2023.03.22 10:12 PM_ME_YOUR_KlTTlES Is there any benefit to contributing to retirement if you're almost retired?
My friend is two years from retirement. Single. Kids moved out. Home paid off. LCOL. $100k salary. Upon retirement pension bringing in $1,000 and SS bringing in $2,000. If we pull a 4% safe withdrawal rate from his $200,000 401k that adds another $666 per month. So he's looking at $3,666 per month salary or $44,000 per year.
Now, he can pay his bills in retirement with that but we were talking and he mentioned he has $70,000 in a checking account that he doesn't want to put in a retirement account because he says he is worried about the market.
I mentioned that just because you have it in your 401k doesn't mean it has to be in the market. You can just park it in a settlement fund or grab a fund that the broker uses to buy tbills. Get 3.75% because then it's in your retirement fund and you get all those perks.
So I want to advise him to immediately dump $7,000 into Roth IRA for 2022, $7,500 into Roth IRA for 2023, and immediately up 401k contributions to hit the max on the last paycheck of December. At least park everything into a TBill fund or contribute, say, 25% into SPLG and the rest in TBills if he's worried. He is worried about the economy but I told him that when everybody is afraid is the best time to DCA a little into the market. If you wait until it's not scary anymore you've waited too long.
I'd also like to have him drop almost all the remaining from the $70,000 cash into a HYSA with somebody like Ally or Marcus.
Just because you're close to retirement doesn't mean you need to stop getting returns. He's potentially got another 30-40 years to get returns so it's best to pump those numbers!
BUT- he is close to retirement and the last thing I want to do is give him bad advice so I've come to you all to double-check my work. You've helped me a ton in the past and I'm trying to pass out along to a friend.
Thanks in advance!

2023.03.22 10:01 sw_faulty Why You Should Go Vegan
According to The Vegan Society:
"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."
1. Ethics
1.1 Sentience of Animals
I care about other human beings because I know that they are having a subjective experience. I know that, like me, they can be happy, anxious, angry or upset. I generally don't want them to die (outside of euthanasia), both because of the pain involved and because their subjective experience will end, precluding further happiness. Their subjective experience is also why I treat them with respect them as individuals, such as seeking their consent for sex and leaving them free from arbitrary physical pain and mental abuse. Our society has enshrined these concepts into legal rights, but like me, I doubt your appreciation for these rights stems from their legality, but rather because of their effect (their benefit) on us as people.
Many non-human animals also seem to be having subjective experiences, and care for one another just like humans do. It's easy to find videos of
vertebrates playing with one another,
showing concern, or
grieving loss. Humans have understood that animals are sentient
for centuries. We've come to the point that
laws are being passed acknowledging that fact. Even invertebrates can feel pain.
In one experiment, fruit flies learned to avoid odours associated with electric shocks. In another, they were given an analgesic which let them pass through a heated tube, which they had previously avoided. Some invertebrates show hallmarks of emotional states, such as honeybees, which can
develop a pessimistic cognitive bias. If you've had pets, you know that they have a personality. My old cat was lazy but friendly. My current cat is inquisitive and playful. In the sense that they have a personality, they are persons. Animals are people. Most of us learn not to arbitrarily hurt other people for our own whims, and when we find out we have hurt someone, we feel shame and guilt. We should be vegan for the same reason we shouldn't kill and eat human beings: all sentient animals, including humans, are having a subjective experience and can feel pain, enjoy happiness and fear death. Ending that subjective experience is wrong. Intentionally hurting that sentient being is wrong. Paying someone else to do it for you doesn't make it better.
1.2 The Brutalisation of Society
There are about 8 billion human beings on the planet. Every year,
our society breeds, exploits and kills about 70 billion land animals. The number of marine animals isn't tracked (it's measured by weight - 100 billion tons per year), but it's likely in the trillions. Those are animals that are sexually assaulted to cause them to reproduce, kept in horrendous conditions, and then
gased to death or stabbed in the throat or thrown on a conveyor belt and blended with a macerator. It's hard to quantify what this system does to humans. We know
abusing animals is a predictor of anti-social personality disorder. Dehumanising opponents and subaltern peoples by comparing them to animals has a long history in racist propaganda, and especially in war propaganda. The hierarchies of nation, race and gender are complemented by the hierarchy of species. If humans were more compassionate to all kinds of sentient life, I'd hope that murder, racism and war would be more difficult for a normal person to conceive of doing. I think that treating species as a hierarchy, with life at the bottom of that hierarchy treated as a commodity, makes our society more brutal. I want a compassionate society.
To justify the abuse of sentient beings by appealing to the pleasure we get from eating them seems to me like a kind of socially acceptable psychopathy. We can and should do better.
2. Environment
2.1 Greenhouse Gas Emissions
A
2013 study found that animal agriculture is responsible for the emission 7.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, or 14.5% of human emissions.
A
2021 study increased that estimate to 9.8 gigatonnes, or 21% of human emissions.
This is why
the individual emissions figures for animal vs plant foods are so stark, ranging from 60kg of CO2 equivalent for a kilo of beef, down to 300g for a kilo of nuts.
To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees by 2100, humanity needs to
reduce its emissions by 45% by 2030, and become net zero by 2050. Imagine if we achieve this goal by lowering emissions from everything else, but continue to kill and eat animals for our pleasure. That means we will have to find some way to suck carbon and methane out of the air to the tune of 14.5-21% of our current annual emissions (which is projected to increase as China and India increase their wealth and pick up the Standard American Diet). We will need to do this while still dedicating vast quantities of our land to growing crops and pastures for animals to feed on. Currently,
77% of the world's agricultural land is used for animal agriculture. So instead of freeing up that land to grow trees, sucking carbon out of the air, and making our task easier, we would instead choose to make our already hard task even harder.
2.2 Pollution
Runoff from farms (some for animals, others using animal manure as fertiliser) is
destroying the ecosystems of many rivers, lakes and coastlines. I'm sure you've seen aerial and satellite photographs of horrific pigshit lagoons, coloured green and pink from the bacteria growing in them. When the farms flood, such as during hurricanes, that pig slurry
spills over and infects whole regions with salmonella and listeria. Of course, even without hurricanes,
animal manure is the main source of such bacteria in plant foods. 2.3 Water and Land Use
No food system can overcome the laws of thermodynamics. Feeding plants to an animal will produce fewer calories for humans than eating plants directly (this is called 'trophic levels'). The ratio varies from
3% efficiency for cattle, to 9% for pigs, to 13% for chickens, to 17% for dairy and eggs. This inefficiency makes the previously mentioned 77% of arable land used for animal agriculture very troubling.
10% of the world was food insecure in 2020, up from 8.4% in 2019. Humanity is still experiencing population growth, so food insecurity will get worse in the future. We need to replace animal food with plant food just to stop people in the global periphery starving to death. Remember that food is a global commodity, so increased demand for soya-fed beef cattle in Brazil means increased costs around the world for beef, soya, and things that could have been grown in place of the soya.
Water resources are already becoming strained, even in developed countries like
America, Britain and
Germany. Like in the Soviet Union with the Aral Sea, America is actually causing some lakes, like the Great Salt Lake in Utah,
to dry up due to agricultural irrigation. Rather than for cotton as with the Aral Sea, this is mostly for the sake of animal feed.
86.6% of irrigated water in Utah goes to alfalfa, pasture land and grass hay. A cloud of toxic dust kicked up from the dry lake bed
will eventually envelop Salt Lake City, for the sake of
an industry only worth 3% of the state's GDP. Comparisons of water footprints for animal vs plant foods are gobsmacking, because pastures and feed crops take up so much space. As water resources become more scarce in the future thanks to the depletion of acquifers and changing weather patterns, human civilisation will have to choose either to use its water to produce more efficient plant foods, or eat a luxury that causes needless suffering for all involved.
3. Health
3.1 Carcinogens, Cholesterol and Saturated Fat in Animal Products
In 2015, the World Health Organisation reviewed 800 studies, and
concluded that red meat is a Group 2A carcinogen, while processed meat is a Group 1 carcinogen. The cause is things like salts and other preservatives in processed meat, and the
heme iron present in all meat, which causes oxidative stress. Cholesterol and saturated fat from animal foods have been known to cause heart disease for half a century, dating back to studies like the
LA Veterans Trial in 1969, and
the North Karelia Project in 1972. Heart disease
killed 700,000 Americans in 2020, almost twice as many as died from Covid-19.
3.2 Antimicrobial Resistance
A majority of antimicrobials sold globally are fed to livestock, with
America using about 80% for this purpose. The
UN has declared antimicrobial resistance to be one of the 10 top global public health threats facing humanity, and a major cause of AMR is overuse.
3.3 Zoonotic Spillover
Intensive animal farming
has been called a "petri dish for pathogens" with potential to "spark the next pandemic". Pathogens that have recently spilled over from animals to humans include:
1996 and 2013 avian flu 2003 SARS 2009 swine flu 2019 Covid-19, 3.4 Worker Health
Killing a neverending stream of terrified, screaming sentient beings is the stuff of nightmares. After their first kill, slaugherhouse workers
report suffering from increased levels of: trauma, intense shock, paranoia, fear, anxiety, guilt, and shame.
Besides wrecking their mental health, it can also wreck their physical health.
In 2007, 24 slaugherhouse workers in Minnesota began suffering from an autoimmune disease caused by inhaling aerosolised pig brains. Pig brains were lodged in the workers' lungs. Because pig and human brains are so similar, the workers' immune systems began attacking their own nervous systems.
The psychopathic animal agriculture industry is not beyond
exploiting children and
even slaves. submitted by

2023.03.22 09:53 ThrowRA_Lem0nSoda My Girlfriend (20F) doesn't seem to want to be with me (23M) anymore.
SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH I'M FRENCH and it's a long story
i want advice to have a better control of my feeling and some point of view
To be honest, I hope people will be respectful towards me and my girlfriend, because I think a lot of mistakes have been made between us. So, it's been three years since I've been with my girlfriend.
For context, I met her while I was with my ex-girlfriend whom I wasn't really in love with at the time, but had trouble accepting it. We had a disagreement during the summer vacation with my ex and we were on a break.
I met my current girlfriend by chance and we got very close during that time. She had an unofficial boyfriend, but never really saw him. Eventually, my ex-girlfriend came back, and my current girlfriend and I both consider ourselves polyamorous, but I now think that I can no longer be polyamorous because I believe in adapting to society to be stable.
I come from a poor family, so I had to grow up faster and I think I need to start building my future in a stable way, like with a wife, a house, etc. At that time, I was considering trying a polyamorous relationship with my current girlfriend and my ex. Fast forward, things were going really well, but it was making everyone uncomfortable.
At this point in my life, I'm in Africa, in a country I don't know with no bearings, and then a seismic event happens in my life. I lose all my friends from that time, including my roommate and my best friend with whom I shared everything, because of a dispute. This moment traumatized me a lot.
At the time, I weighed 125 kg for 1m93 and had a 6-month depression in Africa, during which I gained weight and reached 160kg. Honestly, Africa is not going well for me and my condition is so horrible that I have to come back to France earlier than expected.
I reconnect with my childhood friends whom I hadn't been able to see for a year and a half. I'm living a good life with my girlfriend. When I go back to school, I know I'm going to Ireland for a year of exchange.
As mentioned at the beginning, I come from a poor family and I chose Ireland because I didn't have to pay any fees or visa, but mostly because I was going to share an apartment with two of my friends and my best friend, which would reduce the costs. But as I said, my friends turned their backs on me at that time, so I find myself alone and I have to go into debt to find housing there.
I don't see anyone because I have one friend who is friends with all the exchange students at the university and I feel uncomfortable and untrusting around him (we talk again now, but we never really addressed this issue and he doesn't want to). My former best friend, whom I knew lived on the street next to mine, cut me off abruptly without giving me a chance to respond, but I didn't want to try to reconnect out of respect for her decision.
So, I didn't leave my house to avoid running into her and I didn't go out at night for fear of ending up in the same place. Mission accomplished, I never ran into her.
This is to explain the emptiness of my social life at that time. Coming back to my girlfriend, I think at that time, I demanded a lot of attention from her. I had just lost everything, and I was afraid of losing her too. Also, I felt empty and on the brink of suicide without her presence. Looking back, I can now say that it was unhealthy. We had to call each other as if we were living together. We would call each other and watch series together, she would do her homework while on the phone with me, and I would eat while on the phone with her. If she didn't call me every day, I would become ill. At one point, she was in the final exam period, so we couldn't call each other. I was upset and angry, and we argued. She apologized and said that it would be better when she's on vacation at the end of the week.
The day before she left, she told me that her parents had just offered her to go skiing for the beginning of the holidays, and that she would be absent for four days. I was furious. She left for four days, and I stayed in bed, crying and sleeping, without eating for four days.
There were several episodes like this, and at that time, I told her that she could see someone else if she wanted to have sex, but she didn't want to. On my part, I had a beginning of a relationship with a girl from my residence. It was at the beginning of our relationship, but I still talked to my girlfriend about it to have permission just in case something happened. She told me clearly that she refused because we had just gone through the polyamorous period with my ex-girlfriend and she didn't feel very comfortable yet. I understood and refused, limiting my relationship with the other girl to a minimum. Honestly, it didn't bother me at all, even though I am older than her and my only sexual relationships with penetration were with her and my ex, and she had a pretty wide sexual life before me, with more than seven men.
So, this year in Ireland was difficult for me. I had gone from Africa to Ireland and didn't leave my house each time. To be honest, Ireland was the hardest because I am poor, and I had never traveled before, and I had spent a lot of money on my school fees to be able to travel for a year abroad. It was literally my only motivation, so it broke me a little.
I came back, and I knew I would spend time with my girlfriend and my friends, but as soon as I arrived, my friends told me that they were all going back to our home country (an equivalent of Hawaii but in France), so I was going to be alone here. And my girlfriend was hesitant to go on an exchange year in LA. I encouraged her to do it because the United States is amazing, and Hollywood would be a great opportunity because she studies cinema. I encouraged her because she thought she wouldn't be accepted, and she didn't care about traveling and didn't particularly like the US. She decided to go to LA for the exchange year.
So, we finally get to the important part of this story. My girlfriend arrived in LA, and I stayed in France, and once again, I am alone (although a little less than in Ireland, and I go out a bit, which is already better, and I'm back to sports because I remind you that I am now at 165 kg). I make frequent appointments with a therapist to feel better, and I have a poorly paid job to finish my studies. I had a difficult year because I had to complete my thesis. Before my girlfriend
left for the USA, our sex life was calm for several reasons: personal problems, she was busy preparing for her trip, and we had little intimacy. So, before her departure, I asked her if she wanted to have sex in the USA because she had the opportunity for two years, but she said it was impossible.
She comes to the USA, stops taking the pill because it's too complicated to get it there, we try to call each other from time to time to watch movies or videos, I stay up late because I take the time difference on my shoulders. After 2 months, she tells me that she doesn't feel good in the USA because she's not doing anything (due to social anxiety and lack of money) and she would really like to sign up for Tinder.
Honestly, I'm a bit surprised because she promised that she wouldn't, but I accept it because it also satisfies my kink of seeing her getting fucked by other guys. But she has few successful dates, and although it doesn't bother me that she slept with one of them, it bothers me that we call each other less often (and that I'm stressed and can't sleep when she's out because I'm worried about her).
But it's okay, she comes back for Christmas (not for me but because she loves celebrating Christmas with her family). During the time she's here, everything goes pretty well, we see each other quite often, everything is perfect, I finally meet her parents, I talk to mine about her, everything is fine. Just one small thing: her former fuck buddy blocks her for no reason, she tells me she doesn't care, but it's a bit annoying. I tell her it's going to be okay, she just has to move on because she shouldn't be obsessing over it. She says it's true. And on the day she leaves for the USA, she tweets in private that she misses him, that he was incredible, that she's destroyed by his departure, etc.
She hid it from me (often it hurts me more when someone hides something from me than the thing itself). I discovered it by chance, and I remind her that she's not ready for this kind of relationship because she has attachment issues, so she should be careful because she'll hurt herself.
Thinking about it, I tell her clearly that it's better if we stop the open relationship because she has problems in this area and can't just have a sex friend like some people do. And I tell her clearly that normally this kind of relationship should be a mutual agreement and it's supposed to stop if it bothers the other person, she tells me that she won't stop.
Knowing that in reality, the question only arises for her and not for me because I'm not looking for a sex friend. An anxious, depressed, not very attractive, and morbidly obese guy doesn't appeal to many people, so I'm at 0. And to be honest, I tell her that normally sex buddies should be less important than her boyfriend and it shouldn't be so difficult to stop it to preserve her boyfriend. She tells me she needs it because otherwise she has no social interaction and she's ready to leave me for that.
It already hurts me a lot, but in the end, I'm a bit obliged to accept it, but whatever. Since then, she's met two guys: Trevor, who lives near her but not in the same city, and they see each other from time to time. Honestly, no problem with him, he doesn't make a big deal out of it and takes her home when they're done (important for me because sleeping with someone is intimate and sacred, and I like to have a debrief).
Bryan seemed okay at first because he had similar interests to me, so I thought it would work out. But I noticed that he tried to change my mind about certain things. Going back in chronological order, I decided to take a vacation to the USA because I missed my girlfriend, and it was a good opportunity. I asked her for help since I wouldn't be able to stay with her due to the rules. We struggled for weeks to figure out if I could come, but it finally worked out. I took all my salary in advance, asked for money from my brother, mother, father, and even grandparents. Finally, I thought, "We can celebrate Valentine's Day together."
The first two days were okay with a few minor problems, but then I woke up one morning before her and saw a message from her to her best friend, who hates me and has been campaigning for her to break up with me for a long time, saying, "I will probably break up with him after he leaves. It disgusts me. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. He stinks. Everyone I love smells good, but he stinks." It was heartbreaking, especially on Valentine's Day, after traveling 1,000 km and using all my money. It was also traumatic because I had issues with sweating a lot as a child due to hormonal problems, so being told that I stink brought back some trauma.
I told her that she could leave if she wanted to because I would never hold someone back from staying with me without love. She said that it had gone beyond her initial thought, and she was lost. She didn't know if she was cut out for a relationship. We decided to stay together, but it wasn't definitive. She needed to think about it. The rest of my stay was a bit of a rollercoaster. I was afraid she would leave me the whole time, but otherwise, things went well.
After I left, we spent a few weeks together, which were very nice. Then, I received news that I was accepted into a program to work in the equivalent of NASA for my field of research. Furthermore, it was in my hometown, so I could go back there for a while. I told my girlfriend, and she was happy. I thought it was great because I would be less on her back since the time difference would increase, and I would be surrounded by my friends. At that moment, she was a bit afraid that we would spend less time together, but she hoped we could still spend a lot of time together. However, I didn't sleep for two days before leaving because I was stressed.
And at one point, we quickly got into a dispute about Bryan because he was too involved in his feelings and she was getting attached. I spoke to her harshly, which she took badly, and she told me she wanted to break up just one hour before my long-haul flight.
I begged her to give me a chance and at least talk about it. She agreed, and I told her that we would assume we were giving it a chance by discussing it and that we were still together. It was super important that she couldn't see anyone else until I was back and we had talked because our rule was never to sleep with anyone else while we were in a fight. It was one of the longest flights of my life.
I landed, went through my affairs, and came home. Eventually, my girlfriend didn't want to talk on the phone anymore. She was confused, and I started to stress, thinking that she went to see her hookup Bryan. However, she told me she smoked and was feeling a bit of a bad trip. I worried, but she said she was leaving her phone with a friend and wouldn't answer anymore. I felt somewhat reassured and thought it wasn't so bad, even though she wasn't supposed to smoke for her health.
On my birthday, she forgot it was my special day and went to see Bryan to watch a movie. I reminded her it was my birthday, and she hesitated but said she needed to prioritize her needs before me and my birthday. I told her it made me sad, and she lost her temper, saying she didn't care about me or my birthday. I gave up and left. She eventually told me she was sorry and wouldn't go if I didn't let her. I told her she could go, but the damage was done. However, things got a little better. In the middle of the evening, I asked her when she was coming back so we could discuss our issues. She said she wasn't coming back and was sleeping there. She told me this at the last minute without saying it before because I wouldn't have accepted it if that was the condition. I begged her to come back, but she refused.
We had little chance to talk and went from breaking up to a temporary break to just getting back together due to our disputes. She admitted she had thought about it and really loved me, and it had always been sincere, but she wanted to enjoy her remaining time in the USA with Bryan. She also told me that the night she smoked, it was false. She was with Bryan and not with a friend, and she had lied to me to enjoy herself. She told me to let her enjoy her relationship and that he had asked her to be his girlfriend, but she refused.
So currently, I'm alone. My girlfriend prefers to see a guy she supposedly doesn't like more than me and can't see him without sleeping with him. She prefers to do things with him rather than with me, and he has had inappropriate behavior.
In short, I feel pathetic partly because I'm the boyfriend who is his girlfriend's doormat, justifying her behavior by saying she loves me but wants to focus on her own desires. However, her desire to focus on herself isn't about her friends, her sports, or her studies, which were the real problems, but rather living in a "hoe era" with a guy who is horrible according to me.
I want to know to find a way to be more okay with my girlfriend need ?

2023.03.22 09:51 Ok-Lengthiness8737 Buy a house or invest?
Age 27, salary 70k ish (partial commission) and will likely grow over the next few years.
Debt 0, emergency fund 7k, tfsa 1500. Currently saving between 1200 and 1500 per month.
I know this question has been addressed in articles, but I wanted to get some perspective from those further along. My current living situation is a house rental with fiance and 2 close friends. My total housing expenses including rent, utilities, internet are under $600 per month.
I share a vehicle with fiance as I work remotely in a city and don't need my own.
I'm wondering I should be planning for buying a house or if I should try and continue with this low cost living situation as long as possible?
I'd be needing 5% down on a 200-250k house where I live and this would be very doable in the next 1-2 years with my low expenses and the upcoming FHSA.
On paper my expenses would absolutely go up, but it does also feel like a good time to buy. Higher interest rates mean lower principal, and I can always refinance after 5 years to remove the mortgage insurance and (likely) lower the interest rate.
Even in a "low" cost of living area like I'm in, rental rates are getting absurd and I don't believe my current situation is one I'll be able to stay in for the next 10 years.

2023.03.22 09:31 KaleidoscopeTiny5973 Am I owed a year's worth of mileage reimbursement by my employer?
Location: Southern California. I started working for a medical practice nearly one year ago. When I first found the job posting online, the primary location was listed for a city 25-30 minutes/11 miles from mine-- let's call this Clinic A. Reasonable commute, especially compared to the one I had been doing previously which was 38 miles 4 days a week.. the reason why I left that job and took this one.
Before I started with the practice, I was informed that I would likely have to travel to other clinic locations, Clinic B and Clinic C, once or maybe twice a week, in addition to my primary location at Clinic A. These clinics are 35 and 27 mi away from Clinic A, respectively. I was willing to make this commute once or twice a week because it was an inherent necessity of the job, and I believed Clinic A would remain my primary location.
Fast forward to one year later, I see that on average I have been sent to Clinic B or C, or even further to Surgery Center X (40.5 miles), anywhere from 1-3 times per week- most weeks twice. A number of coworkers (who were all employed for the Clinic A location) have to make a similar commute week by week, and we have reached a point of immense frustration and even rage (I am rage typing this post at midnight before I have to drive out to Clinic C tomorrow morning). We live in Southern California where traffic is insane. My commute to and from Clinics B and C takes anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours (one way!). That's 3-4 hours of driving per day. Not to mention, we get paid $19-22 per hour. The cost of gas, wear-and-tear on our cars, and toll on our mental sanity is reaching its brink.
We have never been compensated formally for our mileage on days we have to commute to Clinics B and C. I have heard from coworkers of instances where they have been handed single $50 gift cards for gas as appeasement measures by our utterly barebones HR department (we basically don't have one). This has happened once or twice for two of my coworkers. But that's it. These gift cards have never been offered to anyone that hasn't explicitly expressed their frustration to "HR," and never more than once or twice. I have yet to see a gift card, but I would rather not be offered one. It's infantilizing and clearly a diversion tactic.
Something felt very wrong and manipulative about this whole situation so I did some basic research on mileage reimbursement laws for California. It looks like businesses are not required to compensate employees for mileage they incur as part of their daily commute, but they are required to compensate if employees drive somewhere that isn't their typical work location. According to these stipulations, it would seem that my employer doesn't have to compensate my mileage because I regularly travel to Clinics B and C. However, my argument is that I was hired primarily for Clinic A, and that the reason why my employer isn't willing to pay mileage for Clinic B and C is because they never formally defined Clinic A as my "home" location (on paper), even though WE know and EVERYONE knows my coworkers and I were hired for this location.
After months of us pushing for mileage reimbursement, "HR" and the partners of the practice started having discussions about what they should do. Long story short, we were given an announcement (verbal, nothing on paper) that they would start covering mileage at the standard federal rate of .655 cents per mile, only for us to receive absolutely no follow up on how or when to document/submit our mileage. I found out a few days ago that the head director got cold feet and is now unwilling to reimburse mileage. What the actual fuck.
I will be leaving the practice soon, and I know my coworkers also have plans to leave. However, I need to see some justice. For myself, my coworkers, and future unknowing employees that are going to go through the exact same thing we have. We are not the litigating type. We just want to know the law, and make it known that we know.
Do we have any legal rights to receive mileage reimbursement? And how far back? Sound legal advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

2023.03.22 09:28 Gloomy_Ad_5843 Debunking India is rape Capital fallacy
Even if you think 95% cases in India are not reported still per capita rape cases are higher in USA.
What in my opinion makes it worse is victim blaming.
US also has a victim blaming going on specially in their college campuses.
In the US, a video recording of the crime can be, and is used as evidence in the court. While in India, a video recording is used to shame and silence the victim.
Also how are you comparing how
law acts on video evidence in US with how
public reacts on video evidence?
Is this not textbook example of false comparison? Considering law should be compared with law and people with people?
I remember how a while ago, name of the rape victim was among the highest searched terms on a porn site. Shameful is a rather soft term for this. Each time the news of a rape makes headlines, along comes a sexist remark from a party leader.
Unfortunately same things happen in US as well. It's just that their population is not high enough to make them reach number one on search list.
Plus they don't report on rapes like we do, so knowledge of a rape case never goes outside the city in most cases for them.
Here, we know about rapes happening 1000 km away from us. (Which in my opinion is a good thing. US media houses care more about image management of the country than their own citizen's safety making them worse than trash.)
I don't know much about the politics around sexual crimes in the US, but I can safely say that the chances that a victim gets justice and leads a comparatively normal life without judgements from peers is higher in the US.
I don't know anything about a country but I will say using my inferiority complex that US is better. This is what this statement looks like.
That being said, this is a horrible crime and not something to compete about. The number must be zero both in India and around the world.
Then preach it to the US idiots filled with superiority complex before coming here. Why is it that preachers always try to persuade the retaliators and not the aggressors?
Just wondering, where do you think rape cases get more unreported? India or America?
I gave you detailed answer of this question with data but I didn't knew your pea sized brain was unable to process this data.
how america define rape
https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/blog/updated-definition-rape how India defines rape
https://www.indiacode.nic.in/show-data?actid=AC_CEN_5_23_00037_186045_1523266765688&orderno=424 Compare yourself.
lmk which country has more child marriage,
Don't have data but child marriage in India is illegal but it is legal in USA. So it's not a crime there.
which country let's their Hindu representatives out even after raping women?
USA does that. Not hindu but Christian probably
https://www.kptv.com/2022/12/16/portlands-jogger-rapist-released-friday-after-36-years-prison-victims-concerned-outraged/ Not half as much effective as Indian blaming culture. Your whole life is ruined NOT coz of the mental effect on the victim but coz of the enormous shaming the society does. And don't compare the effects also coz India is a collectivistic society, the opinion of the collective matters more here.
That is just your opinion. There is no statistical evidence to suggest that. Shaming does exist but if you want to claim it is higher or lower than other countries, statistics are needed not opinions.
No it's not. The reason the law acts that way is CONNECTED to how the people react. Honour culture is not as prominent there so it's considered appropriate to use videos as evidence.
Absolutely false. Law is independent of the feelings of the people. That is why it's law.
Law of one country cannot be compared to feelings of people in another country. That is textbook definition of false comparison.
This is the stupidest mental gymnastics you are doing.
Ummm...the OPPOSITE is true you know that right? Data collection in India is bad and since we like to attach shame to women's bodies many people don't even report.
False. Public opinions are not defined by statistical data but news reports.
Media reports define public opinion. Statistical reports defines actual data and law. There is no mix matching here. How hard is it to get that?
I am literally laughing at the amount of intentional mix matching you are trying to do just because you can't accept that "
muh america" has as much and more shit than many other countries in terms of rape.
Again the opposite is true. We are the ones that try to hide it as much as we can. And no US media houses don't do that, it's a different thing that in the US every city has its own channel but no they don't burry it or sweep anything under the carpet.
Evidence? Just saying "opposite is true" won't make it to be.
Because statistically rape news is a national news in India and Indian media is much more likely to report rape than US.
The ratio of "rape registered in police station" by "rape reported by media" is way higher in the US than in India.
If they are not reporting the rapes registered, we are supposed to play make believe that their media is better at reporting rapes in general because again "
muh america". Keep dreaming.
You don't NECESSARILY have to know about the hair thin nuances to know what the culture around it is like. A knowledge on how they treat things like sex, women and men is quite enough to draw conclusions.
Yeah sure. Discuss on rape and laws without knowing the laws.
Sure, sure,
SURE.
This so called "overall idea of what culture is" is what is called prejudice.
Real knowledge requires nuance.
But again I am talking to someone who denies nuance as a necessity.
India: 4.9 per 100k US: 38.2 per 100k
For India's number to be equal to the US with the assumption that all rapes are reported in the US,
4.9/38.3 = 12.8%
What this means is, even if 87% of rapes go unreported in India, our country will is just as bad as the US.
If you still want to believe the propaganda and think the worst of your countrymen, it's up to you.
Maybe you'll believe a woman writing for the scroll.
Is India the rape capital of the world? Think again The rate of rape in India is low, even factoring in a high degree of under-reporting.
“The foreign media always describes India as having the maximum number of rapes, but this is not true,” said Flavia Agnes, a women’s rights lawyer with Majlis Legal Centre in Mumbai.
The past year has seen headlines reading, 'Understanding India's rape crisis' or 'Rape capital image affecting Indian tourism?' Others use anecdotal evidence to place India among the top five least safe countries for women in the world. However, these media reports, both Indian and foreign, strike far from the truth.

2023.03.22 09:25 Gloomy_Ad_5843 Debunking India is the rape Capital fallacy
Even if you think 95% cases in India are not reported still per capita rape cases are higher in USA.
What in my opinion makes it worse is victim blaming.
US also has a victim blaming going on specially in their college campuses.
In the US, a video recording of the crime can be, and is used as evidence in the court. While in India, a video recording is used to shame and silence the victim.
Also how are you comparing how
law acts on video evidence in US with how
public reacts on video evidence?

2023.03.22 09:17 dumpydame Best way to support TGG financially?
Hi All! I’ve been wondering this for a while and since it’s maxfun drive right now and I just recently finished grad school and got my first real adult job, I’m ready to pop the question:
What is the best option for supporting TGG financially? I’m hesitant to commit to the monthly plan (even at $5 per month) as I’m coming out of a divorce, living in an expensive city, and my budget is still stabilizing. I’d be happy to join at this level, but I know Adam and Ben have complained about people who join up and then cancel after the drive. Another option sounds like waiting until I’m comfortable and buying a P1 message. So what is better: $5/month, but more likely to cancel when I get stressed by my budget, costs, and new salary in a month or two OR wait and do a P1 when I’m more comfortable OR wait and sign up in a couple months? As well, are there other options that I’m missing here that might be more financially accessible?
It probably sounds dumb, but like a lot of people, this podcast got me through some really tough times over the past few years. I’ve been looking forward to the day when I can walk down to the local recruiting center, join up to become an enlisted member and start paying back all that free content I’ve been enjoying for years!
