2023.03.21 19:09 pockypro Tuition Discount?

Hello everyone! 🦉
Earlier today I received a call from WGU Academy about moving forward with my BS degree and that they're running a 50% off tuition special. I would be a new student so I'm wondering if this is just to try and get me to call and start my session now or if it's truly half off tuition.
Have any of you heard this?

2023.03.21 18:48 HQHyperbolic Grand Opening - The Only Thing I've Ever Known But Real Life Subreddit

Thank you for your patience. Currently looking to up the Mod count of this Subreddit (Including me, myself, and I) from 1, to say, 3. Current Mods I am looking for are: Circlejerk Expert Emoji Lang Expert Flair Color Nominator Someone who can work 'a night shift' (10:00 P.M. ~ 1:00 A.M. EST; 1:00 A.M ~ 4:00 A.M. EST; or 4:00 A.M. ~ 7:00 A.M. EST) Also, the following is first-come-first-serve: I am looking for someone to create a 10-Tone-Equal-Temperament Theme Song for this Subreddit. You and anyone working on the musical piece will optionally get a User Flair (Up to 10 for a simple piece, up to 50 for an orchestral piece.), purely for decoration of course. And ownership of the music theme in question. (Yes, you can post this in r slash ChoosingBeg or r slash ChoosingBegCircleJerk if you /really/ want to. No one is forcing anyone to make a theme song for this Subreddit.) I know it sounds weird having a theme song for this Subreddit when it references to some degree a musical number or a gaming scene, but there you go.
Any mod that wants the ability to tell me what the Primary Topic of this Subreddit should be (within reason) will automatically get the "Flair Speedrunner" User Flair from me should they join this subreddit; as a reward and as ornamental, semiornamental, or otherwise payment.
Anyone willing to host the 10-Tone-Equal-Temperament Jam here, use the proper Post Flair.
Also, for anyone who doesn't like rules 1-5 because TL;DR when together, rule 6 is the important one, so just don't break that one (And follow Reddit's rules too, obviously).

2023.03.21 18:25 maximusaemilius H1: "Uhh.... hi Mom, hi dad, do you remember that diplomatic mission with the new alien species i was sent to right? There might be a sliight pregnancy problem now." H2: "Goddammit Adam, please tell me you havent impregnated an alien female..." H1: "Yeah about that..."

"So, you're telling me we found another sapient omnivore species?"
The commander grunted, ripping his boot from a watery patch of mud and nearly crashing into the swampy water between two twisted tree roots.
Sunny reached out with one of her four armored arms and caught him by the back of his pack, pulling him upright.
He nodded a thanks to her and adjusted his gear.
Behind her Ramirez ducked under a low hanging branch, slogging through a pool of knee-high water, adjusting the containment pod, holding Krill more comfortably over both shoulders.
Krill, comfortable and warm inside his containment pod, watched the marines, scientists, and a linguist struggle through the mud under a covering of impossibly tall, twisted trees, their canopy blocking out all light that might have dared cut downwards towards the watery floor below.
"Not entirely sapient, I suppose."
Krill answered,
"Unfortunately the way in which they communicate is going to drastically reduce their ability to create complex structures and perform mathematical equations."
Together they maneuvered themselves over a root, which at some point in the distant past, had decided to grow upwards instead of down. At about four feet high, it had changed its mind and arched back down into the water. Perhaps it had been smaller then, but at four feet wide, the root was an absolute monstrosity now.
The trees themselves were massive, challenging, and sometimes outgrowing the legendary redwood forests of the western Americas, but unlike the redwoods, these trees didn't stand tall and proud. Instead, they chose a twisted path much like the branching veins which made up a human vascular system. They twisted and undulated, interlocking past each other with branches that were well over two feet wide in many cases, and stretching to over four feet wide in others.
No one direction was good enough, and the trees twisted, ducked swirled and reached, grasping for any sort of light to be found.
On top of the darkness cast by the trees and the soggy nature of the forest floor, it was also horribly hot and humid, giving the impression of a microwaved wet blanket thrown over the world. Where heat from the upper canopy met the cooler air of deep forest pools, it created a perpetually thick mist which writhed and undulated through the trees, leaving only the shadowy impressions of twisted trunks and clawing branches past distances greater than 50 feet (15m).
"They communicate primarily through pheromones and heat modulation. From what I understand, the language in itself isn't precise, and really only works in generalities and feelings than it does in absolutes."
Commander Vir kicked a rotting log out of the way, ducking as a massive green bug buzzed over his head and into the fog.
Turns out the hotter and more humid a planet gets, the bigger the bugs get,
"But we were still able to communicate with them?”
Krill nodded from inside his case,
"Yes, generally speaking. For a species that cannot communicate in absolutes, I hear they are quite reasonable. They seem willing to accept our friendship, and have..... invited, I guess, us to participate in some sort of primitive ritual."
Vir perked up, flashing a bright smile.
“Reasonable? Peaceful? Rituals? And definitely CANNOT communicate in ABSOLUTES!? Am I the only one who thinks that sounds familiar?”
Sunny sighed,
“No Adam I am reasonably sure that they are not Jedis…”
“C’mon, that would be so cool! Like lightsabers, the force and stuff… maybe they look like tiny Yodas? I mean it fits, with the swamp, the speech impairment and all…”
He nearly fell over another root.
“Adam, focus. We have a mission here.”
The commander nodded, scrambling over another tree branch,
"Alright, so... where are these things anyway? How do they look?"
His boots hit solid ground, covered in some sort of wet spongy fungus and he glanced down at his GPS.
“Considering they talk by smell, my bet is on Elephants with giant human noses. What do you think Mav?”
Ramirez turned around to look at Maverick, who had stopped walking.
“…”
“Mav?”
“Giant… fucking spiders…”
“…”
Commander Vir was still looking at his GPS and no one else answered, so without looking up he broke the silence and said:
“Wow you are always so negative; it better not be, I want my space Yodas…”
“…”
“…”
More silence.
This time it was broken by Ramirez.
“Giant fucking spiders… with… Wolfheads!?”
The commander was still diddling around with the GPS in his hands.
“Oh not you too Ramirez, also that’s oddly specific, you always had a pretty cruel imagination. Ah there we go I think it’s that way.”
He said, looking up from his GPS to keep moving.
“…”
“…”
After some steps he realized no one was following him, so he stopped and turned around.
Behind him the other marines were dead silent, heads lifted towards the sky in shock.
"FUCK ME."
One of the marines whispered, scrambling back behind a tree root.
Commander Vir turned and nearly fell into the water again, eyes locked onto the creatures descending from high above.
They were huge, about the size of large horses, and horrifically spider like in their construction, or perhaps an ant. They had large-scale abdomens connected to a thinner thorax. All together they had ten appendages, three pairs of spider-like legs on the abdomen which, instead of ending in a pod or foot, ended in a sharp pointed spike. On the abdomen, they had two arm-like appendages, with too many joints and strange wavy tentacles instead of fingers.
The head was just as disconcerting.
It seemed too large for the body, grossly out of proportion and strangely out of place, like some cosmic sentience had used a random animal generator to assign parts to its body.
The head was wolflike, if you were to strip the skin and fur away, leaving only the muscle underneath. You could see the line of teeth running up either side of the muzzle, while the large red-pink ears rotated continuously.
Commander Vir had backed himself into the bowl of a tree eyes wide. Sunny slogged herself up from the water, placing herself between the strange spidery creatures and the human.
They didn't descend like a spider might, on threads of silk, but they used their back six feet, and the spikes on the end to dig into the bark of the trees with a disconcerting thud thud thud thud.
Finally the largest of the creatures reached the ground, surprisingly silent for its massive bulk.
Glancing around Sunnys tensed body, he noticed something he hadn't before, and that was a strange small mass gripping onto the spidery creature's underbelly. Upon closer inspection he counted ten legs and a surprisingly spidery head buried against its underside... a completely separate creature holding on to its companion.
Behind the largest creature, he noted ANOTHER type of creature. It boasted the same sort of structure as the large creature, but its abdomen was devoid of scales, and covered in strange black bulbs suctioned onto its body by way of a strange, sticky black-green webbing. Its head was also constructed differently more like a lizard than a wolf, with large bulbous eyes that could rotate behind its own head to look in all directions.
Commander Vir fiddled nervously with the advanced translation headset he wore, strapped to his helmet, supposedly it was supposed to be able to understand what these things were saying.
"Sky... friends."
The translation was somewhat garbled, but he understood it was the large wolf-head who spoke.
He walked forward, pushing Sunny gently to the side despite her clear reluctance,
"Yes, we are friends, and we are here to offer peace to you, and the assistance of the Galactic Assembly."
He wasn't entirely sure how that was going to translate over in smell, but the creature seemed happy lifting its head and gnashing its large canine teeth.
"Agreement... for a favor."
Commander Vir grew unsure then, letting off a reluctant,
"What favor?”
The spidery shape moved closer sniffing at him with its large wolffish nose. Sunny stiffened at his side, and he put a hand on her arm to calm her.
"Ritual... you watch and help."
"None of us will get hurt... will we?"
The creature stopped and pondered the question for a long moment,
"No danger... live... healthy... happy."
Commander Vir nodded slowly,
"Alright, what do we have to do?"
The creature hefted its large bulk, and turned in the opposite direction,
"Follow."
It commanded, scuttling off into the trees.
[…]
"This is very interesting."
Krill was saying to one of the accompanying scientists, who nodded vigorously in agreement.
"What's so interesting?”
Commander Vir whispered, from where he stood at the edge of yet another, but larger fungus covered clearing, watching as the creatures scuttled back and forth.
The scientist learned in in excitement,
"It seems that these creatures have a ternary gender system."
Before the commander could ask, the scientist continued,
"For ease of speech, the large ones are the females, and those things on their bellies are probably the males. The medium ones are the third gender, the 'they' if you will. It looks like the male impregnates the female who then attaches the eggs to the third party. Dr. Krill tells me that the third party have a very high heat signature, probably to incubate the young. Those attachments probably provide nutrients into the egg and may even transfer DNA over as well."
"Wow... freaky."
The commander muttered in fascination.
"Kind of gross if you ask me."
Sunny muttered.
"I'm with her. Its kinky, but too kinky for me…"
Ramirez muttered, receiving a few nods from the other marines.
"Oh please."
Krill whispered,
"I know what human reproduction is like, and it's arguable way worse."
The scientist waved them all off,
"The big one there, the one that's been talking to us. I think she's the queen, and judging from those egg sacks, this is probably mating season, if they have one."
"Creepy, but cool, I guess."
The captain muttered. They watched for a little longer as the queen scuttled around the clearing and then returned to look at them, lowering her meaty wolffish head to the commander's eye level.
"Ritual... find... eggkeeper."
She scuttled away.
"Oh... this is some sort of… Mating ritual maybe? To choose that third party you were talking about?”
"This isn't exactly the kind of "Mating ritual" I wanted to see."
Ramirez muttered. The other marines turned to look at him with raised eyebrows. Sunny stuck her tongue out in disgust.
Off in the clearing, some of the smaller females had moved themselves onto the high branches scuttling through the trees to examine the "they" who waited patiently. It appeared that side was very important in the ritual, as they all fought for the largest counterpart. Once found, the wolffish head would lower, and open up to reveal a tube under the tongue. From there she would... disgorge the egg onto the abdomen of the 'they' and the mucus would solidify to hold them on.
"It has to do with size."
Krill hissed,
"But it seems that it has more to do with heat. The big ones only get chosen more because they also happen to be warmer than the smaller ones. I'd say they incubate at an average of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so 32 degrees Celsius."
They watched this for a while, the scientists taking notes and the marines making inappropriate jokes.
Eventually most of the creatures had finished, leaving only the queen left over.
Everything went still when she began to move, and she scuttled around the clearing, looking over all the available 'theys' she could find, but she just didn't seem satisfied.
Commander Vir tugged at the collar of his jacket, a line of sweat dripping down his face.
She continued her circuit once and then twice; at some point she turned her head, large eyes locking on the humans.
She sniffed at them.
The human laughter died as she advanced.
"What is she doing?"
The commander muttered under his breath.
The scientist that stood next to him, hidden partially behind Sunny, answered
"I... I'm not sure."
She scuttled even closer, and the humans backed away.
"Hey doc... didn't you say something about... them being attracted to heat? And like the “they’s” being around 90 F/32 Celsius?”
Ramirez wondered, hiding himself behind a root.
"Yeah... I did, why?”
"Not to freak anyone out or anything but... isn't average human heat about 98.6 Fahrenheit… so 37 degrees Celsius?"
”FUCK!”
”OH NONONONONO!”
”HIIIIDE!”
”RUUUN!”
What followed was a rather violent game of nose goes, but instead of involving touching one’s nose to see who was the last person standing, it involved a mad rush to reduce body heat.
The smartest marines took the initiative and dove into the water beside the clearing, completely submerging themselves under the surface.
Others chose to cover whatever exposed skin they might have had in mud, as if to mask the heat.
Still others chose to cut and run.
Unfortunately, with his position at the head of the group, commander Vir wasn't fast enough.
She came at him in a scuttling rush, and in a frantic leap to get away, his boot caught on a root and he hit the ground hard.
Sunny tried to leap in front of him, but was bowled over by the mad rushing form.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!"
Commander Vir repeated, scuttling backwards across the ground, as the large spidery shape loomed over him.
He stopped dead in his tracks, backed against a tree root.
She leaned closer.
He raised his hands above his head blocking his face,
"Please don't lay your eggs in me. Please don't lay your eggs in me."
She reached out one of her forward hands, surprisingly delicate, as she cut through the first layers of his jacket, and shirt.
They fell away in slices revealing the pale human skin underneath red and sticky with the tropical heat.
His chest and abdomen heaved with his breath as he tried to scramble away, but she caught him with the prong of one of her back legs pinning him in place.
"Fuck... Help... HELP."
Sunny wasn't fast enough, having been tipped head over heels into the water, with the rest of the marines in similar positions, Krill contained inside his tube unable to help but also unable to look away.
She lowered her head, and the man screamed. It was cold, gelatinous and slimy at first, but even as it touched open air, he could feel it fusing against his skin solidifying. He thrashed and wriggled, but she was far too strong holding him in place.
Finally though, she backed away, leaving him panting on the ground shaking and trembling leg throbbing where he had been pinned.
She leaned her head down to examine him,
"Warm."
They locked eyes,
"Friends... now... Keep them... warm."
She retreated, and he struggled to his knees, turning to look down at his body which was now partially obscured by a sticky pod of six black eggs, pulled tight against his skin. His hands were shaking, as he reached down to touch them, cold and smooth.
He tried tugging on one, but nearly fainted at the pain it caused against his skin.
The creatures were withdrawing back into the trees, leaving him kneeling on the fungus, hands trembling as looked downwards.
Sunny was the first to recover, scrambling out of the water and over to him, placing a hand on his back as she examined the strange eggs attached to his skin,
"Mother of-"
The marines cut her off as they came wriggling from the trees,
"Commander, commander are you ok..."
One of the marines cut around front, frozen in his tracks, eyes wide once he saw,
"WHAT THE HELL!"
Sunny reached out as if to tug on one of them,
"NO!"
He snapped, jerking away from her.
The others gathered around to look with exclamations of shock and disgust.
The commander looked up at Sunny pleadingly.
She decided to take charge, helping him to his feet and then pulling him into her arms,
"We have to get him back to the ship, let's move, NOW!"
"What do you think, Dr."
Dr. Katie examined the scan with a frown,
"It's very, very strange, that's for sure."
Commander Vir lifted his head to look down at them,
"Well what the HELL does that mean?”
Krill shoved his head back onto the table,
"Stay still."
Dr. Katie hummed softly as she continued to examine the scans,
"It looks like these little filaments have breached the skin ... and.... well at least one of them has made it to your liver, this one here has made it to your lungs."
"What about white blood count?"
Krill wondered,
"The body must have noticed something by now?"
Dr Katie shook her head,
"Nothing, the body seems to have accepted it. I took some samples and... well I think I might know why."
She rolled herself to the side in her chair and over to one of the adjoining computers,
"See this, this is HIS DNA ...and this is the DNA of the strands."
Krill pearled over her shoulder,
"What the... they look almost identical."
"Yes... I don't think the body knows anything is wrong."
She turned her chair back around to look at the commander,
"Congratulations commander, you are perhaps, in the weirdest way possible, the only man in the history of existence who might just experience the miracle of life. You are going to be a dad!"
The look on his face made it clear he wasn't interested in being congratulated,
"What the actual fuck does that mean?"
He snapped, Dr. Katie rolled closer,
"Well, to explain in terms you may understand. You are doing more than keeping them warm. Those filaments that you saw are acting like umbilical cords. The one at your liver is using it as a filter, and to take in nutrients as it seems to have branching filaments to the stomach and intestines. The one going to your lungs is taking in carbon... not sure what that's going to do to your breathing if anything. But at this point I don't think that even Dr. Krill, as good as he is, can remove them. We would have to remove too much of your internal structure to it to be viable, plus they don't seem to be hurting you."
"Not hurting me! NOT HURTING ME! You said it yourself they are SUCKING OUT MY VITAL JUICES."
Dr. Katie shrugged,
"Welcome to pregnancy... sort of.”**
”Look we will monitor you, make sure they aren't sucking away to many nutrients. Look on the bright side, you can probably eat more, and judging from an analysis of the egg sacks, the average gestational period is only around two months."
"TWO MONTHS!?"
Sunny, who had been standing next to the man at the head of the exam table, couldn't suppress a short chirp of laughter.
He glowered at her,
"What's so funny!?"
She chirped again placing a hand on his arm,
"You're gonna be a mom."
If looks could kill, shed be reduced to a singularity,
"Get your hand off me or ill break it in half!"
She continued chirping but removed her hand just in case.
This was going to be a very awkward call to the UNSC and the GA.
For that matter, it was going to be a very awkward call home.

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2023.03.21 17:57 Posnail Interviewed about Agnes

I spoke with the news crew that was here today and spoke about the main issue about Agnes and the mental health services here on campus. I do not have connections with the two people who have died due to suicide. However I have dealt with suicide via failed attempts and loss of people close to me. Here is a summary of what I brought up. 1. Agnes Arnold Student access to Agnes Arnold top floors should be restricted during after hours and be monitored during campus hours. Agnes has been a suicide Hotspot since the 80's and university higher ups have only put short term solutions to this problem. Closing classes and relocation should have been the go to solutions to help close off Agnes and have been retrofitted. It should not have been the main solution. Agnes is technically 7 stories(6 floors and a basement level) and we have students have access to it that is a scary thought especially if ready access to a high building is a carrot on a stick to those planning on committing suicide. The slow response and band aid solutions are hurting the university as a whole. 2. Mental Health services CAPS(Counseling and psychological services) is a understaffed and under funding program here at the university. We have around 10 specialists mostly compromised of grad students completing their degree plan. The solution provided by CAPS is in a one semester plan. One semester that is not enough for those who are dealing with pressing issue. The individual sessions as well are for those who know what their problems are and are for solution planning instead. If CAPS can't treat you they will refer you to other houston service(which is a terrible industry with lack of accepting insurance and no available booking). We need more funding and the university needs to stop using the facade of being a top 50 university and say to the state we need funding for our students. Every university has this issue and being 45 in the nation or 20 in the nation is not going to solve this problem. 3 University response The university has the same copy and paste response to these situations. The most recent one was even shorten and was apathetic. At this point the university has provided copy-paste response. The university highers up hear the news through a telephone method with it trickling up to the dean of student affairs and the university president. This level of disconnection is one of the many the university has with it student body. They try to held on to the same conversation but now it shifting and they are behind in the times. The belief of face to face classroom and work environment while everyone can take a online class or work remote type of situation. Another example is the closing of campus, on campus residents don't have a food option during thses times and the higher don't think about it because they don't need it or use it.We need a better connection with the higher ups and the student body to solve issue like this especially when it comes to student mental health and wellbeing.
I hope my points help address these issues and my fellow cougars, if you ever need help find help. It is easier to give up and make believe that nothing is okay but it will be in the future all you have to do is ask. Find comfort in yourself and other.
TLDR Had a interview with KCRP and brought up the issues of the unsafe condition of Agnes and the events surrounding the building, the underwhelming amount of mental health services and capabilities of such programs here at the university, and finally the disconnection and apathy from university leaders and authorities.

2023.03.21 17:52 Any_Government7603 My ex wants to get back together, and will not take no for an answer.

My ex-fiancé and I have two kids. We split up about a month before we were to be married because she was sleeping with a close "friend" of mine. At the time I wanted to reconcile and attend couple's counciling. She decided she would rather be with him, and soon after moved into an apartment with him. I obtained 50% custody of our two young children.
Well, over the past few months she's been sending me weird and inappropriate messages. Pregnancy photos, family photos of us and the kids, compliments, etc. I have previous posts to this sub regarding this as it became very bothersome.
I have since moved on with my life. I am dating somebody, and I have been more focused on completing my master's degree and professional career than previously as I'm young (23m) have a good job and aspire to become a college professor later in life.
Well, I finally just confronted my ex about the weird messages and stuff, as they stopped when I set boundaries on communication, and then they returned with a vengeance. I'm not dumb. I had a good idea at what she was hinting at the whole time.
Well it all came out. She claims she messed up so badly, blames her mental health (which is unfortunately not the best) and is attempting to take responsibility. Bare in mind, she is still with my "friend" (for lack of a better term). And she wants to be a family again.
Obviously, I like many parents on here wish to give their children a family, but I'm not going to get back together with her for the kids. That's a recipe for disaster. So I said no. I kept it as cordial as possible and explained I'm not willing to put myself in a position to get hurt again, hurt the kids more and I'm happy with my current relationship. Not to mention my current girlfriend doesn't deserve to just get tossed aside like nothing.
My ex is not taking no for an answer since. She's almost taken it as an invitation to get worse about calls and texts. While restricting her to email is an option, my son has medical complications and has had several surgeries, and my daughter is special needs and there's a number of legitimate issues that could arise between one or both of them that I have to be available for a phone call. Setting my phone to do not disturb does not work, as she will call several times in a row.
This is becoming a strain on my life more than before. I'm 23. I just want to spend what time I can with my kids, enjoy the people in my life, build my career and what I can for my kids and myself.
I don't know what to do or if there is anything I can do. Several times a day, during work, late at night, when I'm with my girlfriend, when I'm with my friends, etc. When I have the kids or am at work I just ignore her entirely, but when I don't I feel obligated to answer on the off chance it becomes a boy who cried wolf situation and one of my kids needs me there.

2023.03.21 17:35 Burnlt_4 Student Debt is YOUR OWN FAULT

I cannot stand the lack of personal accountability in the world, it drives me insane. So when I hear people complain about student debt I cannot figure it out to save my life. These are adults, with full access to all the information, who willingly sign up for these loans. How can I feel you are not 100% responsible for paying them off and that being is debt is just your fault.
To highlight my perspective, I grew up poolow middle class. I grew up in a tiny duplex, I slept on the couch/hidabed the majority of my life because I didn't have a room or bed of my own, just not a ton of money in my family. We were fed and taken care of I will say. I knew I wanted to go to college and knew I didn't want debt. So in highschool I realized I was slightly above average at a sport, so I trained HARD in that sport. Then I knew the ACT was important to I studied and took all the free ACT classes I could. In highschool I spent everyday training and studying.
When college came around I had scholarship options, but not full rides. I got about half my school paid for through scholarships. Then I moved into an apartment with two other guys where we cut cost everywhere we could (we NEVER turned the heater on, it would be 50 in our apartment). I also worked three jobs during this time. I was able to pay for all of my undergrad with no debt. I then went to my masters where I found a job working for the university that would allow me to have my fees waived, then I wrote letters to scholarship funds till I got a scholarship to waive my tuition, then I also worked 3 jobs again during my masters. Finally, I went and got a doctorate by working my ass off to study for the GMAT, scoring very high so that a top 10 university would offer me a full ride to get my doctorate.
All of that to say, my situation is the same as many and many are better off than me and I was able to get three college degrees with no debt just because I worked at it. Even if you don't want to do all of that, you don't have to go to college. My friend is a doctor and his wife never went to college. He makes over 100K a year and she makes more than him. There are so many paths in life and if you choose college you are responsible for the debt.

2023.03.21 17:09 InternationalWash822 Warren Buffett invested in these Fintech Companies - How does SOFI Measure Up?

Warren Buffett invested in these Fintech Companies - How does SOFI Measure Up?
The fintech industry has seen one of the most exciting growth trends as it revolutionizes how people access financial services. Right now, there are over 30,000 fintech startups and by the end of 2021, fintech investment reached a total of $210 billion. The fintech sphere is only expected to grow, so I believe it is a very attractive industry for investors and Warren Buffet seems to think so too.
The Oracle of Omaha has been making large investments in multiple fintech companies. In fact, Buffet has invested over $900M (107.1M shares) in the Brazilian company, Nu Holdings, and $907M (30M shares) in ALLY. This is a huge investment even for someone like Buffett. Nu Holdings is actually his 8th largest investment in terms of shares. This raises the question, why has Buffett invested in these other fintech companies, but not in Sofi?
Throughout this post, I’ll be talking about Sofi, ALLY, and Nu Holdings - comparing their pros, cons, and similarities. My goal here is to see if there is room for 3 top dogs in the fintech industry or not.
Why has Buffett purchased a lot of shares of Nu Holdings, specifically?
For starters, the company has grown its customer base to 70.9 million clients in just over a year since going public. Nu Holdings provides credit cards to people who are not eligible to get one through other banks & tries to minimize risk by reducing the eligible benefits that the customer is initially eligible for. As they pay their bills on time, they unlock more benefits & more credit limits.
Another reason is its management. It's no secret that Buffett likes to invest in companies with good management. As he once said, “When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding management, our favorite holding period is forever.”
Nu Holdings has recently hired David Marcus (former president of PayPal & former Meta Board member) on March 6 to be part of its Board of Directors. It’s expected that David will play a crucial role in Nu’s journey going forward.
The rest of the management team brings a lot of experience to the table as well:
  • CEO, David Velez, was a partner at Sequoia capital between January 2011 & March 2013. He also worked for Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and General Atlantic.
  • CGO, Cristina Junqueira, worked for a Boston Consulting group before founding Nu Holdings in 2013.
  • CFO, Guilherme Lago, worked in Credit Suisse Group AG & Mckinsey as well.
  • CPO, Jagpreet Duggal, worked as a director of product management at Facebook.
So you can see Nu’s management team has significant experience in this sector and under their leadership, Nu Holdings grew its revs from $1.7 billion in 2021 to $4.8 billion in 2022 - a 182.3% increase YoY.
Nu Holdings’ Edge - Brazil’s Unbanked Population
Before Nu Holdings started, over 55 million Brazilians were unbanked. This is because it's notoriously difficult for people who are not wealthy to obtain credit cards in Brazil. In general, it's very difficult to get a credit card in Latin America without being one of the wealthy elites.
By offering credit cards to people who would not be able to obtain one any other way, Nu has captured a large, untapped market. This is the main reason Nu is as successful as it is today.
Compared to SOFI, Nu Holdings has a much larger client base, this is of course due to its operations in Brazil, Mexico, & Columbia which in total have a larger population than the US. Thanks in part to these widespread operations, Forbes listed Nu Holdings as one of the world’s best banks in 2022.
Nu Holdings has a larger client base, more revenues, and is growing at a much faster rate than Sofi. The main reason for this is the fact that Nu Holdings doesn’t have as many competitors as Sofi, especially since they focus on an untapped market in Latin America. With Sofi, they have competitors right, left, and center due to established banks and fintech competitors. Nu Holdings became profitable Q3 2022 - only a year after its inception. After making a net profit of $7.8 million in Q3, it went on to make $58 million the next quarter and is on track to report an EPS of $0.02 & $1.393B in revenues in Q1 2023
Whereas SOFI is still struggling to become profitable and is forecast to make an EPS of $-0.077 & $442.262M in revenue in Q1 2023.

How are Nu Holdings & Sofi similar?
But Nu Holdings & Sofi share one very important thing in common. They both want to be a one stop shop for financial services.
Since Sofi specializes in student loan refinancing, it creates a bond with younger customers who - hopefully - will turn into lifelong customers that use Sofi for all their banking needs. Similarly, Nu Holdings offers credit cards to customers younger than 18 in Brazil - capturing a demographic of young people who will hopefully become lifelong customers.
This means that both companies could continue to grow and expand as their customer base grows older and younger generations adopt their services as well.

Why has Buffett invested in ALLY?
Having invested $1.7B since 2012 in the industry giant, General Motors, you could say Buffet is an expert on the auto industry. Which helps explain why Buffett took an interest in Ally.
This fintech company offers multiple services but specializes in the auto loan industry since it once was a financing division of GM, originally known as GMAC. After GM sold the rest of its 8.5% stake in Ally for $900M in 2013, Ally has expanded its market by offering mortgages, credit cards, wealth management, & other services.

https://preview.redd.it/y1c473va84pa1.png?width=605&format=png&auto=webp&s=84b47713c9d3fc8551a21260e51fc863cc7d1570
Another reason Buffett is investing in ALLY could be its history of share buybacks. Buffett is a big believer in stock buybacks and has said they can be the best use of corporate capital. ALLY also offers quarterly dividends to shareholders, which is a sign of the company’s fundamental strength.
How does ALLY compare to Sofi?
The main difference is the source of Ally’s revenue. 65.6% of Ally’s total revenue in 2022 came from the auto finance industry, while Sofi’s edge is student loan refinancing. In 2019, Sofi generated 59.7% of its revenue from student loans. But it’s worth noting that it can be quite difficult to qualify for student loan refinancing if you have a bad credit score whereas it’s a bit easier for people to get auto loans.

https://preview.redd.it/q9efotfb84pa1.png?width=615&format=png&auto=webp&s=3dc7776eb6c02cd0e9293b82cb11e14b391cd86b
How are Ally & Sofi similar?
Ally & Sofi both offer commission free stock trading for investors with a high APY as well. Ally’s savings account offers 3.60% APY and Sofi offers 3.75% APY with a direct deposit. This means that with a direct deposit, you’ll earn a higher APY with Sofi, but without one, you’d earn a higher APY with Ally.
Both companies offer multiple services such as mortgage loans, credit cards, insurance, etc. and are online banks with no physical locations. Given their different niches, it makes sense that Ally’s customers tend to be millennials while Sofi’s customers tend to be students or fresh graduates.
Sofi’s Edge
So after going through the pros and cons of all three of these companies, you might be wondering if SOFI has what it takes to gain market share in the growing Fintech industry.
I believe Sofi has an edge over these two competitors when it comes to diversification. The two pictures below show the type of services that Sofi & Ally offer. Sofi is constantly trying to increase its market by opening up different services to attract new customers. To name a few:
  • Sofi Relay: Allows members to link all their existing deposit accounts, investment accounts, & retirement accounts into a single mobile dashboard.
  • Money Vaults: Helps users prioritize saving money. Vaults are used to save money for a certain purchase to be made in the future (Ex. Car or house).
  • Retirement accounts: Traditional, Roth, & SEP IRAs
    • Traditional: Traditional retirement account, withdrawable
    • Roth: Allows you to contribute after-tax dollars, and then withdraw the money tax free in retirement.
    • SEP IRA: A retirement account for someone who’s self-employed.
  • Sofi Protect: Gathers details to get comparisons on insurance providers to find the best rate for you.
  • Sofi Invest:
    • Crypto investing: offers trading for 30 cryptocurrencies with a 1.25% charge per trade.
    • Stock investing: stock and ETF investing commission free.
    • Automated Investing with goal setting, auto rebalancing, & Diversification
  • Loans:
    • Wedding loans: Loans used to purchase an engagement ring, wedding, or honeymoon with a low fixed-rate personal loan from $5k-$100k.
    • Travel Loans: Loan used to travel. Low fixed rate personal loan from $5k to $100k.
    • Law school loans: Loan for Law school students. Competitive rates, exclusive member benefits, & no fees
    • MBA Loans
    • Home Improvement loans
  • Cyber Insurance: Protection from Cyber financial fraud, cyber extortion, identity theft, phishing scams
  • Sofi Insights: Tracks all your money in one place on the mobile app, monitor your credit score, set multiple goals, track your spending.
  • Estate Planning: Partnered with Trust & Will to give members 15% off their trust.
I recently learned that SOFI is even letting its customers get early access to IPOs which could draw more traders to the company’s services. If SOFI underwrites more IPOs, investors like you and me may join its platform just to get in on that action. Personally, I think this is a fantastic service because up till now IPOs have been a very exclusive process.

https://preview.redd.it/0vcs7h5c84pa1.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=3521404dec4a95cb3ed2212eb32bbee5416a0fd1
Besides diversification, SOFI’s focus on student loan refinancing is also a plus imo. College education is essential in the US and without a college degree, most people can only get so far in their career.
For instance, 53.7% of the US working population in 2021 graduated from college and at least 75% of new jobs require a college degree.
When you factor in the average cost of tuition - which has soared 31.4% from 2010-2020 - and that the average student debt among college graduates is $28,000, SOFI is in a great position to profit from this sector.
Given this inflationary environment & higher interest rates, I think that demand for student loan refinancing will only increase. This is because employers are constantly looking for people with degrees & the number of jobs requiring this are increasing every year. So it's no surprise that CEO Anthony Noto recently said, “We’d expect the demand for that product (student loans) to really go through the roof and be back to normalized levels that we saw in 2019.”
But with the student loan pause in place, SOFI is losing a lot of money. The company stated that it has lost $300M to $400M and is pushing very hard to get a decision passed ending the student loan moratorium. The Supreme Court already heard the oral arguments regarding the case and is expected to give a decision in June.
If things are not resolved by then or the Supreme Court rules against federal student loan forgiveness, then payments are expected to resume by the end of August. This is because payments are expected to start up again, 60 days following the ruling.
Needless to say this would be a huge catalyst for SOFI and I, personally, believe that the Supreme Court will rule in SOFI’s favor. And the flood of refinancing requests that could come in once this limbo ends could give SOFI’s revenues a much-needed push. With this in mind, June will be a make-or-break moment for SOFI.
Now, you might be thinking ‘that’s great and all but what about Buffett’s 8th largest investment by shares? OP is just some dude on the internet, and this is THE Warren Buffett’.

https://preview.redd.it/w3k57vtc84pa1.png?width=288&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e5770fad03ae86cb15bcbe116bc706a512d9364
Well, you wouldn’t be wrong. It's hard to argue against Warren Buffett’s logic and I think NU could be a good investment as well, but compared to SOFI, I think that it presents a lot more risk.
For one thing, Brazil has just gotten out of one of its worst economic crises in history and with a new government taking over there’s a lot of uncertainty. Corruption is very high in Brazil, and banks which provide their services almost exclusively to the rich in Brazil could use their power to turn the government against Nu Holdings if they feel threatened.
Also, giving out credit cards to kids under 18 (even if the card’s benefits are limited) just sounds really risky to me. Given that most people in Brazil are not as financially well off as most US residents, its weaker currency, and struggling economy, Nu Holdings could face the greatest risk of all three companies. But time will tell whether the Brazilian government will make life easier or more difficult for a company like Nu Holdings.
So this means that ALLY, which also focuses on the US market for financial services, is probably SOFI’s greatest competition.
Both companies have a lot in common, but they’ve chosen to specialize in different niches. So let’s break it down:
  • 91.55% of households reported having access to at least one vehicle in 2020, however, the number of registered vehicles declined between 2012-2019 by over 25 million.
  • The average cost of a car in 2021 was $42,258 with an average payment of $563 per month. Today, it costs an average of $48,080 to purchase a new car.
  • Moreover, around 31% of American adults have relied on auto loans to pay for their car in 2022.
  • Rising inflation has caused new vehicle prices to increase 5.8% YoY according to February’s CPI report, although used car prices decreased 13.6% from last year (probably due to overstock).
With ALLY being specialized in the auto industry, its fortunes may take a hit as the US enters a recession since consumers are less likely to purchase new or expensive vehicles when they are monitoring their budgets. New vehicle sales dropped nearly 40% during the 2008 recession and I believe history is likely to repeat itself here if the economy enters a recession.
Regardless of the potential hit to the automotive sector, when you compare auto loans to student loans you quickly see that student loans take the cake.
The market size of the Auto leasing, loans, & sales financing industry is $173.2 billion, while the student loan industry is a massive $1.76 trillion. So Sofi has the upper hand here in terms of the market potential.
With college tuition constantly increasing & students entering college year after year,
SOFI also has stricter requirements for qualifying for personal loans, such as a credit score of 680 and other factors which make their loans comparatively safer since its clients are more thoroughly vetted. This is good because it allows Sofi to minimize the potential risk of a customer not being able to pay back their loan in the future.
Conclusion:
So, in conclusion, I think SOFI is in a fairly safe spot as long as the Supreme Court gives a favorable ruling. Since Nu Holdings operates in Latin America it won’t compete with Sofi for market share. Ally & Sofi also have different specializations, but Ally is a more established FinTech company which could take customers from Sofi. Still, SOFI’s goal is to become a one stop shop for all financial services and it has diversified its services extensively over the years which could give it an edge in this industry.
Personally, I believe SOFI will be able to grow its customer base better than ALLY because it appeals directly to young adults heading into college. If these customers have a good experience, then SOFI can become their go-to financial service provider for the rest of their life.
On this note, the FinTech industry is on track for major growth especially since Covid-19 acted as a catalyst for the industry - leading to wider adoption at a time when contactless payments were becoming essential.
Besides this, the FinTech industry will likely continue to grow just out of sheer practicality. For one thing, Fintech cuts down servicing costs like maintaining physical branches while still providing a very high value service. As more and more transactions move online, the digital revolution continues to work in the industry’s favor and the widespread adoption of smartphones means that our phones will increasingly act as wallets. So, it's not surprising that the use of Fintech companies increased 88% from 2020 to 2021.
So I'm pretty bullish on three of these stocks for the time being at least.
Now for the TA...
$SOFI

https://preview.redd.it/djuk58id84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74f72c6e21506030efc6bbc44374cb04b07096bb
$SOFI has been stuck in a sideways channel since April 2022. The stock has a strong resistance at $7.59 which it tested on its positive Q4 earnings, however SOFI dropped almost 18% to its support at $5.25 due to market uncertainty.
Now trading at $5.20, SOFI is below the 50, 200, and 21 MAs on the daily timeframe. Despite this, I’m expecting a bounce and potential retest of the $7.59 resistance leading up to the Supreme Court decision in June since the RSI oversold at 30.
Right now SOFI is fundamentally oversold IMO. I bought 1k shares here as a starter with a stop loss at the $4.92 support. I’ll be averaging down under the $5.25 support or averaging up depending on the trend. My take profits will be the 200 MA, $6.43 resistance and the $7.59 resistance.

https://preview.redd.it/pakxnr1e84pa1.jpg?width=1458&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fb5c7d97c02030b7ad888463c4c2cf572e973c5
$ALLY:

https://preview.redd.it/8zwd6jme84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=af9de5ffc042ca2bfaf546417438edac1e9dc409
ALLY was in a downward channel all of 2022 but it broke out at the start of 2023 - testing the $34 resistance after earnings. Since then the trend has reversed and is now bearish. The stock touched its $21.91 support mostly due to market turmoil rather than fundamentals.
I’m expecting ALLY to break out of this channel like it did at the start of this year when it approached the $34 support. The stock recently tested what was once the upper trendline and bounced off of it which is a bullish sign.
Personally, I think that these banking fears will dissipate now that the government has stepped in - as illustrated by the XLF closing green on Monday. Looking at the daily timeframe, ALLY is oversold with the RSI at 30 so I am expecting a bounce over the next few weeks.
Long-term, I think ALLY will trade in a sideways channel between the $23.80 support and $34 resistance until a strong catalyst is able to break it out.
But for now, I’ll take a swing here with a stoploss at $23 and my take profits at $27.05 and the 50MA.
$NU:

https://preview.redd.it/1x33g57f84pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e1b3757785d4d1a40bd84ea5607052fd7d5c833
Compared to ALLY and SOFI, NU has not dropped as dramatically, which is likely due to its exposure to Latin American markets rather than the US.
The stock is currently trending downwards within the sideways channel. The stock is testing the 200 MA on the daily chart, if it breaks through it I will be going short with the lower trendline as my take profit and the 50 MA as my SL.

2023.03.21 16:58 Rare_Improvement_241 Decolonization in Design and Governing

Decolonization in Design and Governing
This argumentative piece discusses the ideologies, constraints, positives, and negatives of decolonization. Decolonization refers to the movement of previously oppressed groups that go back to their original mannerisms, practices, and cultures; most groups that showed decolonization were often those from colonies that became independent of their colonizers.

Fig.1: Ironic English Protest

The most famous cases of decolonization appear hidden in plain sight, with some of the world's biggest countries showing scars of freedom fighting. The United States of America was not always united and free. In 1607, 104 Englishmen stepped onto the shores of middle North America. The British aimed to start a new settlement and further extend their roots to the furthest edges of the map. The British believed that their firepower and brute strength would overtake and overpower any existing post set up by other European countries and further be able to colonize any remaining native tribes who had maintained their independence thus far. The Native Indians are estimated to have arrived in America around 10,000 bc (Simonsen, 2006). These British people who settled in America became the new "Americans". They oppressed the Native Americans and fought them for their land leading to the First Native Indian War in 1609. The Native Americans were never defeated but suffered multiple casualties at the hands of the Americans. The Native Americans were close to losing the war towards the end of the 16th century but held off the Americans with their bows and arrows, stone clubs, spears, blow guns, and hatches. In the early 1700s, they were revolutionized and traded guns for goods with French, Italian, Belgian, and other significant European forces. Although Native Americans were not colonized, their ethics, practices, and arms were updated. They used the designs of oppressors to gain equality on the battlefield, fought the war for over 300 years, and were never fully controlled. When the war on Native Americans ended in 1924, they reverted from their colonial ways but kept using guns; what remained was their tribal and heritage-based home-building techniques, homemade, culture-filled weapons, notably the blowdart and bow and arrow, and their traditional Aztec prints (different to their camouflaged 300-year-old war attire) (Washburn, 2012).
In the areas of design in decolonization, the Native Americas proved that returning to their original roots was fulfilling and fruitful; they did not lose their culture and adapted to modern times to protect and stand their ground.

Fig. 2: Native Americans

Europeans (the Dutch) first inhabited Southern Africa in 1652. It was evident that their reasons for being there were not to colonize or to live in unison with the natives but rather to build a servicing port for ships and to farm on the rich African soils. Almost a decade later, the British arrived in 1661. The Europeans asserted dominance over the existing African tribes, forcing Africans to give up some of their heritage lands and be outcasts in new areas that were not their homes. For the next 300-odd years, countless wars broke out between the British, Dutch, and Southern African tribes. In the 1800s, Zulus adapted to the modern styles of fighting (similar to the previously-mentioned Native Americans) and put down their sticks, wooden weapons, and other fighting techniques and found guns to be more efficient. They also adapted to makeshift tent designs and sleeping solutions similar to the Europeans. Despite narrowly losing the war to the British during the Anglo-Zulu War, they used European designs to gain respect from the Europeans. Although oppressed, they had more peace than they had while coexisting in the same space as the Europeans.
In 1948, the apartheid regime began, and all people of colour were equally oppressed. The oppressed conformed to European ways of living but with fewer rights. They had no freedom to express their cultures and heritage through design, and European Gothic and Renaissance styles of Architecture were imminent throughout South Africa. Commercial buildings in CBDs and other areas of high business are plain and have very simplistic European facades. 1994 marked the end of the apartheid regime, and people of colour finally had equal rights. With that, their cultures began to thrive once again. Through fashion with cultural items such as animal prints, beaded goods, fancy feathered headwear, and other goods, African culture has imprinted on every race in South Africa; another race that embraced their fashion and culture was the Indians, who have pushed for fashion design and just like African (used as a vague, broad expression), has every race wearing it (Rovine, 2015). In architecture and the built environment, African culture can be represented by bright modern colours and unique patterns; their designs are slowly but surely making their way onto buildings as facades, decorative tiles, and finishes.

Fig. 3: South Africans Protesting against Inequality
While separating the art from the artist to some degree, the oppressed governing practices have quickly sent South Africa into poverty struck corrupted land; when looking at decolonization in terms of governing and control, although equal and free, it can be argued that since Africans have been reinstated back in control, the decolonizing of South Africa was detrimental (Hirsch, 2005). In design, Africa is thriving as a tourist hotspot as Africans have pushed their culture back out and into the world; by doing this, they have added depth to the South African culture and removed the dark monotone cloud that hung over South Africa's heritage.

Fig. 4: Constitutional Court of South Africa - Facade Design

In the mid-1600s, the British came across the remaining unexplored southern tip of Africa. It was once again a fight for them to reign power and authority over the native Venda people (Zimbabwe's leading and most prominent tribe). The British people fought for 300 years until a whole war broke out in then Rhodesia. The Rhodesian Bush War began between the Africans and Zulu in 1964 when the Africans opposed Rhodesian rule and oppression. The war became realistically winnable to the natives due to Zambia and Malawi gaining independence and the British Federation losing power in those countries. They used all the same tactics that they had learned as victims of their colonizers for the past 300 years; both sides used guns, knives, and bombs, and the fight was so equal that the war went on until 1979. The war ended in December, and by the first day of January 1980, the African people had already replaced the name Rhodesia with a new name that would fully represent their country, one that would go back to practicing Venda traditions of law and rule, viz. Zimbabwe (Gordon, 1981). Decolonization has previously shown that it is a positive idea with many advantages, but Zimbabwe was one of the significant cases of backlash.

Fig. 5: Zimbabweans with Arms Protesting White Governing
When Zimbabwe was restored to its original roots, Robert Mugabe became the prime minister in 1980 while Zimbabwe would still serve under partial British rule. Zimbabwe thrived for two years before Mugabe fired Joshua Nkomo (a member of the Zapu party) for accusing him of trying to overthrow the government; Mugabe enlisted North Korean trained soldiers to kill Nkomo's party off. In 1987, Mugabe merged forces with Nkomo and gained votes to become the president of Zimbabwe. Under Mugabe's decolonized rule, Africans gained more power in Zimbabwe than white people. Using pre-colonized rules, white people became a trophy-hunted commodity for the Africans. In 2000, Zimbabwe witnessed further bloodshed as white farm owners were slaughtered for their farms by squatters- the government supported these killings and abuse of power. In 2001, Zimbabwe opened up to the world about its financial problems as badly-run farms, poorly-maintained factories, and bank crashes caused the Zimbabwean dollar to drop quickly. Under decolonized governing, Zimbabwe was suspended by the Commonwealth and struggled with mass poverty and hunger. In 2005, an estimated 700,000 people were left homeless as the government orchestrated operation "clean-up" by destroying all street stalls and shacks. In 2008, the European Union and the United States declared full sanctions against Zimbabwe. In 2018, after 40 years of "independence", Zimbabwe changed the laws to give presidents a limited time of two terms in which they are allowed to serve a country.
The designs and systems established by Commonwealth law or any generic democratic ruling often allow countries to flourish or crash with equal fairness between government and citizens. Zimbabwe's recent history has shown that as good as decolonization may be; it may also cause years of bloodshed, a crashing economy, poverty, and famine.

Fig. 6: Zimbabweans Peacefully Protesting in 2020

In the early 1600s, the British landed on the warm sandy coast of Surat, India, solely intending to trade. Not long after, the British decided to dismiss their trade ideas with the Indians and instead do the trading of Indians and Indian goods. Despite not being under British Crown rule, India was oppressed and sapped of its people and goods. In 1858, the British officially declared that India's governing and control would come under British Crown rule whilst slowly easing off using Indians as enslaved people worldwide; they continued to trade cotton, tea, spices, indigo, silk, ivory, and marble deeply rooted in India's culture. Nearly 100 years after India served under British Crown rule, India broke free of the British and became independent, mainly through non-violent resistance promoted and endorsed by Mahatma Gandhi (Kale, 1998). India is still part of the Commonwealth, and the British heavily influenced their architecture (Cohen, 2001). However, after gaining independence, India went on a spree of building temples, shrines, and religious monuments. Since then, their unique culture can be seen in facades, tiles, gilded buildings, religious figures carved from stone, and other significant Indian designs (Scriver & Srivastava, 2016).
To inject more culture into the country, India is moving away from British glass box designs used as the blueprint for commercial buildings; they felt the buildings lacked depth. India identified decolonization as more than just using designs and input from pre-colonizing days. Instead, that design is a sense of unity and self-acceptance and has a much more robust and positive psychological effect on individuals. The past may have been better for India. However, by decolonizing design, they rediscovered their foundations and still give tourists and locals a feeling of rich heritage and culture from centuries ago, now in modern times.

Fig. 7: Indian Post-Oppression Bus Station Design

In Britain's reign for power worldwide, its biggest threat was China. Without slavery, stealing from oppressed countries, and other human rights violations, China thrived as an economic, cultural, and design hub. Britain sought to gain control of China's economic zones and initiated the First Opium war in 1839. Britain could only partially sabotage China because its population and brute armed forces ensured greater defense against colonization. Britain took control of an island off the coast of China and asserted British Crown rule over what would become Hong Kong. The British ruled Hong Kong for over a century and a half. The Hong Kong citizens did not resist oppression. They waited until Britain traded them back to China with the agreement that Hong Kong would not be decolonized and practice capitalist ideas and systems for 50 years after the handover (Wong, 2013).

Fig. 8: Hong Kong Citizens Demanding and Fighting for Democracy
While British architecture and design can be seen throughout Hong Kong, China explicitly tries to inject Chinese culture into the previously oppressed independent state. With Mandarin banners, bright red and yellow facades, and other Chinese symbols like dragons, China is singlehandedly decolonizing Hong Kong. The problem that arose with Hong Kong being handed over to another state was that Hong Kong never had its independence and always belonged to another country, never fully being able to practice its decolonization (Lim & Lim, 2007). While China is positively reinstating culture and heritage in Hong Kong, protestors continuously fight to make Hong Kong its own country.

Fig. 9: Proposed Building Facade Design from Mainland China

Throughout this argumentative essay, we discussed decolonization in governance, design, heritage, and culture. Decolonization in the world's history is proven to be primarily positive. However, care must be taken to avoid extreme decolonization, especially in areas of design, as we risk losing the richly-woven tapestries of design constructs that have metamorphosized through the centuries.

Published online 2018 Feb 16. doi: 10.2147/JPR.S129641 PMCID: PMC5819579 PMID: 29497328 Managing cluster headache with sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation: a review Denys Fontaine, corresponding author1,2 Serena Santucci,1,2 and Michel Lanteri-Minet2,3,4 Author information Copyright and License information Disclaimer Go to: Abstract Cluster headache (CH) is a primary headache and considered as one of the worst pains known to man. The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) plays a pivotal role in cranial autonomic symptoms associated with pain. Lesioning procedures involving the SPG and experimental acute SPG stimulation have shown some degree of efficacy with regard to CH. A neuromodulation device, chronically implanted in the pterygopalatine fossa, has been specifically designed for acute on-demand SPG stimulation. In a pilot placebo-controlled study in 28 patients suffering from refractory chronic CH, alleviation of pain was achieved in 67.1% of full stimulation-treated attacks compared to 7% of sham stimulation-treated attacks (p<0.0001). Long-term results (24 months; 33 patients) confirmed the efficacy of SPG stimulation as an abortive treatment for CH attacks. Moreover, 35% of the patients observed a >50% reduction in attack frequency, suggesting that repeated use of SPG stimulation might act as a CH-preventive treatment. Globally, 61% of the patients were acute responders, frequency responders, or both, and 39% did not respond to SPG stimulation. The safety of SPG microstimulator implantation procedure was evaluated in a cohort of 99 patients; facial sensory disturbances were observed in 67% of the patients (46% of them being transient), transient allodynia in 3%, and infection in 5%. SPG stimulation appears as a promising innovative, efficient, and safe therapeutic solution for patients suffering from severe CH. It has shown its efficacy in aborting CH attacks compared to placebo stimulation, suggesting that it is particularly adapted for CH patients who are not sufficiently improved by abortive treatments such as sumatriptan and oxygen. However, further studies comparing SPG stimulation with standard abortive and/or preventive CH treatments will be necessary to define more precisely its place within the management of severe chronic and/or episodic CH. 2023.03.21 15:17 biofanatic Breeding Emerald Corydoras - advice needed

Hi all,
I am attempting to breed my Corydoras Splendens and need some advice.
I am conditioning 9 corys for 3 weeks first: - 24 degrees water - No bubbler - 140L heavily planted tank - NO2, NO3, NH4+ all at very low levels.
Feeding them: - 1 cube bloodworms every other day - 1 cube brine shrimp on alternate days - ~15 Hikari sinking wafers daily
They finish all their food quickly and are hungry because I was previously under feeding them with only 1 algae wafer every 2 days (didn’t realise this wasn’t enough).
Is feeding them until they stop eating too much? They seem very keen to eat it all and I am trying to fatten up the females. I feed in small batches to make sure water quality is not affected.
My main concern is the cold water change. The tank mates of my corys are: - 11 black neon tetras - 10 amano shrimp.
Will these species be able to endure the drop in temperature? I plan to do a 50% water change using 17 degree water, to lower my temperature to around 20-21 degrees.
I guess it should be ok as shrimp are hardy and tetras are from the same part of the world - any insight would be appreciated.
If breeding is successful, which breeder box do you recommend? And would crushed wafers or pellets be suitable food for the fry?

2023.03.21 15:16 seo-mspl24 we need to conserve energy and some tips for saving energy

We, individuals, squander a ton of energy in our everyday utilization either by not switching the lights out when not being used or by using old and wasteful machines that consume enormous measures of power, or by not turning off the vehicle motor when the light is truly lengthy. Energy should be saved not exclusively to reduce expenses yet additionally to protect the assets for more extended use.
Starting today, the majority of the energy is produced from coal-fueled power plants. These plants really do produce energy yet, in addition, contaminate the climate by discharging destructive gases into the air. These poisonous gases are simply destructive to the climate and objective serious well-being worries to people and creatures. Consistently a great many individuals bite the dust because of the presence of poisonous substances in the air that we relax. Air contamination consequently is one of the serious environmental issues that we are facing today.
Assets that are accessible to us today ought to be utilized financially to monitor them for later use since they are restricted and will terminate one day. The miserable part is that we, people, have been utilizing these assets at such a high rate that we could wind up utilizing them a whole lot earlier. These assets, for example, coal, oil, and gas are not reasonable. They probably won't be accessible for our approaching age. We, in this way, have an obligation close by to monitor and save energy as much as we can to make it accessible for our children and shield our current circumstances from additional corruption. The following is a rundown that can test supportive to you in saving energy in your regular routine. Go through them and figure out how you can save energy by taking on these basic techniques.
Ways Of saving Energy at Home
  1. Switch off cooling frameworks in vacant rooms and attempt to keep the room cool by keeping the drapes. Doing this will help in moderating energy and less utilization.
  2. Switch out the lights while leaving the rooms and utilize faint lights in displays, entryways, overhangs, and washrooms.
  3. Utilize daylight during the day. Curtains or shades on windows and entryways are to be drawn separated during day time, for regular light to lessen the need for electrical lights inside the home.
  4. Springs consume the greatest measure of power. Use them to warm just that measure of water that is required. Indoor regulators can be set to a lower temperature for example 45 to 50 degrees.
  5. Switch off apparatuses when not being used. Always remember to turn off lights, fans, and fridges when you are going out for a trip toward the end of the week.
  6. Utilize conservative bright light bulbs all the more frequently as they consume 10% less power than typical bulbs.
  7. Close unused rooms. Switch indoor regulators off and leave vents shut in empty rooms to save energy.
  8. Number of electrical lighting focuses to be diminished to one for each room, inside the pads. Every one of the extra fittings is to be eliminated/forever turned off.

After GM sold the rest of its 8.5% stake in Ally for $900M in 2013, Ally has expanded its market by offering mortgages, credit cards, wealth management, & other services.

https://preview.redd.it/6liekr1ji2pa1.png?width=605&format=png&auto=webp&s=35371e326a0eef95abca694e301214fc37b2a922
Another reason Buffett is investing in ALLY could be its history of share buybacks.
But it’s worth noting that it can be quite difficult to qualify for student loan refinancing if you have a bad credit score whereas it’s a bit easier for people to get auto loans.

https://preview.redd.it/wvzss9cli2pa1.png?width=615&format=png&auto=webp&s=c18ca9f460bb243e20b50511b4cfeb75cdb1c707
Personally, I think this is a fantastic service because up till now IPOs have been a very exclusive process.

https://preview.redd.it/ji26in1xi2pa1.png?width=570&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc4061d928758f1c0eefdaafe27c6757f6646cc3
OP is just some dude on the internet, and this is THE Warren Buffett’.

https://preview.redd.it/qonrid93j2pa1.png?width=288&format=png&auto=webp&s=013b4d5c65fb57d66bf5dd85ef7e9543f13c4f7f
$SOFI
https://preview.redd.it/rrr2t6qri3pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f75f0cc4ccb5f94ee14743e50a6988cc67079f2d
My take profits will be the 200 MA, $6.43 resistance and the $7.59 resistance.
https://preview.redd.it/5co1e6nvi3pa1.jpg?width=1458&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b97304f23081aa807ce1d59ea912bd8895725cbf
$ALLY:
https://preview.redd.it/dsie3d0mj3pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ffa57a2231b5f47f9456edefb900bcaea469f9b
$NU:
https://preview.redd.it/79rqip8jj3pa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13fa8969d4890aa9c704d8b6a2a93f1e96d62335

Electrical setup:

The van's wiring was done with great attention to detail. There are plenty of 12V and 120V outlets throughout the van, including in cabinets. There are fuses for all the outlets, ensuring that even if something with high voltage is plugged in, the system will remain safe as everything is protected by appropriate fuses. The wires are labeled and organized, and all joints are sturdy.
The van's power system includes 600aH batteries, 350 Watt Solar Panels, and a DC to DC charger. This setup has never caused any issues, and the batteries are typically charged between 80-90%. Even on cloudy days, I could go a few days using everything on full power without any problems. There's a Renogy app that tells you how much power is left in the batteries and other information.

Lights

The van's lighting was designed with stealth in mind, and provides ample light. There are dimmable 120V lights on the ceiling with switches at the entrance and near the bed, as well as 12V lights under the kitchen and storage cabinets and under the bed. Additionally, there are configurable LED lights around the padded headboard that can be adjusted for color, brightness and patterns.

Heating/cooling:

The van has two Maxxair 05100K Ventilation Fans, one above the bed and one in the main area. These fans can blow in or out, allowing for optimal airflow when used in conjunction with the Sirocco fan on the wall, which is highly adjustable and can be directed towards the workspace or bed.
The heating system uses a Propex HS2000 heater, which is superior to commonly used Buddy heaters. The Propex heater features two chambers, one for burning propane and another for circulating hot air. All burned propane and exhaust gasses are released outside of the van, eliminating any health or mold concerns. The van was able to maintain a comfortable temperature inside even during a winter storm when temperature outside dropped to 4 degrees.

Kitchen:

Black walnut countertops with ample space and includes a Dometic CD-50, 50L Drawer Refrigerator and Freezer. I use InstantPot for cooking, which uses electricity, but the propane locker has been carefully designed to accommodate any other cooking equipment if desired. The van's water system utilizes 5-gallon jugs that can be easily replaced at most grocery stores, with a total of 30 gallons of water storage in the back. There is also an option to install a larger water tank underneath the van, if desired.

Vehicle Details:

  • 132k miles
  • DIESEL engine
  • Full inspection on 2/17
  • No accidents
  • Regular maintenance
  • Backup camera
  • 6.8" Pioneer Display with built-in Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth
