MARCH 1, 2023 ~Biden invokes Defense Production Act to expand production of Hypersonics

Biden invokes Defense Production Act to expand production of hypersonics DefenseScoop
Doing so, Biden hopes to stimulate the production of "airbreathing engines, advanced avionics position navigation and guidance systems, and CONSTITUENT MATERIALS FOR HYPERSONIC SYSTEMS."
BYBILLY MITCHELL
Lockheed Martin's hypersonic Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) is intended to travel 500 miles in just 10 minutes once fired from a B-52 bomber. That's 3,000 mph, versus about 500 mph for a conventional weapon. Mike Tsukamoto/staff; Lockheed Martin; USAF
The memo circulated by the White House, and scheduled to soon hit the Federal Register, calls for the federal government to take action to accelerate and stimulate the production of “airbreathing engines, advanced avionics position navigation and guidance systems, and constituent materials for hypersonic systems,” which Biden calls “essential to the national defense.”

“[W]ithout Presidential action under section 303 of the Act, United States industry cannot reasonably be expected to provide the additional investment required to provide airbreathing engines and CONSTITUENT MATERIALS for hypersonic systems adequately and in a timely manner,” the memo says.

MARCH 13, 2023 ~ C) (Follow up) - Is Niocorp still engaged with \"Several Federal Agencies\" other than the EXIM Bank as sources for \"Debt\" or Off-take agreements? Comment if you can...
Response: ~"Yes, multiple federal agencies, elected officials in the Congress, and the WH. "~
(So as of March 13th 2023..... "STUFF CONTINUES TO BE HAPPENING I GUESS!")

“Specifically included in the Waiver are defense organic industrial base supply chains critical to the DoD as well as critical supply chains for electronics, kinetic capabilities, castings and forgings, minerals and materials, and power and energy storage. This authority also affords the ability to invest in strategic areas that enable the industrial base such as workforce development,” the DOD said.

NIOBIUM ~What are Hypersonic Technologies & Why are They Important?

Niobium & C-103: What Makes it Unique for Hypersonics? - Domaille Engineering
Hypersonic technology has the potential to revolutionize transportation, allowing aircraft and missiles to travel at Mach Five (3,838 miles per hour) or higher speeds. Five times the speed of sound, these vehicles can soar one mile per second. Put in perspective, a commercial jetliner typically travels 460 – 575 miles per hour, which is about Mach 0.75 – 0.85.
With the advent of this new technology, new classes of flight vehicles have faster access to a military response, commercial air travel and space. In addition, hypersonic vehicles would be less reliant on traditional fuel sources, making them more environmentally friendly.
To achieve these high speeds, however, hypersonic vehicles must be incredibly strong and heat resistant. This is where niobium comes into the equation.

Niobium: The Metal of the Future

Niobium and columbium are interchangeable names for the element with the symbol Nb and atomic number 41. This rare element is primarily sourced from Brazil and is mined from tantalite and pyrochlore ores.
A transition metal that is soft and ductile, niobium forms a thin oxide film to protect from corrosion when exposed to oxygen. In its pure metal form, this element is incredibly versatile. In addition to its use in alloys, Niobium is leveraged in the construction of rocket subassemblies, jet engine components, and combustion equipment. The high melting point (2,469°C) and low density of niobium allow these types of parts to operate at extremely high temperatures with excellent corrosion resistance.
Outside the Aerospace and Defense sector, the material can be used in the production of superconducting magnets that power trains, MRI machines, and even the energy particle accelerator at CERN in Switzerland. It’s a truly diverse metal with a wide range of applications.

MARCH 16, 2023 TITANIUM~ NPS Student Operational Insight and Faculty Collaboration Advances Hypersonics Applied Research

NPS Student Operational Insight and Faculty Collaboration Advances Hypersonics Applied Research > United States Navy > News-Stories

From Matthew Schehl, Naval Postgraduate School Office of University Communications

MONTEREY, Calif. - In a small area – 4 inches by 4 inches, to be precise – in a Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) research laboratory, a uniquely-capable facility is supporting foundational hypersonics research and preparing U.S. Navy and Marine Corps officers to advance, integrate, and employ the sea services’ emerging hypersonic capabilities.

Over the next year, the team will focus on modeling and investigating the elemental physics of hypersonics, Hobson says. Drawing extensively on Xerox’s first liquid metal printer and a small powder bed metal printer, NPS engineers are able to fabricate a wide variety of components out of different metals, including ALUMINUM and TITANIUM, predict their performance using computational fluid dynamics, and see how they perform under hypersonic conditions.

MARCH 14, 2023 ~~Navy seeks $900M for Hypersonics R&D, plans to buy 8 Conventional Prompt Strike missiles in 2024~

The sea service is looking to buy eight “all-up rounds” and associated canisters for Conventional Prompt Strike weapons in 2024, marking the first procurement of the missiles.
Wallops Island, Virginia, Oct. 21, 2021. U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs and the Army Hypersonic Program Office successfully conducted a High Operational Tempo for Hypersonics flight campaign. This test informed the development of the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike and the Army’s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon offensive hypersonic strike capability. (U.S. Navy Photo/Released)
The Navy is asking lawmakers for $901 million in fiscal 2024 for research, development, test and evaluation work for its Conventional Prompt Strike program, as it pursues plans to integrate hypersonic missiles into destroyers and submarines.
The sea service is also looking to buy eight “all-up rounds” and associated canisters for CPS weapons in 2024, marking the first procurement of the missiles. The Navy intends to procure a total of 64 rounds in fiscal 2024-2028, according to budget documents released Monday.
Hypersonic weapons are a high priority for the Department of Defense writ large as it tries to catch up with China and Russia in this area. These types of missiles are designed to fly faster than Mach 5 and be highly maneuverable against enemy air defenses.
“The CPS weapon system will deliver a hypersonic conventional offensive strike capability through a depressed boost-glide trajectory to prosecute deep-inland, time-critical, soft and medium-hardened targets in contested environments,” according to Navy budget documents.

2023.03.21 13:04 maxdickrider A Rant About Solo Queueing

I am aware that this post serves absolutely no purpose, but I must let out my frustration one way or the other.
I am currently solo queueing through Platinum for the first time since Season 13, and I find the experience absolutely abysmal. I don't understand how my teammates can be so unbelievably soft in the head whilst playing in the same rank as me. I'm just gonna list my biggest frustrations:
There we go, that should do it. Wish you guys a nice day and good luck solo queueing!
