This is a concept for an ice themed cave biome to oppose the fiery Volcanic Basin. I originally created it as a suggestion for the Caves and Cliffs update, then I tried to make a mod about it, but I don't know how to code Minecraft mods...
So I'm posting it here for you all to see. An explanation of the biome is provided below, in an excerpt from a spelunker's journal:
"The Glacial Depths. Quite the hard freeze, y'know? This biome is a network of frozen ice caves found in the Deepslate layers of the overworld, below y=0. The biome is composed of permafrost, a very tightly packed combination of ice and rock. Dustings of snow cover the ground in some places, and icicles line the ceiling. Parts of the biome are covered in a forest of winterwood trees, somehow able to grow despite no natural light in the caves. These trees have azure hues and seem to have leaves made of ice crystals. Hanging from the leaves are these "Aurora Crystals", which are very prismatic. When exposed to light, they will emit rays of dazzling light. It really is quite beautiful to watch.
Other parts of these caves have vast lakes and rivers of water, frozen over in some places by ice. Some of the ice is fragile, and it breaks if I tread on it. Occasionally I will find a deposit of Coldblood embedded in the permafrost. This thick, cold liquid seems to drain the heat out of anything it touches. I can use it to create Coldblood blocks, which may freeze nearby water, create snow on nearby blocks, and freeze anything that walks over it. The substance can also make a Coldblood amulet, protecting one from the infernal heat of the Volcanic Basin.
Just entering this biome is dangerous, as spending more than three minutes here without a Flarium necklace from the volcanic caves will result in freezing. My movement speed slows drastically and I begin to take damage as if I were submerged in powder snow. The only way to stop this is to leave the biome. I can't warm up using lava, either, because any lava in this biome will be instantly turned to obsidian. Yikes!
Besides the winterwood trees, another type of flora has adapted to the harsh temperatures. Chilly plants grow chilly peppers, which seem rather similar to Jalapeños, except they're cold. In fact, biting into one makes your mouth feel like its freezing! Luckily, these peppers grant immunity to slowness, and also cause any monster that touches me to slow down. I can also make the peppers into salsa using a bowl, and eating it grants the same effects, while also making any food I eat within the next minute grant two more hunger points! Everything really is better with salsa.
If you do decide to collect the icicles, don't bother: they won't drop anything. If exposed to light, the icicles will melt, detaching from the ceiling and falling to the ground. Similar to dripstone, this harms mobs that it falls on. The only way I have found to harvest the icicles is to use the Silk Touch enchantment. The Glacial Depths naturally spawns Strays in place of skeletons, meaning it is more dangerous here.
If you want to harvest coldblood or chilly peppers for use, then this is the place to visit. Same if you would like to decorate your builds with winterwood or permafrost blocks. But be warned, you need to either leave the area before freezing, or bring a flarium necklace if you wish to visit. Being frozen alive is NOT a very enjoyable fate." -Unknown
I wouldn't call this a suggestion to be added to the game, more like a cool concept I felt like sharing. This isn't the only concept I have, I have a ton more I'd love to share!

2023.03.03 23:24 MelancholyOrgy The Leakening 2: Return of the Uncle! New 5-Star Liyue Geo Catalyst!? (Totally legit the guy made a pinkie promise)

Hey guys, it's been like 20 days since the last leak I posted and I started to think maybe the leaker guy's uncle got lamented on by Hoyoverse's mercenaries...
So the other day I was farming materials for my Dehya so I can use her in this hypercarry team I've been building with Xingqiu, Yelan and Beidou (I've been practicing with Hu Tao so I have my jump cancels completely memorized, gonna do sick damage with Dehya's burst) when the leaker guy sent me a message. Well, it was just one sentence:
"It's time for you to post the next leak."
So without further ado, here's the second totally legit character leak this guy's uncle smuggled out of Hoyoverse's secret underground base!

5-Star Geo Catalyst Character

A laid-back grifter and former Liyue jewel shop owner who makes counterfeit crystals and jewels with his Vision and then sells them to unsuspecting buyers. By the time the "goods" disintegrate he's already long gone. He's constantly on the run from government officials and disgruntled former customers alike. He tries to stay away from Liyue if he can help it but does occasionally sneak back in to enjoy Wanmin Restaurant’s cooking or to partake in the Lantern Rite. He typically doesn’t get to stay for long until the Millelith spot him and chase him out of Liyue once more.

Normal Attack

Tosses a crystal at his opponent which deals Geo damage. He tosses three crystals in quick succession before reaching in his robe and throwing a handful of crystals in an arc in front of him.

Charged Attack

After channeling Geo energy in the palm of his hand he throws three larger crystals that track opponents quickly and aggressively.

Plunge Attack

Gathering the might of Geo, he plunges towards the ground from mid-air, damaging all opponents in his path. Deals AoE Geo DMG upon impact with the ground.

Elemental Skill

Casts a sigil on the ground that, when stepped upon by an opponent, will trigger a violent burst of large crystals that will encase the opponent and deal Geo damage in a large area around the sigil.
The opponent will be trapped in the crystal until they break free, heavy damage is dealt to the crystal or three seconds pass, whichever comes first. If the crystal is shattered another instance of AoE Geo damage will occur.
Due to the sharpness and rigid nature of the crystals the opponent will take extra damage when breaking free as well as when the crystal is attacked with heavy damage such as normal attacks by claymore users and attacks with high stagger.
The sigil will remain on the field for 12 seconds after which it will disappear. More than one sigil can exist on the field at a time and will be able to trap one opponent each. The sigil and resulting crystal trap can be charged by Prismatic Crystals. Resulting shatters and AoE damage will likewise be charged with the crystallized element.
The Elemental Skill creates 3 Elemental particles and has a 15 second cooldown.

Elemental Burst

Snaps his fingers and makes his crystals converge in one location, pulling any crystallized opponent into the point of convergence. The crystals will release their elemental charge and shatter, whirling around and dealing continuous damage to any opponents trapped within.
If more than one opponent is affected by the same crystallized element then that element will become empowered and deal more ticks of damage over time as well as increasing the damage each tick does.
If more than one crystallized element is present within the point of convergence the resulting elemental reactions will receive an additional multiplier depending on the reaction.
If no crystallized element is present within the point of convergence the disintegration of the crystals will create a fine powder of sharp particles. The resulting storm of crystal sand will have an increased AoE, increased ability to pull in enemies as well as shredding DEF and Geo Damage resistance.
The Crystallized status effect must be present on an opponent within the point of convergence for the aforementioned effects to take effect. Only one of these effects can be active at a time. The first effect to trigger takes precedence. The burst has a 60 energy cost and has a 18 second cooldown.

A1 Passive

When this character is in the party the Crystallize reaction no longer provides a shield upon picking up a Crystallize shard. Instead, the Crystallize reaction creates Prismatic Crystals which, when picked up by himself or another on-field character, will cause his next Normal Attack, Charged Attack or Elemental Skill to launch the Prismatic Crystal at an opponent or spawn a crystal trap charged with the crystallized element respectively. If a character other than him picks up the crystal they are granted Elemental DMG Bonus of the crystal's imbued element based on 15% of his Elemental Mastery for 10 seconds.
When hit with a Prismatic Crystal the opponent becomes affected with the crystallized element. This element will remain on the opponent until they get affected by another attack charged with a Prismatic Crystal of a different element or after 10 seconds, whichever comes first.
A maximum of 6 Prismatic Crystals can be held by this character at a time. If another crystal is picked up it replaces the oldest crystal. The crystals that have been picked up show up above the character's head.

A4 Passive

The damage that Normal Attacks, Charged Attacks, Elemental Skills and Elemental Bursts that are affected by a crystallized element do are increased by 0.5% for every point of this character's Elemental Mastery. Shatters that occur as a result of an opponent breaking free or from heavy attacks/attacks with high stagger are increased by 1.5% for every point of this character's Elemental Mastery.

Exploration Passive

Gains 25% more rewards when dispatched on a Liyue Expedition for 20 hours.

Constellations

Constellation 1

The Elemental Skill deals more damage to enemies at or below 40% HP.

Constellation 2

Increases ATK SPD by 2.5% for 7 seconds after every third hit of the character's Normal or Charged Attacks. This effect can stack up to 6 times, totaling a 15% ATK SPD increase.

Constellation 3

Elemental Skill: Increases this talent's level by 3 and raises its maximum level to 15.

Constellation 4

After this character uses his Elemental Burst all other characters in the party (excluding himself) gain 10% Crit Rate and 20% Crit Damage for 15 seconds.

Constellation 5

Elemental Burst: Increases this talent's level by 3 and raises its maximum level to 15.

Constellation 6

This character’s Elemental Burst now gains all three effects by default. His Elemental Skill will now automatically shatter after 3 seconds and the crystal trap will now cause a small explosion of the crystallized element on opponents struck by the AoE caused by it shattering. Using his Elemental Burst on an opponent encased in a crystal trap will have the crystal shatter instantly with the shatter damage being increased by 250% of the character’s Elemental Mastery.

That's all for now, there's one character left in this bundle of leaks but the leaker guy has to translate it from Hilichurlian first apparently.
Writing these character kits is kind of fun for me but I'm no theorycrafter so I won't bother with creating damage scalings and such for any of these characters. Neither this or the previous character I came up with are supposed to have insane scalings due to their EM scaling. They're supposed to be good at C0 but really go insane when you C6R5 them. Well, maybe I overdid it a bit lol. Anyway, I hope these posts are at least a little bit interesting. I have one more kit already made and after that I dunno if I'll bother creating more.

Early in their history this was underwater caves and passages leading to, and existing on, the surface. Conflict and difficulty finding resources would drive the Mahn’sun’ari (Mon-soon-are-E) back into the depths of the oceans where they used magic and ingenuity to design vast underwater dwellings. They continued to push deeper into the water and banding together their various tribal communities to eventually form the great underwater city of Mahn’sun.

We begin our adventure in the world of Aethrazia. A planet in a solar system not too far from our own. Aethrazia was the result of a war between two sisters. Aielstruhm and Mvordikah. Gods of fire and ice respectively. The ferocity of their battle created the Spark of Creation. A relic sought after since the dawn of time. One that many believe to be no more than children’s stories.
Your story begins in the northernmost province of Aethrazia, Nortrend. A mostly barren tundra known for its unique wildlife and rare beasts. The Izguardi (A large dwarven clan) settled
Choose between five different storylines, make decisions along your character’s adventure, roll the respective dice included with this adventure to determine certain outcomes, and experience your own epic story. Welcome, adventurer, to Aethrazia.
DWARF: Your eyes slowly bat open. Your arms involuntarily stretch out. You yawn and take in the first senses of the day. Sulfur. Pausing for a moment, you pick up on the subtle distant rumbling of drills and hammers beating the earth. Another day in paradise.
Your personal quarters are small. Featuring a bed, small chest, and a few personal belongings. The sleeping quarters are adjacent to the chow hall, which is sourced by the Grub Garden. Hordes of dwarves, kobolds, halflings, and thralls busily move about the halls outside your room. You are in the depths of Izguard. A dwarven owned mining operation turned small city-state buried deep below the icy tundra of Nortrend. You were born here. Grew up working closely with the other dwarves. Mentored by people such as Tam’ara, Edgar Stonetoe, and a thrall named Leek. You are of noble blood, being a descendent of the Moonchasers. A founding family of Izguard. Well-known by other dwarves and respected by older generations.

You get dressed and begin to step off towards the central chute, or the 'Blow Hole' as it has been lovingly nicknamed. You notice Mire and Fehrune boarding one of the nicer metal lifts. Fehrune holds the safety lock open and gestures for you to join.
A2) Rush forward and join them
You push past a few disgruntled kobolds pulling carts and shimmy into the entrance of the lift. The iron gate locks closed, Mire places his hand heavily down on your shoulder with a smile, "Wuz tinking e may naught e’r make it tis'day!” Mire laughs abrasively "Tuh pit master would have ye hide for less." Fehrune lightly chuckling, adjusts a pair of brass spectacles above his stubby, plump nose. “Pay tuh ol coot no mind, boy.” Fehrune has been a mentor and friend since childhood. His long red beard now streaked with wide bolts of silver and grey. His voice crackling more as the days go on. The smut and smog of the various excavation sites have taken there toll, even with modern dwarven medical applications, you fear it won’t be long before his voice begins to go completely.
The lift rumbles to life. Steam releases somewhere above you. There is a harsh jolt before the lift begins to descend slowly down the chute. Various conversations erupt as the workers battle away the unease of silence.
"Ten Scallions tat me digs up a bigger rose den thuh rest of yuh lot tis'day." Mire wagers. A couple joking and dismissing responses go by.
In a friendly banter you reply, "12 scallions says you don' dig up more t'en your own sweat, ya fool!" There are a few chuckles from around the lift. "Aye an anot'er 5 dat you.." the dwarf is cut-off, a large deep voice heavily breaks through the conversation. "I bet 100 Scallions dat not tuh lot of yuh all tuh'getter pull up more Rose den I." Inuig stands proudly, barely able to stand his full height. A soft but serious smile on his graying leathered face. The only goliath in all Izguard.
You smile softly to yourself but remain quiet on the lift. A couple more minutes pass as you continue descending The Chute. You pass the various chambers and "floors" of Izguard. Britefire torches dot the walls in all directions of the chute giving off soft dancing hues of blue. The smell of sulfur increases heavily as you pass the smelting chamber. Flashes of yellow and red swim from its mouth.
"Don't miss that work, huh." a deep voice directed to someone behind you. Memories of working the forge as a young dwarf swarm your thoughts. The pressure from bits of cloth stuffed up your nostrils to counter the pungent smells of sulfur and various accelerants. The taste of the air. The heat... always the heat.
The lift clunks to a hard stop. The small iron gate flings open and everyone begins to file off towards their respective worksites.
Your site is Drill 5. In hall L-17
You continue navigating the tunnels, Mire waves goodbye and mentions a couple joking insults to other workers headed to their respective sites.
You come to a chicken foot split in the tunnel. The tunnel to your left is labeled L-11, the center tunnel is blocked off with tape and there are multiple notices up stating things like “Danger”, “Death”, and "Forbidden”, to your right is hall L-17. L-11, they are pulling up copper and common stone. L-X, the blocked off tunnel, your old roommate was one of the lives lost that day… The miners hit a vein containing powerful magic. The result was a temporal portal opening. Demonic creatures spewed forth. Ripping to shreds any and everything in their path. A handful of examiners, holy men, and demon hunters closed the rift and deemed operations safe to continue but restricted the immediate area until the rest of the vein could be extracted safely.
A few workers continue to pass to your left and right, there is a cart and a couple stands with assorted mining equipment.

You dismiss your friend’s gesture and eye the next lift over. Two kobolds pass ahead pulling carts filled with common stone and debris. You catch a glimpse of Cristalis Rosarium. An extremely valuable resource. The primary reason mining operations began here. Mining operations are carefully monitored, and guards posted along known deposit routes. Heavy screening is done on all excavations, and it is a rarity for any Rosarium to go unseen.

I stared once more down at the limp corpse of what used to be a friend. Vibrant. Joyful. Edged and precise like the finest of pick-axes. Marked, lovingly, with the trials of time and the burden of valiant effort.

You hold your mother’s longbow in your left hand, an arrow carefully notched along the wyrm-silk string. Your Shadow Raven companion continues flying carefully above the travelers walking a few hundred feet below and in-front of you. Pausing carefully, your eyes roll back into your head. In what feels like a long blink, you open your eyes from the perspective of Ent’ere. Two armed guards. The size and stride would suggest half-orcs. Not uncommon for hired swords. A well-dressed halfling follows behind carrying a bulky knapsack. Behind the little-one, an Eldari. Your eyes roll back to their default position, you pause, a dark feeling building in your chest… The Eldari have not been seen in months. Not since the counterraid on one of their largest settlements. This cannot be good.

The Eldari Ridgeline was the only entity not entirely enveloped in evergreens for miles. There were rolling hills and other eyesores but nothing as prominent as that ridge. Tans and burnt oranges painted across its face with green speckeling. Almost as if a giant had walked begrudgingly down that very slope, probably dragging some sort of large weapon, or carcass, a long time ago.
HUMAN: The normally bustling streets of Golden City hold a different air of calm today. Stepping carefully through the venous cobblestone alleys, you pause for a moment. The stale smell of urine, ale, and the refute give rest to a gentle waft of freshly baked Torma bread. The cinnamon and sourdough like aroma bring back memories of beautiful mornings and long days of work in the fields south of the city. Life was simpler working the land.
Picking up pace again, your hand grips slightly tighter around the parcel. A delivery for Ereik, one of the few human council members sitting on the Golden Sigil's Inquisitor board. For as long as you can remember there has been some sort of war. Catastrophic change. So, the news of the Lycanthropes mobilizing to the north didn't cause too much concern. Besides, they practically owned Golden City anyways. What was curious, you thought as you entered the Gilded Calf, was the lack of breakfast options this morning. Mrs. Rayguild is usually bustling with excitement in the mornings. Singing and humming along as she cranks out various delicious pastries, meat pies, and hot teas. She was quiet today. Hesitant to speak, with a look of... a look of terror, buried underneath a clearly fraudulent smile.

HALFING: You nod your head reluctantly, "Yes sir, as you command." then step off towards the armory. ``12 damned years..." mumbling to yourself as you weave through the fine marble halls of Mahn’sun. Sea life is thriving around you. The vastness of the ocean is separated by various coral building materials, stone accents, and a thin glass semi-circular tubing. The constant gentle buzz of warding magics is a constant companion through these passages.
Nestled at the bottom of the ocean between Nortrend and the continent of Phantazia, Mahn’sun is a thriving neutral collection of various sea-born and amphibious races. Though in recent years, travel between "surface dwellers' ' and the sea-folk has increased dramatically. This is due largely to the influence of Mahn’sun’s new Director of Operations Archwallace Thickskin. A Shar'k warrior turned monk, turned politician, with great ambition and ideas of a Universal World Union or UWU. You have been working directly with Archwallace for almost 12 years now. Starting with your accidental discovery of Mahn’sun on a fishing trip with your family. The smell of salt-water invades your memories, the violent crackling of thunder, and the tumultuous battering of the ocean’s breath against your fishing vessel.
AETHERLING: The world spins around you. Blue wisps of energy dance creating a beautiful aura. The feeling of weightlessness. Peace. You feel yourself being pulled together along the Current. (You manifest in a genderless humanoid specter like form and begin plummeting towards the earth) Terror and excitement battle in your heart. Your instinct is to scream but you don't feel like you have any control of your ability to breath. You continue plummeting. Flashes of green and blue fade as you clench your eyelids shut, anticipating the impact.
Gentle breezes rolling over the meadows. The sun's warmth caresses your skin. You sit on the edge of a floating chunk of earth. Miles above the rest of the world. Looking around you notice a handful of other floating bits as small as common stones and as large as a small home. Most of these are spherical collections of earth and plant matter that seem to grow a variety of flowers, herbs, and even small trees. As your focus narrows, the sound of chittering erupts. Sprites and fairies flutter about taking in your presence. Some, dare I say, attractive fairies have taken up very closely on the ground beside you, giggling and blushing. For the first time you see yourself as whole. Nude, but whole.

The wind howls, (CON saving throw DC 15 - on failure take 2 points cold damage) frost forms almost immediately on your eyes, face, and hands. Gusts of snow whip around the small ledge you find yourself lingering on. You stand high in the Alterac Mountains. Only a few peaks in the near distance are any higher than where you were teleported. Through the storming sprays of white dusty dry powder, you make out what seems to be a curving path directly ahead of you. To your right is a snow- and ice-covered cliff face. To your left and behind you are drop-offs and the hazy view of miles and miles worth of jetting earth and deep white snow.

What purpose does my ax and saw serve if not to feast on the flesh of God. And this flesh, so painfully, so graciously given to us... it is for the people. It builds them their homes. It heats their halls, roasts their meats, floats them across vast oceans! And that is only one part of flesh. What of the fruits? The branches, the vines, the roots themselves all sing and dance with life. All of it is equally as important as you and me, boy. All of it. Yet there is no grief to be had in their death. Honor. For as the trees give their very essence for our existence so too, do we, boy. Our lives are testimony to His work. Our flesh for His purpose. The gifts of the world are within us. Around us. Nothing without purpose dear child." Marq'i stops sharpening his ax for a moment and looks up, locking eyes with his son. "Boy... I love you."

2023.02.21 05:17 waffle538 Water spot remover caused newly powder coated wheels to darken?

Hi folks. I just had some wheels of mine powder coated. I'm told it was kingsport grey by prismatic. When I got the wheels, they were dusty, so I gave them a quick wash in the garage. Next thing I know, they've got water spots all over them. So I take some chemical guys water spot remover to them, and the wheels are now much darker than before. I'm just trying to wrap my head around what's going on here. Did I do something wrong? Did the powder coat shop do something wrong?

I feel I owe an apology for the few loyal readers who will get this notification after literal years expecting something else. To them, I am sorry. If I ever return to that project it will be as a re-write, and a restructure. The idea for this story came to me on a whim, and so it was written on a whim.
Next
As orbs of cerulean lightning began to tear hideous rents into the morning sky, the deckplates rumbled from the distant drums of the Savage realm. An unease passed through Elian, from the bones of its hull to its twin dorsal and ventral balloons. The navigator's powder blue surcoat ruffled endlessly as the breeze circled around him, rich with aether. Instead of profit however, the trail of aether had led them to misfortune. With quiet reverence he prayed to the Ancients under his breath. Just loud enough to reach the ship beneath his feet, but not the crew that hurried frantically up in the rigging and about the underdeck to shroud the auxiliary envelopes. On the deck below the aftcastle where he as the navigator stood, harpoons and rope were deftly stowed, the deck guns were quickly being reconfigured for their secondary but deadly purpose. On the forecastle, the ship’s singular copper plated aether cannon spun to life with a reassuring hum. Among those who were not arming or armoring the vessel for the inevitable ambush, powder-rifles and rescue chutes were distributed by Quartermaster Gribbins and his runners. The Captain, in spite of general grumbles of nepotism at his appointment, was in firm control of his ship. The spawn of Senatus Eyre-ro bellowed orders and attempted to hold morale as he went from aft to bow amongst his crew.
Everyone aboard the Spear of Terolas had done their duty to her, and their crewmates on its maiden voyage, except for him. Elian, who had been destined for this role since he could barely talk. He who could describe the patterns in the aether before he had even become attuned. He was the one who had failed them. Not a greenhorn deckhand, or a clumsy powderboy. Men were going to die because he’d allowed them to sail into a trap. The aetheric currents had been too clean, the trail too obvious. Not nearly enough cunning for a Leviathan dwelling so close to the homeland. He had been fooled by Savages, so confident in their safety so close to home. Now he recalled crystally his lessons in the Grand Aetherium.
The Ancients had driven the warmongers back in a series of battles, a grand assault, back to from whence they came. Not their fortress in the sky, but into the Savage’s realm. There the Savages had sprung their wicked trap. The nature of Aether itself was changed by the vicious attack that extinguished the Ancients, and closed the gateways that once connected the five realms. Only through immense sacrifice and the knowledge that the Ancients had entrusted to them had the colonists who remained survived. Now, the Savages had begun to return from whence they came, tearing holes in the sky their teachers had taught them to sail.
Elian tightly gripped the railing as the rents in reality grew, reaching out into the aether and searching. He drove the pounding of the drums, the rattling and shifting of the ship, his fear, his frustration, all of it from his mind. Shimmering streamers of prismatic light filled his mind’s eye as it made sense of information it was never meant to process. The aether was howling, flooding outward from the rift, rippling with the beat of the drum. The sky around them was absolutely flooded with aetheric energy , and that made the singular pulsing void all the more easy to spot.
There was only one void, and its displacement was quite similar to that of the Spear of Terolas. For a moment Elian was filled with hope, maybe even relief, but then his lips turned into a slight frown. Incursions by the Savage folk came normally in small groups, theorized to be limited by the temporary nature of the rifts.
There were no reports of single ships passing through the rift. The diminutive navigator’ face screwed with concentration as he scoured the space beyond the rift, straining his perception to the limits of his range. Elian felt a tingling at the base of his skull but he held his search for a few moments longer. It was in vain. There was only one. He withdrew his perception, leaning heavily on the railing, and absently rubbing the now warm scar at the back of his neck. As the Captain climbed the steps into the aftcastle towards the helm, Elian snapped a salute and called to him his report. “Captain! One vessel, low displacement. No abnormalities.”
The Captain placed a warm hand on his shoulder and nodded as he wheeled to look over the deck. It was not unlike what Elian's father had used to do before his spark had failed to manifest. Then he moved the hand to rest with the other on the ivory railing in front of him. “You hear that boys? There’s only one!” Captain Eyre-ro bellowed over the railing. “So find your courage lads, or did I sign a bunch of yellow bellied rock humpers?”
His challenge was met with a rowdy chorus of cheers and variations of telling the Captain to go fellate himself. Captain Eyre-ro gave a winning smile, put a hand on the wheel and ordered the ship to descend as he turned the wheel to starboard. The port side cannons on both the upper and under decks were loaded and primed pointed upward on their swivels. They would blow the Savage ship out of the sky the moment its masthead tore through the rift. If there was anything left to hit, the Aether cannon would reduce it to ash and cinders.
Elian’s pointed ears twitched as the spotter’s steam whistle screamed from underdeck, followed swiftly with the sounds of screams and the reports of powderguns.
From below, erupting from the clouds, was a scene out of many a sailor’s nightmare. Aether fiends formed a swarming dark pestilence of claws, fangs and poisonous stingers. Men young and old fought one another for shelter, but there was little to be found on the lower gondola. One man had the wits about him to deploy the anti-boarding nets, which fell heavily from the side of the ship to drape down over the lower auxiliary envelope. Then, a hiss sounded out from a series of copper pipes, casting a curtain of mist upon the swarm. After a loud series of clicks, it ignited, incinerating more than a fair number. The lower decks were flooded with the potent smell of noxious burning ichor mixed with sweet scent roasted flesh. Unfortunately more than a handful of the beasts were trapped within the inside the boarding net, and they were not idle. Their stingers punched through sailor’s leathers, their claws and fangs minced exposed flesh before they were battered with the butts of guns or skewered by a sailor’s knife.
Elian did not have time to dwell on their screams as the rift shrieked and the Savage built ship punched through the rift. It was small. Smaller than he had expected with a void that large. Probably because wasteful monstrosity was hewn of dense wood with patches of gleaming metal plating. On the upper deck of the Spear of Terolas the port side powder cannons fired true, dense shells of precious iron punching splintering holes into the Savage’s lower hull, and blessedly brought an end to the dreadful drumming. Then, upon the forecastle the Aether cannon whined before releasing its payload. Elian closed his eyes and shielded them with his arm. This did not keep him from briefly seeing an outline of the bones in his arm and a line of scarlet erupt from the end of the large gun. The resulting explosion rocked the Savage ship, and silenced the damnable drum. As the burning ship started to nose down the gunnery crew began to let out a raucous cheer. The cheer was quickly punctuated by thudding reports of return fire, as from shielded holes at the fore of the enemy ship, four long swivel gun barrels peered down contemptuously at them and opened up.
Elian was green. Most of the officers save the Quartermaster were too. Even a fair amount of the sailors had been learning the ropes. They were well trained. They had not seen combat. The aftcastle exploded into fire and shrapnel, and the helm splintered. Elian felt himself lifted from his feet, and thrown into the railing, before slamming back down face first to the deck. His limbs spasmed in pain as he tried to collect himself and his vision went white. He felt wet, hot and sticky. There was a sharp pain in his ribs that was making it hard to breathe. He tried to lift his head from the deck but found his limbs feeble and not up to the task, only managing to turn his head. He felt another set of thumps that could only be another bout of their own powder guns. How long had he been down here? The white in his vision slowly began to fade and the world blurrily came into view. He could see his hand. There was something on his hand. An eye? No, not just an eye, there was more. A bit of a nose. A lip. The rest was pretty torn up. Panic slowly rose in the haze. Was it his? Had he lost his face?
Elian blinked and realized he was being ridiculous. It wasn’t his face. That eye was brown. He had green eyes. Captain Eyre-ro had brown eyes. He felt the ship shudder and crack as a heavier round of impacts slammed into it. He felt The Spear of Terolas scream through the aether. The vessel was cracking, and this was her deathknell. An intense nausea filled him, and he felt bile rising up his throat pouch. His body curled feebly as it expelled his stomach's contents before his consciousness began to fade.
Elian returned to the world of the waking after what felt to him had been ages. There was little of his body that did not ache with an acute intensity. An experience he was far from accustomed to. He wagered the tips of his pointed ears were the only part of him that did not hurt. This is probably why it took him a moment to realize he was being hoisted up from beneath his shoulders. Whatever was happening to him was nearly effortless. He felt the heels of his boots being dragged across the deck, his eyes watering from both light and pain as he attempted to make sense of his surroundings. A blurry mass of light and dark slowly began to take focus, the black mass at the bottom of his vision once more familiar. The dark deck of the Spear of Terolas, its leviathan scale glinting in the sunlight almost as it had the day they had first set sail.
Now it seemed horrid and twisted. Several powder cannons lay warped and splayed out of their mountings. The aft castle had collapsed, its bone supports shattered and splintered. The dead and dying lay contorted upon her deck. Their blood pooled slick, almost hidden in the shine of the chitin. Sailors who had cut the clouds before he was a twinkle in his father’s eye. The sons of men far more important than even the most prodigious navigator. All of which he had sworn to serve. Now Savages loomed and looted over their corpses upon the slanted deck. He fought off nausea as eyes shifted downward, to the sun beaten and weathered arms that hauled him backwards. Not scaled or furred, or even feathered like some of the wilder accounts of Savage encounters he’d heard. They were wiry and firm, almost like iron rods forked beneath his armpits. More importantly, most of one was missing. Judging by the scars that ravaged what remained of their stump below the elbow, He guessed it had been gnawed off. Gruesome, but Elian struggled to have pity for a Savage who would soon attempt to do far worse to him.
The young navigator let out a breath of surprise, and perhaps a less masculine noise of discomfort as they were suddenly set down. The arms slipped out from under his shoulders and he found himself sitting back against a crate of some kind with his legs sprawled in front of him. Then a shadow fell over Elian as the Savage loomed over him.
She was not as tall as he imagined a Savage to be, though she certainly towered over him. Even if he were grown to his full height, he was confident it would be no contest. Her face was hidden behind a mask of beastly visage, and armor plates protected her torso that would make a Senatus blush. That did not stop him from giving her the best glower he could manage as she took a handful of his surcoat. Even through her monstrous metal mask, Elian could see the surprise in her eyes. She gripped the hem tighter almost in disbelief, lifting it closer to her face and rubbing her thumb over the powder blue fabric’s exterior.
“You’re a Scholar, pup?” The one armed Savage woman suddenly demanded, releasing it and gripping him roughly by the chin.
Elian blinked, taking a moment to comprehend that the words coming out of her mouth were not gibberish to his ears. Then his eyes widened as he doubled back on what the Savage woman was saying. He thought she’d just been after the valuable fabric. Or perhaps the Savages had posited that the light blue cloth signified his role upon a ship. But to know of the way of the Grand Aetherium? And to speak even such a vulgar version of the Old Speech? A sinking pit formed in the young navigator’s stomach.
His thoughts were interrupted before he had too much time to dwell on the implications.
“And you understand me,” The fanged snout of the woman’s mask declined as he felt her eyes scrutinizing his face. “You know things. One way or another we will learn them,” She growled with contempt and a worrying look in her eye.
With a frightening burst of movement, he found himself once again hoisted, this time swiftly over the woman’s shoulder with enough force to drive the breath from him. He heard her chuckle sadistically as he wheezed. “Can’t have you dying before then.”
The Savage’s vessel was even more staggering to behold in person, even from Elian’s awkward perspective upon the woman’s shoulder. Crossing in between the vessels, which had been hitched side by side, had been harrowing. A mere plank of wood and the will of a Savage had been all that had separated him from the endless drop. The wood did not end there. He reasoned that more wood likely went into this one vessel’s creation than existed in every tree that he’d ever seen. Much of it was covered in slagged metal from where the Aether cannon had hit. He could even see Savage mechanists frantically toiling at a knot of pipework through a hole in the deck. The damage they had wrought to these animals had been more than superficial. Elian took quiet comfort in this. Between the Savages that had lain slain on the Spear and the main mast that appeared to be beginning to keel? He pondered how they intended to continue to sail. Or what had been their plan was to begin with. The six powder cannons pointing out from the starboard side were longer than he was tall, and large enough that Elian subsequently imagined himself being stuffed inside the gun’s wide bore. How they ever planned to hit another ship with such things he did not know. Then again, they did not appear to have even been prepared to fire. The amount of metal, and the amount of weight was simply wildly impractical for ornamentation. What then, was their purpose?
The woman shouted something, this time in a language wholly foreign to Elian. The cacophony of voices quieted a bit and he really came to understand he was surrounded by Savages. He had been since he woke up from his not so pleasant nap. Most of them had skin like the one who had snatched him from the Spear of Terolas, but others were fairer. One was dark, with skin almost like that of a Leviathan, and a stature to match the comparison. Most importantly though, this was the first Savage Elian had ever seen face to face.
His large form was sat on a stool hunched over a bundle of cord, His grotesque metal mask upon the deck next to his boots. The male Savage’s dark hair was shorn close to his scalp, except from his face. From beneath his nose to his unpointed ears, it hung like thick black moss. Elian shuddered and quickly decided that perhaps the metal masks weren’t so bad. They were…misshapen, as if they had been crafted from mud and clay. No, what they really looked like was a Velin afflicted with Corpse fever. His eyes lingered on the dexterous work of the man’s pudgy fingers, weaving cord into rope, pondering how such a thing was possible. Such meaty things were clearly meant for bashing in skulls rather than crafting, as primitive as it was. Soon however Elian sensed movement upon the ship’s quarterdeck and with effort, slightly turned his head.
In a dark, silver buttoned frock coat stood a figure straight from an archive illustration. It was not the clothes but rather the implement upon their face. A filtered mask fashioned from leather and ornamented brass, with lenses of shaded glass. A cold anger began to rise within Elian at this insolent Savage, and his arrogance. If it was made in mockery of, or if it was the genuine looted article, Elian did not care. He made his disdain clear upon his face. The heretic inclined his head slightly and barked something in their crude language back at the woman who carried him. He then descended the stairs with an infuriating amount of grace, the gaze behind the black glass feeling positively predatorial.
