Stats
Power: N/A
Speed: N/A
Range: ? (Hard to tell.)
Durability: D
Potential:A
Stand Ability:『Mio Mao』is unique in that it began powerless, and it even currently has no entirely battle centered abilities, but it makes up for such by having a very large plethora of possible abilities, currently depending mostly on passerby and other civilians to fight. The abilities will be split into “Mio” and “Mao”, as I use their meanings to create the abilities. Let’s start with Mao. The Mao section of abilities is called “The Coarse”. The Coarse has the abilities of “quality stealing”, manipulation of people without strong minds(passerby’s for standoffs sake), to revert a “finished” object back to an unfinished state, increased impact of the users words on people under the age of 19, and creation of monoamine oxidase. The Mio section of abilities is called “The Treasury” . The Treasury the abilities of “declaring ownership” of something, to “deposit” or “withdraw” one million, instantaneous Cherry Blossum Growth(only one every 15 minutes by default), and, when the user found out about Mio(the water-enhancer company) gave the user a power within the company equal to a Co-owner.
Mao further explanations: The “quality stealing” ability is only usable non-living man-made objects. Objects with their quality stolen will become less well constructed, such as a house having a worse foundation or a plane having a faulty landing mechanism, or a bridge being more likely to collapse. The manipulation of weak minded individuals is limited to either quickly rallying a mob or calming a mod down, and the opponent will never be included in any fighting scenarios. The reverting of finished things to an unfinished form can also only be done to non living man-made things, and things it can do include but are not limited to: removing a houses wall paint, removing one of the pillars of a building, and removing the concrete of a road. Due to the extra impact of the words of Johannes on younger people, he can influence them into helping him in fights or schemes quite easily. And finally, monoamine oxidase is, by definition, an enzyme that deaminates monoamines: it destroys excessive amounts of many biologically active monoamines, as serotonin, epinephrine, or histamine. Or condensed, it causes depression. Johannes can manifest this within a person’s brain through physical contact, but it’s not as if it would do much other than lowering the opponents moral.
Mio further explanations: Declaring ownership of something is more or less to make it so that any 5 by 5 feet square of land that Johannes is standing on, when somebody other than him stands or otherwise on it, can trigger the police to arrive, as it’s “Private Property” owned by Johannes. I the time the police arrive are dependent on the arrival times of the police in the specified area. “Withdrawing” or “depositing” one million works as it allows for Johannes to “deposit” a million yen into allowing him to use his instant Cherry Blossom growth skill, which he will get by “withdrawing” one million yen(which comes from money and coins lost in peoples couches or like 2-3 dollars from rich people from all over the world, instantly Converting to yen. His instant Cherry Blossom growth allows him to, you guessed it, instantly grow a 40-50 feet tall Cherry Blossum tree from anywhere within 10 meters of him, letting him climb to roofs or lift the opponent or other shenanigans. Finally, the Mio water-enhancer company is basically a mini-speedwagon foundation for Johannes; but only the money or specific requested items part.
『Mio Mao』has an “A” in potential as Johannes can expand his abilities even further by discovering new meanings of “Mio” or “Mao”. This includes slang and possibly false, even if it was created as a joke, all that matters is if the user believes it to be a real application. Let me explain where each ability came from: in Chinese, Mao man’s a lot of things. It means: hair, feather, down, wool, mildew, mold, coarse or semi finished, young, raw, careless, unthinking, nervous, scared, (of currency) to devalue or depreciate. I’m sure you can find find where each power comes from. Secondly, MAO also stands for Monoamine Oxidase, which is one of the depression chemicals. Mio means “Mine” or “My Own” in both Spanish and old Italian. Mio is also used as an abbreviation of of “Million” sometimes as well. Somehow, Mio is also from words regarding Cherry Blossoms. Finally, Mio is also a water-enhancer company.
Appearance:『Mio Mao』is a stand composed of two objects, one representing The Treasury and the other The Coarse. The Coarse is a small white marble with a small section of it being an orange color, that feels surprisingly fluffy, like a feather. The Treasury is a small unpure brass ring, with the words “Live, Love, and” with the third word being unreadable, created as part of the ring. Johannes has to be wearing The Treasury on one of his fingers to use it’s abilities, and he must have The Course on his person somewhere to use it.
User lore: Johannes is currently 23, and has had a rather complicated upbringing. He’s born in the slums of Chicago, having an Indian-Mexican Heritage. He gets abandoned, as you do, and lives simply by getting lucky. Whenever he passes out from wounds or hunger or thirst, he wakes up having been saved by a person who puts him back on the street as soon as possible. He’s been in a rather brutal gang before, leaving after a few months, setting the base on fire before he runs away. He went on the move at age 15 for better places, and hasn’t stopped yet, though he had finally summoned his stand when he got caught in a rather unfortunate 5-on-one fight he definitely couldn’t win. Suddenly a ring appeared on his finger and a bead in his clenched fist. He had heard the word “Mio” used as an acronym for one million, being the cost for them to let him go. He used the ring, and withdrew that sweet sweet 1 million yen, before hightailing it out of there. He has just been doing research on the words “Mio” and “Mao” as well as money-making schemes to get by since. Along with that he, of course, took online language classes and expanded his vocabulary. He is fluent in Italian, Spanish, French, and Arabic. He’s haunted for sure, but you won’t see him not cracking a joke at every opportunity. He doesn’t really have a fighting style, as he would be improvising, but using the passerby or police through bribing or his heightened manipulation is what he relies on.
User Appearance: Johannes clocks out at the height of 5’4 with a pretty ok build, nothing special. He usually wears clothes that make it easier for him to hide in crowds, such as a blue shirt without printing and khakis in slums, but it can vary depending on where he currently is. What doesn’t change is that he wears three additional rings, one on the hand with The Treasury, and the other two on the other hand. His shoes also don’t change, wearing brown bowler shoes, with a small skull at the back of the heels.

2023.03.21 17:01 The_one_with_no_name Loose bridge pickup in two different guitars? (Blacktop Filter'Tron / FT-5E Filter'Tron)

Hi everyone. Two weeks ago, I bought the G5230t (the double platinum edition - stunning guitar) - first Gretsch I have ever held in my hands. Unfortunately, there were a few things wrong with the guitar, so I ended asking for an exchange. One of the things I thought were wrong was a bridge pickup (FT-5E, which - as far as I can tell - have the same construction as Blacktop Filter'Trons) that was more or less loose in the cavity. Basically, when the pickup was set to the correct height, the springs between the pickup ring and the pickup base plate were not engaged at all - there was no tension that would stabilize the pickup and the height adjustment screws in relation to the pickup ring - both the pickup and the screws were therefore free to move vertically 2 or 3 milimeters. The springs themselves were just just rattling in the cavity (and around the height adjustment screws) with any bigger movement of the guitar... Today, I got the replacement, and the bridge pickup is exactly the same as last time. Is this actually normal, or am I just extremely unlucky?

Chapter 14 - Time and Change Will Surely Show
Last Time: Laran and Aiden were joined by the dwarven Augur Leor and together they executed a plan to beat back the bandits who were trying to steal from her carriage. In an improvised attack that involved all three fighters, Aiden managed to break one of their attacker's ankles - Laran had held his feet in the earth, Leor had made him more unlucky, and Aiden had been the one to tackle him. With their only remaining attacker being the halfling who had been christened Shooty, they tried to formulate a strategy to get the cabby to safety and get out of the fight. Leor cleared things up quickly, however, when she shot a bolt of lightning at the halfling in the tree. With the fight over, the group returned to town and got the cabby some medical attention. Deciding that they could use a drink, Leor and Aiden made for the Speckled Goose. As they entered, however, Aiden was greeted with the last thing he expected - someone was singing a very, very familiar song.
“Dad?!?” I said with a mixture of shock and confusion. Standing on the stage was a dwarf. He was stocky, maybe around five feet tall, and had a large, red beard and a shaved head. However, despite these details, I could still recognize my dad’s voice and his face. As soon as I had called out, he had hit an abrupt and unintentional chord on his guitar and made a sound like he was trying to suck his tongue into his throat.
“Aiden!” I heard from off to my right. I looked, and there was my mother. Unlike Dad, she had stayed the same height. However, she was sporting a pair of cat ears and a tail that bristled up like a bottle brush as she saw me. I just stared at her and blinked a few times, dumbstruck. She vaulted a table with surprising athleticism and came charging towards me before wrapping me up in a fierce hug.
“Aiden! It’s you! And you look like you!” She held me back at arm’s length and planted a kiss on each of my cheeks. Her eyes were sparkling and it didn’t seem like she noticed anything else in the world. Meanwhile, Dad had ditched his guitar on the stage and had jumped off of the slight elevation with a solid thump. He began winding his way towards Mom and I, making apologies and excuses to every patron he passed.
I noticed that every single eye in the bar was on us, including Leor’s. She had both eyebrows raised and looked very, very confused. Many of the other patrons had a similar look on their face as the beastkin and dwarf loudly welcomed their son the human. Maybe they all thought I was adopted? I tried to ignore my self-consciousness and embraced my mother.
“Hi Mom, when did you get here?”
My emotions were so loud at that moment. I had come to this world alone, and I had made my peace with that to some degree. I had figured I should move on and try to understand what had happened to me with the hope that it would bring me peace. Somehow, seeing my parents brought the hurt I had experienced on the first day back as much as it cured it. As my arms wrapped around Mom, tears came to my eyes and I leaned against her shoulder. I felt tears drip off of her face as well, and she squeezed me particularly tight.
I was shocked to find that it hurt, and the discomfort snapped me out of my reverie. I gasped a little, more from surprise than pain, and Mom released me. “Dang Mom, when did you get that strong?” I said. She looked bashful, and it was my father who answered for her as he finally broke clear of the gawking crowd and joined us.
“About the same time she got the tail and ears! What do you think, Aiden? You may as well start calling me Gimli, and your mom is like one of those cat girls from the animes-”
“NO!” I said loudly, mortified. Yes Mom had ears and a tail, yes the tail flicked around as we hugged, yes her ears reacted with surprise when I shouted, but that didn’t mean…
Temporarily my mind was utterly consumed with the thought. Oh god, my mom was a catgirl. And Dad seemed to be into it.
No no no no no it’s fine catgirls are beastkin here and are just normal people it’s fine you’re the one being weird about this Aiden goddamn internet ruining an idea as innocent as catgirls.
My mental struggle must have shown on my face. Dad was laughing uproariously and Leor had joined him despite the fact she had no idea what was going on. Mom looked a little embarrassed and bashful. I felt bad then and worried I might have hurt her feelings.
“I mean, yeah it does seem like Mom is a cat beastkin ,” I leaned into the word hard, shooting a glance at Dad, “but I can guarantee you she’s nothing like an anime catgirl.”
Mom grinned, her moment of self-consciousness forgotten. Dad and Leor finally let their laughter subside, and the people at the bar stopped staring at us quite so hard. I could still hear a buzz of conversation - we hadn’t directly said we were from another world, but our conversation was definitely weird enough to get people thinking in that direction. Mom kissed me again and Dad also gave me a long hug. I assured them I was fine and doing well, and then I convinced everyone to go and find a table so we could keep talking.
We chose a table off to the side of the bar, hopefully big enough that the Aganas could join us when they arrived. Dad went to the stage and told everyone he was done for the night - his son, who he hadn’t seen in a while, had unexpectedly returned. Everyone seemed to take his words at face value and went back to eating their meals. Eloise was working so I flagged her down - I really hoped she had been able to catch a break between this morning and now, but had no idea how her schedule worked. She trotted over with a smile on her face.
“Welcome back Aiden! Tonight’s been an exciting night, hasn’t it? First I heard you fought some bandits, and now you’re reconnecting with some long lost family! Might I be so bold as to suggest this sort of occasion calls for some wine?”
My parents’ eyes bugged out a little with the part about me fighting bandits. Eloise must have her ear to the ground - maybe Laran stopped through the Speckled Goose on his way home to tell her something? I quickly reassured my parents that I’d explain the whole thing, then thanked Eloise and said that yes, wine sounded great. Nodding and grinning, she left the table to go fetch the bottle. I figured there was no reason to delay my explanation, so I just launched into it.
“So, first of all, let’s do introductions. Mom and Dad, this is Leor Whisper - we just met a few hours ago, and yes we did fight some bandits. She’s a M- an Augur. Leor, these are my parents Tom and Matilda. I can explain how that happened if you give me a little time.”
Leor and my parents exchanged greetings, but I could tell that they were just being polite and were mor interested in my explanation. I started from the beginning, of being in a strange room and building my current body. Apparently my parents had seen much the same, though in their case they had been together. I asked them if they knew what roles they had chosen, and their answer caught me completely off guard.
“Oh, the weird statue things? I mean, we’d spent so long building our bodies at that point that we just kind of picked one and went with it. I think one of the people on my statue was holding a book?” Dad looked to Mom, who simply shrugged. “Your mother touched the sword one, I’m pretty sure about that.”
I tried to hide my shock at the nonchalance of their decision and pressed on with my own story. I talked about how nice the Aganas were and mentioned that we were expecting them to come here shortly. Mom and Dad cut in and mentioned they had just been wandering until they found Eightside and basically lucked their way into endearing themselves to the owners of the Speckled Goose, so that’s where they had been staying. Similar to me, they had also awoken in strange clothes and with money in their pocket. Leor stayed quiet through the entire exchange, seemingly content to just soak up the weirdness. I was just getting to the part about Laran agreeing to teach me to use a spear after the bear attack when the doors opened and the Aganas walked in. I immediately waved them over.
Laran approached, though he looked confused. “Um, hello there. I was coming here to meet up with Aiden - I assume that he must have gotten bored and tried to strike up a conversation. My name’s Laran, and these are my parents Barts and Lorna. Pleasure to meet you.” He was polite in greeting my parents, which probably meant Dad liked him already.
Laran stuck out his hand with a smile on his face - he really did adapt to strange circumstances quite well. I was about to introduce my parents when my dad cut me off.
“What do you mean, do you not recognize us?”
The polite grin on Laran’s face instantly turned to panic, which was matched almost muscle-for-muscle in Barts’ expression as well. I put my head in my hands - Dad’s humor could occasionally get a bit away from him, and he often leapt before he so much as thought about what may be at the bottom. Mom covered for both of us though.
“Ignore my husband, he’s been a little too chipper after trading barbs with patrons at the bar. We’ve never met before, though it seems you’ve met our son Aiden. My name is Matilda Smith, and this is Thomas or Tom. It’s a pleasure to meet you, and I can’t thank you enough for looking after Aiden!”
For his part, Dad did look a little embarrassed and apologized. The Aganas assured him that no damage had been done nor insult taken and sat down at the table. Eloise hurried over with three bottles of wine - even though there were now seven of us at the table, three bottles still seemed like a little much. I wasn’t going to tell her to take one back though, and her good mood was apparent as she set down the bottles.
“Now just get comfortable and start talking, I’ll be back with cups before you know it!”
She scampered away as my parents, Laran’s parents, and Leor said their hellos. I could tell there was a little uncertainty about what to do from both sides - I don’t think anyone at the table had ever even vaguely thought about how to handle a social situation as weird as the one we found ourselves in. I felt bad that Leor had been left out of things so far, and prompted her with some questions. If other people weren't talking anyway, her story may make for more neutral ground to cover.
“So Leor, now that we’ve all introduced ourselves a time or two, I’m a little curious about you. In the woods earlier you told me you are an Augur like your mother - can you tell me what that’s like?”
I saw a flash of annoyance go through Leor’s face, though it was quickly replaced by a realization and a thankful nod. I figured that while her upbringing may not be her favorite topic - if her rant in the woods was anything to go by, it was likely a particular sore spot for her - it would give her a way to have the floor for a bit and not be drowned out by the other conversations that didn’t involve her.
“Hmm, well there’s not a whole lot to tell. I’m part of Clan Whisper - I assure you, the name makes us sound much cooler than we are - and our clan line is known for producing a great many Seers and Augurs of repute. In fact I was just on -” I saw her pause and seem to debate something internally before continuing speaking, “-my way back home after some training. I went and saw some clan members, and now that they’ve trained me, I’m expected to make something of myself in whatever way I see fit." Her words rang hollow to me, but I figured now was not the time to press them. I was already beginning to see the outline of Leor’s life - a controlling mother, familial expectations, and desires that didn’t fit into the mold of what she was supposed to do. I wondered if she would want to join my impromptu adventuring party - while there were definitely some rough edges to be sanded down between the two of us, our powers had complemented each other well when it came to breaking Stabby’s ankle, and Laran and I could really use someone with ranged offense. I didn’t have that same burning hope she stayed with me like I did for Laran, but the way we had run into her and immediately helped her out basically screamed “here’s your chance to recruit someone” to me. My thoughts suddenly reminded me I hadn’t checked a mirror since the bandit combat.
“Hey Lorna, do you have a makeup mirror or something?”
She nodded and rifled through her bag while Leor kept giving little details about her life. Lorna's bag was full of things she had brought, presumably in case she was needed for a medical emergency. Since we hadn’t heard from the healer, she stayed in the Speckled Goose with the rest of us - given how raptly she listened to everything, I was sure she preferred it that way. With a small, triumphant cry she brought out a little clam shell mirror whose exterior looked like it might have actually been made of a clam shell. Mom complimented it, which launched a polite digression in the conversation at the table,, while I looked at the reflective surface.
Encounter successful! Party Members: Aiden, Laran, and Leor Loot: None Progression: * Aiden has grown to Level Three * Laran has grown to Level Four * Aiden, Laran and Leor have gained one Talent Point
The writing was much the same as last time, though I was surprised I leveled up so quickly. Maybe it was simply because I was a lower level than everyone else in the fight? If I had gained Talent Points when I leveled up like I had last time, I would have a decent handful to spend now. Before I could get too sucked into musing about how to spend my points, I closed the mirror and returned it to Lorna. I answered the round of questions my parents and Leor asked about what I was doing, then segued from that into telling the rest of my story up until the present. I got very few interruptions, which was a blessing.
“That’s about it, at least so far. It seems like Mom and Dad got transported to Tal as well, and now we’ve met Leor too. All in all, it feels like it has been a busy few days.”
Everyone laughed and agreed with me. I had not been speaking the loudest, but it still entertained me to see someone seated at a table near us slowly have their vision glaze over as they tried to figure out what the heck was going on. With the story done, there was a moment of silence before anyone spoke up as everyone digested the strange circumstances they’d been presented with. We had gone through all three bottles of wine,, and signs of tiredness were starting to show on everyone's faces. It was Barts who broke the silence.
“Welp, can’t say I e’er heard such a tale afore, but the boy an’ yer stories match. Somehow it’s t’easiest way t’explain the whole thing save adoption, and Aiden’s still got a few oddities besides. I can’t help but think we ain’t gonna get much further this night, maybe we pick it up again on the ‘morrow?”
Everyone agreed to that. Leor had enough money to rent herself a room at the Speckled Goose for a while, so she decided to just stay there. Mom and Dad apparently had already booked a room for a decent bit as they tried to get their lives figured out. They invited me to stay with them that night and I accepted - if I was going to be leaving and adventuring here soon, it was the least I could do. The Aganas, of course, were going to go back to their own home. They invited us all over to their house for breakfast the next day so we could continue talking everything over.
As everyone said their goodbyes, I followed the Aganas out so I could talk to Laran. His parents gave us some space by walking further down the road before stopping to admire some glasswork or another that was hanging in a craftsmen’s shop window.
Laran and I looked at each other in the twilight. For a moment we didn’t say anything, and then suddenly we were both laughing. Laran started it, his lips cracking apart just the littlest bit to show his pointy teeth before I broke. Soon both of us were deeply belly laughing at the absurdity of the day. It took Laran several tries to speak as he kept taking breaks to laugh and wipe tears from his eyes. When he finally got it under control, he sounded very sincere.
“Well Aiden, thanks for one of the single most interesting and notable days of my life. I must say, I’ve never had a date turn into a rescue turn into a reunion before. You’re making life around here seem much more… exciting. Yeah, excitin’ is the word.” I grinned back at him, again surprised by the strength of the emotional reaction that roiled in my chest.
“Of course, just don’t expect anything quite so grand for the next date.”
He grinned back at me, and put a hand on my shoulder. The temptation to kiss him flared up again, predictably, but it still didn’t feel right so I didn’t. His next words caught me completely off guard.
“Yer planning to leave, aren’t you?”
I had no idea what to say. My answer must have been plain in my eyes, because he looked at them searchingly. I answered that yes, I was thinking of leaving to try and figure out what was going on with me. His smile was still present, but it was tempered now.
“I see. We’ve had some conversation and such that’s been close to the topic, I just wanted to hear it for certain."
I nodded, my throat suddenly dry. I tried to think of something to say but I couldn’t. Laran simply watched me, deep in thought. Some words came to me, so I said them even though I felt like they weren't what I really wanted to say.
"Um, do you have any other questions?"
Laran cooked his head to the side slightly and thought about it before shaking his head.
"None, that's all I wanted to know. Good night Aiden, and thanks for the day."
He reached down, took my hand, and squeezed it. I squeezed back and told him goodnight as well before he set off into the woods and I turned back to the tavern. He had only gotten a few steps away when he suddenly turned back.
"Oh! Aiden. Uhm, when I was talking with Mom and Dad while we were heading to Eightside, I kinda figured out something," his face was deeply flushed, the very picture of embarrassment. "Mom knew today was a date."
I was shocked - Lorna's interactions with me in the morning suddenly took on a new light. My own face heated up to cherry red and I replied by making a slightly strangled noise to convey my surprise. Neither of us knew what more to say about that knowledge, so Laran waved and I shrugged and he turned back to join his parents.
When I went inside the Speckled Goose, it had calmed down significantly. We had settled our bill when most of the patrons had left for the evening. Eloise was mopping an area near the stage - someone had tipped an entire tankard over - but she paused to wave at me as I went up to the room my parents had rented. I waved back and wished her a good night, which she returned.
When I entered the room, my parents were both waiting for me. I immediately got the same vaguely uncomfortable feeling I'd gotten when they'd sat me down to explain puberty - whatever they wanted to talk about, it was possibly going to be awkward and almost definitely going to involve some emotional vulnerability on my part. It was Dad who started. "Hey Bud, I know you told us what had happened down in the bar, but why don't you tell us how you've felt?"
It all came tumbling out of me then - how I'd freaked out at the beginning, how the world hadn't made sense when I realized it wasn't a dream. I had sat down next to Dad, who had draped an arm over me. Mom shifted so she could rub a spot on my back under my shoulder blade. As I spoke, the raw emotions came back to me and I was fighting through tears.
I even went so far as to talk about my feelings from that day. I talked about how confused I was about what to do with Laran, how afraid fighting actual people had made me feel, and in general all of the doubts that had been building in my mind that I had kept pushing aside. My parents mostly listened and only rarely offered advice, but that is what I needed then. I fell asleep sitting up between them, and woke up the next day tucked into bed.
Elsewhere: The orc was thin. He almost looked like a scarecrow with his tall, lanky frame. He sat in a stone room, not quite a jail cell but also a far cry from freedom. He was nursing a nasty cut under his left eye as he heard a knock on the door. He straightened up and walked stiffly to the entryway to his room - he had given a report, but sometimes Daisy liked to come around and personally ensure that he remembered who was calling the shots. As he opened the door, he saw his friend. Her skin was mottled between pale and blue in a shifting pattern and she looked very, very worried. Wordlessly, the orc returned back to his bunk and sat down. He let his head hang as she entered the room and gently stroked the hair out of his eyes. She gathered a washcloth and a pitcher and gently set to cleaning the cut. The orc didn't make a sound despite the fact that her minstrations stung.

“I mean, yeah it does seem like Mom is a cat beastkin,” I leaned into the word hard, shooting a glance at Dad, “but I can guarantee you she’s nothing like an anime catgirl.”
I went and saw some clan members, and now that they’ve trained me, I’m expected to make something of myself in whatever way I see fit.”
Her words rang hollow to me, but I figured now was not the time to press them.
Party Members: Aiden, Laran, and Leor
Loot: None
Progression:
Yeah, excitin’ is the word.”
I grinned back at him, again surprised by the strength of the emotional reaction that roiled in my chest.

2023.03.21 13:54 ItsMeImARedditUser [EVENT] A very model fortress

The city bustled outside the windows of the small workshop, a humble little carpenters' establishment in the outer reaches of Zurich, it reminded the Burgomeister of home, a place he had not been in years now. His reislaufer stood in the shade of the door, keeping the curious well at bay, Albrecht was examining some of the clock housings and smaller toys on the side and Bierhals was using some spare lumber as a barbell. The Carpenter, an old man by the name of Holzformer, was preparing the final touches of the Burgomeister’s commission. It was some weeks ago when he had contacted the Zunft zur Zimmerleuten for their recommendation of a craftsman and they all said, for detail work, none was better than Holzformer, the family had worked in the canton for centuries after, wood was basically in their blood.
“Herr Burgomeister, it is ready”
The old man’s voice was but a whisper. The Burgomeister turned and set his eyes upon the work, before him sat what would soon be the crown jewel of Zurich and the Confederacy. It was incredible, a perfect scale, turrets, curtain walls, fortified foundations, murder holes, machicolations; it had everything, even little wooden soldiers on its battlements. It was a castle, nay, a fortress and it would be the heart of the Confederacy, rooms to host all the representatives of the tagsatzung, reislaufer quarters, debate chambers and stores to withstand a siege of many years. By God it was going to be expensive.
“Herr Holzformer, you have created a work of art”
“Thank you my lord”
“Please, I am no lord, I am simply the Burgomeister”
The Carpenter gave a hollow but sincere laugh.
“Forgive me, it has been a long time since I have made something of this nature and never for a common man like me”
“It is quite alright master carpenter, this is far from a regular commission I am sure”
“Oh indeed, pray tell, sir, what is it for?”
“The confederacy, mein bruder, the confederacy”

2023.03.21 07:37 Jrubas The Wolf and the Warrior: Pt 2 (End)

Dusk fell over the wilderness with the slow, languid relish of a woman basking in her lover’s touch, and all of the men drifted once more toward the inn. By seven, the public room was crowded with gaiety and good cheer, and a roaring fire blazed in the heath. Farbin had ordered a nine’o’clock curfew in expectation of the wolf’s coming, and the men jostling for position at the counter seemed hell bent on getting in as much revelry before the appointed hour as possible. Griger picked at his meat and potatoes, his mind preoccupied, then pushed the plate away and rolled a cigarette. The pretty barmaid came over, took the plate with a quick smile that didn’t touch her eyes, and hurried away. Griger did not look after her, nor did he allow himself to think of her. He didn’t have the luxury tonight.
“I’ll take two men,” he said, “and we’ll watch the road. I want other men hiding nearby.”
Farbin nodded. His face was drawn and white. Mayhap he sensed something in the air, or maybe he had read the moon; either way, he knew as well as Griger that something was going to happen tonight.
Before leaving, Griger fetched his sword from his quarters. Standing in the middle of the room, firelight licking his face, he turned it over in his hand, hefting it and testing its weight.
When he returned to the public room, it was empty save for Farbin, several aids, and a dozen Guardsmen. The barkeep and the maiden were both gone, likely hold up in their quarters, and Griger could not resist a twinge of loss, no matter how much he may have wanted to. “I’m putting these men under your direct command,” Farbin said of the soldiers. The table before him was laid with maps, parchment, and a large wicker basket full of garlic, as per Griger’s request.
He plucked one of the cloves out, broke it open, and smeared it along the length of his blade. “All of you,” he said, “do like me.”
Without question, each of the men did likewise, applying garlic to their swords like baptimsal waters to a sinner seeking salvation. Next, Griger rubbed half a clove on his face, neck, and arms. The soldiers followed suit without having to be told to. “Aim for its heart or its eyes,” he said. “Those are its weakest points.”
Shoving the sword through his belt, he looked at Farbin. “We’ll be back before sunrise. Likely before midnight.”
Outside, thin clouds wrapped themselves around the moon like rotted burial shrouds and a cool breeze redolent of earth stirred in the desolate street. Guardsmen patrolled the avenues and alleyways with lanterns and the three town deputies manned the gate, opening it for Griger and his party and sparing them anxious, sidelong looks. Well, that’s them gone, those looks said.
Griger strung his forces out along the road, from the bottom of the hill to the river one mile hence. He took up position in a bush pressing against the side of the road, and two of the Guardsmen hunkered behind a wooden cart directly across from him. Griger knelt in the soft dirt, hunched over to fit in the hollow space within the brush, and held the sword crossways so that the blade didn’t stick out and give him away. Silence crashed down around him, broken only by the even push and pull of his own breathing, and shafts of moonlight cascaded through the interlaced branches overhead like celestial search beams. Every so often, a faint kiss of wind would find him and dry the sweat on his face, and once, after he had been coiled an hour, a tiny burrowing mammal brushed past him in the semi-darkness. He reacted on instinct, shooting his arm out and smashing it beneath his fist. A chipmunk stared up at him, a grimace on its face and its eyes wide and staring as if across the gulf betwixt life and death.
A muted sense of remorse twinged his chest, and he took a moment to dig a crude grave with his free hand, then swept the poor, broken creature in and covered it with dirt, which he then patted down.
For a long time, he stared out at the road, his fingers curling and uncurling around the hilt. His heart beat slow and regular, his breathing even. Minutes ticked by, then an hour. The moon sailed above the treeline in the south and cast its light fully upon the world, so bright that Griger could see every pebble in the road, every snarled blade of grass across the way. Nothing moved, no sound carried.
He was just beginning to think he would be there all night when a low, rasping rattle pricked his ears. His muscles went rigid and his grip tightened on the sword. He craned his neck to see toward the bridge, and when he spied the beast, his heart stopped dead. Seven feet, perhaps eight, it ambled up the middle of the road roughly 50 yards off, just far enough away that even with the light it was a hulking, amorphous mass without feature. Its long, crooked legs bent deeply at the knee, and its shoulders rose and fell with the thunderous rhythm of its breathing. As it drew closer, Griger could make out the details of its being. Matted gray fur, so sparse in places that it exposed pink, dimpled flesh, covered its powerful body, and its face protruded outwards in a snout crammed with glistening fangs. Its smell found Griger then, a rank, wild odor, and his nose crinkled. He looked across the way at the cart. One of the men knelt behind it, his wide, horrified eyes stuck to the coming monstrosity. Griger had to remind himself that these men had likely never seen a werewolf before, much less a changeling.
That meant he was largely on his own here.
Right.
When the beast was fifty feet from his position, Griger jumped out of the bush and stood in the path, his legs far apart. The wolf came to a halting stop, and its burning red eyes narrowed in an all too human expression of surprise. Its black lips peeled back from its teeth and its pointed ears laid flat against its skull. It leaned over, its eyes blinking as if to dispel the sight before it, and let out a low growl. Up close, the abomination was even more fearsome, its joints knotted, its fingers and toes terminating in wickedly sharp claws. Griger judged it to be about 350 pounds of sheer muscle mass, not exceptionally large in terms of frame but large enough that if he let it get the upper hand, he would be in trouble.
The wolf tensed and looked around. The Guardsmen, totalling six, surrounded him on all sides, their swords drawn. The wolf squared its shoulders and hooked its talons. Its eyes locked with Griger’s, and Griger was certain that in them was hatred - pure, unadulterated, human hatred.
Letting out a soul petrifying howl, it lunged at him. One of the Guardsmen got in its path, and it swiped his easily away with such force that the man’s head was knocked clean off his shoulders. It hit one of the others and he issued a womanish scream.
Griger met the running nightmare head-on, the sword jamming deep into its belly. He ducked, missing its batting claws by mere inches, and wrenched the sword to the side. Wailing, the wolf brought its hands down hard on Griger’s back; the air knocked from his lungs and he went down to one knee. Acting quick, his mind blank and his instincts in control, he smashed his shoulder into the wolf’s knee in an effort to upset his balance lest he gain the high ground. The wolf staggered back, then kicked him in the chest, its dagger-like claws tearing the front of Griger’s shirt and puncturing his skin. He fell back onto his butt and braced himself for a grounded battle, but the wolf turned its back to him and lashed out at a Guardsman, driving him back. The others formed a tight semi-circle around him. Griger couldn’t see them past the wolf’s broad back, but the ones on the side sprang forward as one, their swords up. The wolf threw out his arm and tore one of their faces off, then snatched another up and tossed him away. The first lay upon the ground, his blood soaking into the dirt.
Getting to his feet, Griger ran at the wolf and jumped onto its back. His training took over and he watched from the center of his own head - a mere passenger -as he hooked one arm around its throat and jammed his opposite thumb into its soft eye. Warm jelly suckled his finger and inhuman muscles rippled and spasmed beneath his grasp. The wolf whipped left and right, and Griger held on, his legs flailing and snapping like twin whips across a horse’s back. Two of the Guardsmen jabbed the wolf’s stomach with their blades, and the wolf hit one with an open hand, cracking his and his comrade’s heads together and decommissioning them both.
Bodies, some dead and others unconscious, littered the ground. The wolf tripped over one and started to fall, but caught itself. Griger took advantage of its momentary misstep and got his legs around its middle. The wolf spun and ried to buck him off, but Griger, teeth gritted, held on, his thumb still deep in the monster’s eye. It wailed in a mixture of agony and frustration, and then threw itself back, its full weight landing on Griger and pinning him to the dirt.
Finally letting go, Griger heaved the monster onto its stomach and scrambled onto it, his knees digging into its furry flanks. Sweat coursed down his face and the back of his neck, and his heart slammed a furious tempo into his aching ribs. It felt like one was cracked but he didn’t have time to care. He balled his fist and smashed it into the back of the wolf’s head thrice in rapid succession, then cried out when it threw him off. He jumped instantly up, fire wrapping itself around his torso like the coils of a big snake. The wolf staggered to its feet, its breathing heavy and body trembling from the damage it had taken. Griger looked around, spotted the sword lying in the dirt, blade slick with blood, and grabbed it.
In the split second it took him to retrieve his weapon, the wolf had loped fifty yards toward the bridge; Griger could just make it out far ahead, lumbering awkwardly on all fours. Someone called out from behind, but Griger ignored them and gave chase, the vise of pain tightening round his chest. He gritted his teeth and pushed through it, every step an agony.
He caught up the creature on the bridge. Its gait had slowed and its breathing deepened. Without missing a beat, Griger spun the sword and brought it down on the wolf’s back one-handed. It sank to its hands and knees and gasped for breath. Griger hit it again, the blade slashing across the side of its face. He raised the sword for a third blow, but so quick he almost missed it, the wolf was on him, its snarling maw inches from his face. It grabbed Griger’s hand and twisted; bones snapped with a wet sound and pain shot up Griger’s arm. The sword dropped to the planks, then went over the side and fell five feet to the babbling river. The creature threw its weight into him, and they hit the railing; it cracked as surely as Griger’s wrist and they plunged into the cold water below.
For a moment they were completely submerged in a confusion of limbs, suspended between the world above and the one below like two insects frozen in amber. The wolf’s claws raked frantically over Griger’s chest, and Griger pounded his fist against the side of its head, barely aware of the pain streaking into his shoulder. They thrashed and rolled, then the wolf shoved him away. Griger broke the surface and sucked a deep breath into his bursting lungs, then looked around. The wolf paddled to the shore and stopped to catch its breath on the muddy bank. Griger swam after, got to his feet, and waded the rest of the way. Instead of attacking, the wolf tried to crawl away. Griger picked his way to dry ground, the grass thick and high, and kicked the wolf in the side. It flopped face first in the mud, then rolled onto its back.
For the first time since the initial confrontation on the road, Griger got a look at the creature. A dozen stab wounds salted its chest, the flesh raised and swollen from the garlic, and its gaping right eye socket was empty, the ruined orb presumably having been washed away in the river. Its dog-like face was crisscrossed with gashes and wounds, and its good eye pooled with misery. The Guardsmen had put up a better fight than Griger realized. Had they been smart enough to duck a bit, they might have brought the wolf down on their own.
The wolf’s gaze met Griger’s, and it tried to stand. Griger pushed it back down with his foot.
Realizing it had been beaten, the wolf let out a canine whimper, and before Griger’s very eyes, began to change like a caterpillar molting into a butterfly. Its features rippled and rearranged, its muscles pulsed and strained, the hair coating its body shedded.
When the transformation was complete, Sel, naked and missing one eye, stared up at him, his scrawny torso cut to ribbons and his face covered in hives. Griger’s heart sank to his stomach and his breath locked in his chest. Sel darted his remaining eye away and looked up at the moon, his mistress. “You watched yourself,” he muttered.
Coldness spread through Griger’s soul and he knelt next to the old man, his face hardening. He barely knew Sel, had only two conversations with the man, but he couldn’t help the faint flutter of betrayal in the pit of his stomach.
And that made him mad.
“I told you,” he said icily, “I can handle a werewolf.”
He wrapped his hands around Sel’s neck and squeezed.
When the old man was dead, Griger got to his feet, grabbed a tuft of white hair, and dragged the corpse back into town.
In an hour, pardon in hand, he left the village of Koreth and never looked back.

2023.03.21 07:34 TheLimeyCanuck [HowTo] Install Windows Server 2022 on a Lenovo M720Q or M920Q Tiny PC

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M720Q/M920Q Tiny PC is a popular choice of homelabbers. For such a small package it's a very capable mini server with a reasonably light power requirements. While some of the other variants in the ThinkCentre Tiny line don't have a usable PCIe slot, the Q models just require a cheap riser adapter to extend the PCIe slot to the top of the case so a half height x8 card can be installed. The riser design actually allows x16 cards to fit, but they will only run at x8. I just installed Windows Server 2022 on a M720Q and ran into some snags along the way. It took quite a bit of Googling and experimentation to get it all working properly and I thought it might help others trying the same thing if I put all the info I tracked down from multiple sources into a single post. While this howto is specific to the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny PCs it might be useful to those installing Visual Studio 2022 on other homelab metal too. Note that this solution requires some GUI intervention so it probably only works on the Desktop Experience versions of Windows Server. I haven't tried it on a core-only installation.

Background

I recently upgraded from 300Mbps cable internet to 1.7Gbps fiber. For over five years I've been running pfSense in a level 2 VM (VMware Workstation) on an always-on desktop PC on my LAN. While this worked great at 300Mbps it proved inadequate for multi-gigabit speeds. With a direct connection to the Bell HomeHub 4000 gigabit ports it can only manage 4-500Mbps throughput, so it was time to move pfSense into something better.
After seriously looking at a bunch of fanless 2.5Gbps micro-appliance boxes I realized I could buy a used 1L format tiny PC and put an SFP+ PCIe NIC and two 10Gbps transceivers in it for less money and only a slight increase in power consumption. I'd also be able to run a level 1 hypervisor and move several servers from my LAN there too, allowing some of the always-on PCs to be switched off most of the time. In the end I got a good price on a used Lenovo M720Q which has an i5-8400T 1.7GHz CPU (with hardware AES), 8GB RAM, single gigabit Ethernet port, one USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, two USB 3.1 Gen 1, two USB 3.1 Gen 2, one HDMI, and one DisplayPort connection. It also has integrated PCIe WiFi (which I will probably remove), 250GB M.2 NVMe SSD, and the optional second DisplayPort output (which I will definitely remove). All in a case about the same size as the old cable modem from my old ISP. It's actually only about 2/3 the size of the HomeHub 4000 fiber modem I'm using now.
Now the platform is decided it's time to evaluate hypervisors while I wait for the Mellanox dual SFP+ PCIe card, PCIe riser adapter, and two 10GBASE-T transceivers to arrive from China. I plan to test ESXi and Proxmox later, but I currently have a virtualized Windows Server 2016 VM I fire up for the fax server function whenever my wife needs to fax from her desk in her financial services business, so it makes sense to consider using Hyper-V as the hypervisor and just enable the fax server role so it is always available without needing to start a VM for it.
I loaded a copy of Windows Server 2022 on the M720Q but quickly realized it wasn't going to be a turnkey installation.

The Problem

Even though it is recent, the Windows Server 2022 installer doesn't include chipset drivers for the M720Q. Most importantly there is no driver included for the Intel I219V LAN chip in the Lenovo so there is no way to go online to install the missing drivers from the web. This wouldn't normally be too much of a problem since you can usually collect the necessary drivers onto a USB stick beforehand and then install them manually after the OS. The challenge is that there are no Windows Server driver installers for this NIC and the Windows 10/11 ones won't install onto WS 2022. If you could get onto the internet Lenovo has an online driver scanner which could find the drivers you need and install them automatically, but you can't.
Also, although the WiFi card in the M720Q includes Bluetooth, Windows Server doesn't know how to install the driver for the BT Personal Area Network Service on that device and will show it as non-functional in Device Manager even after you have managed to install the BT driver. You will have to tell it what driver to install manually.

The NIC Driver Solution

The problem with the Windows 10/11 I219V drivers is that the INF file doesn't include the necessary entries for Windows Server to know how to install it. Luckily there is a way to edit it so WS accepts it, but this means you will need to temporarily disable driver signing and Secure Boot. Once the modified driver INF is installed you can re-enable everything again. I found how to do this here, but I will extract the relevant parts and detail the steps in this post.
First you need to download the Win10 NIC driver from here. The one you want is the Wired_driver_nn.n_x64.zip one. Extract Wired_driver_nn.n_x64.exe from the ZIP file and then use something like 7Zip to extract the contents of the EXE into its own subdirectory.
You'll need to figure out which INF file to edit, and for that you'll need the hardware ID of the Intel NIC. Find the broken NIC in Device Manager and get the vendor and device portion of the ID string. For instance if the hardware ID is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15BC&SUBSYS_85F01043 the part you want is VEN_8086&DEV_15BC. Now we can use PowerShell to search for that string in all the INF files in the driver pack.
Fire up Powershell and navigate to the directory you extracted the driver EXE to. This NIC is 1Gbps so we only have to search in the PRO1000\WinX64 subdirectory. For reasons I don't claim to understand, the driver in WS2022 won't install for us, so we will search for an INF to edit in the NDIS65 subdirectory instead. These Powershell commands will return the name of the INF file you will need to edit in the next step.
CD \PRO1000\WinX64\NDIS65 Get-ChildItem -recurse Select-String -pattern "VEN_8086&DEV_15BC" group path select name
...making sure to replace the vendor and device string with the one you got from the previous step. Now that you know what file to edit open it in your text editor of choice.
Within the INF file search for the section [ControlFlags] and delete everything within that section. Don't remove the [ControlFlags] section heading though.
Search for the section [Intel.NTamd64.10.0.1] and copy every line from that section. Next search for the section [Intel.NTamd64.10.0] and append all the lines you just copied from [Intel.NTamd64.10.0.1] to the lines already there. Do not delete the existing lines in [Intel.NTamd64.10.0] just add to them.
You are done modifying the driver INF. Save it and copy the entire extracted EXE folder to a USB stick for transfer to the M720Q/M920Q. If you haven't already installed Windows Server on your target machine, do it now.

Installing the Modified LAN Driver

When you modify a driver INF like we just did the vendor security signature in the file is no longer valid and Windows Server will not allow it to be installed unless we temporarily disable driver signing. There are two ways configure WS for this... the easier command line method which works on hardware with UEFI and the more complicated GUI method required if your device only has an old-fashioned BIOS. The article I linked to at the top explains both ways, but since both the M720Q and 920Q have UEFI I will only detail the CLI method here. If you have UEFI Safe Boot turned on one of the required PowerShell commands will fail so you need to turn it off before proceeding. Any changes we make here to get the modified driver installed with be reverted again before we are done. On the ThinkCentres you get into UEFI setup by pressing F12 during bootup and then selecting the last option presented. Once you have Safe Boot turned off restart the machine.
When Windows Server 2022 has completely booted open an elevated cmd window and execute these three commands...
bcdedit /set LOADOPTIONS DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit /set TESTSIGNING ON bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF
Restart the machine to apply the new settings. Now with driver signing turned off you can go into Device Manager and select Update Driver Software... for the LAN NIC. When asked choose Browse my computer for driver software and then on the next dialog enter the location of the PRO1000\WinX64\NDIS65 folder on your USB stick and click Next. You will get a warning that Windows can't verify the publisher of the driver, which is because we messed with it, but just click Install this driver software anyway. If all goes well the driver will install and you now have Ethernet functionality, ready for the next step.

Install the Chipset Drivers

Open this page in the Edge browser and click the Scan Now button in the Automatic Update box. For Lenovo to scan your machine's installed hardware it will ask you to install Lenovo Bridge software. It's required for this to work, so just say yes. After scanning it will also ask you to install a live installer utility, also required.
After scanning you should get a list of all the devices it found requiring drivers. On my particular M720Q it found 10 devices. You can select which ones you want to install before proceeding so if there is something there you have a reason not to want the suggested driver for, turn that one off. In my case it offered a UEFI update, which I accepted, but this is something you might want to delay updating till later. Once you have told it which drivers you want click the install button and let it do its thing. I found that while it scanned for installed hardware fairly quickly, if you let it install all the drivers it found it can take quite a long time. You might want to grab a coffee or a sandwich while it works, but be aware that it will likely ask you for permission to install an unsigned driver again part way through so don't stray too far.
Also note that if you accepted a UEFI update it may reboot your machine to flash the new image before it has finished installing everything else. If this happens (it did for me) then after the reboot you will have to go back to the Lenovo Automatic Update page and tell it to scan and install again to complete updating the remaining drivers.
Once all the drivers have been installed reboot your machine before checking in Device Manager since some of the drivers don't seem to complete installation until the next restart.

The Bluetooth Personal Area Network Service Driver

After the reboot Device Manager should show all device drivers installed and working... except one. For some reason Windows Server doesn't identify the correct driver for device ID BTH\MS_BTHPAN, even with the BT drivers installed, so you will still see one device left without a valid driver installed. Luckily the fix is easy. In Device Manager right-click on the broken device and select Update driver then Browse my computer for drivers. On the next dialog choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. From the list of device categories pick Bluetooth then select Microsoft -> Personal Area Network Service and install it. Once done you should see all drivers installed and working in Device Manager.

Cleaning Up

Now that all the devices in your ThinkCentre have working drivers it's time to re-enable driver signing to avoid malicious driver installation in the future. Open an elevated cmd window and enter these three commands in order...
bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON bcdedit /set TESTSIGNING OFF bcdedit /set LOADOPTIONS ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
Next restart your machine and enter the UEFI setup by pressing the F12 key during boot. Turn Safe Boot back on and then allow the ThinkCentre to continue booting. At this point you should have a fully functional M720Q/M920Q running Windows Server 2022.

Conclusion

The Lenovo M720Q and M920Q Tiny PCs are perfect for many homelabs, offering ample connectivity with credible performance in a very compact package. Even in the older M720Q the i5 processors support hardware AES, enabling virtualization of pfSense/OPNsense with minimal performance hit, and it can easily take dual/quad NIC cards up to 10Gbps. Although the newer M920Q is a bit pricier, the older M720Q is almost the same machine and can be had for under $200 used. The only problem is that the chipset in them is not one which the Windows Server installer has drivers for. I hope that my tutorial will help others get over the hurdles and add these little gems to your homelab.

2023.03.21 05:17 Heirof_Numenor Help with troubleshooting my load order

Hi guys, so after a couple weeks of getting a new modlist together, I was finally able to test it out to see how it was working. So far I came across several issues, and I'd like some help to see what mods may be causing them:
- After my character dies in game, XPMSE no longer loads in MCM, and after that, I can't enter other MCM menus. The same thing happens with Nether Follower Framework.
- iEquip, five minutes after starting my new save, stopped responding to my hotkeys. The UI doesn't show up either. I think it also started after my character died in game.
- I cannot harvest Nirnroot.
- Cannot buy horse, bribe guard to enter Riften, or a carriage ride.
- There are a few silent vanilla guard lines (aka comments about Stormcloak rebels are not voiced)
You can find my modlist below. Thanks in advance for your help.

2023.03.21 04:25 Available_Dream_8268 How do I get over transition defeatism?

"Every cute passing trans girl either started HRT way younger than me, had half a million dollars' worth of surgery, or was a super-late-bloomer femboy pre-transition who got away with starting HRT at 22 and looking like a cis e-girl"
How do I escape this mindset? Dysphoria keeps eating me alive. I don't know if I have a chance, I didn't get to start HRT at all until like 19 and testosterone clearly had quite the effect on my face (I almost have the brow line and nose of that chad face wojak when viewed from the side if I'm not wearing my glasses) and my forehead is very large and rectangular.
I don't want a "passing and attractiveness doesn't matter" lecture, I really want to be able to pass for safety reasons and I want to be cute because I want to be and getting to be pretty and passing would be amazing and I'd be really happy.
My features look soft some of the time and I do look kind of cute in the mirror, but I don't pass. I'm obviously clockable by my square jaw and hollow cheeks giving my face that rectangular look and my prominent brow ridge. I look like an androgynous boy at most and my height and shoulder width definitely don't help. Nobody would ever take me for a girl and if I presented as female I'd be the most obvious man in a dress ever.
I know HRT has done something in the 8 months I've been on it so I can't say it isn't working. It just isn't giving me the effects on my face I want.
This is my only chance to be pretty and my only chance to be able to be a girl. If a year on HRT doesn't make me pretty I don't know what I'm going to do.
I promised myself I'd stop the negative self-talk, and going on spaces that make me upset, but I'll see someone who transitioned at like 15-16 who looks super cute, or someone who started around my age but was some super androgynous late bloomer pre-HRT who might as well have started at 15 and I discourage myself, and I tell myself it isn't worth it and that I'll never pass and that I should give up trying to be pretty because I'll never look any better than I do now and my face will never be fixed and my body will never be right and I'll be ashamed of myself forever.

2023.03.21 02:54 FossilBoi Tribulations - Epilogue: Elpis

I was hesitating to write this, but I feel like enough time has passed for me to continue. It was a rough few weeks. More of my own self-hurt, inside and out. Scars line my soul, and I continued to view the world through a blurry and unfocused lens, in part because of my own tears. I've all but cut myself off from medication, cut contact with others, and wandered around like a vagrant. I've slept in alleyways, under cars, by dumpsters, under bridges, even in the woods at one point. Anywhere free of people. At this point I considered myself like a stereotypical black cat; cross my path and be cursed. I continued to wander, eventually coming upon the place I've secretly spent the past three days: Turtle Island State Wildlife Refuge. They had apparently brought Hahnunah's carcass up here in a funeral of sorts, a ceremony blessed by Iroquois tribesmen (but also in part because of a legal agreement between them, Monarch and New York State). In the time that followed, a landslide occurred after some rough rainy weather, causing all sorts of erosive assault on the ground, making it open up a vast deep space that filled with water. As this impromptu lake formed, some debris formed an island in the middle, a portion of which was apparently made of a dislodged piece of Hahnunah's shell that had somehow found its way up to the surface. Eventually things settled as the lake formed, then in the next few days, it was like a whole new world opened up. The island that had formed was soon populated by plant life, and many animals were seen later on, some native to the region and others migrating in. The place was beautiful, and it was like part of Hahnunah was still alive in making this place prosper. But as for myself, I watched these pleasant scenes with a hollow soul. I had stayed in the park for three days (sleeping in the woods, and at one point even accidentally putting the back of my head on a pile of deer droppings that I mistook for rocks, as if my luck couldn't get worse), and I watched as the flora and fauna returned. Deer were plentiful now, pollinating insects eagerly flew from flower to flower, birds sang from all over, fish swam in the water, worms dug in the soil, raccoons prowled the brush, coyotes scoured the woods, bears wandered, turtles and frogs clung along the water's edge. Anyone else would've found the views a welcome contrast from the hustle and bustle of city life, but to me, it was like looking in through a window into a world I didn't deserve to be in. I found myself on a bench overlooking the lake, sat there as the dark night sky and starlight faded as the sun rose. Sunrises were me and Hahnunah's thing, and it didn't feel right even being in the presence of one anymore. I looked out on the lake as the morning birds begun their chirps and songs. Eventually the dawn sunlight illuminated the sky completely, but the cheerful atmosphere did little to settle me. Old and new scars make my soul and body burn, and I cannot even think of me and Molloy's 'happy' memories together (or even any of my memories of Monarch) without crying, and even when I ran out of tears to cry I still sniffled quietly, probably indistinguishable from the rest of the environment, drowned out by the arguably more cheerful sounds of crickets and such. As I sat on the bench, clutching myself in the fetal position. I struggled to think of what to do next. What was there? The lake is right up there, maybe that? Or a 'happenstance' encounter with a bear or coyote? Or a 'happenstance' occurrence of poisonous berries? Regardless of what little alternatives I thought, nothing else seemed more tempting to either continue wallowing indefinitely or cut it, and everything else, short. I hate you, I hate myself, I told myself under my breath over and over, like a crazed mantra. Eventually I said it out loud to the point of my tears finally returning. At least when your tear ducts feel dry you feel something. As I wiped the last few away, I heard footsteps coming from my right. I didn't bother looking up. If some ranger was there to escort me out, then so be it. I had no reasons to fight anymore. But when a familiar set of voices greeted me, I had to look up. It was Bodero and Mary Ann, who smiled slightly as they noticed me make eye contact with them.
"Hey, Fossil. Long time, no see. You've been gone two months, you know," Bodero said as he and Mary Ann both prepared to hug me, but I silently told them to hold back, which they did. "I didn't want to be there anymore," I replied, though my weak voice volume forced me to repeat myself when they couldn't hear me. "Fossil, if you wanted to tell us how you felt, and sought safety and love in the comfort of your friends, its ok to do so," Mary Ann replied. I shook my head. "No, its not. Don't you see? I'm a pest; an obstacle; something that hurts more than helps. All I am is just a weight. Wouldn't the best boat travel well if it wasn't weighed down by anything if it can help it?" Mary Ann shook her head this time. "You're not dead weight. Never were. What on Earth could possibly make you think that?" I sighed. This was going to get intense, I can tell. "I... let this happen. He and I were friends. Then we broke up because of our disagreements turning sour. Then we reunited. Then he tried to kill me, and I learned he hated me since the day we split, and wanted to just backstab me one more time, and do so with the ripple effect going out to the entire world. He wanted suffering just to make me suffer, to show how wrong I was and how.... right he was. How worthless everything else seemed. How there was no alternative. Instead of being smart, I was naive. I let him in, close to me and us. And what happened? DEATH! DEATH AND DESTRUCTION! DEATH AND DESTRUCTION THAT COULD'VE BEEN PREVENTED HAD I JUST WISED UP AND IGNORED HIM!" I shouted, my voice getting hoarse quicker than I thought. Bodero shook his head too. "No one could've known, especially you. Your reaction made sense; you wanted to reform a friendship, to rebuild a bridge, and it backfired. That on its own is bad enough, but Fossil, and I know this won't fix anything right now, but, you cannot blame yourself for everything that happened. That's just not right." I turned to him now. "Then what is? I should know better, I should do better, I should know better, I SHOULD DO BETTER, I SHOULD KNOW BETTER, I SHOULD DO BETTER, I SHOULD KNOW BETTER, I SHOULD DO BETTER!" My voice crapped out once again as I fell back on the bench out of breath, and it was a minute or two before I continued. "I'm not a good person, guys. Would a good person have let all this happen? Would a responsible person have let all this happen? I... I.. don't even think of myself as the same me that joined Monarch all that time ago. That younger, curiouser, nicer, promising, hopeful me. What a disappointing follow-up to him I am. I don't even recognize myself in my reflection anymore, it's just a.. I'm just a.. failure. Unworthy. Terrible. Defective. An unworthy successor to the younger me of yesteryear. Instead of me in the mirror, it's some unrecognizable hollow-souled ghoul staring back at me." Then I looked back up to their faces, full of pity and sympathy. I didn't deserve that. I didn't deserve... help! Couldn't they see that? "I'm sorry, guys. I'm sorry for dragging you down with me. I'm sorry to unload all of my shit onto you. I'm sorry for wasting your time being a failure. I'm sorry for shouting out something that the world should never hear. I'm sorry," I began to blubber, but I felt each set of hands grab my shoulders to steady me. I tolerated that for a second before I silently gestured for them to relinquish. I was still not big on physical contact yet.
"Fossil, there is no need to apologize. You haven't done anything wrong, and even if you had, you haven't done anything unforgivable. People can change, and you have certainly done so. I know this stuff about Molloy and Fields and Hahnunah and all of that can wear you down. I can see it. But that's no reason to destroy yourself. Nothing is. You're more than you think you are," Mary Ann said, a smile forming on her face. "If I am, then why do you guys have to do this? Why do you guys even take a chance on me still? Can't you see I'm just a... a... horrible person?" Bodero shook his head again. "You're not. Never have been. Maybe not perfect, but who is? Besides, Fossil, you were there for us when we needed it. Every argument you settled, every conversation you've struck up, every joke you laughed at, every hug you've shared, every piece of advice you gave, all of that resonates with us, with how you treat other people. You did good things, you helped us in ways you probably never imagined. Like Mary Ann. After her father was killed by that bastard Molloy, she sought ways to redeem his legacy and honor him, and having Molloy killed and joining Monarch - in part thanks to you - helped her a great deal. With me, I joined just before the Godzilla and Kong stuff happened. I was the most antisocial guy around. I had trouble with myself too, and at worst I also hated myself with the bullshit I kept telling myself, kind of like you. That I was awful, good for nothing, all that. But putting myself out there and talking to you and others helped me get out of my shell. Sure, I'm not perfect, but helping you out with your then-fresh troubles with Molloy and all that shell shock helped us both. Helped strengthen our friendship. I got insight on how to help people and see their point of view, which is why I can kind of relate to you right now." Before I could say anything, Mary Ann spoke up. "Fossil, we miss you. Ever since we learned you quit and then practically disappeared off the face off the planet, we were devastated. We understood what you were going through, but we didn't think that would happen. We feared the worst, we sent out some missing persons stuff, we had the police check the waterways for.... you know. Then a few days ago when you were spotted on a trail cam out here, we rushed out here as fast as we could to find you. As much as you think otherwise, we care about you, because we love you. We're friends. No, wait. At this point, we're family. We're there for each other, to love each other and support each other in times of crisis. Monarch as a whole exists to protect both the modern world and the natural world, just as we protect ourselves and you both out in the field and here in the private theater of war that is your mind. I know that sounds cliched as hell, but its true: we're family, and we're there for each other. We came all this way to help you. I know you may feel guilty about not being receptive to our ideas of help or attempts to communicate with you, but know that every chance we gave was never the last. We were always going to try again. You'd help us if we were in that position. You know, I think I know what you're on about here: compassion and accountability." Bodero nodded. "I agree. It is obvious that you care a lot about others, Fossil. But in doing so, you've neglected yourself to the point of even viewing yourself as less than compared to everything else, including us. I'm not saying to love only yourself, heh, but know that even though you're doing well by helping out others and ensure they get accountability for their actions, good or bad, you should do that to yourself too. Don't hate yourself when you make a mistake, learn from it. Get up. Walk away. Learn. I'm not entirely a fan of the whole, 'everything happens for a reason' thing, but sometimes good things come out of bad things. Obviously that doesn't apply to all things, but with you, you're a changed person. You should look at yourself less like a flawed individual but instead like a more developed and more mature person. Embrace the victories, no matter how small. Remember what I said before? Change the things you can change, not what you want changed. Even if its as simple as a thought." They both gave me some space, and a minute or two passed as I processed everything. "Fossil, we want you back. We really do, but we'd both understand if you don't want to. Tell you what, me and Chris have our car up on that end of the trail. If and when you're ready, come and meet us at the trail head. We'll be waiting, remember that," Mary Ann said as she and Bodero left me to ruminate in my thoughts once more
This recent influx of information sunk in. They did have some valid points. I was really just making things worse for myself. But how could I stop a problem that I think I deserved in the first place? I sat there, staring out at the lake again, the birdsongs getting louder and more numerous. As much as my cold heart would deny it, I felt a little bit of warm and fuzziness inside from this. I hadn't felt something like this since my first visit with Hahnunah after all that Bigfoot stuff. Perhaps... I am wrong about me. Sure, I may be imperfect (we all are), but... am I... really.... hopeless? Or is that my own delusion? I suppose this could've been purposeful by Molloy, to break me down to nothing. To reduce me to ashes metaphorically. As I struggled to comprehend how life could be from here on out, I remembered something. Death and disaster are unfortunately a part of life, part of nature's grand design. Despite that, a Titan dying or even an entire species dying doesn't effect Earth in the long run. Life goes on. If anything, there could be good things coming out of that too. Even with an organism no longer filling the reliable role it used to, it leaves it for something else, it ensured it was still there. And from there, life could blossom further as this new organism helps take over and pick up where the previous left off. With the Titans and their life-giving effects, even when one dies, not only are their niches filled like any other organism after, but they help the environment around them. Similar to how a dead whale can nourish millions of sea creatures on the ocean bottom, a dead Titan can rejuvenate entire ecosystems. In the end, its all relative. Nothing is permanent, not a state of mind, not an animal, not a city, not anything. But in the end, life goes on, and if you're lucky enough to still be on the path of life, appreciate what you can do to make things better for yourself and others. Even if you're gone, others will have things to remember you by. Maybe its not always a lose-lose situation. Still though, things look pretty daunting. I sat there still, before I finally decided to get up and stretch a little. After all my legs were falling asleep. I ended up walking to the water's edge, and looked down onto the ripples of the surface. Then once again, I spied my reflection. The person I was looking at was definitely different, and not exactly the same me I was before. But Bodero had a point. That could just mean I changed in some ways; matured, and did my best to be better. It was like a new iteration. It was still a strange feeling of course, feeling... happiness.... and relief again. At the same time, Molloy's damning voice crept in; "Don't be fooled by them. You are, always have been, and always will be, nothing, no matter what you say to yourself." I see I still have that going for me. But did it have to? Did I really I have to let this bother me? Of course, regardless of what I thought, it would probably still happen anyway, the fact that I cut myself off from my medication probably didn't help. But, even though it would continue, I would not let it bother me anymore. Molloy is dead, Fields is dead. Those evil men will no longer hurt people, and Statera Custodes as far as I know is on its last legs. This chapter is finishing, and doubtless there is another on the way with its own share of challenges, along with the occasional residual one from now. But I don't have to be weak and take it all. I can power through. I can be better, even if I don't think so. We can all be better. We can all improve. No matter what, life goes on, and this life, the only one we've got, is far too short for us to suffer in needless vain. When done right, you can help people and ensure they're helped even after you're gone. We just gotta live with ourselves and with each other. Be there for ourselves and each other. Hold each other accountable. Make sure we know our struggles and how to deal with them. The sunrise was up completely now, and I couldn't help but smile as I looked onto it. I could tell Hahnunah was still there somewhere. He'll always be there, helping things along just by them being in his presence, like some of us can do for others. In the end, cooperation and compassion are some of the biggest cards humanity can play, and we should play them any chance we get. On that thought, I slowly but surely walked back up the trail. Though dirty, exhausted, world-weary, and eroded to oblivion, I was still here, through it all. I didn't go through it alone and certainly didn't stay alive alone; I have the best friends and family I can ever ask for, and I cannot thank them enough. I don't doubt that tomorrow might cause a resurgence of this bad stuff, or the day after, or any other time after that. But that's okay. I'll deal with it when it happens, and if its for the rest of my life then so be it, but I will not let it wear me down. I will get help when I need it, I will stand up for myself when I have to, I will do it right; for me and those I love. I finally made it to the trail head, and I saw them waiting for me. At first, I stood there a few feet away, before I practically lunged toward them in a hug. We three just stood there, embracing as the sun's light continued to bathe the landscape in its glory. Yesterday had left, today had come. and tomorrow waits. But today is what matters. I got back into the car with them as Bodero got on the phone with the higher-ups to confirm my return. Apparently my office and everything is still in good shape. As the car began to pull away, I looked back out one last time, at the wildlife refuge sign before us. But what was coming from the nearby water, and crawling slowly towards the sign, towards the illustration of Hahnunah carved on it? A turtle, with nothing else on its mind but to go about today's tasks. And that is what I will do. I smiled as we pulled away, and the sign gradually turned to nothing but another object in the vast distance behind us.

2023.03.21 02:25 Codeandcoffee [question] is this humbucker too loose?

Hey all, looking for some advise, I just had a new pair of pick up put in a Gibson 50s Les Paul. The bridge is fine but the neck pickup seems really loose. It moves side to side in the enclosure and up and down with little force/ the screws that adjust the height also seem to move back and forth.
I’m wondering if this is normal or if this is worth taking back to the shop to ask them to fix video of movement

2023.03.21 00:51 Moonlord_ Another HonsVR review

Just got my HonsVR lenses today…It took 9 days total to receive in Canada from the time I got my shipping/tracking email. Total cost was $71 Cdn and I didn’t get charged anything else for duty/customs. Packaging was nice…they come in a black box with lid, in a fabric covered clamshell case that sits in a foam cutout, along with a lense cloth, all of which are branded.
The prescription is accurate. I tested them vs my glasses and didn’t notice much if any difference.
The inserts just snugly slide over the stock lenses and are secure once in place without any slippage or movement. It can be a little finicky to line them up properly when sliding them on but not a big deal…you get the hang of it after a few tries. Removing them is as easy as it gets…just grab them by the edges and pull them straight up.
I have a pretty mild prescription (-0.5, -1.25) and was previously using the headset without glasses. I tested the inserts out for about a hour with synth riders, GT7, and Demeo. While it’s not a game changing difference for me with the inserts on it definitely is still a noticeable improvement….a little more than I expected actually. It nicely sharpened up the overall image a worthwhile amount while providing lense protection which is what I was after.
I didn’t notice any difference in eye tracking although I redid the calibration just in case.
The cutouts for the nose bridge work as intended. I have a 61 IPD and the lenses touch my nose a bit when in the proper position. There is no difference for better or worse with the inserts on so that’s a plus. In fact it’s probably slightly better since the headset has to sit slightly further away from your eyes with the inserts on which brings me to the negatives:
The inserts do add some height to the lenses which results in a slightly reduced field of view due to your eyes not being able to get quite as close. I’d say it adds maybe 5mm or so of height. If you were previously wearing glasses it’s probably no different or slightly better and obviously any insert is going to add some height so it’s inevitable but worth being aware of.
The lenses come with anti-scratch and anti-glare coating. I did not get the optional blue light filter. The clarity/optics of the lenses is very good but I do notice some reflections/glare occasionally with them on, despite the coatings. It’s not noticeable 99% of the time during gameplay but in certain scenes/lighting you can notice it…mainly darker scenes.
There is a slight gap between the insert bracket and the stock lense where the nose cutouts are. This hasn’t been a problem but I imagine with time some dust/sweat/fog may eventually make their way in between the lenses and require removing to clean out….probably not a big deal but just an observation.
Overall I’d say the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The extra clarity/protection is great and it’s a good value with its pricing compared to the alternatives.

2023.03.21 00:23 PrincessPandaReddit Sonic sheet music book series idea

(originally posted on the Sonic News Network Discussion Board; I worked hard writing and revising it; also, nice Riders banner, as it reminds me of my personal Riders skin I have on Wikipedia!)
If we have an official encyclopedia and cookbook, then why not an official sheet music book or two? I looked up and it turns out Mario and The Legend of Zelda have official sheet music books. Sonic has so much great music, and learning musicians could enjoy more with that music rather than boring exercises, classical music, and folk music, so it’s a given.
(I actually thought up an idea for a Sonic sheet music book in 5th grade music class after looking at a sheet music book we were given. I thought of creating it myself with sheet music I found online.
And next, we need a rhythm game…)

Sonic the Hedgehog: Sheet Music Collection

A book collecting sheet music of vocal/piano/guitar arrangements of many Sonic the Hedgehog songs spanning eras from the first game to Sonic Frontiers. Each song has a single piece of sheet music for vocals, piano, and guitar. Because the arrangements are meant to exactly replicate the original, they are intended for those who have practiced enough of a respective instrument.
The cover art could be original and of Sonic singing through a microphone, Shadow playing the piano, and Silver playing the guitar. There could be a subtitle stating "50 Songs from the Video Game Series".

Back cover could also simply list the songs and their sources.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Easy Piano Collection

A book collecting sheet music of piano arrangements of the songs collected in the previous entry but simplified for beginner piano players who have already mastered the basics. The sheet music also contains lyrics for those who want to sing along.
The cover art could be also original and of Sonic playing the piano. There could also be a subtitle stating "50 Songs from the Video Game Series".
Back cover could also simply list the songs and their sources.
(I may put probable blurbs for both of them, but I'm bad at writing at them.)

2023.03.20 23:06 lleu81 Do I really need a GPS or will Trucker Path do?

So I was looking at this GPS. I'm wondering if I really need one though or is a Trucker Path subscription just as good? Does a TP subscription let you specify heights and widths and warn you about low bridges? I don't see anything like that on the free version. Do you prefer to use Truck Path or a stand alone GPS?

2023.03.20 21:50 DeyCallMeJiggles New mechanic proposal

DISCLAIMER:I don't not understand the programming behind the mechanics the game currently has so im not sure this is possible anyways,so please bare with me here...
I've now decided to make this a seperate post from the highly unfavorable (and now deleted) sniper rifle change proposal post Colonials and Wardens i present to you...bullet penetration mechanics! crickets
So the idea behind this is to bring a bit more fun or appeal i suppose to the infantry aspect of the game, the basis of this would be the following
Soft surfaces such as tents, tarps, uhhh probably forgetting some objects found around the map... (again disclaimer i don't understand the basis of how things are treated, maybe a tent is treated as if it were solid rock when shot, idk im not a programmer and whatnot)
'Mild' surfaces such as wood on,sheds, barns, wooden barrels, crates,'toothpick trees', fences and the like
Hard surfaces such as (yes i know these aren't actually surfaces) logi trucks, halftracks,FMG shielding, halftrack gunner shield plating, cranes and possibly some other things
All of these would be subject to bullet penetration dependent upon caliber and i (literally upon making this post) have thought up a tier system
Tier 1: light ammunition, this one should be pretty obvious, handgun (not .44 however)SMG,shotgun ammunition gets little to no penetration only on 'soft surface' objects and does reduced damage (idk maybe 15-25% upon hitting a target on the other side of whatever it may be
Tier 2: 'regular' ammunition like 7.62 and 7.92 would be able to penetrate the 'mild' surfaces as listed above with reduced damage however with more than enough capability to penetrate soft surfaces, shooting through them, would deal closer to regular damage
Tier 3: large caliber munitions, the big ones...12.7 and 20mm (with possibly the exception of infantry weapons with high velocity barrels the KRR2,KRR3,Clancy-Cinder,Clancy-Raca,Hangman and Volta) these are capable of killing occupants in lightly armored vehicles and the 'hard' surfaces listed, this is quite beneficial as im sure we can all recall a partisan or enemy stealing a logistics truck, hop in a crane or whatever it may be (minus tanks) and they wreak havoc and you come to 1 of 2 outcomes... 1...you have to destroy the vehicle and then you have one less of whatever that was,and if on the front line you may not be able to get another anytime soon if at all 2...GAS them out nearly everyones familiar with this scenario, and often (though you could blame 'skill issue' lol) there is no gas to be found nearby, and depending on whether or not the undesired occupant has a gas mask with several filters, this could become a pain in the rear, and since this new update, you can't hop in a enemy occupied vehicle (or maybe its when they're the driver,i forget)
Also,in case of suicide truck/mammon truck rushes, maybe everyone isn't looking that way or is unaware of it,you could (granted you have the the right weapon) kill the driver and prevent them from even getting close with a couple well placed shots, which instead of disabled vehicle still rolling at you is stooped immediately (kinda bs ik,like how you hop out the drivers seat of something and it immediately stops moving, because logic)
Lets say you have an elevation advantage on everyone's favorite thing...a bridge battle push gun MG (assuming the push guns like a push 40mm,68mm and so on have much thicker shielding for the users) instead of having everyone grab a bunch of mammons, bomastones or whatever may be it and hopelessly getting mowed down with maybe 1 or 2 people getting a grenade off,in which the FMG just (IN MOST CASES,lol) pulls back before they explode anyways someone with a 12.7mm ammunition weapon or ATR hits the gun shield, shot goes through does partial damage to the occupant possibly bleeding status or just plain downs/kills them
With this in mind heavy ammunition would not inflict significant damage to its target like an ATR does upon a penetrating shot but does whatever is considered regular amounts of damage, like half tracks taking fire from flak/emplaced mgs,it doesn't get disabled or destroyed 50 hits from 12.7,it takes minor damage..
2nd DISCLAIMER: again i don't understand the actual functionality of things in the game,I'll reference a wood crate or barn wall for example im unsure if the models for them are (when being shot from the outside in) 'hollow' is meaning its outside wall, gap, inside wall or 'solid' meaning outside wall, material filling, inside wall,i also don't know if system/engine (i think its unreal but whatever) allows for parameters to be input for things such as a penetration scale and damage multiplier or whatever you want to call it
The downside, devs would essentially have to model hitboxes for lightly armor vehicle occupants, such as logi truck driver, the passengers, same with halftracks and maybe armored cars, there's likely plenty that could go wrong here like bugged or improper hit boxes another possible issue is a lot of things would need to be remodeled in order to be applicable for the new mechanic
Please,I'd appreciate it if this post remained civil and kind in the comments section,i do want to hear your thoughts on it,also sorry i know its a long ass post
