The hyper-realistic artwork has been well-received by many Instagram users.
Images generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been making waves recently, and now one artist has used this technology to show “selfies from the past”. In two separate Instagram posts, artist Jyo John Mulloor posted a series of images showing famous personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar, Mother Teresa and Elvis Presley, taking a selfie.
“Upon retrieving my old hard drive, I discovered a treasure trove of selfies sent to me by friends from the past,” the artist wrote in the caption of the post. Mr Mullor also said that he used the AI software Midjourney to depict “selfies from the past” and photoshop to repaint the pictures.
Take a look below: Apart from the aforementioned names, the pictures also featured Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, former US President Abraham Lincoln, scientist Albert Einstein, Jamaican singer Bob Marley and Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara, among others.

Meanwhile, speaking of AI images, previously, a bunch of delightful pictures of Former US President Barack Obama and Ex German Chancellor Angela Merkel had taken the internet by storm. In an Instagram post, artist ‘Julian Al Art’ posted AI-generated images of the two former politicians enjoying their time together on a beach after their retirement.

2023.03.22 08:34 superluigi018 [N64] [2010-2015] Looking for a simple Mario 64 Rom Hack called "Super Mario 64 2"
Platform(s): N64/Emulator
Genre: Platformer
Estimated year of release: 2010-2015
Graphics/art style: Wintery, Reimagined Mario 64
Notable characters: Ice Big Bob-Omb
Notable gameplay mechanics: Had to get into the castle by climbing floating bricks
Other details: I remember playing a very basic mario 64 rom hack I found on youtube. Was called Super Mario 64 2. Very basic presentation for the video, no VO. Downloaded from description. The hack featured a winter overlay for the castle courtyard, and the outside of the castle was changed to have dark red bricks. In order to get inside the castle, you had to climb a staircase made of floating bricks to get into an alternate entrance. I can't recall the castle interior, but Bob-Omb Battlefield was also winter-themed and featured a Ice Big Bob Omb similar in texture to the Ice Bully. I can't find it again, and I have since deleted the file from the PSP I previously played it on, and I believe the video may have been delisted or deleted.

2023.03.22 03:12 kafetheresu Zoologist Atelier + Scent review
My partner and I recently visited the Zoologist atelieshowroom in Toronto. During our visit, we tried all the scents, including their unreleased scents. I hope you'll enjoy this review and find it useful for planning your trip!
Good to know:
- The atelier is by appointment only. You need to email them through their website to book an appointment. Each appointment is around 1.5hrs-2hrs long, so block out enough time for it.
- Zoologist is located on the OUTSKIRTS of Toronto. It's 45mins by car from downtown Toronto or 2hrs via public transit. Google maps has problems finding the location and will show results for Niche Essences (an outlet that carries various brands) as well. The correct address is the one near York University located in a strip mall.
- Bring water, and be prepared for a multi-sensory journey. You'll be smelling their entire catalogue of 20+ scents, and you want to give yourself room to enjoy it. If you're visiting Toronto, you might want to have this as a "main" activity since it does require a bit of planning/time/effort.
A little background: I've been collecting perfumes on and off since 1997. My family worked in beauty, so there would be free samples coming in *every day* when growing up. I fell off it for a while, then restarted an interest in 2013 with Le Labo's Santal33. I usually go for resins, ambers, incense, and wood; Serge Lutens makes up 70% of my collection. I have no prior experience with Zoologist.
Zoologist experience: Despite the plain exterior, the shop is beautifully decorated. On entry, there is a large monstera plant with a showcase of perfume in the front and center. The left side hangs large portraits of each Zoologist animal profiles, and the right has shelves with different types of bottles, samples and boxes to purchase. Interspersed are stained glass tiffany lamps and other curios. There's a feeling that you've just stepped into an art gallery, and the curated items: the lamps, the plant, the animal portraits, sets the tone for the Zoologist brand.
https://i.imgur.com/SLA1NWL.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ku4qve6.jpg Victor welcomes you to the space, and I remember thinking that he looks the part: on the day we met, he was wearing a dark blue suit with a yellow kerchief square. In absolute honesty: I did not know he was the founder and creative director of the brand. However I found him extremely kind and knowledgeable, and set upon us an olfactory journey guided by their lightest to heaviest scents.
https://i.imgur.com/SLA1NWL.jpg Scent impressions **technically we went through all the scents, but here's the ones that I remember. I wish I took down better notes**
Bat -- Fruit bat, not the vampire kind. Juicy opening loaded with tropical fruit, a hint of sharp greenness from vetiver. The earth-soil note is a bit funky and fertile, if you've dug around with garden mulch and compost you'll know it instantly.
Beaver -- Clean hamster or chinchilla. Woodshavings, dried food pellets, musky small animal. Rawhide leather, not the polished suede or upholstery you'll get from Tom Ford/more tame designer.
Bee -- hyperrealistic honey and beeswax. I thought it was rather sweet, almost cloying in the shop. Afterwards I went home and sprayed it on my bedsheets, and had a nightmare about being inside a bee colony. There's a dirt note in here which is smells exactly like the hot, warm interior of a hive.
Camel -- Nice, gentle incense. More of an incense stick than the smoky plumes of CdG Black or Dior Fahrenheit. A whiff of church, but not the full altar.
Chameleon -- Wonderful translucency and freshness. It wears like a creamy twist on a classic fougere to me with the ylang-ylang & cashmeran notes apparent, very wearable unisex fragrance
Cow -- Amish homestead farm in Philly/Vermont. Rolling grass hillsides, pastoral. Milk note comes in later, unpasteurized and full cream, but not sweet. Quite interesting layered with Chipmunk, like a milk-cookie combo
Civet -- Reads like a belle-epoque style perfume, glamorous and heady. Perfect for sitting in questionable bars swapping dead drops in a Cold War espionage movie.
Dodo (original) -- Blackberry canes in summer, absolutely delicious that falls away to a polarizing cumin. The cumin is so strong I could smell it from outside the door.
Dragonfly -- You know in
The Perfect Scent about with the avid descriptions of waterlilies, lotuses, slow-moving river in Egypt? How the entire team went down for a research brief, and the beauty of the river, the reeds, the sparkling shimmer of sun-on-water? I remember reading the book and being utterly disappointed with the actual perfume, this is what Les Jardins sur le Nil should smell like. This is the one I would buy for my friends as presents, along with the book, as a gift set.
Hummingbird -- feels like 24 Faubourg, but without the effervescence of the former. A rich nectar floral.
Hydrax -- Not for me but my partner really loved it; absolute barnyard.
Macaque (yuzu) -- Victor mentioned that he wears this one
Nightingale -- Extremely realistic plum blossom orchard. The tartness keeps it fresh and not too cloying. I think it loses a little of the tartness in the drydown, which is a warm and smooth sandalwood/labaduam. A very wearable scent that feels happy.
Scared Scarab -- Victor said it's inspired by the blue lotus flower, which is a type of incense used by ancient Egyptians. Definitely smells like it, a simmeringly hot sandy desert with an almost mineral-incense tone. Quite lovely and evocative, I prefer it to Camel.
Seahorse -- Warm sunny chillhop lofi beach. To me, it sounds like the new Gorillaz album track
Tormenta ft. Bad Bunny. Snowy Owl -- I liked this scent, but my partner loves it. It definitely smells arctic and icy, with hay and grass below. The mint note is lovely and addictive. I didn't care for the coconut since it reads 'tropical' to me but I appreciate how it adds a soft creamyness, like being enveloped in a cozy wintry nest.
Squid -- I love this. I told Victor it smells like HK and he was very confused. When I got home I realized why, the creamy toffee sweet opening and inky deep water smells is EXACTLY like drinking a super-sweetened milk tea while walking along the Avenue of Stars/Harbourfront at night. The ocean saltiness, the dried seafood and diesel boats while sipping your ultra-sweet condensed milk red tea at night. Absolutely gorgeous.
T-Rex -- lf you've ever melted plastic in a microwave or set your CPU on fire, smells like this. I like it cos its a very nostalgic scent, like burning your own CD-Rs
---
unreleased (R) -- Spicy gourmand, my partner adores it. It's sweet without being sticky, she guessed immortelle but actually it's a different heart note, however it does have that sunshine-y goldenness. I thought it smells like caramel pie crust.
unreleased (P) -- Sartorial fragrance that is extremely polished. If you like PdM or classic Penhaligon's style, you'll like this; the different notes played on the same violin, or different cloth cut into a classic 3-piece. I love this one and would buy it in a heartbeat.
unreleased (O.M) -- Cool botanical floral, the backroom of a florist shop in winter with the airflown tropical/hothoused flowers sitting in water.

2023.03.21 23:43 ackza Just a reminder, a large number of people believe in the conspiracy theory of the "Secret SPavce Program/BreakAway Civilization" and that STargate SG-1 is 100% Wormhole Xtreme and that episode was the most meta thing ever when watched by someone who is actually in the military and has gone off world
If that is real of course. if its not then no one has gone off world. But lets say it is all real and the Art Bell Project Camelot Ancient Aliens people are right and hah, i mean, is that not what STargate SG1 is based on? A live action movie of basically an Eric Von Danikan or a Zacharaya Sitchin book?
I even met Andrew D Basiago the guy who has millions of views, he has doctorate degrees, hes a lawyer in Washoington and ran for President, he was on art bell, lots of viewers /listeners, i met yim at a UFO convention talka small local event called ExoSD in 2011 he claimed to have gone to Mars through an elevator like jump room he called it, from a military underground base around el segundo california, theers even some crazy articles about him and obama and mars colonies and time travel in wired magazine because Obama white house actually put ouyt a pres release denying it like right out of a stargate sg1 episode
when you read about Bob Dean and the spanish exopolitics talk he did I mean that shit was so epic he is liek a character in Stargate sg1, like the Peldieans are like the tokrah or ancient or something, the anunaki from ancient sumer and egypt are the gould, lol, the symbiote is more hyperdimensional theyc laim in real life like in your body final fantasy spirits within style :D
I mean when you realize theers a lot of peopel who believe in this and, ya know, whgen you research it all its an amazing live action role playing military extra terrestrial sci fi game pretty much teh way you can imagine how many underground bases theer are and if the military does have 8 secret military space stations (why not?) and a base on the moon mars etc, and how we even have gotten into wars off planet and enslaved local lesser advanced humanoids to do our mining operations for naquida in rea life or whatever they call it, element 115? Ever hear of bob lazatr?
Bob lazar is like one of the scientits characters in stargate atlantis pretty much
STargate universe really made teh whole deal feel realistic with teh acting and seriousness of the politics etc
Its incredible to realize also that Wormhole Extreme could be like the way they do plausible deniability and make an inside joke for themselves
The whole thing, if real, if we do just have a secret spave program and a stargate type device in real life, and it is based on ancient alien tech and we do have small outposts on mars and tthe moon and a secret space fleet like teh prometheus, i mean, it would look a lot liek stargate sg1, and i feel like theer are many people in the military who use that show to maybe not go crazy after seeing real alien technology at era 51 etc etc? It would be a useful tool
But yeah just imagine its all real and that wormhole extreme episode becomes a bold inside joke, very bold. If its real then that episode is telling us exactly what is going on. It makes sense that like in any military organization theer is a top group that has all the lore and stories about them, the ones that become local legends within their community. I think in real life however a lot of peopel dont make it back when dealing with advanced ET races and its not as fun its probably extremely scarey to deal with a more advanced intelligence, the way they describe the weaponizedtelepathy ist scarey and not much any human can do to train to defend against it without some sort of electro magnetic sheilding or something like smanatha carter would help design
I feel like there is a lot of technology liek element 115 from even the joe rogan show now, when ob lazar wason, eh explained it, i feel liek element 115 is liek Naquida, and ya know, the Asgard are just the "good" grey aliens. etc etc
What do you think/ Anyone here into Project Camelot? They had like Hundreds of millions of youtube views hours of just regular interviews, nothing dangerous or worthy of banning for and during teh 2020 election because kerry interviewd peopel to simply talk about the "conspiracies" about teh election at the time i wont mnention, they had all their videos about REAL LIFE stargate projects ytaken down lol just another NID sort of signature move
the whole NID thing in stargate is also kidna scarey because we all know that idea of dark shadow CIA type groups are allreal and have been revealed mroe recebntly with wikileaks etc
i mean the Israeli space cheif SAID live on twitter and mainstream news back in late 2020 during the pandemic that ALIENS are real and the us and trump talk to them and that theres a galactic federation israel and uSA is in contact with and thats a fact, eh said that, so, u can call the space forces cheif of Israel a liar but why would he lie about that? makes no sense unles he stelling teh truth
OH AND THEN theers the old frien dfrom stargate atlantis THE TIC TAC UFO, predicted in THAT show, and made REAL off the coas of where i live san diego, chasoing aircraft carriers, RIGHT out of stargate atlantis
So i mean teh tic tac ufo, oh yeah guys i forgto, you ant ignore this
stargate program PROBABLY SI real, LOOK AT THE TIC TAC UFO, thats PROOF that theer ARE SOME sortof ET groups hgere underthe ocean on earth..... so imagine how much of the stargate show is just real life too. We have the stargate atlantis pods, or someone does! the puddle jumpers. THATS what teh TIC TAC UFOS weer REPORTED to look liek from f18 pilots
so yeah ima just go ahead and say yeah sorry toteh skeptics but the recent UFO news has kinda CONFIRMED stargate sg1 is basically real life. tahst why they let them film insidew the real NORAD lol thaey wouldnt do that unless something was up. that doesnt just "happen"

- While Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" is probably one of the crooner's best-known songs, it was originally very different. Turns out, we have Robert De Niro to thank for it! Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb were tapped to write music for Martin Scorsese's 1977 film, New York, New York, which stars Liza Minnelli and De Niro. When the duo previewed the songs they had written, De Niro thought the title track, which was connected to his character, was too lighthearted. Although Kander and Ebb said they thought De Niro seemed "pompous" in telling them to rewrite the song, they took the criticism to heart and ended up penning their new version of the song in just 45 minutes.
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite movie of all time, so it's honestly criminal that I've never done a deep dive into some behind-the-scenes moments from the film! John Hughes, known for his teen movies, ended up writing the script in just a few days in order to get a draft finished before the Writers Guild of America went on strike. The script was reportedly so strong that it was barely edited before filming started. The movie is widely considered to be a love letter to Hughes's Chicago hometown and is filled with references to his own upbringing and shots of the city's skyline. In fact, Hughes even gave Ferris the same address as his childhood home, and his bedroom reportedly resembled Hughes's.
- If I had to learn about this giraffe mating ritual, then it's only fair that you do too, okay? Unlike other animals, giraffes don't have a set mating season. Instead, they have an estrous cycle, which resembles a human menstrual cycle, except this cycle swaps blood for urine. When a male giraffe approaches a female giraffe, he begins to rub against her, which she takes as a signal to begin peeing. The male giraffe then tastes her pee to see if she's fertile, and thus, the mating ritual begins. A typical giraffe pregnancy lasts for 400–460 days. Male giraffes typically have no role in raising their offspring.
- In 2007, Lisa Nowak became the first NASA astronaut to be arrested when she drove across the United States to confront a woman who was dating a fellow astronaut with whom Nowak had also had a relationship. About a decade after graduating from the US Naval Academy, Nowak was selected to be an astronaut at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she specialized in robotics. Nowak said she was deeply affected by the 2003 Columbia space shuttle explosion because her best friend, astronaut Laurel Clark, died. Nowak told NASA that her children convinced her to continue on with her space career despite her unease.
- Despite what you might believe after watching The Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum was not a good guy. He had a long history of animal cruelty and was known for mistreating enslaved people and people with disabilities. He even reportedly hated the people who paid money to come see his exhibits. Barnum was allegedly frustrated that people were taking their time during visits to his museum, so he decided to post signs reading "This Way to the Egress" all over the place. He (correctly) believed that most of the visitors wouldn't know that "egress" meant "exit," so when they followed the signs, they ended up unknowingly leaving the entire museum. As a result, many people paid to reenter, bringing home even more money for Barnum.
- Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" is essentially History 101 in song form. The track name-drops 118 historical events from 1949 to 1989, including everything from pivotal moments in the civil rights movement to details from sports and pop culture history. Joel was inspired to write the song after having a conversation with Sean Lennon, who was then in his 20s, while in the recording studio. One of Lennon's friends allegedly said that it was a terrible time to be a young person. Joel, who was about to turn 40, reportedly said that his own younger years hadn't been that easy either.
- Coney Island's skyline looked a lot different back in the 1800s. The Brooklyn boardwalk was once home to a 200-foot-tall elephant-shaped hotel! The hotel, known as the Elephantine Colossus, was built in 1885 and contained 31 rooms, a concert hall, and a museum. The elephant's head housed an observatory, and its eyes served as telescopes. The real kicker was that the hotel was built several years before the Statue of Liberty was completed, so the giant elephant was often the first thing immigrants saw when they reached New York. At some point, the hotel was seen as gimmicky and lost most of its clientele. Soon, sex workers began moving in. In 1896, Elephantine Colossus burned down and was never rebuilt.
- During Ronald Reagan's 1966 California gubernatorial campaign, he began eating jelly beans in an attempt to curb his pipe-smoking habit. His jelly beans of choice were the Goelitz Mini Jelly Beans from the Herman Goelitz Candy Co. Once the company caught wind of Reagan's love for the treat, they began to send the politician a monthly shipment of candy and even gifted the governor with a custom jelly bean jar. After Reagan's two terms as governor ended, the company continued to send him jelly beans. In 1976, Goelitz debuted their latest creation: the Jelly Belly. Within two years, Reagan's entire jelly bean shipment shifted to include only Jelly Belly jelly beans.
- There are two main groups of whales: baleen whales, which include species like the blue whale and the humpback whale; and toothed whales, consisting of orcas, belugas, and sperm whales. While you probably guessed that toothed whales are named as such because they have teeth, baleen whales have baleen plates in their mouths, which help them filter out krill and other food. Toothed whales also have a "melon" in their foreheads. The melon is a mass of tissue that helps with communication and is crucial for echolocation, which they use to find food and to navigate underwater.
- In 1997, construction on Disneyland's California Adventure Park was halted after Princess Diana was killed in a limo accident in a Paris tunnel on Aug. 31. California Adventure was supposed to include a ride called Superstar Limo, which involved guests boarding a limo and embarking on a high-speed chase through some of Los Angeles's biggest landmarks in order to get to the Disney offices in time to sign a huge movie contract. Riders also had to evade the paparazzi. Once the ride ended, passengers were encouraged to buy mock tabloids featuring the pictures the "paparazzi" had taken of them. Following Diana's death, Disney knew they could no longer debut the ride. Soon, they began to brainstorm alternative ideas to replace the limo theme.
- Donald Gorske, who is known as the ultimate Big Mac fan, has reportedly eaten at least one McDonald's Big Mac every day for the past 50 years. As of May 2022, Gorske believes he has consumed about 32,340 Big Macs. He told Guinness World Records that he typically eats two Big Macs a day, although he revealed that at one point, his daily diet included nine burgers! "May 17, 1972, was the day I got my first car," Gorske said. "I drove to McDonald’s, ordered my first three Big Macs, went in the car, and ate them. And I said right there that I’m gonna probably eat these the rest of my life, and I threw the cartons in the backseat and started counting them from day one." Despite his Big Mac diet, Gorske and his wife say that doctors have given him a clean bill of health.
- Although you probably picture Queen Elizabeth II wearing one of her signature colorful skirt suits, her fashion history is actually quite fascinating! Elizabeth was photographed wearing pants only once during her entire reign. In 1970, she was reportedly interested in updating her look, and asked her tailor for a custom pantsuit to wear during her royal tour in Australia. It's safe to assume that Elizabeth wasn't too fond of the outfit, as she was never again seen wearing pants in public. In order to maintain professionalism and avoid any type of fashion mishap, her dress hems were always cut below the knee.
- In 1986, Clint Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel, California, in part because he wanted to overturn the town's strict law regarding ice cream sales. Eastwood announced his intention to run for office in 1985 after he reportedly found the City Council very difficult to work with when he wanted to turn property he owned into office space. He also cited a 1929 law in Carmel that banned the sale of ice cream cones as another reason for his campaign. In April 1986, he defeated incumbent Charlotte Townsend. His first order of business? He removed from office all of the people who supported the ice cream ban, thus allowing the sale of ice cream cones in Carmel for the first time in decades.
- Chances are, you read George Orwell's Animal Farm in school. In the novel, a group of animals team up to rebel against the farmer who owns them, only to end up living in a communist dictatorship led by pigs. Although Orwell said that the book was the first time he had successfully been able to blend politics and art, he had a hard time finding a publisher. Several publishing houses turned down the book because they felt uneasy about its political stance. Secker & Warburg ultimately agreed to publish Animal Farm, and the book became a hit and was even used by the CIA as a propaganda tool during the Cold War.
- In 1928, Huey Long was elected governor of Louisiana on a promise of helping people who had been neglected by the federal government. He soon had his sights set on Washington and won a Senate seat. But before leaving for DC in 1932, he had the lieutenant governor replaced by two successors who promised to follow Long's commands. In the Senate, he created the “Share Our Wealth” program, which many thought was part of his bid for the presidency. In 1935, Long was assassinated by a political rival. Despite his death, his impact in the state lived on. In 1940, a study showed that rural schoolchildren not only had no idea that Long had been killed but also believed he was president.
- The Real Housewives franchise put Bravo on the map for its depiction of the wild and wacky antics of wealthy women around the country, but it originally looked like a much different show! Scott Dunlop, the original producer of the Real Housewives of Orange County, got the idea for the show in 1986 when he moved from Los Angeles to Coto de Caza, one of the world's largest gated communities, located in Orange County, California. Dunlop began to notice that many of his female neighbors spent their days shopping and playing golf while their husbands went to work.
- The first meal eaten on the moon included bacon bits, peaches, sugar cookie cubes, and a pineapple-grapefruit beverage. Bacon reportedly had a long history when it came to space travel. It was a staple during the Gemini missions and became a favorite among many astronauts. Despite all of the bacon love, it's since disappeared from space menus. Now the closest thing to bacon is a sausage patty that has to be rehydrated with warm water before being eaten.
- Oscar Gamble, a baseball player who spent over 20 years in the major leagues, was known not only for his on-field play but also for his Afro, which sparked quite the controversy. In 1973, Gamble arrived at the Cleveland Indians training camp sporting an Afro. Although many Black basketball players had Afros, the hairstyle wasn't too popular among baseball players. Baseball was often seen as more conservative, and during the 1970s, the Afro was associated with the Black Power movement. Gamble's hair quickly became controversial. "People took one look at that hair and thought I was a bad guy," Gamble said in 1979. "There were some sportswriters who wouldn’t talk to me. They thought I was some kind of militant, with my beard and my hair."
- In December 1990, Iben Browning, who claimed that he was a climatologist, predicted that a major earthquake was going to hit the St. Louis area on Dec. 3. In New Madrid, a Missouri town located on a fault line, people began stockpiling supplies, while others left town completely. Browning reportedly used weather patterns to make his predictions, although his exact methods were never publicized. Although scientists didn't vocally deny Browning's claims, it was believed that they didn't support his prediction, since it's impossible to predict an earthquake. The earthquake never happened. In fact, the area has not faced an earthquake at the magnitude Browning predicted in the three decades since.
- While kangaroos are known for their hopping abilities (they can jump about 25 feet in one go!), they are unable to go backward because their big feet and long tails prohibit any backward movement. This anatomical hindrance has since been used by their native Australia as a symbol. The kangaroo was reportedly included on the Australian coat of arms to represent the idea that Australia is a nation that is always moving forward.
- And finally, Elouise Cobell, who was also known as Yellow Bird Woman, fought for Native Americans to have control over their land and finances. Cobell was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, where her family did not have running water or electricity. Her great-great-grandfather notably stood up to the US government in the 19th century. When Cobell was 4 years old, her father built a one-room schoolhouse that she attended until she was in high school. Cobell reportedly took notice of her family's complaints about the Bureau of Indian Affairs, an agency that many suspected mismanaged the profits from land and trusts owned by Native Americans.

2023.03.21 20:55 JordanFromStache Bob Ross & the Fine Art Community
I've been thinking about Bob Ross's place in conversation of art and art history.
As far as I can sense, Bob Ross is deeply well liked among most people (myself included) for his kindheartedness and gentle voice as he teaches his painting techniques on his PBS show, The Joy of Painting. I've also gotten the sense that there's a large part of the (fine) art community that completely disregards him as an artist, his work, or his techniques.
I've heard arguments that he is more of a teacher than an artist (which, some college professors might slightly also feel the sting of that statement), but I personally think his artistic ability shouldn't be understated.
He was stationed in Alaska when he was in the military and fell in love with the beauty of nature and the mountains he saw. To capture this beauty he was moved to paint them and, by all accounts, taught himself how to oil paint. By necessity, he learned to paint quickly he said, as he wanted to complete paintings during his short lunch break.
I've heard his art categorized as 'Kitchy' or 'motel art', which is fair. Landscapes a lot of time fall into that realm, and most don't hold any deaper meaning beyond "oh, pretty scenery". But, I feel like the artist's passion should be taken into account. He wasn't so much painting landscapes because they were the art he liked, categorically. He painted landscapes because of the joy he found in nature and he wanted to capture that joy in both his painting and the process of painting. As you watch him paint any piece, he's quite literally beaming with describing mountains, clouds, trees, etc. I've seen art in museums that are modern and/or abstract art that half of the relevance of the work was the emotion the artist had while making it or the emotion they put into it. Bob Ross has a similar way of putting emotion into his art to convey feelings, it's just that it is put into landscapes. Plus, landscape painting are plentiful in museums. In fact, there was a time where still life's were a big subject of paintings in Art History, a subject of which I completely find little to no excitement in.
Another criticism I have heard was how some serious painters don't think Bob Ross's technique is all that great or that nothing of artistic importance can be gleaned from his videos. But, I humbly disagree with such statements. By all accounts, he developed his own style, (My mistake, I got my recollection messed up. He learned how to paint from William 'Bill' Alexander, a painter who hosted a PBS painting program prior to Ross, but) the style he adopted and practiced was more painting than drawing, which is a good thing, in my opinion, when it comes to painting.
His techniques actually show a somewhat deep understanding of form, visualization, spacing, lighting, and color. For example: it is not always the best idea to paint/draw EXACTLY what the eye is seeing. Sometimes you have to lie about lighting, etc to make it look correct visually. Bob Ross frequently did this. He would, more often than not, know where the trees would look best, the height of the tree that would best compositionally, where the peaks of the mountains looked best at, where the highlighted ridges of the mountains should cut, etc. And when he did a 'happy accident's, he was able to reimagine and bring that mistake back into the composition.
His control of the medium should be recognized to. He was great at mixing his paints to bring out the correct colors he was looking for (and quickly, on the spot during his shows). He also had great control of his tools, being able to paint with a brush and pallette knife, achieving good results. He knew how to use the pallette knife to make a mountain side or cabin and the brush to make trees by dabbing his brush and pond reflections of those trees with just a couple strokes. Some elements of his techniques could fall under Impressionism.
And, one of his most important contributions is his show. Through his show, his easy to comprehend teaching style and his calm instructions, he introduced many people to art. Art can feel snobby and pretentious sometimes, and a lot of people see the art community as that, as well as some art as brooding/angst/angry or very high class, pious, and sophisticated. Bob Ross brought the process of making art (and oil paintings no less, one of the more historically high class mediums) to the masses, showing people that painting can be fun and joyous and that anyone can do it. Sure, not everyone will make art that is museum quality, but I don't believe that's the purpose of art, and it never was. Art is an expression of the artist. And even if some folks out there are painting some mountains and happy little trees and expressing themselves through art and enjoying themselves while doing it, than that's plenty good enough.

2023.03.21 17:27 pictureperfectpeople 100% alpaca wool?
Hi! New knitter here. I bought two sets of 100% alpaca wool (Andean Treasure & Alpaca DK) from wecrochet a while back to make sweaters with. In my excitement (and being a naive new fiber arts hobbyist) I didn’t bother to research first about how much alpaca stretches out in garments and why they’re not good choices for sweaters/cardigans. I now know alpaca is a great choice for scarves or shawls, but I’m not someone who wears these very much, and no one in my immediate family/friends circle does either (or else I would just make a bunch of scarves and gift them).
Has anyone’s alpaca sweater held up over the years? Wondering if I should just go for it anyway and make it slightly cropped to start to account for stretching. Or could I try to make an open cardigan? Something that has more drape and is meant to be oversized? I’ve spent $100 on these yarns and would love to be able to salvage them for wearable use if it’s possible. Thanks in advance!

Letters from Boarding School
[A/N: This chapter beta-read by Lady Columbine of Mystal.] [

Private Communication From: Thwicca of Faz’Reep, currently resident on Earth [Sol 3/0]
To: Saduk of Faz’Reep, currently resident on Triton [Sol 8/8]
Reason for Communication: Keeping in touch because otherwise Mom will freak
Communication Begins Hi, Father!
First off, how are you doing? I heard from Serena that the big brains out that way pulled off another cool stunt with hybrid tech. I hope nothing exploded this time. Mind you, the way I understand things, you learn lots of stuff when things explode, so … meh. Blow stuff up, but stay safe, okay? Two artificial tentacles says, ‘my dad is badass’ but four artificial tentacles would say, ‘my dad is a klutz’.
Yeah, I learned that word off one of my friends. It’s not a swear, honest. It just means someone who’s always being clumsy.
Anyway, a funny thing happened earlier. I was coming back to my room when I ran into Pograk. He’s doing really well, by the way. There’s a tabletop wargaming society (lots of small-scale terrain, and rolling dice. I think you would enjoy it) and he seems to be enjoying himself there. Or at least, he’s less grumpy than normal, so there’s that.
He asked me where I was going, and I said I was coming here to write this letter. He didn’t seem to really understand what I meant. Casual communication must not be a thing with the Tannarak. Anyway, I explained as best I could that sometimes parents just want to hear from their kids that they’re doing okay, not just keep it to when things are going wrong.
Don’t really know if I got through to him, but hey, you can only do what you can do.
So anyway …

Private Communication From: Pograk of Tannarak, currently resident on Earth [Sol 3-0]
To: The Equal-Above-All, currently resident on Tannarak [Home Star 11-0]
Reason for Communication: Reminder of continued existence
Communication Begins Greetings to my Progenitor, the Equal-Above-All.
I trust that this communication finds you in good health, with no palace plots threatening your well-being. First, allow me to assure you that no harm has befallen your offspring; I continue to be healthy and unharmed, despite the hellish environment that crowds all around my habitat while I sleep.
This is neither an after-action report nor a debriefing, for no significant events requiring either one have taken place since I was placed here upon Earth to attend a human-style education. I have remained alert to the possibility of earthquakes or tsunamis or hurricanes, but none of the expected catastrophic events have transpired yet.
The human engineers who maintain my habitat have assured me that it would easily survive an earthquake or a hurricane. When I brought up the possibility of a tsunami, one of them explained that the ocean is eighty kilometres away. I did not see their point; have you
seen the images of some of these tsunamis? Perhaps humans can survive them better than we can, being so used to submerging themselves in dihydrogen monoxide, and that is why they are so careless about the possibility.
But it is no use arguing with humans. I have found that they either make references that I do not understand or look at me in a way that means I have said something they do not understand. Or they laugh. Human laughter is strange and grating, as you have undoubtedly learned.
Irrelevant human attitudes aside, I am writing this as a result of a conversation I had with Thwicca. She was perambulating toward her habitat in the middle of the day, and I asked her if she was suffering from an issue that required her to retreat to her normal environment. Her answer was puzzling—she intended to write a message to her progenitor as some of her friends do, filled with everyday events—and so I have chosen to do the same, in the hopes that it will afford me some insights into human culture.
Unfortunately, it does not appear to be doing so yet …
*****
Thwicca to Saduk (continued) So anyway, we had an amazing game of soccer last Saturday. Our team’s been renamed The Bubbblers (thank the Progenitors they didn’t call themselves the Thwiccas, I guess) and we kicked their butts up one side of the field and down the other. I only had to save something like three goals, but the other team complained (as usual) that we had an unfair advantage; that is, me.
I have since programmed the sound of a raspberry (and I
still don’t know why they named it after the fruit) into my vocaliser. It’s
such a useful sound.
The swim team wants me to join up as well, but I’ve had to slap my tentacle to the floor on that one, yet again. It’s like I keep having to explain to them that I might be good
in the pool, but when it comes to diving I’m slightly less useful than a Tannarak heat gun on a warm summer day here on Earth (and high-diving, as you say yourself, can just plain bite my upper left tentacle. It looks horribly dangerous, even for Earth). I’ll keep doing it (swimming, not diving) as a hobby, but only that.
There’s a big chess tournament coming up soon, and I’m looking forward to it. So are the Bubbler Studies guys; apparently they get more and more insights into how our neural webs operate each time they watch me playing chess. I guess for anyone else it would be weird having a bunch of guys staring at my tentacles and braincase instead of the board when I’m playing, but I’ve gotten used to it.
Oh, and just for fun, I’ve planted a little garden next to my habitat. I’ve got my favourite flowers growing in it, but I rarely weed, except when they start choking out the flowers. As a human would put it, I don’t have the heart to kill plants unless I have to. They’re all precious and beautiful to me.
In other news …
*****
Pograk to Equal-Above-All (continued) Unfortunately, it does not appear to be doing so yet, but I
have happened upon another means of gaining much the same information. This was, in fact, due to Thwicca. As we have both observed, she is decidedly insane even by Faz’Reepi standards, but I do have to admit that she has chosen not to hold the previous behaviour of our species against me. There are many human students who appear to hold her in some level of high regard, and she introduced me to them in a polite manner, and even rebuked them when they initially made fun of me.
I must read again the definition of ‘friend’ in the dictionary that was supplied to us. It is almost beginning to make sense to me now.
These young humans have many games that they play between themselves. We will not speak of the submerging in molten lava. There is another game, played in an open field, where they run about with great speed and kick a ball to one another. Thwicca has confirmed her brain-heated nature by joining in such games. Not in moving about the field, for her motivation tentacles would not allow her the requisite speed, but in defending the home base, or ‘goal’ area, for her team. She appears to be not totally inept at this sport, despite the horrific danger inherent in potentially overtaxing her heat-suit.
I was offered a chance to play the same game that she demonstrated to you upon the ship. It seems there is no shame to be had from your defeat at her tentacles; here on Earth, she is seen as a formidable player for her age, and regularly beats human opponents of recognised skill. However, I turned the offer down, as I did not wish to be seen as copying everything she did.
She also appears to be cultivating some native species of ‘plant’ in a patch next to her habitat, in a pattern I have trouble discerning. When I queried her as to the reasons for doing this, she said something about how she ‘likes’ them. They can do nothing for her, so why does she favour them? I also declined her offer to create a similar patch next to mine, because I did not see the sense in it.
This did not leave me without a pastime to follow. As I previously said, I have made the acquaintance of several human students who study what they call
tabletop wargaming. You can imagine my interest there, my Progenitor. An opportunity to observe humans gaming out their battle strategies and to learn their weaknesses, should an opportunity ever arise to make use of them.
Curiously enough, the wargaming society does not study space battles, but rather historic warfare as has taken place on the surface of Earth. Nor does it make use of computer simulation, although they have the technology to do so. Instead, the students hand-make the simulated terrain, and
hand-paint individual soldiers for their armies.
I watched such a simulated engagement, adjudicated by simple cubical random-number dice, playing out a single battle in a single war covering four years, several centuries ago on Earth. And right then and there, I was taught the most important lesson I will ever learn in my time here. For I could not follow the strategy on either side; moreover, the player starting with lesser numbers, sure to lose (or so I expected) somehow won out a desperate victory through unconventional maneuvering of his pieces.
This is the lesson in short: human strategy is a combination of brilliance and madness, and I am hard put to tell one from the other until all is said and done.
Initially, I thought I must be mistaken, for (as you know) I have been taught by the best available tutors in the art of warfare. But then I watched more games and was enthralled by the deep and unfolding layers of their planning. Upon gaining my own pieces (and spending endless hours painting them to match the images that were supplied to me) I launched my own campaigns against the other players, and found myself sorely wanting. In my defence, I have been told that I have talent, but I still have a way to go. I expect to win my first battle any day now.
Of course, this presupposes that I survive Thwicca’s insanity …
*****
Thwicca to Saduk (continued) In other news, I finally got a chance to ask Sergeant Harris for the chance to do something I’ve been wanting to do since
forever. You know those firearms they carry, where it actually ignites fire
inside the weapon, and the explosion propels the bullet out of the barrel? I asked him if I could learn more about them, and maybe see how they work. Just the materials technology that goes into them so they can withstand such high temperatures and multiple explosions is utterly fascinating to me.
Also, just saying, the fact that these weapons have been around since long before they ever put a human into space, and they’re still using the same basic arrangement of moving parts? That just flipped my tentacles but good.
How do I know that? Well, I asked, and Sergeant Harris very kindly took me and Pograk (because he seemed interested) to what he called a ‘firing range’. First, he disassembled his pistol, then he explained how it all worked as he put it back together. Levers, pivots and springs. Such simple devices, for what they do. Then after he made sure we could damp our audio pickups and polarise our faceplates, he fired off a few demonstration rounds.
The next bit’s the coolest thing that’s happened to me since I got to Earth. I mean, apart from meeting all my friends and learning to play chess. (And soccer. That’s pretty cool too. But still don’t tell Mom.)
First, he showed me how to hold the pistol, and where I
didn’t want my tentacles to be when it fired. Then he made sure it was unloaded (and showed me how) and jerked at it while I was holding it, to make sure I could maintain my grip.
And finally … he let me fire it.
I didn’t drop it, and I wasn’t blinded or deafened. In all honesty, I didn’t hit the target anywhere near the middle either, but I didn’t
care. It was
amazing. I had done something none of our species has ever done before.
I pulled the trigger on a weapon that uses fire as a propellant. (Don’t tell Mom about that, either.
Ever.)
Sergeant Harris offered Pograk a chance to fire it too, but he chose not to. I suppose he finds it boring next to heat guns.
Oh, well. His loss.
Best. Day. Ever.
Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say …
*****
Pograk to Equal-Above-All (continued) Of course, this presupposes that I survive Thwicca’s insanity, because this next tale is going to make your claws curl. Mine still feel a little weak.
Classes had ceased for the day and I was passing by Thwicca when she asked one of the human guards a question about his weapon. I was of course interested in the answer, so I stopped to listen. He did not immediately produce it to answer her, but instead invited her to go with him to a ‘firing range’. She saw me nearby and asked if I wanted to accompany them, so naturally I agreed. Up until that point, I had researched much about human weapons, but there is a vast difference between research and actual experience, as we both know.
At the firing range, the human guard disassembled his weapon with blinding speed. I was astonished at both his skill and the low technology that was revealed once it was in pieces. The reassembly process was educational, and I suspect I would be able to do it myself, if shown a few more times. I thought that would be all of it, after we were cautioned to lower the sound and light inputs for our heat-suits and the human demonstrated that his weapon was indeed in working order by attacking a paper target with it.
I will say now that both the noise and the flare of
actual chemically created flame from the muzzle of the weapon were daunting, even though I was fully aware it was a controlled demonstration. Just the potential chemical energy in one ‘cartridge’ would be enough to dissolve my entire body into undifferentiated slush, as the safety vids have warned over and over. The attached metal pellet—the ‘bullet’—would not even have to strike me.
The human, just by the way, was able to hit the target exactly where he wanted to, with apparent ease. I suspect him to be one of their elite soldiers, which only makes sense. I am a high value asset, after all.
But what happened then was entirely unexpected. The human unloaded the weapon and showed Thwicca how to hold it, then ensured that she had a firm grip … then
reloaded it and allowed her to fire it herself! My Progenitor, I watched a Faz’Reepi handle a human weapon and
actually hit a target with it, on her first try! Not only did she do well enough that she would rate as ‘shows promise’ if she were a Tannarak warrior, but she actually
chose to activate the firing mechanism when she had to
know there was a hugely exothermic reaction going on less than a claw-length from her tentacle-tip!
Worst of all, she seemed to positively
enjoy the experience. In my opinion, this merely reinforces my personal theory that she is clinically insane and has been placed on Earth for study and to keep her away from other Faz’Reepi.
When the human offered the weapon for me to fire, I intelligently declined. I managed to pass it off as being bored with the whole thing, instead of rightly cautious. What thinking being sets off an explosion more or less contained within their own hand, anyway? Give me a nice safe heat-gun any cycle of the sun.
So yes, my Progenitor, I offer you warning that humans are infinitely more dangerous than we had ever considered. Not only are they hell-worlders, easily manipulating materials and energies that we cannot, but they can also turn Faz’Reepi (and likely others as well) from mere pretend warriors into an actual threat. Of course, they would need to recruit equally insane soldiers for their force.
Unfortunately, they seem adept at infecting others with their madness.
In closing …

Thwicca to Saduk (continued) Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say right now. I’m looking forward to seeing you and Serena again. If you talk to Mom before I do, tell her how much I miss her and the others, and I can’t wait to see them again. It’ll be great to see Faz’Reep at the end of the year, and to be able to go outside without a heat-suit. Though I’m pretty sure I’ll miss Earth when I do go home again. It’s really growing on me, especially the plants (get it?), and all my friends are a bunch of fun too.
All the hugs,
Your little wriggler,
Thwicca

Pograk to Equal-Above-All (continued) In closing, I reaffirm that I am your dutiful offspring. Should I survive the ever-present dangers of merely existing here on Earth, I will return to my rightful place on Tannarak with all the information I have been able to glean from my time here. It will be a relief not to have to rely on non-Tannarak for my very survival.
Respectful salutations,
Pograk

Letters from Boarding School
