How do I tell my dad that his boss makes me feel uncomfortable and gives off bad vibes… [F25] [M60s..?]

2023.03.21 17:32 Heyhiimmegan How do I tell my dad that his boss makes me feel uncomfortable and gives off bad vibes… [F25] [M60s..?]

Hi! My dads boss seems to be extremely well off. He owns one pub and seems to always be doing up some kind of building in our town. My dad basically worships the ground he walks on. My dad has a relatively comfortable life because of him! So for that I am grateful.
But he is always. There. Family meals? He’s there. Christmas dinner? There again. The only thing the man talks about is himself. And if the conversation doesn’t revolve around him he walks away or tries to start it again about himself. Says he has celebrities like lady gaga in his phonebook. Says he is a music producer and is a celebrity in other countries from his YouTube. He has 2 thousand subscribers on YouTube… he once cornered me and begged me to watch his singing videos and like every single one of them and wouldn’t take no for an answer. When I said I would watch when I got home he said he didn’t believe me… it was so uncomfortable.
He goes to the Philippines for months at a time for what he calls a medical treatment that is illegal in the uk! He now says he is living with a women and her family he has met over there. He says he is there to help children with accommodation who live on the streets. He has absolutely no personal social media!
My dad has no idea where he has acquired all his money from and where it keeps coming from? He treats my dad and my step mother to 5* all inclusive holidays-that he joins in on. He’s incredibly Pervy with women. I’ve spoken to about 5 people who said they would not feel comfortable being alone with him in a room. Last week he cornered me in a public restaurant saying he has watched me grow into an absolutely gorgeous women and that I used to look strange a few years ago (I used to have a shaved head) and now he likes how fresh I look.. fresh?! He repeated the same thing about 3 times, continued to say my bf was completely pulling to be with me.
When I left the restaurant he asks may I have a hug. I say sure and he nuzzled his face in my neck. Says, god you smell good and then pulled me in even further, pushed his nose into my neck and gives me a very loud sniff. I laughed and pushed him off and walked away. Am I overthinking this and just ignore it? This man just seems to think he is some kind of Saint and a god. It’s story after story. There is something so off about him.. but my dad is not a spring chicken anymore and has a good job for his age. I don’t think he would find another job now that suits him best. My dad is gullible and Is easily led… I think I just wanted to rant more than anything! I’m sure my dad can handle himself! Just seems very strange…

2023.03.21 17:29 Dracosia Deserted in the shadows, part 5 (NOP fanfic)

Memory transcription subject: Michael Smith, Human extermination officer
Date [standardized human time]: Oktober 29, 2136
We entered the darkness and shadows fell over us. Ortsa quickly informed us that the temperature in the shadows was another five degrees colder than it had already been, and that the remaining light would soon be below the level visible to human eyes and shortly after even the Yotul wouldn’t be able to see anymore. This was something I actually had not thought about, but now I needed to ask:
“Hey Ortsa, how exactly are you supposed to drive if you can’t see? And how can we study anything if our only light is starlight? Does this truck not have lights?“
Ortsa laughed.
“Oh dear, of course it does. But we can’t use those, because they would disturb the local fauna. We also have night vision goggles, but later on there will be so little light they will hardly work. Instead, we have THIS!“
Ortsa grinned dramatically, stopped the truck and pressed a button. The bulletproof windows made a weird sound and suddenly the outside was clearly visible, although completely black and blue.
“Wait, what? How does this work?“
Some of the scientists and the other two extermination officers looked around at the windows, trying to understand, while Doctor David Schneider grinned proudly and Ortsa - equally proud - elaborated:
“You remember those flashlight looking thingies on top of the truck you saw when entering?“
Now that she mentioned it, I did remember them. They were extendable, in all directions pointable… things, that kinda reminded me of flashlights, just like Ortsa said, but really big and at the end of multi jointed metal rods, so they could reach more places. I had assumed they were energy weapons of some sort, but okay. The other passengers nodded and observed the conversation with great curiosity.
“Yeah. What do they do?“
“They can produce visible light too, but right now they are producing a single, very specific wavelength of ultra violet light, that most lifeforms we know are not sensitive to. Thus it shouldn’t disturb the local ecosystem. And the ‘glass‘ you are looking through is actually laced with a thin material that absorps this specific wavelength and then reemits them at a different wavelength, a specific shade of blue that is within our visible spectrum. Thus we get a black and blue image of the outside world. Doctor Schneider came up with it and I build it.“
Doctor Schneider churned in:
“This is not the only measure we took. Ortsa also made the engine almost perfectly silent and we are rolling on sound dampening tires and with multiple vibration softeners, so our Truck makes almost no sound and causes very little disturbance.“
“And“ ,the Venlil fauna expert Lim added “all our fumes are made almost completely odorless. On top of all that we will a keep the truck at least five hundred feet away from the river at all times, so we don’t disturb the nature. This way we can illuminate and observe anything, but most creatures should not even notice our Truck. We hope so, at least.”
Mirva, who still struggled with the situation but did her best not to look scared, asked:
“Wait, if we are five hundred feet away, how do we take samples?“
Doctor Schneider looked at her with empathy in his eyes.
“I am sorry, Mirva. But I am afraid we will have to leave the vehicle for that.”
Mirva shot up from her seat, her eyes wide open and filled with terror.
“No, not out THERE! I won’t go there! Go without me!“
She fell back a couple steps, as trying to get further away from the door. Fuck, I needed to calm her.
“Hey, Mirva, it is okay”, I calmly and carefully said , making sure to speak as quiet and soft as I could without beeing impossible to understand.
She looked at me with fear, but she did listen. Probably because this wasn’t the first time I calmed her down.
“Focus on me, on my words, okay Mirva? Now calmly breathe in and breathe out. Everything is okay. You are in an armored truck surrounded by friends and bodyguards and no one will hurt you, yeah? Not as long as I am here, okay?“
Mirva was still freaking out, but she was breathing more calmly now and, following my gestures, leaned in for a hug. I was really happy that the exterminator suit covered my face, otherwise this would not have worked. I hugged her and held her and just waited for her to collect herself. While waiting I was looking around through the windows to try and find anything near the river that would help distract her. I was very happy to see a flower - Mirva loved flowers. And she loved talking about them.
“Hey Mirva? Do you see that flower there? What is that? Would you mind explaining it to us?“
Mirva left my hug, looked around and immediately her face glew up.
“Oh my god, that is a night daisy! Their cousins grow near the dark side of Venlil Prime and are a rare delicacy because they need centuries to grow to a ripe age. It had been theorized that some of them would grow even here, but to actually see one, that’s amazing!“
Doctor Jonson, the human expert on xeno flora, if I recalled correctly, also stared at the flower like it was the best thing ever.
“I read about these. They contain insane amounts of fructose in their roots as storage for not just bad years, but bad decades. And despite their small size their body is almost entirely wooden, except for the big leaves that allow it to collect the tiniest amounts of light and are shockingly cold resistant. This is one of the most extremophile plants in the galaxy!“
My boss Vartek and I shot each other am amused glance. The flower girls freaking out about some random plant was just way too cute.
“Say, would it be a good idea to take some samples, Mirva? You know, for science?“
And Mirva, the same Venlil who had just freaked out at the very idea of going outside suddenly grabbed a syringe, and made her way to the door.
“Of course, that is a great idea, Mike. Come on Doctor Jonson, we have to go!”
Ortsa heard their intention and - pressing yet another button - opened the door. Doctor Jones quickly put on a coat and grabbed night vision goggles for her and Mirva, who had already run out. Luckily her fur meant she didn’t need a coat. And the temperature wasn’t quite freezing yet, so that was a plus. Farlent and I immediately put on goggles as well and followed the two, flamethrowers at the ready. If anything tried to eat our friends, it was about to have one hell of a time.
But for now everything was calm and quite. The river ran quietly, some fish swam in it, but no predators and no monsters lurked for us. The Truck looked as absurd from the outside as from the inside, like some cyborg dragon beetle transformer or something… it was pretty hard to describe. But now that I knew some of it’s functions I appreciated it a whole lot more.
It was our all in one food storage, fortress, home, vehicle, computer, communications array, data storage and light source… and once I was back I was gonna call it Bob. It was the ONLY appropriate name, I chuckled to myself.
Meanwhile, Mirva and Doctor Jonson started taking small samples from the plants. Lim had also walked out to take images of the fishes and keep track of their behavior, but didn’t seem to discover anything surprising.
Farlent was busy triple checking our surroundings for threats, luckily she found nothing.
I noticed Jonson shivering as she talked to Mirva and once again I was happy to wear my suit. It’s thermal isolation wasn’t perfect, but it worked better than any human made clothing ever could. I would have to make sure the human scientists dressed properly next time, their safety was my responsibility after all.
Under my watchful eye Lim returned to the truck to discuss his findings and the further strategy with the other scientists, while I walked back to Doctor Jonson and Mirva who - thank god - looked a lot happier than before, as she marveled at the flower and went over the dozens of tiny differences to it’s better known cousins in the inhabited areas. Jonson was busy typing dozens of datapoints into her notepad.
“Hey, Mirva? I got a question.“
Yeah, Mike? What do you want to know?“
„How exactly does a plant… you know… grow without sunlight? I mean, don’t they need that?“
Jonson and Mirva exchanged a quick look, before Mirva explained:
“Okay, first of all this is not really a plant, it is closer to a Terran tree than anything else. And secondly, if you want to look at its leaves in the Truck later you will notice that they are very big, folded in a way that maximizes their surface and of a very dark green, mostly due to a high level of chlorophyll. They are masters at collecting even the tiniest amount of the light that still reaches them here and they use every last bit of it. Their longevity is actually a big part of that strategy - they use most of their energy to merely stay alive and only have very little spare to grow, so instead they just grow extremely slowly. And the beautiful thing is that they can live this long, not in spite but BECAUSE of the lack of sunlight. You see, the lack of sunlight means a very low level of cosmic radiation, so their cells don’t get destroyed over time that much. Combine that with drastically less competition and almost no animals trying to eat them and you get the perfect conditions for a long life. Thus they can live for centuries. This also gives them the opportunity to grow a body out of wood, unlike grasses and flowers that need to grow much faster and don’t have the time for that.“
Mirva waved her tail around excitedly like little children sometimes did, and Doctor Jonson finished her explanation.
“All of this makes them one of the only plants that grow here and thus they are the perfect basis of the food chain. Understanding them is vital to understanding this ecosystem. And their excistence in the twilight zone means that the ecosystem there must have been at least somewhat similar to the ecosystem on the dark side, which is promising.”
I smiled, happy that we were making progress this quickly, even though I was pretty certain they had drastically simplified their points so I could understand them. But hey, at le-
“Predator nearby! Retreat to the Truck!“
Farlent’s shout made me jump up and I quickly opened the safety of my flamethrower. Mirva suddenly looked like she was about to freak out again and Jonson didn’t look much better, but she was focused enough to grab Mirva by the arm and run with her back to the truck, while I checked the direction Farlent was pointing towards .
And indeed, I saw not one, but two pairs of glowing eyes - frontfacing eyes- staring at me from right below the waters surface. I did however not see a body belonging to those eyes, which was weird. But I wasn’t stupid enough to hang around and find out how deadly those things were the hard way.
Checking all directions and keeping my flamethrower pointed at the eyes the entire way, I slowly retreated to the truck, waited for Farlent to jump in and then gave Ortsa the sign to slam the door shut. She did - and now we waited for the predators next move.

Which Players Should Liverpool Sign? A (Hopefully) Comprehensive Look at Liverpool's (Belated) Rebuild
With Liverpool's season effectively over at the Bernabeu, many have turned their attention towards the upcoming rebuild instead of our final push in the contention for the CL spot. Journalists, Klopp, and even the players themselves have referenced over and over again the necessity of new signings with departures rumoured if not confirmed. The signs are there for a summer overhaul of the squad; this rebuild will in all likelihood be Klopp's final attempt at building a title-challenging Liverpool.
Through writing this, I hope that I can illustrate what our rebuild should entail, what kind of players Liverpool should sign in the upcoming transfer window and several candidates that should fit this assessment. For the sake of brevity, I won't be as detailed with the stats as my Mane post, more so due to the scale of a rebuild in comparison with replacing a single player. Also, bear in mind that personally, I see most of the candidates listed here as unrealistic signings. Even if unrealistic, these players should at least paint a picture of the kind of players we should be looking at in the summer.
Having said that, let's take a look at Liverpool's current line-up and assess where we can strengthen the ageing and declining squad.

1. Assessing Liverpool’s Decline

1.1. The Academy

Let’s start with what I consider to be the club’s most important infrastructure: the academy. Our youth intake can now boast another future starter in their most recent graduate: Stefan Bajcetic; a proud moment for the academy, and a tragic one for our midfield. Aside from Bajcetic, plenty of soon-to-be academy graduates are also shaping up their game with Conor Bradley, Leighton Clarkson, Sepp van den Berg, and Tyler Morton all playing a role in their respective loans.
Stefan Bajcetic, Sepp van den Berg, Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley, and Leighton Clarkson
The current academy squad is also no slouch, with Ben Doak and Kaide Gordon leading the way well beyond their age peers. Amongst the current crop of our young talents, I also suggest taking notes on Bobby Clark, Isaac Mabaya, Luke Chambers, Melkamu Frauendorf, Oakley Cannonier, and Trent Kone-Doherty. These are talented youngsters that in all likelihood will feature in the early stages of our annual youth-driven Carabao campaign, and might be sitting on the bench should an injury crisis emerge.
All in all, a pretty healthy youth setup full of promising youngsters with room to grow.

1.2. Goalkeepers

Next are our number 1s: Alisson, Kelleher, and Adrian. With that line-up of goalkeepers, right now goalkeeping is the least of Liverpool’s worries. Alisson this season has been one of if not outright the best goalkeeper in the world, with 29 goals conceded out of a post-shot expected goal (PSxG) of 37.2. Outperforming one's PSxG can be explained by either luck or skill, and personally, I do think the latter is a more plausible explanation than the former for Ali. Other websites would illustrate this point through terms such as PSxG-GA or "goals prevented"; in Ali's case, he would have a top 5 league-leading "goals prevented" of 8.2.
Kelleher and Adrian are solid backups and unfortunately, that solidity is one reason why Liverpool should be looking at signing a backup goalkeeper. Kelleher should now have plenty of suitors seeking his services after his cup heroics. With his game time limited by the best keeper in the world, he should now be looking at other clubs as the next step in his career. While Adrian remains a solid 3rd option, his recent cameos leave much to be desired as our first backup. Of course, Harvey Davies from the academy could step up to the occasion as his predecessors had risen for the backup spot: Kelleher and Ward. A safer option though is signing a deputy goalkeeper in the case of Kelleher’s departure.

1.3. Defenders

Unlike our excellent goalkeeping situation, the players forming our backline seems to have declined significantly in terms of performance. From a title-challenging backline to conceding 3 more goals in 12 fewer games, the regression of our defence is far too steep to be justified by the midfield’s mediocrity alone. Similarly, placing our woes solely on the backline would mean missing the bigger context of what went wrong with Liverpool’s defence.
Surprisingly, certain players are actually outputting more numbers in their defensive stats this season. This can indicate either an improvement in defensive abilities or failure of defensive duties from the midfield; both are valid interpretations of the data available. Looking at the data within this context, 4 data points jump out as highlights of our declining back-line: Aerial duels along with challenges lost for Gomez, Matip, and Virgil, and carries into the final third along with dispossession for Robertson and Trent.
Long gone are the days of Matip and Virgil clattering every striker competing for long balls. In aerial duels, both are shadows of themselves compared to their title-winning season. As for challenges lost, Gomez and Matip’s erratic charts can be explained by their injury woes; what is far more concerning in my opinion is Virgil’s steady decline since 2021. What started out as scouting a replacement for Matip might end up as the search for Virgil’s successor.

As for Robertson and Trent, two trends are observable in their charts. The first is that our fullbacks are no longer playing as two pseudo-wingers terrorizing the opposing backline. Trent in particular seemed to have adopted a far more conservative approach in progressing the ball and occupying a deeper space behind Salah. One could argue that Henderson’s decline and a growing reluctance to cover for Trent led to this transition, but another thing to note is that the same trend can be observed with Robertson this year. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that currently, our fullbacks are being held back by a lack of adequate defensive cover in the midfield.
A comparison of Robertson and Trent's carries into final third and dispossessed in the Premier League in the last 4 years, courtesy of FBRef.com
The second observable trend is that our fullbacks are also losing the ball far more often than they had done in our title-winning year. Although that might sound obvious as a result of their predisposition to overlap and deliver dangerous crosses, keep in mind that our fullbacks are becoming more conservative over the years. This means that when they do lose possession, they more often than not lose it in areas closer to our goal than ever before. The lack of defensive midfielders covering for them along with our high defensive line exacerbates this conundrum of frequently conceding possession in dangerous areas.
Within this context, it comes as no surprise that Ramsay lacks Klopp’s trust whilst Milner seems to be playing more often as the deputy right back. Placing the teenager whilst opposing clubs are actively targeting his side of the pitch would be a literal baptism by fire. Milner on the other hand has the experience to stop the opposing team’s quick transition in these areas through a combination of gamesmanship and tactical fouling.
Speaking of deputies, Tsimikas’s excellent showing in cameos should now interest other clubs seeking services. Unfortunately, we now face the same situation as Kelleher with a backup option too good to happily accept a bench role. The sensible thing to do now would be to sell him off at his highest value and sign a backup left back with the potential to Robertson’s place.
All in all, a noticeable drop off in comparison to 2019/2020 for all defenders involved, and unfortunately a steep decline from Matip whose departure might be the best course of action for all parties involved. Should Virgil continue to regress further along the season, signing a successor needs to be a priority in the summer transfer window. In addition, Klopp needs to either trust Ramsay in Trent’s role or sign a new deputy right back alongside a possible replacement for Tsimikas in the summer window.

1.4. Midfielders

Anyone blessed with the gift of sight can clearly see our midfield as the biggest culprit of Liverpool’s recent misery. More specifically, the two stalwarts of Liverpool’s midfield three, Fabinho and Henderson, seem to have fallen off a cliff form-wise. Injuries to Keita, Ox, Thiago and even loanee Arthur make matters worse as Liverpool struggle to field a reliable midfield.
Taking a look at the defensive stats of our number 6s we can clearly see a decline in every facet of their defensive contributions
A comparison of Fabinho and Henderson's aerials won and dribblers tackled in the Premier League in the last 4 years, courtesy of FBRef.com
Aerial duels, ground duels, interceptions; every stat line serve as a testament to the decline we’re seeing in every match of the season. If the charts didn’t convince you that we needed an entire midfield overhaul in the summer, nothing probably could. Signing a replacement for the defensive midfielder role should be the number one priority for the next transfer window, and it probably would be if we didn’t have a circus at our number 8 positions.
A comparison of Fabinho and Henderson's interceptions and tackles in the Premier League in the last 4 years, courtesy of FBRef.com
For our box-to-box midfielders, we have Elliott and Jones who couldn’t contribute much defensively, Keita and Ox leaving in the summer, along with injuries to Arthur and Thiago. This perfect concoction of a shitshow we’re currently facing means that 18 years old Bajcetic and 37 years old Milner are somehow competing as Liverpool’s best midfielder this season; something has clearly gone terribly wrong. Reinforcements for the midfield, especially box-to-box midfielders, are paramount to the success of Liverpool’s final season with Klopp.

1.5. Forwards

Last but not least is our frontline. Thankfully, we’ve already begun the process of rebuilding our declining front line with Mane’s transfer to Bayern and Firmino set to depart at the end of the season. What we’re left with is a still very productive Salah alongside Diaz, Jota, Gakpo, and Nunez as our next generation of forwards. Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are also available as depth options, and hopefully with enough experience, as competitors for the starting spot.
The only conceivable gap in our front line seemingly stems from rumours of clubs interested in acquiring Jota’s services. Even if he had lost his starting place recently, selling Jota means that Liverpool will lose a talented forward that can cover multiple areas of the pitch. Should Jota prefer to play elsewhere with a guaranteed starting spot, Liverpool should replace him with a forward that can similarly provide tactical flexibility on the pitch. With Diaz, Gakpo, and Nunez more than capable of filling in Jota’s natural position, perhaps Liverpool should look at right-wingers available on the market instead.

2. Profiling the Traits of Liverpool’s Future Signings

As per our assessment, we need 2-3 starting midfielders, a centre-back, possible replacements for Jota, Kelleher, and Tsimikas should they depart, and a deputy for Trent should Ramsay fail to impress Klopp. Finding candidates for these roles should be an easy enough task, right? We can simply map out the ideal traits of a Klopp player, and seek out suitable talents that perform well statistically in each role. Thus, for each role we need someone with the following traits:
All: Comfortable in possession. GK: Accurate distribution, runs out to clear the ball. CB: Dominant in duels, high-volume ball progression and defensive contribution. FB: Excellent crossing, high-volume ball progression and chance creation. DM: Dominant in duels, high-volume ball progression and defensive contribution. CM: High-volume ball progression, chance creation, and defensive contribution. RW: High volume ball progression and chance creation.
Of course, these traits will filter well-performing players in the scope of their statistically observed performances. Aside from these attributes, we also need to consider several factors outside of the boundaries of each statistic such as:

2.1. Injury Record

The first priority for our new signings is simple: no reoccurring injuries that could make them unavailable in Liverpool’s gruelling schedule. We’ve all seen the games missed chart with Liverpool at the bottom, a whole quarter ahead of 19th-placed Chelsea. Permanently signing players prone to injuries would be repeating the same mistakes of our previous campaigns.
A pristine injury record is nice to have, but should not prevent us from signing quality players with the occasional unfortunate injuries. The keyword here is “occasional”; any player with an extensive injury record should still be barred from our candidate list.

2.2. Tactical Adaptability and Liverpool’s Playstyle

Another thing to note is the difference in playstyle between the candidates’ current club and Liverpool. Klopp’s system is especially rigid in practice, making it more difficult for players in clubs with little to no similarity in their tactical setup. Only 4 players have adapted perfectly to Liverpool’s system the moment they play under Klopp: Alisson, Firmino, Salah, and Virgil; three of them are undoubtedly world-class, while the other is a literal incarnation of the system itself.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that players in terrorist-adjacent clubs should be barred entirely. Instead, players who should be more familiar with Klopp’s system are given preference over their similarly well-performing counterparts.

2.3. Preferred Traits vs. Performance-Oriented Traits

This leads us to another facet of Klopp’s system, the requirement of very specific traits in each positional roles. This can lead to identifying players who performed well in their current roles but are unsuitable for Liverpool. Conversely, this can also lead to missing out on players who could perform well in our setup but are limited to their current unsuitable role.
Let’s look at goalkeepers as an example, on one hand, we require a keeper with a good distribution that plays comfortably in a high defensive line. On the other hand, limiting our candidate pool to players with these traits can lead to missing out on excellent goalkeepers who are unable to display said trait in their club’s tactical setup.
A balanced approach then should consider this collective vs. individual facet of a player. A well-performing candidate should still be considered even if they’re playing in an unsuitable setup. The priority of course remains to seek out suitable traits in our candidates, but exceptions need to be made in the context of a candidate’s performances collectively vis-à-vis individually.

2.4. Difficulties in Acquiring Players

Last is the sale availability of the players themselves. Liverpool is a historic institution competing against Europe’s most prestigious clubs, but that doesn’t mean acquiring players is a straightforward task. The most oft-told factor is CL spots and while that may be a hindrance in signing certain players, internal club policy dictates that such candidates are eliminated early on. A bigger problem for Liverpool is actually how talented the current players are.
Think for a second that you’re an up-and-coming young player negotiating with Liverpool and other clubs. Your inner fan would obviously accept Liverpool’s offer, but existing players could ensure that your time at Anfield is spent more on the bench rather than the field. If you’re a goalkeeper, are you sure you want to sign with a club with the world’s best in your spot? Or as a right back, can you compete with the most creative player of his generation for game time?
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we should limit ourselves to academy graduates and players comfortable on the bench as our backups. Instead, a smarter look at clubs beneath our stature should guarantee more willingness for players to sign for us. For the average top 5 league starting goalkeeper, signing for Liverpool means a drastic reduction of on-field actions. For the same starting goalkeeper recently relegated? The bench at Liverpool might be a more attractive career trajectory even with limited game time.

3. Candidates

3.1. Goalkeeper

For our goalkeepers, I limited myself to clubs either well below our stature or likely to be relegated to increase the sensibility of the transfer. Although they’re playing in inferior teams, that does not necessarily translate to being bad goalkeepers themselves. One, in particular, is even leading La Liga in PSxG-GA, though unfortunately, an excellent goalkeeper can only do as much as his teammates allow him to.
Edgar Badia, Gavin Bazunu, Marco Carnesecchi, Emil Audero, and Paul Bernardoni
Edgar Badia. 31. Elche
The first candidate is unironically the worst fit for Liverpool. With a reluctance for rushing out attackers and a similar age profile to Alisson, he is nowhere near the ideal solution for the GK spot. Why is he my first choice you ask? Well, his PSxG-GA figure of 7.0 is top of the charts in La Liga and 3rd in the top 5 European leagues. Additionally, his 3 penalties saved and relatively accurate long pass completion percentage of 45.1% make him an attractive addition to the team.
Gavin Bazunu. 21. Southampton Marco Carnesecchi. 22. Atalanta, on loan at Cremonese
The next two candidates all fit the criteria with asterisks beside their names. In particular, Bazunu PSxG-GA leaves a lot to be desired while Carnesecchi's reluctance to rush out might not fit Liverpool’s high line. What both have in common however is a high ceiling for growth and the occasional moments of brilliance common in rough and unpolished goalkeeping gems. Some highlights include their respective matches against Manchester United and Bologna. Under Alisson’s tutelage (and Taffarel's to boot!), both could very well develop into worthy competition for the starting spot.
Emil Audero. 26. Sampdoria Paul Bernardoni. 25. Angers
Audero and Bernardoni are in ways very similar to Bazunu and Carnesecchi. Like Carnesecchi, Audero’s lack of defensive actions outside the penalty area may limit Liverpool’s high line. Bernardoni is also very similar to Bazunu with a below-standard PSxG-GA and excellent rushing-out numbers. Although the two are inferior in ceiling and statistics wise, both are still performing at an acceptable level for the role of Liverpool’s bench option. In addition, goalkeepers mature differently from other football positions. They might show improvements well into the years to come should they sign for Liverpool.

3.2. Centre Back

For our centre-back position, we need players who can progress the ball as well as Matip without sacrificing any sense of defensive acumen and solidity. As mentioned previously, dominance in aerial duels would be a huge bonus for our candidates due to Virgil’s slight decline and Matip’s fallen form in these stats.
Kim Min-Jae, Edson Alvarez, Ko Itakura, Goncalo Inacio, and Kevin Danso
Kim Min-Jae. 26. Napoli
The monster himself needs no introduction. Helming the defence of the Scudetto’s leading contender, the former Fenerbahce defender established himself amongst Europe’s greatest centre-backs after a successful debut season for Napoli. His presence in this list is for one sole reason: the reports of a vastly undervalued release clause in his Napoli contract. Even if his actual fee were to be higher than reported, Liverpool should do everything in its power to recruit what could very well be Virgil’s replacement when the opportunity presents itself.
Edson Alvarez. 25. Ajax Ko Itakura. 26. Monchengladbach
Edson Alvarez and Ko Itakura are amongst the best ball-playing centre-backs playing right now. What they lack in traditional defensive stats such as clearances and interceptions they more than make up for in other areas more related to Liverpool’s possession-heavy setup. With 88.1% and 91.3% pass completion rates and averaging 78.2 and 72.62 passes attempted per 90, they can without a doubt replicate Matip’s excellent ball distribution.
The similarities to Matip don’t end there. Averaging 1.75 and 1.1 progressive carries per 90 alongside 0.7 and 0.41 successful take-ons per 90, Alvarez and Itakura are more than capable of executing Matip’s signature run. In addition, both of them excel at different areas lacking in Matip’s game. For Alvarez? A tackling rate of 3.04 per 90 compared to Matip’s 1.78. For Itakura? A blocking rate of 1.92 per 90 compared to Matip’s 0.53. As a cherry on top, both are also very capable of playing in the number 6 role should another midfield crisis emerge.
Though the stats do indicate Alvarez as a better player, both would be a very welcome addition to the club.
Goncalo Inacio. 21. Sporting Kevin Danso. 24. Lens
Goncalo Inacio and Kevin Danso are more traditional centre-backs compared to Alvarez and Itakura, but incompetent in possession they are not. They may lack the tactical flexibility provided by the two aforementioned candidates, but what they can provide is excellent ball distribution and the potential of a higher ceiling over the years.
Inacio’s better stats overall, left-footedness, and younger age edge him out as my preference out of the two.

3.3. Right Back

Trent’s age makes finding a deputy for him a bit awkward as good senior right-backs wouldn’t want to join in as a bench option, while promising right-backs are almost all at his age bracket. The options then are either younger players with the potential to usurp his position or seasoned players outside of the Champions League.
Vanderson, Jonathan Clauss, Przemyslaw Frankowski, Yukinari Sugawara, and Arnau Martinez
Vanderson. 21. Monaco
A promising full-back perfecting his trade in Ligue 1, Vanderson is a future star in the making. At 21 years old, his stats far exceed his age peers, excelling in progressive passes, take-ons, tackles, interceptions, and blocks. Investing in Vanderson at this stage of Trent’s career would either mean a transition in his position to midfield a la Kimmich, or the best modern right-back pairing in Liverpool’s history.
Jonathan Clauss. 30. Marseille Przemyslaw Frankowski. 27. Lens
Jonathan Clauss and Przemyslaw Frankowski would need some convincing to come to Liverpool, but the effort would be worthwhile should Trent’s form continue to decline. Both players’ origin as wingers in the early days of their careers would suit Liverpool’s playstyle to a tee with the numbers to back them up. The gung-ho nature of our fullbacks, marauding in every transition would see both players flourish under Klopp’s instructions.
Yukinari Sugawara. 22. AZ Alkmaar Arnau Martinez. 19. Girona
Yukinari Sugawara and Arnau Martinez fulfil very contrasting roles at a similar age bracket; and as different as they are, what they’re offering as a rotation option would fill in gaps in Liverpool’s line-up all the same. Sugawara is a right-back shifted from the right-sided midfield position while Martinez is a right-back shifted from the centre-back position, and as a consequence, signing either of them would fill another gap in each respective natural position.
Tactical flexibility isn’t the only reason to sign either of them, both are also very productive numbers-wise. Sugawara is a very good attacking right back with 3 goals, 6 assists, and 10 goal-creating actions in the league to his name. The same can be said with Martinez, who although isn’t as offensively influential as Sugawara, can still produce 2 goals, 2 assists, and 4 goal-creating actions to his name. Conversely, Sugawara lags behind defensively while Martinez is ahead of him in all defensive stats.
Though the two would be astute signings, Sugawara’s offensive productivity alongside a possible role as Salah’s deputy edges him out of the two.

3.4. Left Back

Assuming Tsimikas’s departure, a similarly high-output backup for Robertson is essential for two key reasons. One is that in my opinion, the Greek Scouser breathing down Robbo’s neck is an essential part of why he is still one of the world’s best in his position. Another is that Robertson’s age should start slowing him down sooner or later, replacing Tsimikas with an equally talented replacement would ensure a continuity of excellence in our left-back position.
Jose Gaya, David Raum, Adrien Truffert, and Quentin Merlin
Jose Gaya. 27. Valencia
Why on earth is he still playing for Peter Lim’s Valencia? No explanation is needed for Gaya as he remains one of the best left-backs in the world, despite playing for a self-sabotaging owner. Should Valencia be relegated this season, Liverpool would be foolish to not even consider signing him up.
David Raum. 24. RB Leipzig Caio Henrique. 25. Monaco
David Raum and Caio Henrique are two very good attacking left-backs who might even be an upgrade over Tsimikas. Though, by the same logic, acquiring either of them would cost Liverpool a significant amount of capital for a position we’re quite happy with at the present. Although Henrique’s numbers are superior to Raum's, the underlying stats do show the former to be more consistent in creating chances for his teammates. Raum’s higher numbers in defensive stats edge him out as my personal preference between the two.
Adrien Truffert. 21. Rennes Quentin Merlin. 20. Nantes
Adrien Truffert and Quentin Merlin are two promising left-backs currently playing their trade in Ligue 1. Although still very young, both are producing respectable numbers for a full-back, especially at their age bracket. The two will probably sign for another club before blossoming into higher-calibre players, as is the case with Robertson in Hull. Accordingly, a case could be made to sign either one of them as Robertson’s French protégé. Truffert’s higher numbers in both assists and defensive stats lead me to favour him at the early stages of their careers.

3.5. Anchor Midfielder

Due to Klopp’s tendency to play a pseudo-back three in possession, the candidates for our number 6 role need to possess similar attributes to our centre-back candidates. Unfortunately, due to the defensive nature of the role, stats used to gauge a player’s ability in possession such as passes attempted, pass completion rate, progressive carries, and progressive passes are all rendered unreliable with plenty of clubs happy to see their number 6 sitting back for the duration of the game. Liverpool though does need to have these traits in our defensive midfielder, so candidates possessing them would gain an advantage over players in more counter-attacking teams.
Declan Rice, Joao Palhinha, Manuel Locatelli, Manuel Ugarte, and Florentino Luis
Declan Rice. 24. West Ham
England stalwart Declan Rice is one of if not the most sought-after players for his position, and with good reasons too. With an excellent eye for interceptions and a terrific success rate for duels won, he would bring comfort and stability wherever he goes. Possession-wise, he is also the leading contender, high volume of passes, an excellent pass completion rate, and very good numbers in ball progression. Overall, the perfect player to fit in the number 6 role.
Joao Palhinha. 27. Fulham Manuel Locatelli. 25. Juventus
With competition to Rice’s signature and his homegrown status driving up his price. Joao Palhinha and Manuel Locatelli are more than capable of emulating what he could achieve at Liverpool. Defensively they perform at a similar level to Rice, and in some aspects are even better suited to Liverpool’s playstyle. An argument can be made for Palhinha as the best in the world in terms of duels, as he is leading the top 5 European leagues in tackles whilst offering higher aerial duels and clearance numbers than Rice. Locatelli is no slouch either, achieving higher numbers than Rice in all defensive stats barring interceptions.
Palhinha’s higher numbers in duels make him the clear choice between the two, though, Locatelli’s much better possession stats do indicate him as the better fit for Liverpool.
Manuel Ugarte. 21. Sporting Florentino Luis. 23. Benfica
Florentino Luis and Manuel Ugarte are far from being the best at their position, however, they should be a wiser long-term investment than the other candidates. The two play a key role in their respective Portuguese clubs, demonstrating excellence at a young age week in and week out. With elite defensive numbers in duels and interceptions, Luis and Ugarte are both without question excellent defensive midfielders only a big transfer away from worldwide recognition.
Albeit inferior to Luis in terms of his ability in the air and with the ball, Ugarte’s younger age profile makes him my preferred choice out of the two.

3.6. Box-to-Box Midfielder

As the main engine of the team, our midfield candidates should be able to progress the ball well while maintaining a high defensive output in part due to Liverpool’s tactical set-up. While Liverpool’s system means that high creative output isn’t vital for our candidates, they should nevertheless be involved in the build-up and transitional phases of a game, whether through progressive passes, progressive carries or taking on opposing players directly.
Jude Bellingham, Mikel Merino, Ismael Bennacer, Manu Kone, and Enzo Le Fee
Jude Bellingham. 19. Dortmund
Currently one of if not outright the best in his position, simple as.
Mikel Merino. 26. Real Sociedad Ismael Bennacer. 25. Milan
Mikel Merino and Ismael Bennacer both fit the bill well for the number 8 role in Klopp’s midfield three. Should either one of them sign for Liverpool, they would add a defensive integrity solely lacking due to Fabinho and Henderson’s decline. Both also offer different defensive traits to their midfield; Merino is excellent in aerial duels and clearance, while Bennacer is better at ground duels and interceptions.
Merino’s dominance in the air edges him out as my preferred choice between the two players.
Manu Kone. 21. Monchengladbach Enzo Le Fee. 23. Lorient
Manu Kone and Enzo Le Fee might cost the least in this category, but acquiring either of them would significantly strengthen Liverpool’s midfield. As are the candidates before them, Kone and Le Fee excel in ball progression. Both are elite in taking on opposing players, with Kone and Le Fee placing in the 99th and 96th percentile in terms of successful take-ons across all midfielders in the top 5 leagues. Similarly, both maintain a good rate of progressive carries and passes, with Le Fee in particular performing at an elite level in terms of carries.
Defensively, they’re no slouch either. Kone and Le Fee are producing more than-average numbers in blocks and interceptions, and very good numbers in tackles. Le Fee’s lack of physical stature seems to not be a hindrance, as his 3.29 rate of tackles per 90 places him in the 95th percentile in terms of tackles. All in all, two very good midfielders who would fit perfectly in Klopp’s midfield three.

3.6.1. Playmaker Midfielder?

Liverpool has been rumoured to sign Mason Mount for months and honestly, the thought of him in the squad throws a wrench into my original draft. Initially, I thought that Liverpool needed at least 2 starting box-to-box midfielders to fill in our upcoming departures. Mount though can fill in for this gap alongside other offensive roles should another injury crisis emerge at Anfield. Should he choose to stay at Chelsea, Liverpool can either pursue another no. 8 or an alternative flexible playmaker instead. This section is written with the assumption of the latter, rather than the former.
Mason Mount, Daichi Kamada, Brais Mendez, Lovro Majer, and Aleksandr Golovin
Mason Mount. 24. Chelsea
The team had been linked to numerous playmakers over the years, notably, the consistent Brandt and Gotze rumours before Mane and Salah’s meteoric rise. However, their arrivals see them either adapt as a number 8 (Wijnaldum), play on the wings (Carvalho), or even side-lined entirely to cup games (Minamino). Whichever the case may be for Mount, his brief time in the Premier League shows an excellent hardworking playmaker with the bonus of fulfilling our home-grown quota.
Daichi Kamada. 26. Eintracht Frankfurt Brais Mendez. 26. Real Sociedad
Daichi Kamada and Brais Mendez are both more than adequate alternatives to Mason Mount. Similarly, both play a creative role behind a striker, either centrally or as an inside-winger. Output wise they are currently amongst Europe’s most productive playmakers, with both contributing 7 goals alongside 4 and 3 assists in their respective league.
The two high-pressing playmakers are also more than capable of contributing defensively, with Kamada in particular performing well enough to be placed at the 90th percentile for tackles + interceptions across all midfielders in the top 5 European leagues. His tenacity to win the ball back edges him out between the two as my preferred choice.
Lovro Majer. 25. Rennes Aleksandr Golovin. 26. Monaco
The last candidates for a possible new role in Liverpool’s line-up are Lovro Majer and Aleksandr Golovin. Like Kamada and Mendez, both are creative playmakers with a willingness to press, tackle, and be the first line of their team’s defence. The two players though differ in what they could offer tactically. Lovro Majer’s higher numbers in passing completion, passing volume, progressive passes, and take-ons could see him shift to more of an attacking number 8. Golovin meanwhile with his much higher creative output could play as a deputy for the wingers.

3.7. Right Winger

With Jota rumoured to leave and Klopp refusing to start Elliott in his natural position, a gap remains dormant in Liverpool’s right wing. Candidates should have a respectable creative output, and a consistent ability to progress the ball higher up the field. Additionally, successful take-ons should be a high priority for the candidates. After all, with Sadio Mane’s departure, Luis Diaz is the only remaining player in Liverpool’s frontline with the ability to consistently beat his marker.
Moussa Diaby, David Neres, Marco Asensio, and Tete
Moussa Diaby. 23. Leverkusen David Neres. 27. Napoli
The first two candidates are Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby and David Neres, both very good players with all the characteristics required for a winger. Attacking output? Check. Diaby’s 8 goals and 4 assists along with Neres’ 6 goals and 5 assists paint a picture of two very productive wingers. Ball progression? Check. Neres’ progressive carries, passes, and take-ons are amongst the best in his league, while Diaby’s progressive carries make up for his average passes and take-ons figures. The only missing part of their game is a lack of respectable defensive numbers, something fixable with enough sessions at Kirkby.
The age profile, numbers, and a harder league to play in making it a clear choice for Diaby. Even so, Neres would be an astute second choice should the cost of acquiring Diaby be too prohibitive.
Marco Asensio. 27. Real Madrid
A class creative playmaker available out of contract; to hell with Marco Asensio’s take-ons stats, refusing to sign a player of his calibre for free is a fool’s errand.
Tete. 23. Lyon, on loan at Leicester City Vaclav Cerny. 25. Twente
While the three wingers mentioned above are all very good in terms of performance, Tete and Vaclav Cerny are excellent in the sense that both are the perfect wingers for Liverpool. In terms of output, both are having the season of their life with 7 goals and 2 assists for Tete, and 9 goals and 4 assists for Cerny. In addition, both are also very good at beating their man with a successful take-on rate of 2.25 and 2.6 per 90. What makes them perfect for Liverpool however is their willingness to win the ball back out of possession. Amongst Liverpool’s frontline, our false 9s Jota and Gakpo are the only ones with comparable defensive figures.

4. Conclusion

At the minimum, Liverpool needs 3-4 signings to remain competitive in Europe. That amount though is an optimistic estimate that implies a return in form for the rest of the squad. Conversely, we are looking at 7-8 signings in the very worst-case scenario of further regressing performances and rumoured departures. Both sit at the extreme end of each side, and realistically speaking we should expect the real amount to be closer to the lower estimate.
Of the highest priority is signing 2-3 starting midfielders to address upcoming departures, and more importantly, the decline of Fabinho and Henderson. Reverting to Klopp’s double pivot is also a possibility with Firmino set to depart in the summer. Replacing Matip with a quality centre-back should also be a priority if Gomez and Virgil were to regress further along the season.
If Jota, Kelleher, and Tsimikas’s rumoured departures turn out to be true, we also need to replace them with adequate rotation options in each respective role. The last possible signing is fully dependent on Ramsay’s future. Once recovered from his injury, will Klopp trust him enough to bench Trent?. Should the answer be untrue, offloading him and acquiring another right back is the sensible thing to do.
The candidates I found most attractive are Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Kim Min-Jae, and Mason Mount. These are elite players that will not only transform Liverpool’s fortunes but also take shape as Klopp’s Liverpool legacy the same way Shankly’s 1972 rebuild had in footballing history. Of course, more sensible options are also available as well in these areas. Even then, the focus of the rebuild should still be acquiring and fielding the most talented players in these roles. Of lesser importance to Liverpool’s glory are the rotation options for the goalkeeper, right back, left back, and right winger spots. For these positions, Marco Carnesecchi, Yukinari Sugawara, Adrien Truffert, and Tete are all examples of sensible signings for each respective role without breaking the bank.
Credits to FBref.com and Opta as the main source of the stats, Transfermarkt as a source for candidates’ injury records and transfer estimates, and Excel for refusing to print my radar diagrams you useless anti-trust software. A big thank you to Opta especially as they finally added back progressive carries to Fbref.com the tight bastards.
Lastly, I began writing this article 2 weeks before posting it here. If there are any statistical errors or listed players who signed for other clubs since the time of writing, all I can say is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
TL; DR: Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Kim Min-Jae, and Mason Mount. Skim along the article for suitable alternatives and candidates in other less urgent areas of the squad.

2023.03.21 17:25 pillowwwws Kid-friend career change seems impossible

Mom-related: I have 2 pre-school kids, and I'm recently separated with majority custody. I have to have a job that allows me some flexibility for my kids, because my ex and his job only allows so much time off.
I am feeling so defeated and trapped. I don't know how much of this might be unrealistic expectations for a job search, so any feedback regarding that would be helpful. TL;DR: I need to leave a nightmare job, but it's been almost three full months of rejection, and I'm concerned that my background is both too broad and too niche to be able to jump industries.
I was a business owner for several years pre-pandemic in a pretty niche industry. Pandemic killed our revenues, so we shut down near the end of that year. Had my second kid, then decided to re-enter the workforce because I knew I was already looking at significant setback from self-employment. Figured finance was a good enough direction to head; pretty relevant to business-owning, right?
Turns out, no, not really. Of course I end up choosing the industry that still wants its own degree (side note: I do understand why that is, and I'm not questioning it.). So I'm getting rejections left and right for not having that kind of degree.
Well, I have lab/life science experience, too. Not super stoked about that, because that's a lot less kid-friendly, but this current job is awful. And nope! Auto-rejections and hand-written rejections there, too!
I guess my experience isn't sufficient for finance, but too old for lab science? What the hell can I do otherwise? I have had my resume reviewed by several professionals, I tailor it to the application, I have good references, I include cover letters (and I was scoring interviews previously with cover letters, but that's now no guarantee at all). Was on a 5/5 offer after interview as well until these last two months.
I'm panicking because this nightmare job is so bad that I'm afraid I will quit in the heat of a moment without a backup. I am pretty much out of savings due to the separation. My best lead isn't probably going to make a hire until the middle of next month, not to mention that I might not be able to afford to take that job (part time, in office 40 miles away). I mean, I guess I could take on more student loans and just quit to go back to school? I don't know how the money would work then, either. I still have bills to pay.
This is so disjointed, I'm sorry. But if anyone could provide feedback on how long a realistic job search would go on for when trying to pivot to a more technical field; or how to actually get a call back; or how to cope with a nightmare job where all you want to do is quit but you need to pay rent..

2023.03.21 17:23 shadowkat678 [Online][Roll20][CoC 7e][Sunday 7pm CST][$20/week] Crimson Letters, a 3-5 session Call of Cthulhu mini campaign looking for three to five investigators to solve the case!

Crimson Letters

We start our story at Arkham Massachusetts, and more specifically at Miskatonic University, where a rather strange death has just occurred. Professor Charles Leiter was found in his office. The official cause of death is a heart attack.
Yet, the Dean seems to be interested enough in the circumstances, or at least on a project the professor had been working on before he died, that he calls you in at the recommendation of the morgue assistant. You are all connected to an amateur university investigation club, with a bent toward the unexplained. With no one else to turn to and not wanting this to get out to the press and create a potential scandal, Dean Fallon puts you all on the case. Surely nothing can go wrong?
Hello, I'm Kat! An experienced Game Master but newer to Call of Cthulhu and looking to dip my toes into the system with a short adventure on Roll20. By my estimate, Crimson Letters will last from three to five sessions depending on how deeply the group...well, investigates!
It will be starting on Sunday April 2nd and going weekly until the scenario wraps up.
Crimson Letters leans rather heavily into a sandbox style of game where it'll be up to your sleuthing to discover exactly what happened to the deceased Professor Leiter, as well as the whereabouts of some missing documents he'd been researching prior to his death. This is not a linear point A to B to C scenario. Where you go, who you talk to, and how you go about solving this case before it's too late is completely up to you! So get your notepads ready, and keep an eye out for shadows moving in the dark...

Character Creation

I have made a set of nine premade investigators that you can choose from for this adventure, complete with background information and ties to the scenario and the other investigators involved. I am open to talking about tweaks to characters if you would like, but as a new Keeper, using premade, especially for a short scenario, is the way I have decided to go to help both me and any new players.

What is provided

I will set up music, splash screens, and a lot of props. All you need to do is show up. Everything else is provided and I've done my best to make sure it's an atmospheric and professional experience. I will again forewarn you that though I am an experienced Game Master, I am newer to the system of CoC, so I am still becoming acquainted with the rules.
That said, I have read both the Keeper and Investigator guides as well as posted a number of resources to the Discord channel for help with rules referencing on anything that may arise that I am not as familiar with, as well as to help other newcomers to the system.

About the Keeper

I have been running various games for about seven years now, from (with varying amounts of experience) Cyberpunk Red, Blades in the Dark, Vampire the Masquerade, D&D 5e, Avatar Legends, and now Call of Cthulhu 7e. I come from a writing and amateur acting background, so my big love as a Game Master is making a realistic, breathing, and growing world for players to impact and explore. I particularly pride myself on making a cast of dynamic NPCs to interact with, regardless of system.
I am not a voice actor. I can do a few accents, and some funny voices, but mostly I try to vary tones, speech patterns, and other smaller aspects. If you come in expecting Matthew Mercer's level of acting skill, you will be disappointed. I have not been to VA school. I have been told, however, that I can do a near-perfect sheep impersonation.
Lastly, I value communication and mutual respect. I find 99% of problems at a table stem from not understanding the boundaries and expectations of other players, and listening to the group around you. If you have problems or concerns, we will talk about them like mature adults and try our best to find a solution.
My table is always a safe space for minority communities and bigotry, despite playing in an era where it runs rampant, is not tolerated by players.
Any experience level is welcome as long as you're liking what you're reading and enjoy story-driven games with a large amount of roleplaying. If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to ask, and feel free to pm me on Discord at Shadowkat678#0160 where I will see any messages quicker.

When you sign up, please let confirm that you agree to the following conditions:

-Payment will be $20/session through Paypal, Venmo, or Startplaying (Though this last option is a bit more expensive due to fees I have to pay).
-Please be eighteen years old or older to apply.
-New players are welcome but note that this is an RP-heavy story with a more complicated plot, so please make sure you are comfortable with that.
-Make sure you can commit to the sessions, time slot, and payment amount.
-Have a clear microphone and a stable internet connection, please.
-Just be a decent person.

Player Reviews

Here are a few reviews from players already in current campaigns that I'm plucking off of my StartPlaying profile.
Jack:
"Kat is very prepared and invested in the lore and story, but remains open to player collaboration and shows interest and engagement with character details across the board. (...) The game world feels dense and alive, with much going on beyond the party's knowledge, and also open to charting our own course. Highly recommended."
Nick:
"They put a lot of effort into their story weaving, and the attention to detail really shows. (...) Heavily roleplay focused, these sessions have really made it feel as though we are living, breathing entities in the world, and we are going to shape our story by our own means. It is delightful to have such an open and caring DM who considers everyone in the conversations, and makes sure everyone has a chance to shine."
GM Gabe (DnDUnlimited):
"They know what players want/need to hear and how to adjust on the fly to bring the story to life. The best way, I think, to describe their gameplay is IMMERSIVE. They bring you in with amazing hooks and keep you going with plot twists that you never see coming. They are fun and intuitive when it comes to role-playing and always find a way to make, both the storyline and linked NPCs feel real. If it isn't enough that they do all that, they allow for some epic rule of cool moments and know exactly when to apply them and not. "
Timothy:
"I've been playing with Kat for years now, first as a fellow player alongside them, then also as a player in games they've run. They never fail to be creative and nuanced, especially when it comes to the dramatic roleplaying side of things. Always a delight to share the table with."
Speaking of Startplaying, if you would like to sign up through that site, I upped the price to match StartPlaying's Fees, HOWEVER I am also offering an Early Bird Discount for the first two people who sign up on the site, which would half the price for a session and would have you registered as someone who has officially played with me if you wished to leave me a review on my profile after the game has ended. Let me know and I can send you a link.

2023.03.21 17:17 HxH101kite Can someone provide me insight or direction?

I read the buyers guide and emailed the mods (never got a response) hence the post. I'd just like direction on what brand or board people would reccomend me.
I have been longboarding for 10+ years (took some time off here and there) but let's call it that. Snowboarded for 15+ would put myself in the expert column.
I can surf ok, I don't live near a surf spot but anytime I have went I have had no issues keeping up.
I am looking for brand that will really allow me to carve and imitate snowboarding as best as possible. I generally and just gonna rip around parking lots and shred some mid size hills in our neighborhood.
I have a 42 inch sector 9 drop through and a a 29 inch Maui kicktail. I'd rather not convert what I have an buy new.
The buyers guide is confusing as I think I blur the line between a lot of the reccomendations.
So I ask what would this sub suggest.

The main advantage of installing fences at home is that immediate feeling that your privacy is well protected. Let's not forget that they greatly enhance the deterrent factor. This can prevent many burglaries. They also provide a real physical line of defense for your home.
Vinyl fencing is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The PVC resin is combined with special ingredients that give the fences exceptional impact resistance, durability and waterproofing.vinyl is a low-maintenance material compared to other fencing materials. On top of that, they are very versatile.
They allow any opening system to adapt to your needs, thus achieving a better entrance of natural light and maintaining a functionality of use adapted to your needs. They also allow for easy customization as they can be painted in almost any color.
Plastic fencing is a safe choice for families and pets. Vinyl is non-toxic, while wood fences have to be treated with chemicals in order to protect them from the elements. Vinyl does not splinter and is not nailed down or left with sharp corners that can injure children and animals. Plastic is an environmentally friendly fencing material because it is fully recyclable, and is a good option in the face of the dwindling number of trees being used for fencing.

2023.03.21 17:14 Delicious-Vast3483 Emophilia?

Oh man... Here I am once again. Story time i guess (idk it's my first time using reddit)
I was sitting quietly in class when I heard some of my classmates behind me needing scissors. The girl near me asked me if i had one and I did have one so I lent it to her. A few minutes later, she hands it back to me then says "Thank you" which I replied with a nod. After doing a quick nod, I went to place the scissors in my bag when I heard her say "I love you"
At that time, i was too shocked to move because of what she said. I was really having a tough time due to family problems and hearing some say that to me just made me feel at happy.
As cringy as it seems, i self diagnosed my self with Emophilia (Falling in love too quickly) after my observation with my feelings. I really don't want to fall because she is one of my friend's best friend and falling might ruin our friendly relationship and I don't want that.
I know that she meant the "I love you" in a friendly way but just... Man I can't stop myself. She sees me as her little cousin because I'm smaller. She also hugged me earlier which didn't really help with the case. Idk for know. Should I just avoid her?? Idk (Sorry for bad English)

2023.03.21 17:10 Zh1fangGrant I need help

For some background, I have always had a hard time connecting with people on an romantic and emotional level. recently I met this girl who I really connected with, like staying up all night on the phone talking, texting through out the day etc. Our first date went really well and felt a genuine connection. The second date for the vast majority of it went very well to. We were binge watching movies in my bed and just cuddling. Before she had to leave We started to make out, and I thought everything was fine. It was only until after she left that she told me she had a panic attack on the drive home ( she had an experience in the past that messed her up apparently) and that she was uncomfortable with my advances. I have since apologized but it seems she immediately moved on and didn’t want to try to continue the relationship. At this point it’s been almost 3 weeks since this and I have been severely depressed, can’t eat, can’t focus on school, the works. I am asking for advice, I have tried seeing other people and I honestly don’t find anyone else desirable. I know it was only two weeks to, which isn’t that long, and yet I feel like a lost the best potential partner I’ll ever meet. Just looking for coping mechanisms you guys use, because I’m mentally dying here.

2023.03.21 17:09 InternationalWash822 Warren Buffett invested in these Fintech Companies - How does SOFI Measure Up?

Warren Buffett invested in these Fintech Companies - How does SOFI Measure Up?
The fintech industry has seen one of the most exciting growth trends as it revolutionizes how people access financial services. Right now, there are over 30,000 fintech startups and by the end of 2021, fintech investment reached a total of $210 billion. The fintech sphere is only expected to grow, so I believe it is a very attractive industry for investors and Warren Buffet seems to think so too.
The Oracle of Omaha has been making large investments in multiple fintech companies. In fact, Buffet has invested over $900M (107.1M shares) in the Brazilian company, Nu Holdings, and $907M (30M shares) in ALLY. This is a huge investment even for someone like Buffett. Nu Holdings is actually his 8th largest investment in terms of shares. This raises the question, why has Buffett invested in these other fintech companies, but not in Sofi?
Throughout this post, I’ll be talking about Sofi, ALLY, and Nu Holdings - comparing their pros, cons, and similarities. My goal here is to see if there is room for 3 top dogs in the fintech industry or not.
Why has Buffett purchased a lot of shares of Nu Holdings, specifically?
For starters, the company has grown its customer base to 70.9 million clients in just over a year since going public. Nu Holdings provides credit cards to people who are not eligible to get one through other banks & tries to minimize risk by reducing the eligible benefits that the customer is initially eligible for. As they pay their bills on time, they unlock more benefits & more credit limits.
Another reason is its management. It's no secret that Buffett likes to invest in companies with good management. As he once said, “When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding management, our favorite holding period is forever.”
Nu Holdings has recently hired David Marcus (former president of PayPal & former Meta Board member) on March 6 to be part of its Board of Directors. It’s expected that David will play a crucial role in Nu’s journey going forward.
The rest of the management team brings a lot of experience to the table as well:
  • CEO, David Velez, was a partner at Sequoia capital between January 2011 & March 2013. He also worked for Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and General Atlantic.
  • CGO, Cristina Junqueira, worked for a Boston Consulting group before founding Nu Holdings in 2013.
  • CFO, Guilherme Lago, worked in Credit Suisse Group AG & Mckinsey as well.
  • CPO, Jagpreet Duggal, worked as a director of product management at Facebook.
So you can see Nu’s management team has significant experience in this sector and under their leadership, Nu Holdings grew its revs from $1.7 billion in 2021 to $4.8 billion in 2022 - a 182.3% increase YoY.
Nu Holdings’ Edge - Brazil’s Unbanked Population
Before Nu Holdings started, over 55 million Brazilians were unbanked. This is because it's notoriously difficult for people who are not wealthy to obtain credit cards in Brazil. In general, it's very difficult to get a credit card in Latin America without being one of the wealthy elites.
By offering credit cards to people who would not be able to obtain one any other way, Nu has captured a large, untapped market. This is the main reason Nu is as successful as it is today.
Compared to SOFI, Nu Holdings has a much larger client base, this is of course due to its operations in Brazil, Mexico, & Columbia which in total have a larger population than the US. Thanks in part to these widespread operations, Forbes listed Nu Holdings as one of the world’s best banks in 2022.
Nu Holdings has a larger client base, more revenues, and is growing at a much faster rate than Sofi. The main reason for this is the fact that Nu Holdings doesn’t have as many competitors as Sofi, especially since they focus on an untapped market in Latin America. With Sofi, they have competitors right, left, and center due to established banks and fintech competitors. Nu Holdings became profitable Q3 2022 - only a year after its inception. After making a net profit of $7.8 million in Q3, it went on to make $58 million the next quarter and is on track to report an EPS of $0.02 & $1.393B in revenues in Q1 2023
Whereas SOFI is still struggling to become profitable and is forecast to make an EPS of $-0.077 & $442.262M in revenue in Q1 2023.

How are Nu Holdings & Sofi similar?
But Nu Holdings & Sofi share one very important thing in common. They both want to be a one stop shop for financial services.
Since Sofi specializes in student loan refinancing, it creates a bond with younger customers who - hopefully - will turn into lifelong customers that use Sofi for all their banking needs. Similarly, Nu Holdings offers credit cards to customers younger than 18 in Brazil - capturing a demographic of young people who will hopefully become lifelong customers.
This means that both companies could continue to grow and expand as their customer base grows older and younger generations adopt their services as well.

Why has Buffett invested in ALLY?
Having invested $1.7B since 2012 in the industry giant, General Motors, you could say Buffet is an expert on the auto industry. Which helps explain why Buffett took an interest in Ally.
This fintech company offers multiple services but specializes in the auto loan industry since it once was a financing division of GM, originally known as GMAC. After GM sold the rest of its 8.5% stake in Ally for $900M in 2013, Ally has expanded its market by offering mortgages, credit cards, wealth management, & other services.

https://preview.redd.it/y1c473va84pa1.png?width=605&format=png&auto=webp&s=84b47713c9d3fc8551a21260e51fc863cc7d1570
Another reason Buffett is investing in ALLY could be its history of share buybacks. Buffett is a big believer in stock buybacks and has said they can be the best use of corporate capital. ALLY also offers quarterly dividends to shareholders, which is a sign of the company’s fundamental strength.
How does ALLY compare to Sofi?
The main difference is the source of Ally’s revenue. 65.6% of Ally’s total revenue in 2022 came from the auto finance industry, while Sofi’s edge is student loan refinancing. In 2019, Sofi generated 59.7% of its revenue from student loans. But it’s worth noting that it can be quite difficult to qualify for student loan refinancing if you have a bad credit score whereas it’s a bit easier for people to get auto loans.

https://preview.redd.it/q9efotfb84pa1.png?width=615&format=png&auto=webp&s=3dc7776eb6c02cd0e9293b82cb11e14b391cd86b
How are Ally & Sofi similar?
Ally & Sofi both offer commission free stock trading for investors with a high APY as well. Ally’s savings account offers 3.60% APY and Sofi offers 3.75% APY with a direct deposit. This means that with a direct deposit, you’ll earn a higher APY with Sofi, but without one, you’d earn a higher APY with Ally.
Both companies offer multiple services such as mortgage loans, credit cards, insurance, etc. and are online banks with no physical locations. Given their different niches, it makes sense that Ally’s customers tend to be millennials while Sofi’s customers tend to be students or fresh graduates.
Sofi’s Edge
So after going through the pros and cons of all three of these companies, you might be wondering if SOFI has what it takes to gain market share in the growing Fintech industry.
I believe Sofi has an edge over these two competitors when it comes to diversification. The two pictures below show the type of services that Sofi & Ally offer. Sofi is constantly trying to increase its market by opening up different services to attract new customers. To name a few:
  • Sofi Relay: Allows members to link all their existing deposit accounts, investment accounts, & retirement accounts into a single mobile dashboard.
  • Money Vaults: Helps users prioritize saving money. Vaults are used to save money for a certain purchase to be made in the future (Ex. Car or house).
  • Retirement accounts: Traditional, Roth, & SEP IRAs
    • Traditional: Traditional retirement account, withdrawable
    • Roth: Allows you to contribute after-tax dollars, and then withdraw the money tax free in retirement.
    • SEP IRA: A retirement account for someone who’s self-employed.
  • Sofi Protect: Gathers details to get comparisons on insurance providers to find the best rate for you.
  • Sofi Invest:
    • Crypto investing: offers trading for 30 cryptocurrencies with a 1.25% charge per trade.
    • Stock investing: stock and ETF investing commission free.
    • Automated Investing with goal setting, auto rebalancing, & Diversification
  • Loans:
    • Wedding loans: Loans used to purchase an engagement ring, wedding, or honeymoon with a low fixed-rate personal loan from $5k-$100k.
    • Travel Loans: Loan used to travel. Low fixed rate personal loan from $5k to $100k.
    • Law school loans: Loan for Law school students. Competitive rates, exclusive member benefits, & no fees
    • MBA Loans
    • Home Improvement loans
  • Cyber Insurance: Protection from Cyber financial fraud, cyber extortion, identity theft, phishing scams
  • Sofi Insights: Tracks all your money in one place on the mobile app, monitor your credit score, set multiple goals, track your spending.
  • Estate Planning: Partnered with Trust & Will to give members 15% off their trust.
I recently learned that SOFI is even letting its customers get early access to IPOs which could draw more traders to the company’s services. If SOFI underwrites more IPOs, investors like you and me may join its platform just to get in on that action. Personally, I think this is a fantastic service because up till now IPOs have been a very exclusive process.

https://preview.redd.it/0vcs7h5c84pa1.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=3521404dec4a95cb3ed2212eb32bbee5416a0fd1
Besides diversification, SOFI’s focus on student loan refinancing is also a plus imo. College education is essential in the US and without a college degree, most people can only get so far in their career.
For instance, 53.7% of the US working population in 2021 graduated from college and at least 75% of new jobs require a college degree.
When you factor in the average cost of tuition - which has soared 31.4% from 2010-2020 - and that the average student debt among college graduates is $28,000, SOFI is in a great position to profit from this sector.
Given this inflationary environment & higher interest rates, I think that demand for student loan refinancing will only increase. This is because employers are constantly looking for people with degrees & the number of jobs requiring this are increasing every year. So it's no surprise that CEO Anthony Noto recently said, “We’d expect the demand for that product (student loans) to really go through the roof and be back to normalized levels that we saw in 2019.”
But with the student loan pause in place, SOFI is losing a lot of money. The company stated that it has lost $300M to $400M and is pushing very hard to get a decision passed ending the student loan moratorium. The Supreme Court already heard the oral arguments regarding the case and is expected to give a decision in June.
If things are not resolved by then or the Supreme Court rules against federal student loan forgiveness, then payments are expected to resume by the end of August. This is because payments are expected to start up again, 60 days following the ruling.
Needless to say this would be a huge catalyst for SOFI and I, personally, believe that the Supreme Court will rule in SOFI’s favor. And the flood of refinancing requests that could come in once this limbo ends could give SOFI’s revenues a much-needed push. With this in mind, June will be a make-or-break moment for SOFI.
Now, you might be thinking ‘that’s great and all but what about Buffett’s 8th largest investment by shares? OP is just some dude on the internet, and this is THE Warren Buffett’.

https://preview.redd.it/w3k57vtc84pa1.png?width=288&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e5770fad03ae86cb15bcbe116bc706a512d9364
Well, you wouldn’t be wrong. It's hard to argue against Warren Buffett’s logic and I think NU could be a good investment as well, but compared to SOFI, I think that it presents a lot more risk.
For one thing, Brazil has just gotten out of one of its worst economic crises in history and with a new government taking over there’s a lot of uncertainty. Corruption is very high in Brazil, and banks which provide their services almost exclusively to the rich in Brazil could use their power to turn the government against Nu Holdings if they feel threatened.
Also, giving out credit cards to kids under 18 (even if the card’s benefits are limited) just sounds really risky to me. Given that most people in Brazil are not as financially well off as most US residents, its weaker currency, and struggling economy, Nu Holdings could face the greatest risk of all three companies. But time will tell whether the Brazilian government will make life easier or more difficult for a company like Nu Holdings.
So this means that ALLY, which also focuses on the US market for financial services, is probably SOFI’s greatest competition.
Both companies have a lot in common, but they’ve chosen to specialize in different niches. So let’s break it down:
  • 91.55% of households reported having access to at least one vehicle in 2020, however, the number of registered vehicles declined between 2012-2019 by over 25 million.
  • The average cost of a car in 2021 was $42,258 with an average payment of $563 per month. Today, it costs an average of $48,080 to purchase a new car.
  • Moreover, around 31% of American adults have relied on auto loans to pay for their car in 2022.
  • Rising inflation has caused new vehicle prices to increase 5.8% YoY according to February’s CPI report, although used car prices decreased 13.6% from last year (probably due to overstock).
With ALLY being specialized in the auto industry, its fortunes may take a hit as the US enters a recession since consumers are less likely to purchase new or expensive vehicles when they are monitoring their budgets. New vehicle sales dropped nearly 40% during the 2008 recession and I believe history is likely to repeat itself here if the economy enters a recession.
Regardless of the potential hit to the automotive sector, when you compare auto loans to student loans you quickly see that student loans take the cake.
The market size of the Auto leasing, loans, & sales financing industry is $173.2 billion, while the student loan industry is a massive $1.76 trillion. So Sofi has the upper hand here in terms of the market potential.
With college tuition constantly increasing & students entering college year after year,
SOFI also has stricter requirements for qualifying for personal loans, such as a credit score of 680 and other factors which make their loans comparatively safer since its clients are more thoroughly vetted. This is good because it allows Sofi to minimize the potential risk of a customer not being able to pay back their loan in the future.
Conclusion:
So, in conclusion, I think SOFI is in a fairly safe spot as long as the Supreme Court gives a favorable ruling. Since Nu Holdings operates in Latin America it won’t compete with Sofi for market share. Ally & Sofi also have different specializations, but Ally is a more established FinTech company which could take customers from Sofi. Still, SOFI’s goal is to become a one stop shop for all financial services and it has diversified its services extensively over the years which could give it an edge in this industry.
Personally, I believe SOFI will be able to grow its customer base better than ALLY because it appeals directly to young adults heading into college. If these customers have a good experience, then SOFI can become their go-to financial service provider for the rest of their life.
On this note, the FinTech industry is on track for major growth especially since Covid-19 acted as a catalyst for the industry - leading to wider adoption at a time when contactless payments were becoming essential.
Besides this, the FinTech industry will likely continue to grow just out of sheer practicality. For one thing, Fintech cuts down servicing costs like maintaining physical branches while still providing a very high value service. As more and more transactions move online, the digital revolution continues to work in the industry’s favor and the widespread adoption of smartphones means that our phones will increasingly act as wallets. So, it's not surprising that the use of Fintech companies increased 88% from 2020 to 2021.
So I'm pretty bullish on three of these stocks for the time being at least.
Now for the TA...
$SOFI

https://preview.redd.it/djuk58id84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74f72c6e21506030efc6bbc44374cb04b07096bb
$SOFI has been stuck in a sideways channel since April 2022. The stock has a strong resistance at $7.59 which it tested on its positive Q4 earnings, however SOFI dropped almost 18% to its support at $5.25 due to market uncertainty.
Now trading at $5.20, SOFI is below the 50, 200, and 21 MAs on the daily timeframe. Despite this, I’m expecting a bounce and potential retest of the $7.59 resistance leading up to the Supreme Court decision in June since the RSI oversold at 30.
Right now SOFI is fundamentally oversold IMO. I bought 1k shares here as a starter with a stop loss at the $4.92 support. I’ll be averaging down under the $5.25 support or averaging up depending on the trend. My take profits will be the 200 MA, $6.43 resistance and the $7.59 resistance.

https://preview.redd.it/pakxnr1e84pa1.jpg?width=1458&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fb5c7d97c02030b7ad888463c4c2cf572e973c5
$ALLY:

https://preview.redd.it/8zwd6jme84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af9de5ffc042ca2bfaf546417438edac1e9dc409
ALLY was in a downward channel all of 2022 but it broke out at the start of 2023 - testing the $34 resistance after earnings. Since then the trend has reversed and is now bearish. The stock touched its $21.91 support mostly due to market turmoil rather than fundamentals.
I’m expecting ALLY to break out of this channel like it did at the start of this year when it approached the $34 support. The stock recently tested what was once the upper trendline and bounced off of it which is a bullish sign.
Personally, I think that these banking fears will dissipate now that the government has stepped in - as illustrated by the XLF closing green on Monday. Looking at the daily timeframe, ALLY is oversold with the RSI at 30 so I am expecting a bounce over the next few weeks.
Long-term, I think ALLY will trade in a sideways channel between the $23.80 support and $34 resistance until a strong catalyst is able to break it out.
But for now, I’ll take a swing here with a stoploss at $23 and my take profits at $27.05 and the 50MA.
$NU:

https://preview.redd.it/1x33g57f84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e1b3757785d4d1a40bd84ea5607052fd7d5c833
Compared to ALLY and SOFI, NU has not dropped as dramatically, which is likely due to its exposure to Latin American markets rather than the US.
The stock is currently trending downwards within the sideways channel. The stock is testing the 200 MA on the daily chart, if it breaks through it I will be going short with the lower trendline as my take profit and the 50 MA as my SL.

2023.03.21 17:07 No-Consequence7077 F/150cm/ SW: 77kg>66.6Kg/People behaving differently.

This is me talking very first time. I am the person who keeps everything to myself and then stress & harm my body (like stress eating). Sorry for long post.
I started my weight loss journey this January. I'm on medication for thyroid which made me gain nearly 20 kgs in 4 years. last year I was gaining 4kg per month after joining gym and healthy diet all because of medication. Anyhow I managed to follow diet and turn my bmi from extremely obese to overweight.
Recently, I visited my friend. we planned on going out after long time. My friend and her husband started commenting about my weight and made rude comments on me even after knowing my medical situation, forcefully asking me to make diet including things like celery etc. (I can't stand smell of celery. I literally puked after consuming it.) we had long discussion about all this. we were together for 5-6 hours and they didn't stop for single food break, while both were having chips and made me starve for those hours because I'm fat.
Immediately after dropping me back, my friend is posting pictures of lunch with ice-cream, pizzas, etc. It made me feel really bad.

2023.03.21 17:07 Re-medy Found out my best friend watches MtF porn and think he might be repressing his sexuality

Sorry for such a cliche post but I have to get this off my chest or I might explode.
I’m [28M] in love with my best friend [26M] and have been agonizing over my feelings for almost two years as he has claimed to be straight in the past but now I’m not so sure.
I recently found out that he looks at transgender porn when he was showing me something on his phone. I don’t think he noticed but I saw the tab very briefly with the pornstar’s flow page. Not to mention, the porn he looks at heavily features the woman’s penis and butthole more so than her breasts.
I honestly wasn’t expecting this to be something he would look at as he usually doesn’t comment on women and kind of gives off the impression that he doesn’t look at porn. Now I know trans women are women and he could just like that aspect of them having feminine characteristics while also have a dick but I still think it goes beyond that.
He and I spend an unhealthy 90-95% of our day together outside of work—whether online or in person. He has recently started living with me for a few months as well since he got a job in my city but will be moving into his own place soon. He wanted to move to a two bedroom together but I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle my feelings if we were to continue being that close. I also thought it wouldn’t be fair for him and wanted him to have his own space when I hopefully come out to him soon (as bisexual). He did however get an apartment in the same building as me so there’s that..
I’m not sure what I want out of posting this but I really just need to get it out there and I’m not going to tell anyone in my life my friend’s porn habits out of respect for his privacy. I just think it adds to all my suspicions from his past behavior—usually when he’s drunk he gets more affectionate where there have been times he will wrap his arms around a my neck in a hug and kind of whisper or breathe into my ear, he even did this in public twice. Then he will pull back and be like “that’s gay” even though he was the one doing it.
He has said “I love you” a few times and has also said “I’ll miss you” when we go to sleep for the night (when we lived in separate places) even though we talk all day every day. He has also gone out of his way to sleep near me when we’re both drinking, even if it’s on the floor. One night he kept saying “I want to sleep next to you” a few times when I tried to get him in his own bed. And when he gets hyper drunk he will sometimes keep saying “I’m gay” even when all of our friends are around and everyone just laughs it off as a joke.
He had a long term girlfriend in the past but so have I and he said he is just focusing on himself now and hasn’t tried to date anyone and anytime I mention a girl he kind of brushes it off and says—“we should find you a girlfriend.”
There’s a ton more little things he has done over time and maybe I just keep reading into them too much but it’s all added up a lot over time and I’m starting to lose a grip on myself. Hopefully he’s not repressing himself and will suffer over time or maybe he just has a kink and I’m glad he’s exploring that at least.
I’m deathly scared of coming out to him and how it will change our dynamic. I know he’ll be ok with it but he does make a lot of “that’s gay” jokes with our friends which is a little juvenile and makes me feel a gut punch every time. He knows it’s a bad joke too and apologizes sometimes.
I’m just lucky to have him in my life and can’t believe how easy it is to spend so much time with someone. We have a ton in common and never argue or have a bad time. It would be amazing if I could spend the rest of my life with him and I keep holding out that maybe he would feel the same way and now my mind has gotten even more crazy with knowing what porn he looks at. Hopefully I’ll get an answer soon if I can muster the courage to come out to him but until then I guess I’m holding it in and crossing my fingers I don’t explode.
Has anyone gone this route in realizing they’re gay or bisexual or know someone who has? Or am I just grasping at straws?
TL;DR: I found out my best friend who I’m in love with looks at transgender porn. Not sure if he’s gay/bisexual as he has told me he is straight in the past. However, some of his actions contradict this. I’ve never told him my sexuality or feelings as I’m scared it will ruin our friendship.

2023.03.21 17:04 Dunglebungus Collegiate League of Legends East Conference Top 8 Primer

I’m back again, this time covering the top eight in the other region I already posted a write-up on, the East conference. As a reminder, due to recent reallocations of points in the conference rankings, the East conference is falling from three guaranteed College Championship berths to two.
As a reminder, if you’d like to read up on any other conferences or the format of the collegiate League of Legends scene, feel free to take at look at my previous posts.

Match 1

Without further ado, we can start with the favorites I identified in my earlier post, University of Toronto (A1), taking on fellow powerhouse Harrisburg University (B2). Both teams qualified for the College Championship last year, but one of them will go home early this year. Technically, the loser of this match could be voted in to a committee spot if they fall this week, but with at a minimum two teams placing ahead of them within their own conference, it will certainly be an uphill battle.
The place to watch for this matchup will be the bot lane, where Toronto’s adc hooing leads the conference in kills with lane partner Snow2, who plays support for one of the top amateur teams. On the side of Harrisburg is adc Maykel and support Barlo who sport some of the lowest deaths and highest KDAs in the conference. In Harrisburg’s only loss this season their bottom lane was shut down hard, and if Toronto is able to do the same they should be able to come out with the win, but Toronto also struggled against the much weaker Maryland, dropping a game and nearly losing a second to a scaled Aurelion Sol. Regardless, both teams cleanly swept their ro16 matchup and have the momentum going into the playoffs. If you want to tune in to any collegiate game this weekend, it should be this one.

Match 2

Our second match is between Temple University (C2) and The University of Waterloo (D1). This matchup is a competition between a legacy powerhouse program and an upstart competitor. Waterloo has qualified for playoffs every year of CLOL’s existence, but has only made the College Championship once, in 2019, where they made the top 8. Waterloo’s distinguishing feature this year has been its blisteringly fast average win time, at 23:49, almost five minutes faster than comparative teams in the conference. Additionally, Waterloo won the highest bracket of the CLOL Fall Warmup.
On the other hand, Temple is coming in as both a lower seed, and the only program remaining that has never even been to a conference playoff. Temple also lost to Boston University during the regular season, a team that failed to qualify for playoffs despite a high preseason seed. Like many teams, Temple tends to play through bot lane and tend to play bloody, with their adc vlone having the highest gold per minute of any player and support abyssalwhip2 having the highest vision score per minute. Of course, these stats are also hallmarks of long, close games. If Temple wants to complete the upset, they’ll need to drag Waterloo down to playing their style and beat them with experience.

Match 3

Yes, a school named Western University (B1), is in the East Conference, where they take on University of Toronto Mississauga (D2). Fortunately for Western, they’re good enough for me to look past their unfortunate naming scheme. Unfortunately for Toronto Mississauga, Western is also likely the best team in the conference. Western’s only loss this year was a forfeit to Boston College, presumably due to scheduling conflicts. Western also holds undoubtably the best win over anyone in this conference, with a 2-1 regular season victory over Harrisburg. Throughout the regular season, Western played standard front to back team comps, with tanks top and scaling bot lanes, but completely through that formula out of the window in their first round of playoffs, with carries top all three games and Senna bot lanes twice. However, the shift worked fantastically, with the best of five being shorter than G2’s demolition of TL at MSI a few years ago and no game lasting longer than 22 minutes. For Toronto Mississauga to have a chance, they should focus on shutting down Western’s star adc links, who played for AOE Gold this past season in NACL.

Match 4

Our final playoff match features New York University (C1) and McMaster University (D3). While neither of these teams have ever qualified for a College Championship, McMaster came close in previous years, being the first team out from the East last year, while NYU lost in the play-in round the same year. NYU is almost certainly the weakest of the one seeds, while McMaster is much better than their three seed would indicate, making this a potentially very close match. NYU dropped individual games to three separate teams that didn’t make playoffs from their group, and is the only one seed to have dropped a series. However, they did handily dispatch their quarterfinal opponent in a dominant 3-0.
On the other hand, McMaster is a team that seems to play to the level of their opponent. They managed to take a game in both series they lost in the regular season, meaning the top three teams in their group were very close. However, they also dropped games to three teams seeded below them. This matchup should be as close to a toss-up as possible for a 1-3 seed game, which both teams need to win to keep their hopes for the college championship alive.

2023.03.21 17:02 YeeterusDeleterus Reconciliation failed - let's be friends again

So, as some may have seen I was to have a talk with my WP about how we can proceed with the reconciliation stuff, what boundaries to establish and all that.
Short story is, after a week of him really giving it his best effort to give me what I need and myself doing the best I could to let feelings come back, it just wasn't happening. When I look at him, I don't get the feeling of love that you have for a romantic partner. I still love him as a person because before we got together, he was an amazing friend and aside from the cheating, he always treated me well and was a dedicated partner. We sat down and both were sad about the possible future we lost as a couple but happily agreed that we would be better off as friends.
I feel like a weight has been lifted. No pressure that is HAS to work because it otherwise would be a second failure. No anxiety anymore about where he is or who he is with. No weird limbo of "what's okay and what's not, what to say and what not". No walking on eggshells. No need to check his phone / laptop, no annoying inner voice that tells me to go berserk anytime he gets a notification. We now live together as friends / roommates until he finds a place for himself and can move out. Rules are in place, agreements have been made and I feel like this was actually the best possible outcome. Besides getting back together obviously.
This way not only he is saving money and has only half the chores but I do too... and now that I can do whatever I want without taking any partner's opinions / feelings into consideration, there are some things I look forward to do :D
So, lesson for me and maybe some people out there: even if the reconciliation fails, it doesn't mean you failed. It just means that it wasn't meant to be and that's okay and sometimes better than if it would've "worked out by all means necessary" :)

2023.03.21 17:00 Wine_Dark_Sea_1239 I own an abandoned motel and I’m ready to meet my doom

[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] [Part 4] [Part 5] [Part 6] [Part 7] [Part 8] [Part 9] [Part 10] [Part 11] [Part 12] [Part 13]
When my screams subsided, malevolent laughter filled the uneasy silence. Discordant, cruel laughter that sounded as though it bubbled from underwater. I turned around to see the macabre faces of the Kane sisters behind me, pressed against the window of their cottage, black teeth chattering.
“Where did they take him?” I demanded. My anger increased their delight.
“Where did they take him?” Margery mocked, my own voice coming out of her blackened mouth.
“Poor, poor girl lost her puppy!” Margaretta cackled.
I felt the rage rise within me, but I was utterly helpless. I knew they had the information we needed, but even if they were willing to speak, they could not be trusted.
Suddenly, their faces changed. Their dead white eyes widened in terror; their smiles had melted. Mina shrieked, a cacophonous cry that sent my hands to my ears.
It was René. Their eyes were fixed on him. His very presence caused them to tremble in fear.
“What is he doing here?” Margery hissed.
“Come back to hurt us again, he has!” Mina shrieked.
“Devil take you, vampire!” Margaretta cried.
I looked at René in astonishment. He wore an expression I had not seen before, a smile that was almost cruel.
“Well if it isn’t the old charlatan sisters!” He said. “I would have never guessed that she would still be keeping you around, but then again, she’s always loved the most pathetic of sycophants.”
“Be gone, vampire! Be gone!” They shouted.
“I would love nothing more. But you heard Nora. You have information we need. Where did they take the werewolf?”
Margery turned to me.
“Stay away from him, girl! Stay away!”
“He hurt us! He hurt us!” Mina moaned.
“How about we make a deal?” I said, thinking quickly. The sisters cocked their terrible heads in curiosity. “You can tell me your story. Tell me what he did. But in return, you must tell us where they took our friend.”
René raised his eyebrows, but did not protest.
“And I will know when you are lying,” he added menacingly.
The sisters looked at each other and began to nod eagerly.
“The girl says she will listen!” They whispered excitedly. I felt a pang of pity.
“Do you agree?”
“Yes,” they hissed, the glee returning to their voices. The door to the cottage opened.
I stepped inside with René close behind me. The sisters glared at him.
“Whatever you’re going to do, do it without drawing blood this time.” I said, remembering the claw marks in my wrists.
“No appreciation for the fine art of channeling,” muttered Margaretta.
The sisters gestured to the chairs at the table. René and I sat, but I kept my arms tightly crossed. The sisters closed their eyes and moved from side to side rhythmically, putting themselves into a trance. They moaned and their mouths opened, emitting a thick, ectoplasmic mist.
“Gross,” I whispered to René, who smirked in response.
The mist enveloped us and our ramshackle surroundings, along with the sisters, vanished. In their place appeared a mid-19th century parlor: a finely carved mantle draped in black crepe, the ornamental mirror on top covered with black cloth. It was night, the heavy damask curtains were drawn, elegant oil lamps were lit on a large oak table, also draped in black. The sisters sat at the table, very much alive, dressed in ostentatious displays of mourning, their wide skirts spread across the chairs they sat in, jet bracelets clattering at their wrists. Human hands wreathed by delicate lace grabbed those of an older man who trembled with emotion.
A small audience observed the séance, dressed for an evening’s entertainment. There was one man in particular, whose clothing was undoubtedly the finest, with a dazzling silver jacquard waistcoat. Though he wore a pair of blue tinted spectacles, I immediately recognized him as René. His brown hair was longer, combed away from his face and curling just under his ears. He was smiling, that same strange smile I had seen before.
The sisters made their usual dramatic entreaties to the Great Beyond and the crowd gasped when the spirits responded intelligently to their questions with a series of rapping sounds. The man begged them to contact the spirit of his young daughter who had perished in a carriage accident decades before. The sisters obliged, making contact through the rapping. With a flourish, Mina threw her head back and out of her mouth squeaked the voice of a small child. The man collapsed in tears. Women in the audience dabbed their eyes with their handkerchiefs. René was no longer smiling.
When the audience had shuffled out, René lingered. Margaretta gave him an unctuous grin.
“How may we assist you, sir?”
“I would like to schedule a…private appointment.” He lowered his glasses and fixed his grey eyes on her. Margaretta’s eyes widened. She stared vacantly as though in a daze.
“We are entirely booked. We are in such demand, after all. We leave Rochester for our world tour this Saturday.” Margery said. Mina peered at René over her sister’s arm and smiled. He winked at her.
“Such lovely ladies you are. Money should be no issue, of course. I think you will find that you are free tomorrow evening” he said slowly. Margaretta nodded.
“Yes, yes. We are.”
“Very good. I very much look forward to our session.”
“Yes!” Shouted Mina, clearly enamored.
René smiled and put on his top hat, taking his leave.
The next night, the sisters eagerly awaited their guest. René arrived with a veiled woman on his arm, wearing lace gloves, matching the sisters in a black silk gown. Mina looked slightly disappointed to see the woman, but the other sisters grinned at her obvious finery, expecting a hefty sum for their services.
“Ladies, I hope you do not mind I have brought my wife,” he said, almost unable to hide the sinister grin that crept across his face.
“Of course, of course, welcome, madam!”
The veiled woman made no response. René escorted her to the table and they joined hands. The sisters began their show: the room erupted in rapping.
“The spirits are many in the ether tonight,” Margery moaned. “To whom do you wish to speak?”
“I wish to contact the spirit of our deceased child.” René said, watching the sisters carefully.
“Ah yes, it is a child who has appeared before me now, a beautiful child!” Margaretta cried. “Child, rap twice for yes, or once for no. Are these your beloved parents before you?”
Two distinct raps were heard on the table. Mina made an exaggerated gasp.
“The child wishes to speak through my sister!” Margery shouted.
Mina began to speak in that same squeaking voice as the previous evening. René could no longer contain his fury. With one swift movement René rose and flipped over the table before them. He grabbed Mina by the neck.
“I have no child, you insidious swindlers!” He shouted. He dug his fangs into Mina’s neck and the sisters began to scream. The witch stood and removed her veil, green eyes glowing, black teeth grinning. She raised her hand and the remaining two sisters rose into the air. René threw the corpse of Mina at their feet. They sobbed hideously, begging the witch for mercy.
“I have no use for such talentless fools,” she said.
“We will do anything, we will be your most faithful servants,” they cried still suspended in the air.
“Ask them how much money they’ve bled from the grieving, how they’ve bankrupted their victims in the name of their lost loved ones!” René said, enraged, fangs bared. “Let me finish with them!”
The witch sighed. “Forgive my friend with his tedious sense of justice. Would you really do anything? Bind yourselves to me for all time?”
“Yes! Yes!” Margery and Margaretta cried.
“Idiots,” René muttered.
The witch curled her hand into a fist and the women began to cough, hands clawing at their necks. Their eyes rolled in the back of their heads. The body of Mina rose to join them. With a sickening snap, the necks of Margery and Margaretta broke and they joined their sister in death. The corpses’ mouths opened, so wide the jaws were broken and three familiar specters climbed out. The ghosts fell at the feet of the witch, making obsequies, hailing her their mistress.
The mist that had descended around the cottage dispersed, leaving the sisters glaring at us.
“Time to fulfill your end of the bargain,” René demanded. “We don’t have much time.”
They chittered angrily and turned their ghoulish heads to me.
“Girl! Have you nothing to say of the crimes of your beau?”
What I had seen had certainly shocked me, but it was something I could not bear to process at the moment.
“He’s right. Show us where they took Jake.”
“No lies.” René warned.
The sisters grumbled among themselves, but once again broke into a trance. A vision appeared before us. It was the river, a great gray mist hanging over it. A large, shadowy structure pushed its way through, revealing the towers of an elaborate stone castle. The castle was familiar to me. Around here, we call it Bellevue Castle, an abandoned Gilded Age flight of fancy on a private island that is now our most famous tourist site. During the winter months, it is closed to guests, leaving the island abandoned. The vision dissolved into smoke.
René stood up to leave.
“You’ll never reach him before dawn,” hissed Margery.
“Yes, yes, the sun is rising, revenant!” Margaretta cackled.
He ignored them. I followed him out, feeling their hateful stares at my back, leaving them to howl and complain among themselves. They had not been lying. The sky had lightened considerably, a thin line of orange had appeared on the horizon. René cursed and shielded his face.
“Let’s get to my cottage,” I said. We arrived just as I began to feel the sun behind me. René had bolted for the dark bedroom. I found him sitting on the bed, his face in his hands, shoulders tense with frustration. I was frustrated too. We’d been outmaneuvered and I feared for Jake’s safety. Would she make him the object of her retaliation? I was certain of it. But there was no way I could sail for the castle without René. I may have a death warrant, but I do not have a death wish.
“We leave as soon as the sun sets tonight,” he said, as though convincing himself.
“I don’t think we have a choice,” I said.
“Not if we want to find Jake.”
“Do you think…do you think we’ll be too late?” I didn’t want to contemplate it.
“I do not think she would kill him without us there to witness it. She wouldn’t deprive herself of the spectacle. We have to understand that she is anticipating exactly what we are planning on doing.”
“This is it then,” I said, trying to sound strong, though I felt like a fist were gripping my heart. René lifted his head and took my hands.
“I won’t let it happen,” he said. “I swear to you.”
“I don’t think that’s something you can promise, René.”
I pulled my hands back from his. It was hard to look at him, when Mina’s face flashed before me, eyes filled with terror just before he buried his fangs into her neck.
“I realize that you have not seen me feed before,” he said quietly.
“Feed? You make it sound so…casual.”
He raised my chin to his face, gray eyes resolute.
“I have spent many decades in utter misery, disgusted by myself, by what I am. That self-loathing is still with me and will be forever. But I cannot change the past and I cannot restore what I have lost. If I can channel this bloodlust, this propensity for violence, against those who have done evil, then perhaps through evil, I can accomplish something good, spare an innocent. This thought was the only thing that sustained me in that century of servitude by her side. This is something … something I hope you never have to understand.”
“I’m trying.”
“I know.”
“I’m going to take a shower.”
“If you return while I am at rest, remember—”
“You’ll look kinda dead. I know.”
He smiled sadly.
I was desperate for the warmth of the shower. The cold within me was not merely the effect of winter, but a numbness that I couldn’t shake. I tried to reach back to a couple months ago, before the sky had changed to that ghastly green, before the abyss opened before me. It was as though I were viewing another person’s life on a different planet. And yet the life I am living now does not seem like my own either. I am straddling the lives of two strangers.
I tried to imagine death. I tried to imagine not existing. Of course, I could not. Who can? I had to hope that there would be peace, that the spirits were not lying to comfort me. After all, I had already witnessed the existence of far more unlikely things.
The sound of the water soothed me. I stepped inside, relishing those first few drops, immersing my body, emptying my mind. The future didn’t matter. At that moment, I was alive and that was glorious.
I don’t know how long I had been standing there, when the water began to feel different. Thicker. Metallic tasting. I opened my eyes to find myself covered in blood, it was pouring out of the shower head. My skin began to burn, my hair falling out in clumps, my teeth loosening and I spat them out. I screamed.
I found myself on the floor of the shower, bruised but wet from water alone. My hands fluttered to my mouth, my hair. Nothing was amiss. I dragged myself upright, trying not to sob. She would take even those small moments away from me… I toweled off with trembling hands and allowed myself a brief glance in the mirror, too fearful of what might stare back if I lingered. Beyond some considerably dark rings under my eyes, I looked relatively normal.
Before, I had contemplated watching the full sunrise, sitting in the sunshine until eventually dozing on the couch. Instead, I went back to the dark bedroom and climbed under the covers of my bed. In my current state, my only comfort came in the form of the reanimated corpse next to me. I curled up beside him and fell asleep.
++
René woke me up at sunset. Despite everything, I actually felt well-rested and at ease. René prepared by downing a large thermos of blood. I secured my uncle’s knife under my coat in a leather belt sheath, my movements calm, almost mechanical. René handed me my silver bracelets and a wave of sadness passed through me.
“We don’t know what state he is in,” he whispered. I nodded and put them on my wrists.
We set sail in silence, the boat’s movements for once not triggering nausea. It was desperately cold on the water, despite the promise of spring in the near future. The cold struck through my gloves and burned my face. René was clearly not bothered by the climate; his coat wasn’t even zipped. He stared ahead with his brows furrowed, scanning all around us for ice and other enemies.
I thought of the summer and of the river crowded with life, with people laughing, speeding past each other on their boats, picnicking under the turrets of our destination, Bellevue Castle.
“Do you know the story of Bellevue Castle, René?” I asked.
“Manhattan hotelier wanted to build the grandest home in all of the Islands, but his wife died before it could be completed.”
“And in his grief, the husband asked all the workers to put down their tools and step away, leaving the castle a half-finished husk, a monument to lost love.” I added.
“I actually think he just ran out of money. I spent some time on that construction site in the 1890s.”
I laughed.
“Of course, you did. Don’t burst the bubble of anyone on the tourist board, alright? That place is a big money maker around here.”
It was good to smile with him, even if just for a moment.
As we neared the castle, a mist descended around us, just as in the vision of the sisters. The air felt heavy and old, as though rife with mildew and rot, difficult to inhale. The visibility severely decreased, but René was able to continue to navigate towards our destination, its hulking shadows barely detectible even by his eyes.
Our boat was hit by a wave, as though from the wake of a boat. René and I looked at each other, thinking the same thing: there was absolutely no one else on the river. A great creaking sound echoed all around us, the groaning of wood and metal. A veritable flotilla of ships and boats broke the surface all around us, arising from the depths glowing a ghostly green. There were wrecked wooden speed boats, steel-hulled freighters from the turn of the century, coal steamers, massive three-masted schooners, and frigates built for the wars of two hundred years ago.
No crew piloted these vessels, which groaned and sighed with the sadness of their years at the bottom. Something was weaving its way through the wrecks, howling through the air with the screeching of a cyclone. René leaned forward, craning his neck to spot it, when a rotting hand shot out of the water and grabbed his shoulder. He pulled it off, but another joined the attack, and another, until a great host of drowned, rotting corpses were pulling at him, threatening to board the boat.
I grabbed a paddle and whacked at them, but there were too many. They were pulling him overboard, despite our best efforts. I clutched his arm and with all my strength tried to drag him back in. The cacophony was approaching, my hair whipped around my face as the freezing winds accelerated. Something caught my boot and my grip on René’s hand slipped away. I was hurtled into the swirling air. I saw below me René’s struggling body dipping below the surface of the river, drowned dead glaring up at me lifelessly.
The whirlwind hummed with the cries of miserable souls. I was suspended among them, falling upwards and upwards until I could breathe no more.

2023.03.21 17:00 The_Red_Haiku I don't know how to help my husband heal after ex-best friend attacked us

*I wrote this draft a week ago but was too exhausted to completely finish/post it. Writing it is honestly exhausting. It’s been a horrible week with multiple bad things happening. I may need to make a second post about a separate incident in upcoming week.
My (32F) husband (36M) came home from work crying tonight. He’ll do this a few times a year. I have so much guilt over this situation and mixed emotions.
TLDR: My husband’s best friend attacked both of us 5 years ago because we decided to get back together after a big breakup. His friend was so upset, he tried to get me fired from my job and kicked out of my doctorate program. Illegally kicked my husband out of their mutually-owned company. Wanted us to “let it go”, and is confused why we want accountability. Makes a Facebook post about us… monthly, for the past 5 years…. At age 37… My husband is still confused and hurt.
In 2018 (so almost 5 years ago) we got in a fight with my husband’s best friend (his current age 37M)… now ex best friend. They have not been friends since. They got in a fight over my husband and I getting back together after we broke up. Even though it’s been 5 years, it still hurts and bothers my husband. He wants accountability from the ex best friend to mend the friendship… but he refuses.
In 2018 my husband and I were not yet married. Our wedding was scheduled the end of that year. Basically, I was going through a lot and was doubting if we should get married. We were fighting a lot. At the time I didn’t realize my husband’s best friend was actually causing a lot of the fights we were having. My husband would vent to him about our issues and take his friend’s advice.
To be fair to the ex best friend, I get it. I had depression and was not always the nicest and mentally present. I would be online/my phone all the time. We had a 2-year-old daughter in 2018. I have had depression ever since she was born… and unfortunately I realized recently most of my life. It got worse when she was born.
My now-husband and I started dating in 2013. We had a baby before we were married. She was an accident. We love her… but I was not ready to be a mom. I was 24 when we found out we were pregnant. I was devastated. We had only been dating a year and a half.
Props to my now-husband. He let me decide if we should keep the baby and said he’d support whatever decision I made. He’d be there. And he was.
Before we found out we were pregnant he was unhappy with our relationship. I found out later he was considering breaking up with me. When he found out I was pregnant, he decided to stick it through. (This detail is important later…)
Honestly bawling like a fucking baby writing this right now. I did not deserve any of the nice things my now-husband did/has done for me.
I didn’t know at the time, but his best friend told him he was making the biggest mistake of his life. He told him to go and convince me to get the abortion. My now-husband refused.
To be fair to the best friend, I would have been nervous for my friend in this situation.
It’s 2016. I’m an “okay” mom… and that’s being generous. My husband does 80% of the parenting and work. I just graduated nursing school and have my first job in surgery. I come home and cry at least once a week. I feel stupid all the time. The surgeons are cruel. The OR nurses are mean. I work 6 shifts a week with a newborn. (5 normal, one trauma/call shift). The baby nurses and cries all night. Im not sleeping, and I’m on a medication for post-partum depression. I’m very anxious. I feel like my youth is gone. I become obsessed with Facebook and Instagram. It makes me feel good to post like I have this perfect life and am happy. I get into writing and am constantly writing online. Having all these followers and feedback is the only thing I care about and the only thing that makes me feel good.
My husband manages a bar. He works all night, gets up with the baby because I’m always too tired, then watches her while I’m at work. Never complains. He barely sleeps.
I have a breakdown at work a year later and quit. We move back to our hometown to get help from family with the baby. I also get another job in surgery at the hospital.
We get engaged and schedule the wedding for 2018. We were fighting a lot. My now-husband says I’m always on my phone. I’m missing out on our daughter’s childhood. I was worried about finances and affording the wedding.
I was doubting if we should get married.
I decide to call off the wedding. It’s a few months away, and I’m not ready. None of our stuff is in order. I need more time.
I didn’t know at the time, but my now-husband is heartbroken and starts venting to his best friend. The friend tells him to give me an ultimatum and that I’m “unwell”.
My husband comes home and we get in a fight. He gets upset, and out of anger tells me we wouldn’t be together if it weren’t for the baby. He was going to break up with me. I get so upset I tell him then we shouldn’t be together. Despite him crying and telling me he loves me… and things have changed since then, I break up with him.
I spend the next year single and I do go on a few dates. We split custody of our daughter equally. She’s two. She’s very confused and emotional. She doesn’t understand. But knows something isn’t right. My now-husband is roommates with his best friend and another friend. He’s very depressed and has lost a lot of weight from the break up. Understandably, his friends hate my guts. My now-husband sends me a text a few times a month telling me he still loves me and he misses me. I ignore half of them.
The best friend keeps trying to talk to my friends and sister about me. They tell me it’s making them uncomfortable. He obsessive with me and constantly wants to talk to them about how I’m “unwell”. They tell him to stop asking about me.
(Side note: the friend was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5. He has been on multiple stimulants the past 30 years. He always exaggerates things, and takes things too far. He post 10-15 posts a day on Facebook. Many about his opinions/life story… and memes. It’s just odd for a 37-year-old man.
He’s only had one girlfriend… ever. And the relationship lasted 4 months.)
Christmas 2018 is in a few days. It’s my now-husband’s week to have our daughter. I come home late, alone, after work.
I walk in and start sobbing… there are two custom-made frames my husband made with pictures of the day our baby was born. He got them professionally printed. I had never seen them.
The hospital had a professional photographer. We were really poor. So they only took a few photos of our baby and gave us a digital copy. I kept saying I’d go print them… but was so exhausted and depressed I never got around to it. I was too in love with my phone to do anything else than be online in my free time. After two years, I had forgotten all about them.
I cried all night. It’s like I had forgotten everything he had ever done for me. How kind and patient he was. How he could have left me alone to raise the baby. But he stuck with me. Even after how horrible I was. And I took him for granted and threw our relationship away over one fight. How he had basically raised our baby completely alone since she was born while I loved my phone more than I loved my family.
I showed up at his apartment the next day crying. I told him I was sorry and to please give me another chance. I didn’t deserve one, but I was so very sorry for breaking his heart and putting our daughter through everything she’d been through the last year.
He’s cautious, but tells me we could talk about the possibility of giving our relationship another try.
The best friend is absolutely against this idea. He sends me a message asking if we could meet up and talk. I agree.
(Important to note: before the break up, the best friend shot himself in the leg… he keeps all his guns loaded so they’re ready to use when he “needs” them… he’s had multiple surgeries and is on lots of meds because of this… he brags a lot online how he shot himself in the leg…)
We meet up at a bar. I was only there 20 minutes before I walk out. He tells me I am “not well” and there is a lot of things wrong with me. I need professional “help”.
When I ask what he means, he tells me I don’t see reality. He gives me examples of all these times I lied or made things up. I try to explain these “situations” where I “lied” (example: I told everyone I took my nursing exam once… but I actually took it 3 times… because I was embarrassed)…
I keep my cool, but the whole interaction is bizarre. He tells me I remind him of Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “Shutter Island”… where he can’t see reality because he’s schizophrenic.
I tell him that all these things he’s saying about me people think about him: he exaggerates, he’s obsessive, his friends talk behind his back, he’s not well…
He starts shaking and tells me I’m gaslighting him! This is exactly what he’s talking about! I’m crazy… and he’s not falling for it.
The bartender comes over and asks if I’m okay… (the best friend was yelling and waving his hands around causing a scene, and the bartender wanted to make sure I wasn’t in danger…).
I’m fed up. I tell the friend I don’t agree with what he’s saying about me and we are done talking. I leave the bar.
He sends me this long text… telling me he’s shaking he’s so scared from what just happened. I’m so far gone from reality and I need help….
I’m not dealing with this shit. I just reply “goodnight”.
I get a call from my now-husband the next morning. His friend came home last night and walked in his room while he was sleeping and woke him up. He was shaking and talking really fast and trying to explain to him he had proof I was “crazy”. (He’s pretty sure he was drunk…)
My now-husband got mad and told him he didn’t want to hear any of this and went back to sleep.
The following morning the best friend called and confronted him and told him he wasn’t dealing with this. It was either him or me. He couldn’t have both.
My now-husband said he could not believe he was acting like this. We had a child together. He could not just cut complete contact with me.
The best friend told him, “It’s not my fault you put a load in crazy…” (Which is a huge insult against our daughter).
My now-husband is a very patient man. But he absolutely lost it. Since this was over the phone, and he was driving, he said he had to pull over. He was so furious he was shaking. He told him he’d beat the shit out of him if he got back to the apartment and he was there. And I was his family. So he was always going to choose me.
The best friend freaks out and is afraid. He calls up his parents and the church group we were all apart of. He says my now-husband has “gone crazy” and “threatened to kill him.” (Which is a lie).
The church group comes to the apartment and helps him move all of his stuff out in a few hours… so he can feel “safe”.
My now-husband isn’t aware of any of this. He avoided going home to “cool-down”. When he got there, he said the friend had placed a “loaded gun” in the window by the front door as a “warning” to my husband. The church group was just finishing up moving things out.
(Side note: if you think this is bizarre, it only gets much, much worse from here…)
A bunch of events ensue after this.
The friend’s mother tells my now-mother-in-law that I am on “uppers” and am “not safe to be practicing as a nurse” and “the public should be warned.” She also tells her I was taking “uppers” when I was pregnant with my daughter and “am high at work.”
Of course, my mother-in-law is upset. The friend’s mom is one of her best friends and of course she believes her. She confronts her son (my now-husband) and he tells her that is absolutely not true.
I am very upset when I am told this. The friend’s mom also tells our church group the same thing. I am so ashamed and embarrassed. I never go back to this church… and screw religion.
My mother-in-law tells us the friend’s mother is threatening to report me to the hospital. I’m extremely upset by this. I ask where this is coming from.
My now husband confronts the friend. He says that in 2013 he gave me one of his Adderall pills. And he has proof in a text message my husband sent asking him for one. (Reminder… this story currently takes place in 2018… almost 2019).
This upsets me so much. I did take one the friend’s Adderall pills in the past to finish a project in college. I had taken some before in the past for the same reason. He gave out his Adderrall a lot… not just to me. Sometimes, he’d just offer it to people.
But I wasn’t addicted to drugs… I wasn’t even a nurse yet or pregnant. I was still in college. I had also never been to work when I was “high”. What the hell did this have to do with anything/the current situation?
I had no idea what the hospital was going to think of this. I also started college again that year because I was working on my doctorate and master’s degree. What was the doctorate program going to think?
I went into my boss’ office the next day crying. It was so embarrassing… I told her what had happened. She told me to immediately go to HR and be honest and tell them the current situation.
HR manager told me they could not say yes or not if someone had called in and complained about me… (which means, either the friend or his mother did call). I told them I would take a drug test immediately, if that is what they wanted. I was not on drugs.
She told me that was not necessary. She thought it was odd and it seemed vindictive. She had already talked to my boss and a few of the surgeons. She said they all said I was “a good nurse” and none of them ever thought “I was high or unsafe at work.” She said that’s all she needed. She told me I should call the college ASAP, and make a report I’m being blackmailed.
I called campus and made a report. The Doctorate of Nursing Program said since I’m drug tested quarterly, that is also all they needed from me. They were sorry this was happening.
I was so relieved.
However, we get a call from my now-husband’s sister. The best friend’s family was threatening her job… because he heard that in the past, she was someone who had also taken his Adderall. She was absolutely furious… she did not work in healthcare. We had “never done drugs together.”
The friend and his family were literally doing anything they could to hurt me and my now-husband’s family. They were using the excuse that they were “being good Christians” as to why they were bringing this all up. All these things were things we had done only a few times in the past.
My now-husband owned a small “company” with this friend and few other buddies. It was a side-gig, but my husband put a lot of work into it and was proud of it.
The best friend and his mother texts him and says he’s been “voted” out of the company. When asked why, they say him getting back together with me is a “liability”. My now-husband is devastated. I tell him I’m pretty sure this isn’t “legal”. He decides to sign the paperwork to dissolve his partnership and give up his shares in this company.
My husband cries off and on a lot the next 6 months. This was his best friend since he was 2. A 30-year plus friendship is gone. His friend’s family was like a second family to him.
My mother-in-law mentions that the friend’s mother has thought about it and “feels bad”. We tell her if they feel bad, they need to talk to us. This is insane how this has become what it has.
Around this time as well (6 months after the fight), the friend sends us a group text (me and my husband) apologizing. Saying he was “on a lot of drugs” for his gunshot injury. They made him “act different”. Then sends a meme he thinks is funny.
Hell-fucking-no.
I reply that if he’s actually sorry, talk to us in person. Like a fucking man. He’s not sorry. He wants an easy way out of this. The medications he was taking are just an excuse. He’s always been this way and lashes out as aggressively as he can when his feelings are hurt. He’s done things like this in the past to other people… just not this extreme. (It was a long reply.. but that’s the gist).
Over the next almost 5 years, he posts vaguely about this situation almost monthly on all his social medias. They were public, so I would read them and fume. Sometimes he puts some Bible quotes with it, justifying his new theory as to what happened and what “mentally healthy people do”. Other times he’s scathing mad and was “wronged”. Other times we’re “narcissists”. After a few years of this shit, I just stopped reading it… it was too taxing on my mental health. What a child. I’m being childish playing along. I know he wants us to see them. He also tells our mutual friends every chance he gets about how he was wronged and we’re not well. Our friends believed it at first… then slowly realized it didn’t make sense. We’ve asked them not to talk to us about him.
The past 5 years he’s randomly reached out to my husband through text… apologizing. Saying he misses him. Sends him random memes pretending like everything is fine. But he refuses to sit down and talk with us.
My husband says he’ll forgive him if he apologizes to me. He went too far. He refuses… then says he will… then refuses. Never does.
I realize I’m never getting an apology. I’m fine with him never ever being back in my life or our family’s. Plus, he’s unstable and dangerous. I don’t want him near my daughter.
It took awhile, but a few months ago I was able to silently forgive him… only took me 4 years.
But my husband is still so hurt. Of course he is. They were friends 30 years. He wants accountability. But I don’t think he is capable of giving that to my husband.
I’ve contemplated writing his family a letter. Telling them all the hurt they’ve caused my husband. But I don’t know if it’s a good idea. I don’t know if it will do any good.
I screwed up. I should have never taken those Adderall pills. That is my fault. But this picture he’s painted of me is extremely exaggerated.
I don’t know what to do to help my husband heal. I also feel crazy telling anyone this story. I’ve never dealt with a person like this.
