2023.03.21 18:39 handpulled_noodles Solo Traveler in Santa Barbara
I won a 1-week paid trip to Santa Barbara from work (we have a small office here) and I'm planning to come visit in early April. The trip is pretty open-ended so I get the luxury to make my own plans. I'll be solo and I'd love to get your suggestions on what to do and where to go. For reference, I'm in my mid-20s and fairly active.
So far I planning to fly into SF and drive the PCH down to Santa Barbara. As far as activities while I'm here, it looks like the adventure sea cave kayak tour would be fun for a day. A horseback ride in some trails would be interesting. Of course I'll also spend some time down by the beaches. I'll also spend a couple of half days visiting the small office and research labs at UCSB.
I heard whale watching is great, but I'd imagine I'll get some good views doing the sea caves tour. Any other fun suggestions? Also, anything on the must-eat list?
Thanks in advance!

2023.03.21 13:49 heatmizr31 Considering the Hotel Santa Barbara
My girlfriend and I will be in Santa Barbara in May and we are considering staying at either the Hotel Santa Barbara or the Hotel Milo. Does any one have any opinions on either. We stayed at the Milo back when it was the Oceania and like it. I'm considering the Hotel Santa Barbara since it is close to restaurants on state street. We'll have a car so transportation isn't an issue but like the idea of getting something to eat or a drink and walking back to the hotel.

2023.03.21 10:37 joniponi96 PCH roadtrip Marriotts/late twenties couple
Hi all,
I‘ve been a silent reader of this sub for a while and have always appreciated the insights - now I have a question myself.
We‘re a European couple in our twenties and are planning an early-summer road trip from San Francisco via the PCH, Joshua Tree, San Diego to LA. Just wanted to get some insights on the hotels as it‘s super hard to judge the standard of different Marriott brands from here. Some facts:
- I‘m Platinum/potentially Titanium until then (thanks for the Promo, Marriott)
- Plan is to book at least a few of our 12 nights on points, we're on a relatively tight budget (<200 USD/night) the other nights (they don't have to be Marriott)
- We don't want to do anything dodgy/stay in shady places/moldy Marriotts - I'd rather pay cash then
- I'll have roughly ~230k points to blow until then
Here goes:
- San Francisco, 2 nights, Marriott Marquis, 87k points. Wanted to go with San Fran Proper, but I read here that there‘s no status benefits and the neighborhood is a bit dodgy. On the other hand we usually appreciate Boutique hotels over standard Marriotts. Any views on this? We won't have a car for those 2 nights.
- Santa Cruz, 1 night, Courtyard, 32k points. Wanted to use this night to explore the Big Sur area a bit, so I guess Santa Cruz is not ideal, but closer properties are either super expensive or badly rated. Might also just stay in some cheap Motel here, as this is mainly going to be driving anyway?
- Santa Maria, 1 night, Fairfield, 29k points. Also not ideally located as this was meant to explore San Luis Obispo. This night also blows the points budget if I book all other nights so I guess it's a trade-off between this and the one above.
- Santa Barbara, 1 night, Courtyard Downtown, 45k points. Overpriced for European standards, but what can you do.
- Joshua Tree, 2 nights, I'll book this outside of Marriott
- San Diego, 2 nights, also outside of Marriott - open for suggestions here!
- LA, 3 nights, Springhill Downey, 54k points. Not optimal for sightseeing I guess, but all the more central places are too much for my points budget. Is this an ok place? Else I might not do most of the mid-journey Marriott spots and splurge a bit more on this, e.g., Westin Bonaventure
Still very open to changes, so any input on this from the Marriot Pros would be highly appreciated!
One bonus question: With Marriotts new points pricing, is it realistic that any of these places will decrease in points over the next few weeks? Is it wort checking/is there some tool to check automatically?

2023.03.21 09:23 Impossible_Carob86 Housing advice for UCSB international student
I’m moving to Santa Barbara for the summer and I wanna ask you about the living situation there. Any answer is appreciated! 1. Should I apply for Campus Housing at UCSB or is it nicer to live in IV in a private house with others? 2. I’m a Graduate and I can only find double rooms. Would you recommend me a single or is a double also nice/fun? 3. Is the area in IV safe? 4. Where is the night life the most active in Santa Barbara or IV specifically? 5. Is it unusual for my boyfriend to visit if it’s a double or can he stay over for some time? 6. Where in general is the nicest area to live in IV? 7. Is living in a house with more people (eg 10) bettemore fun than living with a few (eg 3)? 8. Where can I do a surf course in Santa Barbara?
Thanks a lot in advance!
