2023.03.22 08:44 sugarrose1141 I am attended a church that has been accused multiple times of being a cult, and it is one of the most thrilling things I've ever done

I know I'm probably going to get a lot of backlash from this, but I don't care. I want to share my experience so far and hear from others who might have experienced something similar. I am a college student in their final semester who is going through a lot in life: my dad is diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma and is slowly losing his mind, my grandmother recently passed away, my mom lost her job and is unable to find a new one (Im currently financially dependent on my parents), I've been having panic attacks several times a week and have been struggling with my overall mental health because of the workload from school and other shit in my life, Ive been off of my antidepressants for about 7 months because of financial issues and side effects and Im still not adjusting well, and I'm applying to grad school which is leading to even more stress and uncertainty. At the very beginning of this year, a girl (we'll call her E) who was in a group project with me invited the group to a church gathering and I was the only one who decided to go. Ever since then, E has invited me to go to many other things the church offers: Monday night Bible studies in a house that is packed with at least 40 people, Thursday night church service for young adults in which you're allowed to vape in the chapel, a one on one Bible study with E before the Thursday service, Friday night girl's Bible study in a house that has about 10 - 12 girls, and other things the church is offering like a vacation to the beach and other fun activities like a casino night and multicultural dinner night. After attending here for 3 months, here are some things I have noticed to be a bit off:
  1. The church offers housing for both male and female college students, and newcomers are often urged to live with them after attending the church for about a year. The houses often have 3 bedrooms but house about 6 - 8 people in them, meaning there needs to be about 2 - 3 beds in each room. Little to no privacy is provided for anyone living in these houses. There is also a chart that lists what days everyone is expected to do chores, and if you don't complete them, you will be charged more and more money the longer you put it off. It isn't clear where the money goes.
  2. During my one on one Bible studies, I seem to be put in situations where I am dumping heavy stuff about my life to E. It's often without thought, and I apologize after "ruining the mood" when I do it. I'm not sure if this is some sort of manipulation tactic or some sort of spiritual force that is making me say these things, but I normally don't open up like this to people I just recently met. It's honestly fascinating.
  3. For the entirety of my attendance, I have been bombarded with questions about myself from several different people to the point where it's overwhelming. They always try to dig deeper into my answers. The conversation normally goes: "What's your major?" "Why did you want to major in social work?" "What direction are you wanting to take your career?" "Where do you want to work?" "Are you planning on getting your masters?" "Do you have any siblings?" "Did you grow up in (insert current residing state) or somewhere else?" "Where's your hometown located?" "Did you grow up in the church?" and the questions just repeat person to person, and it's nonstop. Whenever I try to turn the conversation around onto them and ask them something about themslef they'd give a short answer then immediately ask me more about my life. This would sometimes lead me to say very personal things like the struggles I've mentioned above.
  4. I was dubbed as the "special guest" or "VIP" or something when I was over at E's house for a movie night, despite other visitors being there, and it made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
  5. E talked about a discipleship program she is in and mentioned she has had trouble with it in the past. She said she had to get a different mentor for it because the first one said she was "doing it for the wrong reasons" and that she was simply doing it for personal gain. I honestly do not believe this is true simply because just the act of doing something like this is a big step in someone's faith. Having someone shame and practically shun her for not "doing it right" is a bit off to me and could've easily been fixed with conversation and counseling which is pretty much a mentors job in the first place.
  6. The young adult sermons and bible studies have vulgur language and cursing, I've even witnessed some people cussing during prayer.
  7. The number of activities I've been attending from the church has been taking up a lot of my free time, and it has stopped me from seeing my non Christian friends. I've seen other testimonials of this.
  8. After telling E I had a bad day, E and two other girls showed up on my porch and lovebombed me. I was given a bouque of flowers, cookies, a huge box of microwaveable popcorn, a four pack of canned Malibu rum, and tissues. Tbh, I ain't complaining. I'm fine with the cycle of me getting sad and getting free stuff from them, lol.
  9. There's a woman who dubs herself as a "match maker" and says she's willing to hook me up with someone who attends the church. I went to dinner with her once, and she asked me what traits I look for in a partner, and she wouldn't let the conversation die down. Once again, she kept asking more and more questions.
  10. I've been offered alcohol at so many of these church activities and invites to E's house. Never in my life have I gotten so drunk with Christians. But I have a fairly low tolerance to alcohol so that might be why, but they rarely offer beer. It's always hard liquor and wine.
I know this may be dangerous, but I'm honestly having fun with this. Being aware that this church is a cult and analyzing everything is so thrilling to me. I will continue to update if this gets feedback.

Phish, Monday 03/22/1993 (30 years ago) Crest Theatre, Sacramento, CA, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 WinteSpring Tour
Set 1 : Chalk Dust Torture , Guelah Papyrus , Uncle Pen , Stash , Bouncing Around the Room , Rift , Weigh > Reba , Sparkle > David Bowie 1
Set 2 : Golgi Apparatus , It's Ice > The Lizards > Tela > Wilson > AC/DC Bag > Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > The Sloth > McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove
Encore : Amazing Grace 2 , Fire
1 Simpsons, Oom Pa Pa, Random Note, and All Fall Down signals in intro. 2 Without microphones.
Jamchart Notes:
Reba - Really fluid and laid-back jamming, with Trey all but absent (relatively speaking), as if inciting the others to respond. This results in an all but total dialing down of the sound. Not so much a secret language, as a testament to the band, who, via subdued and nuanced playing, manage to maintain the structure of the jam before Trey works through a series of cool rhythmic shifts and wonderful sustain to arrive at the "note."
It's Ice - Band uses the jam as a segue for a performance of the entire suite of Gamehenge songs, one of only 5 such performances. Unfinished.
Show Notes:
Trey and Mike teased Fire (Ohio Players) in Stash. The Bowie intro contained Simpsons, Oom Pa Pa, Random Note, and All Fall Down signals and Mike teasing Sailor's Hornpipe and briefly Split Open And Melt. The second set included Gamehendge narration in between songs from It's Ice through McGrupp. This was the first Gamehendge since October 13, 1991 (193 shows). Trey teased Johnny B. Goode in AC/DC Bag. Weekapaug contained a Sundown tease from Mike. Amazing Grace was performed without microphones.

Encore : Magilla , Golgi Apparatus
1 Aborted twice. 2 Vocal jam partially based on burgers. 3 Vocal jam in intro.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - Really good and unsual vocal jam in the intro, followed by a pugnacious jam with sick Mike and Trey.
Show Notes:
This show started with bad sound problems, resulting in the band aborting two attempts at a Chalk Dust Torture opener. After the first Chalk Dust failed, the band said a round of "thank yous" and Fish added "good night, we'll see you next time." Antelope contained a vocal jam in the intro and a Jean Pierre tease from Trey. YEM contained Who Knows teases. The YEM vocal jam was partially based on burgers. Before Terrapin, Fish was introduced as "the late Henrietta," and then commented that he is no longer Henrietta, but has not yet thought of a new name. He and Trey introduced Chris Kuroda (as "Cooter," with a "Charge!" tease) and Colorado fan "Erik the Viking." Terrapin included a brief Whole Lotta Love jam. Weekapaug contained a Theme from Bonanza tease by Trey.

2023.03.22 05:11 PurpleSpaceSurfer Coming out with a BANG! The Beatles' Please Please Me at 60

https://preview.redd.it/eq7p9akyt7pa1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e4f3c283f990a692d2ee625074866685cf3301a
“1… 2… 3… 4!”
With a simple, yet energetic count-in, The Beatles were on their way to leaving an indelible mark on popular culture, and it all started here. Released 60 years ago today, Please Please Me marked the first album in The Beatles’ discography. A brisk, lively pop-rock confection lasting just over half-an-hour, over a half century later it remains a stunning document of the unbridled joy of the early Beatles.

Background

The Beatles got their start as a skiffle band in the late 1950s in Liverpool. By 1961, after many personnel changes, their lineup consisted of John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass, George Harrison on lead guitar and Pete Best on drums. The group had cut their teeth playing grueling sets in Hamburg nightclubs, often times playing over 8 hours a day and taking uppers to get through the shows. Their repertoire largely consisted of cover songs, though a fledgling songwriting partnership between Lennon and McCartney contributed a few numbers here and there to the proceedings. In the fall of 1961, a rock and roll cover of “My Bonnie” with the Beatles playing backup to Tony Sheridan was released in Germany. Shortly thereafter, the Beatles met Brian Epstein, who would become their manager. He cleaned up their image and sought out a recording contract for them. A New Years Day 1962 audition for Decca Records would prove fruitless (Decca executives felt that "guitar groups are on the way out" and that "the Beatles have no future in show business"). Undeterred, Brian continued searching, eventually inking the band a deal with EMI Records in May.

The Lead-up to Please Please Me

EMI placed the group on Parlophone Records, which was run by George Martin at the time. Martin was impressed by the group’s charisma and personalities, but was doubtful of their ability to write hit songs. An initial recording session on June 6th, 1962 proved futile. Martin was especially unimpressed with the drumming ability of Pete Best. Insistent on the use of a session drummer, The Beatles used this as an opportunity to drop Best in favor of fellow Liverpudlian Ringo Starr. The next session on September 4th 1962, proved much more successful. With Ringo on the drums, the first version of “Love Me Do” was recorded (this was the version used on the 45). A week later, the band re-recorded “Love Me Do” (this was the album version) with session drummer Andy White, as well as “P.S. I Love You”, which served as the B-side to the “Love Me Do” 45.
Despite Martin’s skepticism, “Love Me Do” was a hit, peaking at #17 on the British charts by November of 1962. Convinced of the Beatles’ hitmaking ability, Martin met with the group and proposed the recording of a full album. This was an alien concept to The Beatles, since the LP market was largely driven by adults rather than teens at the time. On November 26th, The Beatles finished up the songs “Please Please Me” and “Ask Me Why” to serve as another single. Upon release on January 11th, 1963, “Please Please Me” became the Beatles’ first #1 hit on the NME and Melody Maker charts (Retroactively, the Record Retailer chart became the basis of the UK Singles Chart. Here, the song peaked at #2).
Originally, Martin wanted to record a live album of The Beatles at their resident venue, the Cavern Club. However, Martin quickly realized the acoustics of the club were insufficient for the recording of an LP. Instead, Martin came up with the idea of recording 10 additional songs to complement the 4 songs already released. Upon asking for potential album names, Paul McCartney suggested Off the Beatle Track.

The Recording of the Album

February 11th, 1963 was to be what was later referred to as “the 585 most productive minutes in the history of recorded music”. Essentially, Martin wanted the album to reflect the group’s stage show. During a gap of their first national tour, the Beatles arrived that morning with John Lennon suffering from a bad cold and attempting to rectify it with a large amount of cough drops (been there, done that).
For the morning recording session, the group started off with recording “There’s a Place” and “Seventeen” (this would later become “I Saw Her Standing There”). Rehearsing through lunch, the afternoon session produced “A Taste of Honey”, “Do You Want to Know a Secret”, and “Misery”. The evening session was produced covers of “Anna (Go to Him), “Boys”, “Chains” and “Baby It’s You”. An early version of “Hold Me Tight” was also recorded during this session, but it was not used and the song was later rerecorded for The Beatles’ sophomore album, With the Beatles.
At 10 PM, shortly before the studios were set to close for the day, the group launched into a cover of “Twist and Shout”. This was saved for last as Martin feared the song would’ve destroyed Lennon’s voice for the day. The song was nailed in one take, which prompted Martin to say, “We've been recording all day but the longer we go on the better they get." The Beatles attended a full tape playback of the album that night, and left happy with the results.
A week later, on February 20th, George Martin overdubbed piano on “Misery” and celesta on “Baby It’s You”. The Beatles were not present. Settling on the name Please Please Me (Off the Beatle Track was later used for Martin’s orchestral album of Beatles songs), the cover art was taken of the group looking down over the stairwell inside EMI’s London headquarters. This shot was later recreated in 1969 for the Get Back album, but not used when it eventually was as Let it Be in 1970. The 1969 photograph was later used for the Beatles’ “Blue Album”.

The Songs

Kicking things off with a bang is “I Saw Her Standing There”. Paul’s count-in was actually taken from Take 9 and spliced onto Take 1 of the song itself. George Martin left the count-in to simulate the effect of a live album. This song was written primarily by Paul, with John contributing a few lyrics, most notably “Well you know, what I mean.” It should be noted that on Please Please Me, the songwriting credits read McCartney-Lennon rather than the more familiar Lennon-McCartney
Next up, is “Misery”. Foreshadowing some of the Beatles’ later work, “Misery” is a portrait of self-pity. The song was actually originally composed with Helen Shapiro in mind (with whom The Beatles performed with on a national UK tour). When it was deemed unsuitable for Shapiro, Kenny Lynch, who was on the same tour, released the song as a single, making this the first Beatles song covered by another artist. Lennon later claimed he had a bit more input on this tune, was McCartney claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration.
We then make our way to the first cover song on the album Arthur Alexander’s “Anna (Go to Him)”. A personal favorite of John Lennon, his cold-stricken vocals add a tinge of pain to this song, making it a personal highlight for me. The Arthur Alexander original would later play a role in the Season 5 episode of Married… with Children, “Oldies But Young 'Uns”.
The next cover song is “Chains”. Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, this song was originally recorded by girl group The Cookies, and immediately became a popular cover song among bands in Liverpool. The Beatles version features George Harrison on lead vocals, the first time many a Beatles fan heard Harrison singing lead on a commercially released song.
The final cover song on Side One of the LP is “Boys”. Originally released by The Shirelles, “Boys” had long been known as The Beatles’ “drummer song”, with Pete Best covering it on stage prior to Ringo entering the band. Ringo also performed the song as a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes prior to joining The Beatles. Despite some pronoun changes from the Shirlles’ original, the song retains a large amount of homoerotic undertones.
“Ask Me Why”, primarily written by Lennon in the style of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, is up next. Close listening can reveal the deteriorating state of Lennon’s voice during the marathon session. “Ask Me Why” was also included as the B-side to “Please Please Me”.
Rounding out the first side of the LP is “Please Please Me”. Originally conceived by John Lennon as a slow bluesy song in the style of Roy Orbison, it took much convincing and rerecording for Martin to release the song as a single. Martin originally felt the song was “dreary” and too slow. Martin wanted to release “How Do You Do It?” as a single for The Beatles. However, the group stood their ground as they only wanted to release original material as singles. “How Do You Do It?” later became a number one hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers. The arrangement for “Please Please Me” was radically altered into the version we know today, and 18 takes of it were recorded before George Martin released the song as a single to major success.
Opening up Side Two of the album is “Love Me Do”. McCartney wrote the bulk of the song, with Lennon writing the bridge. The version on the album was the take with session drummer Andy White playing drums and Ringo on tambourine. The original single version with Ringo on drums was later reissued on Past Masters in 1988. “Love Me Do” was released as a single in the US in 1964 and became a #1 hit.
“P.S. I Love You”, a McCartney composition, was actually produced by Ron Richards in George Martin’s absence (though Martin retained production credit). Like the aforementioned “Love Me Do”, this song features Ringo on maracas with Andy White on drums. Richards was insistent that “P.S. I Love You” had to be the B-side, due to it sharing a name with a 1934 song co-written by Johnny Mercer (who later wrote the lyrics to “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses”).
“Baby It’s You”, another Shirelles cover (with music by the legendary Burt Bacharach), follows. This one features Lennon on lead vocals. The song had been part of the Beatles stage act since 1961, their version differing from the Shirelles’ by repeating the second verse rather than the first. Interestingly enough, a 1969 cover of the song by the band Smith became the highest charting version of the song in the United States (Smith’s version peaked at #5, compared to the Shirelles’ version peaking at #8).
“Do You Want to Know a Secret”, an original song with Harrison on lead vocals is next. Lennon claimed the song as entirely his own, while McCartney later claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration explicitly for George to sing. Lennon was inspired by “I’m Wishing” from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which his mother Julia sang for him as a child. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and becoming the highest charting Beatles song with a Harrison vocal until “Something” topped the charts in 1969.
McCartney’s cover of the pop standard “A Taste of Honey” follows. This song was originally an instrumental track written for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play A Taste of Honey (which was later adapted to film in 1961). The first vocal version of the song appeared in 1961 by Billy Dee Williams (Yes, Lando from Star Wars. He appeared in the original Broadway production of the play). Lenny Welch’s 1962 rendition of the song proved to be a big hit, as well as the basis of the Beatles’ version. Lennon allegedly hated the song, going as far to sing “A Waste of Money” for the backing vocals in concert.
The final original song on the album is “There’s a Place”. While Lennon claimed to write the song himself in the Motown style, McCartney claimed the song to be a collaborative effort. He noted the song’s title phrase originated from “Somewhere” from the soundtrack album to West Side Story, as he owned a copy of the album. Regardless, the song has been praised for its introspective lyrics and depth not commonly found in contemporaneous pop songs.
The grand finale, and arguably the most famous of all the Beatles’ covers, is their raucous, electric take on the Isley Brothers’ rendition of “Twist and Shout”. As previously mentioned, Lennon used every last bit of his voice that day shredding through the song. He initially felt ashamed of the performance, feeling his performance was subpar. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 behind the band’s own “Can’t Buy Me Love”. It was the only million selling Beatles single to be a cover song, and was famously used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986.

Release and Impact

The album was released on March 22, 1963. The album had reached the top of the UK charts by May of 1963 and remained there for 30 weeks until being replaced by the group’s second album, With the Beatles. Please Please Me was also the first non-soundtrack album to spend more than a year consecutively within the top 10 of the UK album charts (with 62 consecutive weeks in the Top 10). This was also a record for a debut album until April 2013 when Emeli Sande’s Our Version of Events achieved a 63rd consecutive week in the Top Ten. Please Please Me’s success was unprecedented for a pop album, as the UK charts at the time largely consisted of film soundtracks and easily listening albums. The success of the album has been attributed to the packaging, particularly it’s cover art and linear notes.
Capitol Records, the American subsidiary of EMI, passed on the opportunity to release the Beatles’ material, feeling the music would have limited appeal to American listeners. Instead, Vee-Jay records attempted to bring The Beatles to America. However, the first two American singles (“Please Please Me” and “From Me to You”), failed spectacularly. Vee-Jay lost interest in The Beatles, not releasing a truncated 12-track version of the album until Beatlemania hit in early 1964 as Introducing… The Beatles (more information on that release can be found here). Capitol included “I Saw Her Standing There” on their first Beatles album Meet The Beatles! (It also served as the B-side to the American version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”) After Vee-Jay’s license to release Beatles material expired, Capitol released The Early Beatles in March 1965, which consisted of 11 out of the 14 tracks from Please Please Me (along with “I Saw Her Standing There”, it excised “Misery” and “There’s a Place”. The latter two songs were released for the first time by Capitol in 1980 on the Rarities album). The first official American release of Please Please Me occurred in 1987 with the standardization of The Beatles’ catalog on CD.
In the decades since it’s release, Please Please Me remains highly regarded as not only one of the best debut albums of all time, but one of the greatest albums of all time period. In 2012, it was voted 39th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. NME, Rolling Stone and Uncut have all named it one of the best debut albums of all time. For the 50th anniversary of the album in 2013, modern artists celebrated the album by re-recording it in one day. Stereophonics recorded the cover of “I Saw Her Standing There”. The rerecorded album was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

Discussion

  1. What is your favorite original song on Please Please Me? Favorite cover?
  2. How would you rank the album within the Beatles’ discography?
  3. Much has been said about how joyous the album feels. Do you feel it captured the energy of The Beatles’ early performances well?
  4. How does this album compare with other pop albums from the same time?

2023.03.22 04:59 samuraistalin Wondering what instrument I should try next?

I've been a casual uke player for years, but it's an instrument that is very very easy to learn, difficult to master, and is not very versatile at all. I'm considering picking up another instrument and was wondering if I should try...
A) Guitar B) Mandolin C) Banjo
I'm leaning more towards the Banjo because my mom is offering me her old five-string for free and I enjoy picking out chords on the uke.
What do you guys think?

Fed Meeting, Banking Turmoil, Inflation and Recession

Full Abstract
  1. economic recessions involving banking crises

(1) are typically longer and more severe than recessions in which the banking system is not severely impaired

(2) The length and severity require a higher risk premium to compensate than a mild and brief recession.

(3) Two consecutive banking crises in the same country (i.e., two in about 20 years) are so rare that such an outcome would stigmatize public policy and therefore escalate regulatory efforts.

  1. The banking sector is facing a big test but not a crisis

The current macroeconomic backdrop lacks a key element (rapid private sector debt accumulation) and includes another important element that allows us to judge that there is no banking system crisis (duration risk rather than credit risk). Therefore, it is difficult to define that we are now experiencing a global banking crisis. For those who predict that the next recession will be a mild and short one, this is good news, because then the risk premium required for global risk markets (targeting PE ratios, retracements or credit spreads) only needs to be in line with the recession average, rather than the more extreme extremes.

  1. Tighter regulation of the banking system is inevitable

However, tighter regulation at the policy level to correct mismanaged banks will outweigh the effect of interest rate hikes on capital markets. Therefore, even if the central bank suspends interest rate hikes in the coming months, it will trigger a recession by the end of 2023/early 2024 (web link).

  1. Interest rate hikes and financial stability can kill two birds with one stone

The conflict between price stability and financial stability objectives should be manageable by using the central bank's policy rate to target inflation; and at the same time - using the size and structure of its balance sheet - as a macroprudential policy tool to help banks and financial system to achieve stability reinforcement. The UK had used highly precise asset purchases to ride out the crisis last year, along with the decision to raise the policy rate by 75 basis points from 2.25% to 3%, with subsequent 50 basis point rate hikes implemented on December 15 and February 2, respectively.

Banking crisis and economic recession
According to some Google indexed value indicators (as shown in the chart), the topic of banking crisis has never received as much attention as it has since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, even though many indicators of financial market stress (e.g. stock retracements, volatility of stocks, currencies and commodities) are far from recession or financial crisis levels. Only interest rate volatility has reached the level of the Lyman Brothers.

When there is such a disconnect between market sentiment and market risk premiums, it is worthwhile to explore the characteristics of a banking crisis. If these characteristics are currently present, the risk premium must rise to align with sentiment. If these characteristics are not present, sentiment will eventually normalize to align with a modest risk premium. I refer to the International Monetary Fund's Systemic Banking Crisis Revisited in 2018 and the Bank for International Settlements' Boom and Banking Crisis in 2016 to determine which events in the financial sector should be called banking crises so that they can be used to determine the risk premium required for diversified risk assets. The IMF study defines a banking crisis as an event that meets the following two criteria.

(1) triggering severe losses, such as a bank run, a surge in non-performing loans, or a bank failure.

(2) triggering major policy interventions, such as deposit freezes, bank nationalizations, extensive liquidity support, public sector capital injections, public sector guarantees, and asset purchases. Characteristics of Banking Crises Based on this definition, the IMF has identified about 150 systemic crises since the 1970s, including both developed and emerging market economies.

The experience of these 150 empirical studies shows that.

(1) frequent banking crises in the same country are rare. Since 1970, only three countries have experienced three or more such events (Argentina, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ukraine). The United States has experienced two events (the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and the global financial crisis of 2007-09); eurozone members, the United Kingdom and Japan have had only one (the exact date varies by country); and Canada and Australia have had no banking crises. For me, the lack of crisis re-occurrence is attributable to the typical crisis policy response of limiting the ability to re-leverage in the future by regulating the offending sector.

(2) When a banking crisis occurs, it is rarely just a country-specific event. For me, the contagion is either due to cross-border economic and financial linkages or a common crime committed in one area (e.g. the overleveraging of US, UK and European banks prior to the GFC)
https://preview.redd.it/8s5cyf7dk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=893869382e3247e234cf76832b0e75533fe8b37c
(3) Banking crises are usually associated with currency and sovereign debt crises. These linkages are intuitive given that banking crises require a fiscal response, that credit risk in sovereigns weakens the asset base of banks holding government bonds, and that economic crises drive capital flows to reserve currencies. the 2010-2012 eurozone crisis is a case study of these double and triple crises.

(4) Banking crises often follow credit-intensive booms. The risks associated with unusually rapid credit creation arise not only from the quantity of debt that needs to be rolled over when an economy hits a shock, but also from the quality of those debts. The latter problem arises because rapid debt accumulation is usually associated with lower lending standards, so that the population with the least financing flexibility suffers the greatest accumulation of vulnerability.

(5) Recessions associated with banking crises are usually deeper and more protracted than those in which the banking sector does not exhibit extreme stress. This result is driven by the need for the banking sector to regain profitability before it can resume its traditional role as an intermediary between households and firms. For example, the 2001 U.S. recession occurred with little significant stress on the banking sector (NPLs rose from about 1% to 1.5%), and it took only a year to return to pre-recession GDP growth trends. During the GFC, NPLs rose from 1% to 5%, and it took about four years to return to the pre-recession growth trend.

Of the five characteristics discussed above, I believe that - the presence of the pre-crisis credit boom - is the most important because it is the only one we can observe in advance. The other four features (re-occurrence within the same country, cross-country contagion, simultaneous currency and sovereign debt crises, and longer and deeper recessions) are either consequences of the crisis or simultaneous events rather than prerequisites for transforming macroeconomic shocks into systemic events.

A striking feature of the current macroeconomic backdrop is the deleveraging of the U.S. household sector over the past decade and the moderate increase in corporate leverage over the same period (ignoring some of the consequences due to the collapse of the GDP denominator). These two trends stand in stark contrast to the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and the dual accumulation of household and corporate debt during the global financial crisis of 2007-09, as shown in the chart (shaded bars indicate the U.S. recession).

Such leverage trends are not only seen in the US. Also in addition to the volatility associated with COVID, private sector credit (households and businesses) as a share of GDP has remained stable in the Eurozone countries and the UK, in contrast to the previous banking crises in these countries, as shown in the chart.
https://preview.redd.it/jr8cyprjk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=670fbb31a8dc6271dc98216d3069d3a93081d69a
The world's major private sector credit boom of the past decade occurred in our own country, China, but the financial turmoil is already reflected in our stock market and real estate credit problems in 2022:
https://preview.redd.it/9ryz417mk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=566bd3536575312cbf9c472b898035630aeba283
Previous industry research on the link between leverage, banking crises and post-crisis harm has focused on credit risk and so has ignored the most salient risk feature of the current U.S. and global banking industry today, namely duration risk. Unlike the credit/default risk of bank assets (their loan portfolios or securities holdings) that relate to banking stability, it is the duration risk (valuation changes due to rising interest rates) that simply triggers anxiety and sentiment. Impaired assets are always an issue for banks, but there is a material difference between assets affected by credit risk and those affected by duration risk. The difference is that one is cyclical (asset values fall further as the economy deteriorates) while the other is counter-cyclical (asset values rise as the economy deteriorates as central banks pause or ease policy).

While the market believes that the Fed is likely to pause rate hikes, the duration risk implies structural changes in the operating models of banks in certain regions, as well as recapitalization and consolidation. But federal policy support for the asset side of these institutions' balance sheets is more important than directly addressing credit quality through monetary policy.

Reversing credit weakness requires a recovering business cycle, which can only occur later in the federal monetary policy easing cycle, or directly by the U.S. government through fiscal easing. But sadly, neither is likely to be a potential policy option for 2023.

Even though the headlines in both the U.S. and European banking sectors look ominous, this is not some banking crisis we are experiencing right now. Having a proper, objective and dispassionate understanding helps us determine the size of the coming recession and the size and scope of the risk premium required in such an economic environment.

Financial Stability and Monetary Tightening
When a market liquidity and/or funding liquidity crisis occurs at a moment when inflation is above target, a tension between the central bank's objectives - price stability and financial stability - is inevitable. In this case, while financial stability must come first, as it is a prerequisite for the effective pursuit of price stability.

This does not mean, however, that central banks should stop or suspend their anti-inflationary policies when threatened by a banking crisis or similar systemic stability risks. The conflict between price stability and financial stability objectives should be manageable by using the central bank's policy rate to target inflation; and at the same time - using the size and structure of its balance sheet - as a macroprudential policy tool to help banks and financial system to achieve stability reinforcement. Reliable communication is essential to achieve both objectives simultaneously

https://preview.redd.it/zd05hshpk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec0dec005484d4b7af06411b12390e7e9fb6c6b9
Will the SVB collapse (and subsequent turmoil in the banking sector) be the catalyst to reverse the Fed's tightening cycle? The market seems to be saying "yes" as it is forcing this week's hike to be priced in at +25 bps, with the assumption that a significant cycle of rate cuts will follow.

However, a 50 basis point increase in risk-free short-term nominal rates would not have a material or significant impact on the stability of the financial and banking systems of any of the large developed advanced economies. The stability of the financial system is affected by interconnected liquidity and credit risk premiums, and the disappearance of potential purchasers and lenders in illiquid financial markets. The Bank of England mastered this trick and succeeded in temporarily purchasing long-term UK government bonds during a period of monetary policy tightening brought about by the incoherent policies of then Prime Minister Liz Truss, and postponed quantitative tightening and stabilized the financial system through asset purchase facility gilt sales. The asset purchases, which lasted from September 28 to October 14, were designed to address dysfunction in the long-term UK government bond market. At the first Commonwealth Monetary Policy Committee meeting following the asset purchases, the Bank of England demonstrated its continued commitment to its firm goal of fighting inflation by raising the policy rate 75 basis points from 2.25% to 3%. Subsequent 50 basis point rate hikes were implemented on December 15 and February 2. The prudence of the temporary asset purchases would have been more evident if they had been offset.

The ECB also raised its policy rate by 50 basis points this month, despite the financial chaos in the U.S. following the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) bankruptcy. Headline HICP (Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices) inflation in Europe was 8.5% in February, and core HICP inflation (excluding volatile energy and food prices) was 5.6%. The ECB addressed the twin issues of financial stability and inflation by stating that its "policy toolkit is well positioned to provide liquidity support to the euro area financial system when needed and to maintain a smooth transmission of tight monetary policy". In the second half of the 1940s, the Federal Reserve also combined interest rate hikes (albeit very small) with balance sheet reductions and yield curve controls

https://preview.redd.it/r3z2h7dsk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42d7a3ce5cf6ee72565f58c316366770c8d1d1e2
What will the Federal Reserve Board do at its upcoming meeting? I believe that the issue of financial stability after the collapse of SVB and Signature Bank has been effectively addressed after ensuring that all deposits in these two mismanaged institutions are intact. In effect, this means that all deposits in U.S. banks are insured from now on. No doubt this will lead to moral hazard, as incompetent or reckless bank managers will not be punished for losing familiar depositors. But this is an unavoidable price to pay for ruling out the systemic threat posed by a bank run. This is because, with the market value of many eligible debt instruments well below par, the lender of last resort has become the lender of first resort, providing what is essentially a subsidized loan of funds. The same anomaly (valuing collateral at par value) now applies to loans in the discount window.

As of the end of 2022, U.S. banks plan to hold to maturity securities with unrealized losses of approximately $620 billion. While an increase in policy rates would likely further reduce the market value of long-term securities, it would be right to continue to raise rates anyway, as the U.K. and ECB have typically done. It is difficult to quantify the duration risk hedging pressures on banks and their counterparties, but bank losses due to bad investment decisions (in an orderly market) are part of the healthy Darwinian mechanism that maintains a market economy: banks that do not hedge interest rate risk carefully have to face bankruptcy; and so does the orderly liquidation resolution of failed institutions. Both U.S. and global central banks must be prepared to fulfill their financial stability responsibilities as lender of last resort and market maker of last resort in the event of illiquidity, bank runs, or other market failures that pose a systemic threat. However, if extreme circumstances do not arise, the continued responsibility to maintain price stability should also be honored on a consistent and stable basis.

As the U.S. core personal consumption expenditure inflation rate remained at 4.7% in January, the Fed should, in theory, raise its policy rate target range by 50 basis points at its upcoming meeting. However, the market believes that the Fed may raise rates by only 25 basis points or even pause the rate hike, as the market feels that a larger rate hike would have a serious negative impact on financial stability. In the short term, the Fed stands ready to intervene as a lender and market maker of last resort, in the best interest of U.S. financial stability. In the medium to long term, the Dodd-Frank regulations for small and medium-sized banks, which were repealed in 2018, should be reimposed, and restrictions on banks' proprietary investment activities should also be reinstated

Trying to retract myself guitar. An injury has left me unable to play bar chords, likely for a VERY long time. Any tips on avoiding or substituting?

2023.03.21 23:32 mind_ablaze Help with power chord stamina?

Hey y'all. I'm actually a music teacher who teaches guitar among other instruments, so this is slightly embarrassing to admit, but I've been playing for about 7 years now (self taught) and still have trouble with power chord stamina.
This happens with every guitar I play on, no matter what the action is or the string gauge. That being said, I play primarily on a Les Paul or a Strat (basic, I know) with 10 gauge strings and relatively low/standard action settings. I've tried adjusting my strap height and everything else I can think of related to the actual instrument.
The issue can best be described as pain/exhaustion in the part of my fretting hand where my thumb meets my palm. I'm a big fan of Green Day and like to jam to a lot of their stuff, so this has always been pretty annoying for me. I've messed around with where I situate my thumb on the back of the neck and do my best to make sure I'm not pressing too hard with my thumb.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, because this issue has haunted me for all 7 years of my playing. Thanks in advance!

2023.03.21 23:29 External-Grab-8796 Am I doing well?

I’ve started playing guitar 6months ago. I mainly play electric with a little acoustic too.I got an acoustic 2-3 years ago but never started playing until 6months ago.I got an electric at Christmas and mainly play that.I was self taught until about a month ago when I started taking acoustic lessons.I know every Cowboy Chord. I can play some solos, like Bohemian Rhapsody, Intro to One and The Unforgiven.I play a lot of metal rhythm mostly metallica, Like creeping death and Enter sandman and One and Seek and destroy. I know about 5 or 10 scales.i know tab but no standard notation and I cant play by ear yet.So am I doing well for 6 months??

2023.03.21 23:22 imgoingtolearkarate Guitar Help - Tom Courtenay (Acoustic)

The acoustic rendition of Tom Courtenay is my favorite YLT song. Sweet, ironic, heartbreakingly cool. I've always wanted to play along to it, but Ira's guitar work is so rich and intricate that I always have trouble.
Any guitar heads on here who could help me crack it or point me in a helpful direction? I know the chord progression, but I can't for the life of me understand what he's doing to make the dynamics he does.

2023.03.21 21:59 _switchlatch Room Sound Proof

Hey everyone. I'm a high school student who lives with his parents and partakes in many loud activities (some of which being gaming with friends and playing instruments like drums and guitar). All of my 'noise makers' are against the wall that is beside my parents' room and I am looking for ways to insulate the noise. My goal is to eliminate the sounds of me talking at a louder volume or playing through my guitar amp at a low volume to the best of my abilities. What are the best ways I can insulate sound and prevent my own parents from filing a noise complaint on my sorry ass (not literally). Also, it's good to note that I prefer to not hang up massive noise panels as it's my bedroom and I want to make it look nice too. The cheaper the better. Thanks!

2023.03.21 21:28 thegrumpyorc Piano: More straightforward than guitar?

Hi, all.
51 years old, owner of a guitar (and a banjo) that I've tried to learn to play several times over the past 30 years, but I can never get my brain out of the way. If I were 12, I'd play a Green Day song badly until I could play it well, then I'd play a Stray Cats song badly until I could play _it_ well, then poof--10 years later I'd be Brian May and I would have internalized a lot of things that that would make theory just a process of putting names to things I already understood.
In my current situation, I'm spending a lot of time thinking about the WHY while I'm also trying to learn the how. I want to know the theory behind how things interrelate, and for some reason, the visualization of everything on the neck of the guitar, the fact that there are multiple places to play different notes and multiple shapes to play the same chord, and many of the other things that make guitar awesome (like alternate tunings) are all really distracting. It also feels like writing music on a guitar is even farther off.
On some level, the consistency and simplicity of the layout on a piano seems like it would make a lot of that easier and help quiet my brain. "This chord includes these three notes / this interval is visually this size / this is the only place to play this note / etc." And if I hap[pen to bang out a tune, it seems like it would be a whole lot easier to get that tune down on paper.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

2023.03.21 21:22 Swifttttty What do I need to learn to be able to use play chord ideas / melodies all over the neck?

Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction, I play piano and can play bar chords and chords on guitar and understand the theory but am not sure what I need to learn to be able to play chords all over / melodies and come up with my own stuff ? Do I need to learn all the different scales , as when I do scales it doesn’t seem intuitive to build chords off of them seeing as the third is often on the same string. I feel like I’m missing something obvious so would appreciate any pointers.

2023.03.21 20:50 Successful-Yak-6562 I will write you a love song about your relationship, partner, friends, ex, etc. for £5

I will write you a love song about your relationship, partner, friends, ex, etc. for £5
(M19) I play guitar and like writing songs, you can give me names, key words, funny moments, milestones, etc. It can be a funny song or emotional (I'll try my best lol) and is perfect as a gift or just because.
You can DM me with any info or stories you want in a song :)
I've made them for friends in the past and it's always funny. I can write it and give chords to you to perform on your own to serenade your loved ones or if you dont like them that much then I will sing it to them instead.
Flowers, chocolates and teddy bears are lovely but this is something for the person that always goes the extra mile to get the best gifts!
Tl;dr £5 for custom song
